The Guardian's political editor Pippa Crerar, who led the way in the reporting of partygate, joins the IfG podcast team to weigh up Boris Johnson's Privileges Committee hearing. How did the former prime minister perform when quizzed about whether he deliberately misled the Commons? What might the committee decide to do next? And what was it like for Crerar to be the journalist at the centre of one of the biggest political stories of recent years?   And while Johnson fought for his political future, in another part of the Palace of Westminster Rishi Sunak was celebrating as MPs – Johnson and Liz Truss not included – backed his Stormont Brake. So is Brexit finally done? Will power-sharing return in Northern Ireland? And what does the vote mean for Sunak's standing?   Presented by Catherine Haddon. Apart from perhaps Sue Gray, I can't think of a woman more guaranteed to send chills through the corridors of power than Pippa Crerar. The incoming new political editor of the Guardian, Crerar was born in Edinburgh in the long hot summer of 76 and attended Glasgow Academy. Her career as a political journalist is garlanded with too many prizes and awards to mention here - she picked up a handful for breaking the story of Dominic Cummings day trip to Barnard Castle during lockdown and she has been like a dog with a bone when it comes to Partygate in all its various forms.

For part 3 of the Early Years, we resume the narrative in early 2012.  Pat Bailey had left Night Demon to return to school. At that time, Night Demon welcomed drummer John Crerar from The Fucking Wrath into the fold. Crerar brought extreme enthusiasm and energy to the band, despite being from a punk background more than a metal background. Meanwhile in 2012, Night Demon was very much a side project as the members focused on their main bands.  Jarvis was busy with Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats, while Dusty and Armand were firing on all cylinders with New Liberty.  The concept of a VenAustin tour was launched, with four bands - including Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats, New Liberty, Aaron Orbit, and 8Stops7 - playing shows on the way to and from South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.  You will hear tour stories and anecdotes from the tour and associated fundraisers.  By the end of the VenAustin tour, Jarvis returned to Ventura ready to resume Night Demon activities once again. Become a subscriber today at nighdemon.net/subscriber. Hello everyone,This week I bring you Simon Crerar, the founding editor of Buzzfeed Australia and now the co-founder of a local news startup called PS Media. To date Crerar and crew haven't publicly disclosed details of how PS Media is going to work, so I relished the opportunity to get him talking.I'll leave you to listen to the podcast to find out more. My advice is to stick with it as the picture of this new concept in news publishing takes shape during the conversation. What I will tell you here is that PS Media involves co-ownership by the community, is based on Local Government Areas (LGAs), and wants to be very different from traditional models where reporters and editors dictate the news agenda. This startup is taking shape at a critical time for local media, with lockdowns hitting advertising revenues even harder than last year in many areas. For the record, the PS Media co-founders mentioned in the podcast are: Karen Mahlab, Rob Wise and Margaret Simons. For those into news mediaPS Media and The Walkley Foundation are running a virtual event, “Why philanthropy is backing local journalism” on September 15. This is a special episode of our podcast. We are deeply grieved by the discovery of the mass grave of 215 children who died while under the care of the residential school in Kamloops, BC. This is a sobering time of reflection and mourning. We will not hide from the shameful history of these events or ignore the sins of our forefathers and how our Heavenly Father and His Kingdom has been misrepresented. We stand with and mourn with the Indigenous community as the eyes of our nation continue to be opened. We pray for truth to continue to come to light. We pray for justice, and for God to show the way to restitution. We pray for God's deep comfort and strength to those that grieve and to those that seek healing. We pray that God would restore the hearts and souls of the broken as only HE can. We pray for soft and open hearts within the church. May we listen and truly hear the words of the survivors.Throughout the "Calls to Action" from the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission there was a repeated call for more, continued and better education across the board. As part of our response to this, CFA was honored to have Duff Crerar come and share in June of 2019 during National Indigenous History Month. Lord, may our earthly knowledge be joined with spiritual wisdom and compassion as YOUR Spirit guides our physical outpouring of love and support for YOUR children in the Indigenous community.

M., Patani, R. Abstract: Intron retention is known to regulate gene expression. We recently described intron retention as the predominant splicing programme characterizing early stages of motor neurogenesis from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and it's perturbation in familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Here, we sought to gain more insight into the nucleocytoplasmic distribution of aberrant intron-retaining transcripts (IRTs) and to identify their discriminating molecular features. We combined cellular fractionation with hiPSCs undergoing motor neurogenesis and deep-sequenced 95 samples: ALS vs control hiPSCs and nuclear vs cytoplasmic compartments across six timepoints, which represents a rich transcriptomic resource for basic and applied neuroscientists. Using this resource, we identified >100 aberrant cytoplasmic IRTs in cultures carrying ALS-causing VCP gene mutations. We taxonomized aberrant IRTs by their nucleocytoplasmic distribution and demonstrate that these classes exhibit sequence-specific attributes and differential predicted binding affinity to ALS-related RNA binding proteins. In summary we uncover a distinct class of cytoplasmic IRTs that serve as blueprints for established molecular hallmarks of ALS (nuclear-to-cytoplasmic mislocalisation of TDP-43, SFPQ and FUS) and therefore may also represent therapeutic targets. Hello podpals and welcome back to Best Girl Grip; the mini lockdown edition. It’s been a crazy and stressful and unprecedented time, I feel like all adjectives have been exhausted and at that the same time like the language doesn’t exist to fully articulate what this is and what it feels like. I’m also really aware of pandemic saturation, it definitely feels like we’re past the point of no return when in comes to the overwhelming amount of content that is available for us to consume, with this supposed surplus of time and I’m really conscious of adding even more noise to that. However, I have decided to put out a mini quarantine edition. Firstly for selfish purposes because the interviews have always been about connecting with women in this industry and just enjoying the simple art of conversation with them, and I’m particularly craving that at the moment. And secondly, my friend was right, this is a great time to talk to women from all over the UK that being London-based, I might not usually have the chance to. And finally, if this edition can offer people in the film industry a sense of affinity or kinship, or just the sense no-one is working to their full capacity, everyone is juggling, maybe struggling or re-evaluating, then to me it’s totally worthwhile adding just a little bit to the noise. I’m really happy to say I’ve got my first duo on the podcast in the form of Rosie Crerar and Ciara Barry who formed their production company barry crerar in 2016 and are based in Glasgow in Scotland. They’re a relatively young company but already they have a number of exciting titles on their slate, and rather excitingly they’re releasing a film they co-produced called Run next week, which is directed by Scott Graham, a filmmaker I really adore and who you’ll hear me enthuse about during the interview. His previous two features Shell and Iona, the latter featuring Ruth Negga are really intense and poignant set in remote landscapes, which I highly recommend you check out. It was wonderful to talk to Rosie and Ciara about their ambitions for the company and their desire to tell contemporary and cutting edge stories that originate from Scotland, but have universal appeal. As well as the advantages of working together, how they came to set up the company and how they balance responsibilities. We do touch up on lockdown and how that’s changed their day-to-day and whether they’ve learnt anything from the experience. Not that that’s a requisite, surviving it is enough. Run is a gutsy and gripping drama about thwarted dreams, masculinity and small-town living, and it will be available to download from Monday 25th May from all the usual platforms.  This is episode 51 of Best Girl Grip.

Military families are essential to the care of veterans in both the past and present. Yet current veteran policies and programs do not fully provide the necessary services military families require for the process of healing and recovery. For the final episode of our four-part series on the past and present experiences of veterans in Canada, two scholars, a veteran and a caregiver continue their discussion of the effects of military service on veterans’ families. Drawing comparisons between veteran and family experiences during the First World War and the present, the guests discuss current research and the challenges mental trauma places on the family dynamic. These challenges include recognizing the sacrifices of military spouses and the risk of intergenerational trauma being passed down to veterans’ children. The discussion reveals how the fears of veterans and their families have been shaped by changes in government responsibilities to the veteran community over the past century and how this history continues to inform current veteran policy and program reform. This episode in funded by the Department of National Defence. It is hosted by Dr. Geoffrey Hayes of the University of Waterloo. Panelists are Dr. Jessica Meyer, Dr. Deborah Norris, Jody Mitic and Kim Davis. Dr. Geoffrey Hayes is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Waterloo and a faculty associate of the LCMSDS. His research focuses on Canadian military history. He is the author of Crerar’s Lieutenants: Inventing the Canadian Junior Army Officer, 1939-45, published with UBC Press in 2017, as well as the co-editor of Vimy Ridge: A Canadian Reassessment (2007) and Canada and the Second World War: Essays in Honour of Terry Copp (2012).

Many have fallen down the rabbit hole of over-researching. Telling the entire story is tempting, but it is an unattainable standard. Reconstructing the past out a series of texts simply cannot measure up to the multifaceted and dynamic realities of an all-encompassing history. And so it is imperative that historians abandon this idealized goal––if not for the sake of time, at least then for one’s sanity. Dr. Geoff Hayes, an associate professor of history at the University of Waterloo, visited us this month to talk about his new book Crerar’s Lieutenants. But before we discussed its content, Geoff talked about the challenges of the project, from the initial search to the eventual discovery of a satisfactory framework, and the necessity of imposing self-limitations on one’s historical research. Crerar’s Lieutenants unfolded over a period of many years, during which several drafts of the eventual manuscript were written. And with each revision, a new story was told. It wasn’t until he began to explore the Junior Army Officer through the lens of gender and masculinity though that Geoff finally found a framework that he felt was appropriate. It was an arduous journey to the final manuscript, but a fruitful one that led him to discover the military’s ideal Junior Army Officer, and how the real-life officers negotiated these ideals while fighting on the battlefields of the Second World War.
