Welcome to Season 2 of Live! at Hive. I'm thrilled to be back and kick off the show, having on as my special guest, my good friend, celebrity chef, entrepreneur and host of the cooking show 'New Soul Kitchen', Jernard Wells. After a long break, mostly due to COVID-19, I decided to have my friend Jernard as my first guest because he was the last person and colleague I worked with in person before Corona shut us all down. We tell you all about our latest collaboration. It's Hispanic Heritage Month, so I celebrate by opening with a poem by the famous Cuban poet, José Martí. In this episode's signature Soapboxing segment, Jernard and I go into the politics of food culture, food ways in America. Specifically, is food appropriation a real thing? Can a Japanese person open and run a Cuban restaurant and vice versa, or is that culture vulturism? Jernard dishes his very generous thoughts while I counter with an alternative. We also explore how entrepreneurs in the culinary industries can look at building wealth and not just stand behind the stove. Also, we celebrate Jernard, whose cookings show 'New Soul Kitchen,' on CLEO TV networks, comes back strong with Season 2 premiering this Saturday, Oct. 3, 9pm EST. And, to boot, I'm co-hosting 4 episodes and kick-off the season with him! Listen, enjoy, share, and subscribe to Live! at the Hive. Subscribe to the show and don't miss all that's coming in Season 2!

In this episode, we will be talking about Natural Hair Styles Vs. Culture Appropriation Hair Styles and how this distinct representation of the African heritage is being used as an accessory to fulfill personal aspirations or another fashion trend. As an Afro-Caribbean girl who currently has natural dreadlocks, I have seen how authentic African styles such as braids, cornrows, and even dreadlocks are being culturally exploited. Different media outlets have referenced cornrows as a new trend, but black women and men have been rocking these styles for decades. Wearing braids have always been an African tradition of representing the identity of tribes and a way to show appreciation for the influence of our ancient ancestors, but somehow along the way, we have forgotten the true meaning of authentic living. This is the real purpose for me doing this podcast episode, to address not only the cultural appropriation of African heritage but also the lack of understanding for those of truly abide within the traditions of Kings and Queens.
