In this in-depth conversation with longtime friend Greg Nardi, we discuss the ability yoga has to facilitate healing at every level. Greg walks us through the ways yoga enhances healthy embodiment and personal power. He then connects how restoring these aspects of self leads to a more just world. Greg details what one can expect from a yoga therapist and from a trauma-informed yoga teacher and where those modalities overlap. He shares recommendations for yoga teachers, practitioners, and trauma survivors who may have an interest in the ancient practice of yoga and yoga philosophy. Greg Nardi, C-IAYT, E-RYT 500 began his yoga journey in 1996 when a good friend asked him to “try” yoga. From that first class he knew that this was something he was meant to do. Yoga helped him feel healthy after years of childhood illness, anxiety and depression and most importantly yoga gave him a sense of meaning and purpose. He dedicated himself to a yogic lifestyle as part of his healing journey. Greg took four separate teacher trainings in the United States and Europe between 1997 and 2003. He took a dozen extended trips to Mysore, India between 1999-2016 to learn yoga with a focus in asana, yoga history and philosophy, pranayama, meditation, and chanting. Greg is a graduate of the Kripalu School of Integrative Yoga Therapy and was formerly authorized level 2 with the KPJAYI in Mysore, India. Since resigning his authorization in 2018 Greg has dedicated himself to educating yoga practitioners about power dynamics and consent-driven, person-centered, and trauma-informed approaches to the teaching and practice of Yoga. Greg has always considered yoga to be both a form of individual healing and social healing justice. He is the South Florida Program Director for Yoga 4 Change, a trauma-informed yoga services non-profit organization, and sits on the Board of Directors for Chainless Change, a community of recovery offering second chances to those negatively impacted by the criminal legal system. Wellness as we know it gained notoriety in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The writings and leadership of an informal network of US physicians and scholars were pivotal in shaping how we began exploring “holistic” ways of addressing health. The wellness field is built on the foundations of multiple medical, intellectual, and spiritual movements throughout history. Aspects of the field can be traced to ancient civilizations in Rome, Asia, and Greece. Ayurveda, a naturally holistic and preventative medicine system, originated in India over 3,000 years ago. The word Ayurveda translates to “Knowledge of Life” and encourages specific lifestyle interventions and natural therapies to regain a balance between the body, mind, spirit, and the environment. One could easily consider Ayurveda “The World's First Wellness Model.”Welcome to Episode Thirty-two of The Nature of Wellness Podcast. On this episode, we sat down with Ayurvedic Practitioner, End-of-Life Doula, and Yoga Instructor Larissa Hall Carlson. Named one of the “100 Trailblazers in Yoga and Ayurveda” by Spirituality & Health Magazine, Larissa leads transformative, empowering, and inspiring workshops, retreats, and trainings worldwide. Larissa is co-director of multiple Yoga Journal online courses and formerly served in various positions within the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, including Education Manager for the Institute for Extraordinary Living and Dean of the Kripalu School of Ayurveda.Join us as we talk to Larissa about her incredible personal health journey, how nature serves as a source of personal and professional motivation, how taking risks can yield highly positive results, and how a random VHS tape changed the trajectory of her life. Larissa discusses the powerful foundations of Ayurvedic practice, how simple lifestyle changes can lead to significant health results, how to “live and eat with the seasons,” and how practices like yoga and mindfulness can enhance optimal performance. This incredible conversation left us feeling “whole.” Please subscribe, rate, and leave a review anywhere you listen to this podcast. It truly helps us extend the reach of these powerful messages. What we talked aboutSarah's transition from a career in engineering to becoming a yoga instructor was influenced by her move to the Middle East and Singapore, and her encounter with Harriet Russell, a yoga teacher from the Kripalu School of Yoga. Sarah's approach to yoga is deeply rooted in science, energy, and the intricate dance between the physical and metaphysical aspects of our being.Fertility yoga, as Sarah explains, is not just a physical practice but a holistic approach that encompasses the movement of energy, diaphragmatic breathing, and the balance of yin and yang. She underscores the importance of adapting yoga practices to the individual's menstrual cycle and Ayurvedic imbalances, offering a tailored experience that addresses specific needs and challenges.Sarah's insights into the Chinese and Indian healing modalities, and her expertise in qigong, illuminate the pathways to harmonising the body's energy. She emphasises the role of the vagus nerve and the parasympathetic nervous system in fostering a state of rest and restoration, crucial for optimal reproductive health.Sarah's insights remind us of the profound connections between our physical, mental, and spiritual selves, offering pathways to enhanced health, wellbeing, and fertility. In a world often dominated by external noise, Sarah's wisdom invites us to turn inward, to listen to our intuition, and to embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing that is as profound as it is transformative. To find Sarah go to: www.sarahmanningyoga.comTo find Maria go to: www.fitnessfertility.comThis has been a Worth A Listen ProductionDISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Nick grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan, where he is currently raising two young children of his own. He started practicing yoga in 2000 as an antidote to the head-centrism of college. He found it to be a beautiful combination of spiritual practice and exercise, a way to contemplate cosmic ideas as they manifest in the particular pleasures and pains of human life. When not teaching, running his studio Grateful Yoga, or parenting, Nick likes to contemplate the fruitful intersections of yoga, Buddhism and science. He explores these ideas weekly in his newsletter Within Us and Without Us on Substack. His weekly classes aspire to this integration, mixing science and yoga philosophy with inquiry-oriented yoga practices. Nick has extensive experience working with beginners, men, couples, emerging adults, traumatic brain injury, the chronically stressed, and those seeking to make yoga and meditation part of their daily routine. He is a certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT) through the International Association of Yoga Therapy. View his full resume here. In spring 2022, Nick trained at the Kripalu School of Outdoor Leadership and now leads weekly outdoor experiences of communion with the lakeside lands around Evanston. Nick has a degree in Computer Science from Brown University, where he also studied the theory and practice of Buddhist meditation. Other influences include the Chinese arts of tai chi and qigong, running, the somatics of Lisa Clark and Bonnie Bainbridge-Cohen, improvisational theater, West African dance, artmaking, communing with nature, and cooking. Reverence for Impulse is an unscripted, unplanned and (hopefully) unedited podcast with me, Weena Pauly-Tarr. Together with my guests, we're asking what is alive in this moment? We start each episode with a few minutes of meeting each other head-to-toe, through the language of our bodies, before we press record and bring it to a conversation. We start where we are. This is not a hard hitting agenda or getting to the bottom of things, it's about being in the bottoms of things. Finding each other in the not-knowing. I'm here for the spaciousness, the awkwardness, the silliness, the silence — From the dark insides of our bodies to the brightness of our minds, I'm excited to welcome people who's impulses I'd like to get to know. www.weenapauly.com
It can be easy to think of practices like rewilding and mindfulness as being habits of only extra-zen, nature-based people. But if you're someone who likes to go outside or is building an outdoor habit, they are probably already a part of what you're doing, at least a little. So how can you do it more? And if you don't think you've added them, how can you make them happen while balancing a modern life? In this episode Micah Mortali, rewilding expert and dean of the Kripalu School of Mindful Outdoor Leadership, shares his insights and tips of rewilding, mindfulness and even meditation. Author of the book “Rewilding, Meditations, Practices, and Skills for Awakening in Nature,” Micah's extra-practical tips make a rewilding habit accessible for any outdoor-lover. Some people dread winter with its cold weather, long dark nights, and the downcast mood these elements often induce. But my guest would say it's possible to befriend winter, and truly enjoy the rhythms and opportunities that are unique to this season.Micah Mortali is the founder of the Kripalu School of Mindful Outdoor Leadership and an instructor and retreat leader who uses the teaching of ancestral skills to help people develop greater mindfulness and connection with nature. Today on the show, Micah explains why we should consider winter "the night of the year" and how befriending the season involves aligning yourself with its call toward rest and reflection. We first discuss exploring the outdoor world during winter and how learning survival skills like shelter building and animal tracking can help you spend more time in nature, restore your sense of well-being, and simply feel more alive. In the second half of our conversation, we talk about how to improve your interior life during winter, both in the literal sense of making your house more cozy and in the metaphorical sense of turning inward. Micah explains why you should spend one night a week pretending you live off the grid, embrace the power of firelight, and may want to wait until March to make your New Year's resolutions. We end our conversation with why you might want to read The Road this winter.Resources Related to the EpisodeMicah's previous appearance on the AoM podcast: Episode #739: Rewild Your LifeRewilding: Meditations, Practices, and Skills for Awakening in Nature by Micah MortaliAoM Podcast #157: Primitive Pursuits & Winter SurvivalAoM Article: How to Make Pine Needle TeaAoM Article: How to Track Animals — A Primer on Identifying FootprintsTracking and the Art of Seeing by Paul RezendesTom Brown's Science and Art of Tracking by Tom Brown Jr.AoM Podcast #566: How to Have a Hyggely Christmas and a More Memorable New YearAoM Article: 8 Things That Can Help You Get More Hygge This Winter"The Forgotten Medieval Habit of 'Two Sleeps'""Can't Get to Sleep? Today we are speaking with Yoga, Sex + Death Creator + Facilitator, Founder of Samarasa Center, Susan Marrufo. Susan left the United States and a job in advertising in 2008 to travel internationally and experience life beyond the confines of her cultural conditioning. She received her first 500-hr yoga certification in Thailand in 2009, where she began her studies of the classical yogic scriptures and delved deeply into esoteric tantric philosophy. After years of teaching month-long tantric based courses on the banks of the Ganges in India and the Pacific coastal towns of Mexico, Susan returned to the US to begin a residential internship with the Kripalu School of Yoga. She taught in and project managed several Kripalu yoga teacher trainings as well as received her 2nd 500-hr teacher training certification from the Kripalu School of Yoga in 2013. She has since split her time between India, Thailand and the US, facilitating group courses in the inquiry of yoga, meditation, intimacy and shadow work before moving to Los Angeles in 2016 to open Samarasa Center - an online and in-person community of dedicated seekers. In this episode we discuss: 1) Susan's journey of overcoming trauma, learning to feel and not numb and a healing journey that has taken her all over the globe as well as building her own Yoga, Sex and Death certification program. 2) Trauma – how we think of trauma as an event when actually it is a response in our nervous system to the event. When this happens our body differentiates pieces of the trauma and leaves these in our past and in our subconscious mind. Healing requires supporting our subconscious mind and healing all the pieces of our past stories. Micah Mortali and I discuss how nature immersion, rewilding, survival, ancestral skills can support our circadian rhythms, and proper release of melatonin, regulate our nervous systems and ease the impacts of trauma. We talk about the impact of technology on our psychies and that of our children, especially teens, the minimum unnegotiable outdoor time a human needs each week (so start tracking) and I share my personal experiences learning from Micah and how they helped me through some tough dysregulated times. Micah's life's work is about helping modern humans reconnect with their deeper, truer selves through mindfulness, rewilding, and immersion in the natural world. Micah is a lifelong student of the world's great spiritual traditions whose undergraduate work was in comparative world religions. In his 20's, he was a wilderness counselor and outdoor educator with young adults, guiding back country expeditions on both land and water. For the past 17 years, Micah has been leading retreats, trainings, and programs at Kripalu. Micah was the Director of the Kripalu Schools for 7 years, and it was during this period that he was inspired to create the groundbreaking Kripalu School of Mindful Outdoor Leadership and write the book Rewilding: Meditations, Practices and Skills for Awakening in Nature published by Sounds True. Mich is a lifelong archer and in 2022 launched Mindful Archery at Kripalu and began work on his next book which will focus on archery as a spiritual practice. Micah holds a master's degree in Health Arts and Sciences from Goddard College. He is dedicated to the idea that human beings are a self-aware expression of the living earth, and that our future depends on awakening to this reality, and remembering how to communicate more effectively with the systems that govern life on this planet. He lives with his wife and kids in the Berkshires, where he enjoys getting out into nature, listening to the Earth, and sitting by a crackling fire or a laughing brook as often as possible. Simple and Easy Ways to ‘Rewild' Your Life by Going Outside (Micah Mortali) It can be easy to think of practices like rewilding and mindfulness as being habits of only extra-zen, nature-based people. Podcast Intro: Kate O'Donnell, author, Ayurvedic Practitioner, and Ashtanga yoga teacher, is well known in this community for her three amazing ‘Everyday Ayurveda' books. In writing these beautiful books, she is following her dharma and describes the process of “giving birth”, but she, unfortunately, hasn't gotten the financial response she was hoping for. Listen in on this conversation between Kate and Cate, as they discuss the book writing process, working with publishers vs. being indie authors, how to make money while writing a book, and so much more. You will learn the importance of using the community to your advantage and how to apply it to sales and marketing. Whether or not you are even considering writing a book, you will surely be inspired! What you'll get out of tuning in: How to present what you are writing about in real-time Why share your book content early on in the writing process How to repurpose your writing in promotional content Why use repetition in your marketing How to embrace your community during your writing process Links/CTA: Check out our FREE Workshops Kate O'Donnell Yoga A Day in my Life - Lex Fridman Highlights: Cate talks about attending a workshop in the past to write a book in one weekend. Cate talks about the importance of leveraging community while writing her latest book ‘Wild Habits'. Cate talks about a recent ayahuasca experience and laughs about trade-offs. Timestamps: 5:35- Book writing as a hobby vs. business strategy 9:11- ‘Wild Habits' writing process with the community 13:41- Identifying the problem the book is solving 15:45- Upselling products before they are built 18:35- Marketing campaigning, repetition, and repurposing 22:47- New books for new levels of community 29:18- The dharma of the desire to write. 31:15- Identifying your avatar 36:07- Chronic inflammation as community-driven conversation 44:00- Using a publisher vs. being an indie author 47:28- The business model of yoga as a book 58:41- Editing with a community as selling through objections in real-time 1:02:30- The economic value ladder 1:07:02- Sharing what you know in real-time 1:13:30- Takeaways Quotes: “As I am writing the book, the book is becoming other things. The question is: How is the book, the product and the business strategy?” “What I've noticed with traditional publishing is it takes so long for the book to be released that by the time it releases you are sort of like ‘I was into that a year and a half ago, I'm not into that right now. I'm into the next book right now.''” “Who you become in the process of writing a book, you are not the same person.” “Your journey is the transformation that only you can lead and then the books you write are field guides, they are in service of that journey.” “Know what the upsell is and then sell it. Go sell it and see what people's real problems are. Now write that into the book.” “If you want to be known for anything, keep repeating yourself.” “People will ask questions at one level of investment, but they will not ask at another level of investment.” “Right now people don't have good leaders. A lot of people that could potentially lead won't learn sales.” Guest: Kate ODonnell Kate O'Donnell is an author, lecturer, and senior yoga teacher. If you have one, take a look at your pet cat or dog. These animals descended from wildcats and wolves, but today live pretty sedate lives, walking around your house and yard, waiting for you to deliver some kibbles to their bowl. My guest today says that modern humans are, in a similar way, domesticated versions of our former, wilder ancestors, and that living a flourishing life requires reconnecting with the primal energy within that now lies dormant. His name is Micah Mortali and he's the founder of the Kripalu School of Mindful Outdoor Leadership and the author of Rewilding: Meditations, Practices, and Skills for Awakening in Nature. Micah first shares how he came to combine his passion for yoga and mindfulness with a love of the outdoors and bushcraft skills to create his unique philosophy of rewilding. We then dig into what rewilding means, and why it's vital to body, mind, and spirit to throw off the malaise of modern domestication and restore your sensory connection to nature. From there we turn to the practices that can help you do that, from walking barefoot in the woods to staring into a campfire to meditate. We also talk about how practicing hands-on ancestral skills like making fire with a bow drill, building a wilderness shelter, and tracking animals can heighten your confidence and awareness. We end our conversation with small things that everyone, even if you live in the suburbs or city, can start doing today to begin rewilding your life. I believe that the world is in a great state of pause and awareness. Many of us are asking the big questions. Is this what life is about? What else is here? Am I doing my life's work? It is from this place that I reached out to my dear friend and colleague, Liza Bertini for her perspective. As yoga teacher, coach, speaker and Dean of the Kripalu School of Yoga, Liza is often in the center of journeys. In this conversation, Liza shares her experience on what it means to find your Dharma or true calling and guides down a fascinating path of discovery to the center of who we are in the world. A timely and beautiful conversation for those of you who are sitting in the chair at a crossroad and are seeking clarity as you explore the possibilities in front of you.

This week my guest is Jurian Hughes. She is the founder of the Fifth Chakra Yoga (Yoga of Voice); co-creator of The Yoga of Yes; a Let Your Yoga Dance® teacher trainer; voice coach; personal mentor; writer; speaker; and theatre performer known for her passionate, playful and engaging teaching style. As a senior faculty member of the Kripalu School of Yoga, Hughes has led thousands of workshops and programs and trained more than 1,000 Kripalu yoga teachers since 2006. In addition to her extensive teaching experience, Hughes has a long theatrical resume spanning Broadway, off-Broadway, Europe, film, television, and the voice-over industry. Are you present in your life and with those around you? In this episode Jurian helps us to understand how being present, even when experiencing discomfort, can be empowering. She offers some examples of how to become comfortable with the uncomfortable. And, together we discuss the notion of being at peace even in moments of uncertainty. Through her own study and decades of practice, she has developed a deep understanding of the ways in which the tools of yoga, dance, voice, mindfulness, and play can be used singularly and together to promote whole-being wellness, increased creativity, and the ability to thrive. She is dedicated to sharing these tools through her workshops, retreats, and trainings at Kripalu and around the world. A bit more on the backstory of Jurian. She grew up in upstate New York, attended Williams College and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and spent two decades cultivating a successful theatre career. After a life in Broadway, film, and TV, at 40 years old she determined that it was time to ‘begin again’ and brought her decades of experience practicing presence, body wisdom, knowledge of breath, and vocal techniques, to fuse with her yoga life. In Jurian’s words: “I’m interested in authenticity and self-expression. The more I practice being fully myself, the more others feel free to do the same. And isn’t that what we all really want?” Show Notes How Jurian brings her talents to the world as a Voice Emancipator, how she teaches people to claim and love their inner voice and what it all means. (7:08) Her struggle to let go of her acting career and how she finally knew it was time to move on. (11:43) Transitioning to a career in corporate events and her thoughts on spending her 40s in Corporate America. (16:41) Realizing that money does not define happiness and going from making the most money she had ever made in her life to making little to no money. “I was making peanuts and I was so happy.” (18:33) How Yoga teaches people to question, “What is your dharma or purpose?” (20:34) In order to find meaning in your work or satisfaction, it has to call something from you. (22:47) The difference in energetic exchanges between physical in-person work and doing the same work virtually, these days, via Zoom. (29:25) Learning to surrender to a moment of risk, much like taking a risk skydiving – take a risk to see what gifts you have for the world and how they are received. (31:41) This is gutsy! Jurian shares what we can take in when it comes to being unafraid and being more present during this time of uncertainty. (40:05) An important reminder that you create your own happiness. What is the connection among burnout prevention, nature, relationships, and being service-oriented? How can we become more mindful everyday and with nature to disconnect in order to connect? Suzie & Chuck explore nature- the more than human world and human nature- relationship meetings, and communication. Chuck shares insight on what a Mindful Outdoor Experience (MOE) is as well as how his previously disconnected life paths truly align. “Mindfulness is anything that gets you into the moment and allows you to focus on what’s happening right now in this present moment without worrying about what the past was or what the future was to hold.” “Many people expect folks like us that are trying to guide people into their emotions and senses- that we’re always happy and don’t have problems. Micah Mortali is the director of the Kripalu School, a certified yoga teacher, and a longtime wilderness guide. With Sounds True, he has published Rewilding: Meditations, Practices, and Skills for Awakening in Nature. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Micah about humanity's growing disconnection from the earth and how "rewilding" can help slow that trend. They talk about rewilding both as individuals and as part of whole ecosystems. Micah also shares the story of an intense, revelatory trail encounter with a bear and comments on the "species loneliness" of urban environments. Mulling the sense of grief they have for humankind's effects on the environment, Tami and Micah consider how modern people can grapple with being in exile from the natural world. Finally, they discuss the barriers many have to reentering nature, as well as ways to initiate your own rewilding experience no matter where you are.(64 minutes)

A sattvic state of mind is one that is naturally calm, clear, and at peace. But when the world tugs at our minds and our egos, it makes them anxious, wild, and scattered making it difficult to feel peace and stability within. In her Ayurvedic Cookbooks, Kate O’Donnell uses food preparation as a way to harness this undisturbed, sattvic state of mind that we desire to cultivate. Today, Kate and I chat about the importance of our daily habits in terms of sukha sadhana and how to bring about a clear, calm internal and external environment with a daily spiritual practice. This practice of becoming more aware of ourselves, more in tune, and more present to each moment can be done using many techniques, from meditation to cooking! Kate O’Donnell and I talk about how to sooth our out of whack doshic energies and how to bring ourselves back into balance, whether we are predominately Vata, Pitta or Kapha. As humans we tend to create less space and more business for ourselves in our day to day lives; it is important to learn to take a step back and invoke slow, steady, healing energy. It’s from this place of grounding that we make good choices, good relationships and create good products. Sattva- natural state of the mind- calm and clear naturally but then it’s pulled on by the universe. The law of the mind is that it is naturally. Her cookbook- the use of food to harness that undisturbed state of mind. Sukha- good space-- within us, around us. Internal and external environments, relationships we cultivate. Sadhana- spiritual practice done daily to cultivate a sattvic state of mind. Our state of mind is cultivated by our daily habits! The mind itself is driving all the activities that are happening in the physical world--like the wizard of Oz! Take concept of mind and mental realm and understand it and how its affecting us- we will have a better grasp on our day to day lifestyle. Sukha Sadhana- process of becoming more aware of ourselves-- creates good space as we go. We are paying attention to LIFE rather than being imbalanced/ running around like chicken with head cut off or like a sloth. -Vata dosha- fall- vata season. Feeling very airy and chaotic, anxiety, overwhelm, depletion, collapse Need to balance go-go energy with Slow energy in order to maintain that go energy. Otherwise will burn out. Food preparation as a way to slow down! When you slow down, the body slowly comes back into right relationship with itself...because mind starts to slow down. Whether we are cutting carrots or doing yoga asana, we are able to slow down in mind and body and they we can experience ourselves in line with nature-- --Pushing the Vata envelope- suppressing the urges to pee, poop, fart, burp--its teh go go go tendency. Conversations of evolution. Root before extending. Pitta pushing envelope- workaholism--lots of vision- we want to make happen. But at end of day--jut business instead of efficiency. Kapha-complacency, resistance to change, lack of creation and lack of fire. Pushing envelope-not moving, no exercise, improper eating. Need the get up and move energy Under-complicate everything- eat one thing all day. What you’ll get out of tuning in: What do Sattva, sukha and sadhana mean and why are they important? How to under-complicate your life by keeping cooking simple. Why is it important to connect with your food? Links Mentioned in Episode: Kate O’Donnell Website - About Me - Kate O’Donnell’s “The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook: A Seasonal Guide to Eating and Living Well” - Amazon Yoga Health Coaching Join Spring Yogidetox Show Highlights: 1:15- Sattva, Sadhana, and Sukha. What do these sanskrit words mean and why are they so important? 9:40- What does a slower, more mindful pace and practice look like in our lives? Kate talks about food preparation as a way for us to slow down and feel nourished! 16:00- What does it look like to push the envelope from a Vata, a Pitta, and a Kapha point of view? What causes and leads to imbalances in our dosha types? 25:30- Food preparation in an efficient way, as a yoga practice or a meditation. Find love for slower, grounding practices, such as cooking. Cooking should be a peaceful, enjoyable practice done with friends or family, as opposed to having a “get it done” mentality. If this isn’t how you feel when you cook, take a class and learn new techniques to enjoy the practice of cooking nourishing foods! Favorite Quotes: “The law of the mind is naturally calm and clear and undisturbed.” -Kate O’Donnell “The mind itself is driving all the activities that are happening in the physical world.” -Kate O’Donnell “For all the go-go-go in our days, we need some slow-slow-slow!” -Kate O’Donnell Guest BIO: Kate O’Donnell is an author, lecturer, and senior yoga teacher. I love these juicy conversations with author, lecturer, and yoga instructor, Kate O’Donnell. Today, we jump right into how our awareness expands and changes as we dive deeper into the studies of yoga and Ayurveda, and how we can expect ourselves and our physiology to change and evolve on our growth paths. There is a greater sensitivity that we begin to notice in our bodies as we move into a deeper attunement with nature and the universe. We intuitively begin to move away from over processed foods, scary movies, loud music, late nights, and over indulging in the things we used to find pleasurable. We learn what it feels like to be truly healthy at a deep, cellular level and what it means to be seated in the self. We learn that some resistance to new routines can be a good thing and that the clear, peaceful, grounding of energy of sattva is much more nourishing than the fast-paced and stimulating energy of rajas. Join us today in this fascinating podcast to learn about your growth path and where your yogic path is taking you. What you’ll get out of tuning in: How can you expect to evolve, as someone who practices yoga and Ayurveda? What are the gunas and how do they play a role in our lives? How a bit of mental and physical resistance can be a good thing. Links Mentioned in Episode: Kate's Website Kate's Facebook Discover more about Body Thrive Show Highlights: 1:45- Cate Stillman and Kate O’Donnell discuss how life can change and what can be expected on our growth paths as we continue to practice and study yoga and Ayurveda. The body’s sensitivity changes and expands as we age and gain life experience; our tastes for food, drink, movies, music, people, etc. morphs as our physiology uplevels and the word ‘pure’ takes on a new meaning. 18:15- In order to fully learn something, sometimes we need to take 2 steps forward and one step back. We chat about the ‘gunas’ and what the qualities of sattva, rajas, and tamas mean and how these energies play out in our lives. 26:30- The energy of tamas and its tendency towards complacency. How a sattvic, calm, still, peaceful state of mind is different from a tamasic, complacent, or lazy way of being. Favorite Quotes: “Your physiology has the technology to live in such a high level of resonance that you can tell if something is a fit or not a fit immediately. ”-Cate Stillman “True confidence comes from being seated in the self.” -Kate O’Donnell “Paying attention to how we eat actually is a spiritual practice. In 1990, Sharon and a friend decided to take a yoga class at the local recreation center. Sharon was always very physical (skiing, running, biking), and yoga was another interesting physical challenge to explore. She ended up finding so much more than a physical practice. She studied Anusara yoga when she wanted to explore a more feminine path. She studied yoga therapy when she was called to work one-on-one with people to support them in finding and using the yoga practices that were best for them.. As she continued to evolve, so did her yoga practice. She started to be drawn to the more contemplative aspects of yoga and was moved to study in the Kripalu School. Most recently, she has studied yoga nidra to open up to the meditative yoga practices. Sharon beautifully shares her story of how her yoga practice for the last 24 years has been an ever evolving series of shifts and explorations and openings for her. Be sure to try her yoga nidra practice to connect to your heart's desire.
