fWotD Episode 2723: Galileo project Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 18 October 2024 is Galileo project.Galileo was an American robotic space program that studied the planet Jupiter and its moons, as well as several other Solar System bodies. Named after the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei, the Galileo spacecraft consisted of an orbiter and an atmospheric entry probe. It was delivered into Earth orbit on October 18, 1989, by Space Shuttle Atlantis on the STS-34 mission, and arrived at Jupiter on December 7, 1995, after gravity assist flybys of Venus and Earth, and became the first spacecraft to orbit Jupiter. The spacecraft then launched the first probe to directly measure its atmosphere. Despite suffering major antenna problems, Galileo achieved the first asteroid flyby, of 951 Gaspra, and discovered the first asteroid moon, Dactyl, around 243 Ida. In 1994, Galileo observed Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9's collision with Jupiter.Jupiter's atmospheric composition and ammonia clouds were recorded, as were the volcanism and plasma interactions on Io with Jupiter's atmosphere. The data Galileo collected supported the theory of a liquid ocean under the icy surface of Europa, and there were indications of similar liquid-saltwater layers under the surfaces of Ganymede and Callisto. Ganymede was shown to possess a magnetic field and the spacecraft found new evidence for exospheres around Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Galileo also discovered that Jupiter's faint ring system consists of dust from impact events on the four small inner moons. The extent and structure of Jupiter's magnetosphere was also mapped. The primary mission concluded on December 7, 1997, but the Galileo orbiter commenced an extended mission known as the Galileo Europa Mission (GEM), which ran until December 31, 1999. By the time GEM ended, most of the spacecraft was operating well beyond its original design specifications, having absorbed three times the radiation exposure that it had been built to withstand. Many of the instruments were no longer operating at peak performance, but were still functional, so a second extension, the Galileo Millennium Mission (GMM) was authorized. On September 20, 2003, after 14 years in space and 8 years in the Jovian system, Galileo's mission was terminated by sending it into Jupiter's atmosphere at a speed of over 48 kilometers per second (30 mi/s) to eliminate the possibility of contaminating the moons with terrestrial bacteria. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:37 UTC on Friday, 18 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Galileo project on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Danielle.

If you want to skip ahead to our picture book section, start at 27 minutes) This week we're reading books that feature dinosaurs! Our chapter book is Dactyl Hill Squad by Daniel José Older, which blends historical fiction and fantasy as we follow the adventures a gang of kids from the Coloured Orphan Asylum in 1863 New York, but in a world inhabited by both people and dinosaurs. Our picture book is Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs, as retold by Mo Willems – classic Goldilocks story but, again, with dinosaurs, as well as a healthy dose of wry sarcasm, which we've got plenty time for.

OpenAI’s Dactyl is an AI system that can manipulate objects with a human-like robot hand. OpenAI Five is an AI system that can defeat humans at the video game Dota 2. The strange thing is they were both developed using the same general-purpose reinforcement learning algorithm. How is this possible and what does it show? In today's interview Jack Clark, Policy Director at OpenAI, explains that from a computational perspective using a hand and playing Dota 2 are remarkably similar problems. A robot hand needs to hold an object, move its fingers, and rotate it to the desired position. In Dota 2 you control a team of several different people, moving them around a map to attack an enemy. Your hand has 20 or 30 different joints to move. The number of main actions in Dota 2 is 10 to 20, as you move your characters around a map. When you’re rotating an objecting in your hand, you sense its friction, but you don’t directly perceive the entire shape of the object. In Dota 2, you're unable to see the entire map and perceive what's there by moving around – metaphorically 'touching' the space. Read our new in-depth article on becoming an AI policy specialist: The case for building expertise to work on US AI policy, and how to do it Links to learn more, summary and full transcript This is true of many apparently distinct problems in life. Compressing different sensory inputs down to a fundamental computational problem which we know how to solve only requires the right general-purpose software. The creation of such increasingly 'broad-spectrum' learning algorithms like has been a key story of the last few years, and this development like have unpredictable consequences, heightening the huge challenges that already exist in AI policy. Today’s interview is a mega-AI-policy-quad episode; Jack is joined by his colleagues Amanda Askell and Miles Brundage, on the day they released their fascinating and controversial large general language model GPT-2. We discuss: • What are the most significant changes in the AI policy world over the last year or two? • What capabilities are likely to develop over the next five, 10, 15, 20 years? • How much should we focus on the next couple of years, versus the next couple of decades? • How should we approach possible malicious uses of AI? • What are some of the potential ways OpenAI could make things worse, and how can they be avoided? • Publication norms for AI research • Where do we stand in terms of arms races between countries or different AI labs? • The case for creating newsletters • Should the AI community have a closer relationship to the military? • Working at OpenAI vs. working in the US government • How valuable is Twitter in the AI policy world? Rob is then joined by two of his colleagues – Niel Bowerman & Michelle Hutchinson – to quickly discuss: • The reaction to OpenAI's release of GPT-2 • Jack’s critique of our US AI policy article • How valuable are roles in government? • Where do you start if you want to write content for a specific audience? “In biosemiotics, we say that the human ability to interpret signs—which is the ability to think really, to think creatively and adaptively and learn new things—didn't just emerge with animals; rudimentary sign reading emerged in the simplest forms of life with single-celled organisms,” says Victoria Alexander, biosemiotician, Director of Dactyl Foundation, Fulbright specialist, and author of The Biologist's Mistress: Rethinking Self-Organization in Art, Literature, and Nature. What's biosemiotics, you ask? Alexander explains biosemiotics as the study of sign use in biological systems, where signs can be almost anything in the environment—a word, a pictogram, a smell, a sound, or a chemical gradient. Signs are intelligence; we can train a computer to read signs, but can we train a computer to interpret signs that depend on the context within which they exist? Answering this question is one aspect of the investigation into the differences between biological and artificial intelligence, which is what Alexander's work is currently focused on. She explains that biological cells don't just react to the chemistry around them, but interpret and respond to it. She goes on to explain how this underlies a system of interpretation that's related to random change in a way that's changing the direction of evolution. In this way, Alexander argues that it is within the organism that evolutionary agency is found and explained, rather than in the mechanisms of randomness and competition. Alexander offers an exciting and informative conversation that touches on a variety of topics, including metabolic pathways, the association of properties and the placebo effect, the idea that dysfunctional semiotic habits are the cause of some syndromes and conditions, cell differentiation, self-organization in nature, and butterfly wing pattern development. MMA Fancast E4 Jon Jones might have his suspension reduced Amanda Nunes on UFC 207: Fighting Ronda Rousey is a ‘giftʼ, it will change my life “Iʼm very happy. This fight is a gift – it will change my life,” Nunes told MMA Junkie. “She can be the favorite, thereʼs no problem. Our encounter is going to be on Dec. 30, and then it will be something else – it will be just me and her in there. Iʼm certainly going to win and, faith in God, leave that night as a champion.” Rousey preparing for Nunes with Olympic Boxer Bisping talking smack on Brock Lesnar “Brock Lesnar tested positive for steroids, it’s as simple as that,” Bisping said. “I have a very strong opinion, so if you’re going to come over here and fight and take steroids, you’re a pussy. Simple as that. You come in here and act tough, but then you’ve got to take steroids? So which is it? Are you are tough guy or are you not a tough guy? And if you’re taking steroids, then you’re not a tough guy, because you’re mentally weak and you’re a coward.” Bisping looking at Weidman next, but ‘business-wise, nobody caresʼ about him Weidman suggests Bisping would be his easiest fight in year Dan Henderson is angry about the decision from his UFC 204 loss to Michael Bisping The GSP situation
[spp-optin] In this inaugural episode of MMA Fancast, the crew discusses a variety of topics, including Conor McGregor. The MMA world has been buzzing with the announcement of the UFC 205 fight card. This is truly a fight card of historic proportions. Jim Miller will be scrapping with Thiago Alves, Tim Boetsch will have a middleweight battle with Rafael Natal, Tim Kennedy will go toe to toe with Rashad Evans, Khabib Nurmagomedov takes his undefeated 23-0 record to Michael Johnson and Frankie Edgar will square off against Jeremy Stevens. This should be quite a card! Did we mention that we have not even started talking about the 6 fight main card yet??? Miesha Tate returns from her short title reign, ready to fight and claw her way back to the title picture again. But first, she’ll have to get by Raquel Pennington, who is riding a nice 3 fight win streak. Another fighter, Chris Weidman, will also be back in action for the first time since losing his title (and also suffering his first MMA defeat) against fellow one loss warrior Yoel Romero, who is looking to increase his undefeated UFC record to 8-0. There will also be a cowboy on the loose in Manhattan on November 12th as Donald Cerrone attempts to bring the pain to Kelvin Gastelum, who is riding high from his UFC 200 win over Johny Hendricks. So we now know that this is going to be an amazing night of fights! But there is something that we still have not revealed to you. There are also not one, not two, but THREE, yes THREE titles on the line! Joanna Jedrzejczyk puts her belt and undefeated record on the line against the Polish Princess, Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Both fighters come in with perfect records and it will be the perfect night for one of them to be crowned the champion! In the night’s co-main event, newly crowned champion Tyron Woodley will bring his bad self up against the likes of Wonderboy, Stephen Thompson. Wonderboy is riding a 7 fight win streak and hasn’t lost since a decision loss to Matt Brown in 2012 while Tyron is fresh off his title winning, 1st round knockout of Robbie Lawler. Then finally, in the main event of the evening, The Notorious Conor McGregor brings his brash self to try making history against The Silent Assassin, Eddie Alvarez. Alvarez is coming off of his TKO, lightweight title winning domination of Rafael dos Anjos while the Notorious One is looking to continue his momentum after avenging his only UFC loss to Nate Diaz. Rydog, Sahara and Mr. Dactyl discuss the UFC 205 press conference and the brilliance of Conor McGregor. Also on their minds was Jose Aldo’s demands and wondering if fighters are not seeing the bigger picture when getting the exposure created by guys like CM Punk. The crossover appeal that exists in WWE and other sports is very real and fellows share some personal experiences for UFC 203. Hosted by Ryan Middleton, Jim “Sahara” Mooney and Dan “The Terry Dactyl” Altieri.

Franck Marchis, UC Berkeley and the SETI InstituteSince the discovery of Ida’s companion Dactyl in 1993, the number of known multiple asteroids has been continuously increasing and ~165 of them are now known. Since 2003, Dr. Marchis and his colleagues have been conducting a large survey of these interesting and diverse populations using various ground-based telescopes and techniques, such as high angular resolution imaging, lightcurve photometry, and VIS/NIR spectroscopy, and also the Spitzer and Hubble space telescopes. Dr. Marchis ' talk will cover the latest insights into these multiple systems, such as the sizes and shapes of their components, their bulk-density and their orbital parameters, which are key to understanding how they formed and evolved.play video
