It's Christmas and that means all three Hines brothers are under one roof and that means all three Hines brothers (Will, Kevin and Brian) are on the podcast. We decide to talk about Power Pack -- a superhero group of siblings that was first published in 1984. We three brothers all loved the series when it came out and it was fun to revisit it.  Power Pack was more revolutionary than it might have seemed. In an era of increasing violence and grittiness in mainstream comics, Power Pack remained focused on gentler powers and feelings. The siblings, although they do squabble, care for each other. The villains -- although dangers -- are of the "fantasy" realm, not crime/gritty/pulpy variety. It was one of the first big writing forays for Louise Simonson, who had previously mostly been an editor. And it was one of the few -- perhaps the first? -- major Marvel title to be written and drawn by female creators (Louise and artist June Brigman).  Power Pack originally ran for 62 issues -- a more than respectable run. They had excellent crossovers with both The Fantastic Four and X-Men (as former editor of X-Men, Louise had worked with FF writer/artist John Byrner and X-Writer Chris Claremont). To this day, the Power Pack will show up in Marvel comics, much to our delight. For Loose Screws we discuss: UK comedian Daniel Kitson, the quality of Santa sleigh in the film Elf and the new Superman movie trailer.

Not just a new logo – thanks Drew Millward – on this new episode of The James McMahon Music Podcast. Oh no! This time round I'm speaking to James Smith, singer – or should that be speaker – in Leeds based mumble punks Yard Act. That band might just have made my favourite album of 2022 so far. The record is called The Overload. It's their debut. It got to number 2 in the actual UK pop charts, and as I wrote on my Substack but a month ago – no really, you should subscribe! – it's a record that speaks to me about the things I know intuitively. Yorkshire, the British working class… and so, over the course of an hour - one of this podcast's longest episodes to date - I talk to James about the writing of album two, being a decade long overnight success, building a life, the weirdness of ageing… oh lots of things. But mainly we use the podcast as an excuse to try and get Daniel Kitson to come for tea. If you're reading this Daniel, give us a sign. The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. What can screenwriters learn from the storytelling techniques used by stand-up comedians? Standup comedians can keep audiences gripped to their every word for over an hour, and often bring them to emotional climaxes by the end. So how do they do it and what tools can apply to scripted narratives? For this deep dive into standup, Stu and Chas are joined by the super-talented comic and podcaster Alice Fraser. Which is rather fortuitous. Because not only are we schooled on comedy techniques, but because Alice also has a Masters in Narrative Rhetoric. So as we dive in to NANETTE by Hannah Gadsby, BABY COBRA by Ali Wong and IT'S THE FIREWORKS TALKING by Daniel Kitson (with more than a passing reference to Alice's own show SAVAGE and INSIDE by Bo Burnham), we analyse narrative structure, transitions, set-ups and pay-offs used by stand-ups… But we end up focusing on exploring thematic tools - particularly the Aristotelean concepts of the rhetorical triangle: logos (how the story is told), ethos (who the storyteller is), and pathos (how the audience emotionally engages). With these powers combined, storytellers of all kinds can produce work of thematic power and resonance. Or just funny. And in backmatter, we discuss adapting Savage for the recorded stage with Alice! Enjoy! Spoilers abound. Audio excerpts used for educational purposes. Hi there, this is Callum, I’m the new intern here at SILENCE! My first real task is to write a blurb for Gary and The Beast. I’ll try to do as good a job as I can because I love SILENCE! and the Mr. Die and Mr. Lactus have promised me a well paid job if I perform well. They’re great guys and are always joshing and laughing. They laughed loads when they told me about all the money I’ll be making here at SILENCE! after my 4 year apprenticeship comes to an end. So first we start with a song lyric. I CAN FEEL IT COMING IN THE AIR TONIGHT OH LORD Hope they like that one, it’s one of my granpa’s faves. Then it’s basically a list of the things they talked about in the episode but you have to make it interesting somehow as the blurb is the most important part of the podcast; everyone reads it and it’s really important. So, my brilliant bosses did a really great episode of SILENCE! this week. They did lots of really funny talking and are great guys. I liked it when they talked about sponsorship and the very exciting special 250th issue of SILENCE! which is just around the corner. I liked it when Mr. Die talked about Maria Bamford and Mr. Lactus talked about Daniel Kitson. Then I liked it when SILENCE! Because the Film Has Started with Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther and Lake Mungo Then I liked it when The Reviewniverse with Mister Miracle and Ice Cream Man and Crawl Space and By This Shall You Know Him and Vampironica and Dry County and Tailgunner Jo then I liked it when it ended and then I went home for tea.

James Acaster is "one of the sharpest comic minds to have emerged in recent years" (Guardian). In addition to his success in live stand-up James has also appeared on many Television and Radio Shows across the country. In August 2010 James performed as part of BBC's 'Stand Up in the Street' during the Edinburgh festival. He also graced his comedy brilliance on Australian TV show 'Australia Versus' and was one of the Co Hosts of 'My First Gig' on Resonance FM. James has appeared on Russell Howard's Good News (BBC Three), Dave’s One Night Stand (Dave), Chris Addison’s Show and Tell (E4), Live at The Comedy Store (Paramount), Three @ The Fringe (BBC Three), Russell Kane’s Whistle-stop Tour (BBC Radio 4) and the Edinburgh Fest Comedy Gala for BBC Three. This year James returns with his low-key whimsical routines and trivial stories for his new show ‘Lawnmower’. The show will see James attempting to clear Yoko Ono's name, tackle the hardest questionnaire question of all time and figure out how happy he is with his smile! ‘Lawnmower’ follows on from acclaimed success in both 2011 & 2012, the latter of which 'Prompt' garnered him a coveted Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination for Best Show as well as four and five star reviews across the board. Most recently James has recorded his own pilot for BBC Radio 4, ‘James Acaster’s Findings’ in which he presents the results of his in-depth research into the subject of bread, assisted by his trusty sidekick Nathaniel Metcalfe. He is also a weekly fixture on Josh Widdicombe’s XFM radio show. “Deliciously daft and no slouch in the surprises department” EVENING STANDARD **** “One of the best pieces of straight stand-up at this year’s festival.” TIME OUT **** “…Debunks lad attitude (the antithesis of this charity shop chic jester) in a style reminiscent of Stewart Lee /Richard Herring, but suffused with enough of his own personality to sound crisp and fresh.” INDEPENDENT **** “Welcome to one of the funniest shows on the Fringe this year.” LONDON IS FUNNY **** “It's a mixed style of story-telling and philosophising that hasn't been perfected so well since possibly Daniel Kitson.” SCOTSMAN ***** - Sara Shulman is the Founder and Editor of Comedy Blogedy, TEDxUCL speaker on 'The Power of Funny', former Head of Comedy at UCLU Rare FM and produces the Humour Me Comedy Podcast.
