One of the distinctives of the Charlotte Mason Method is that it is relational education. The Method also applies to all of life, and so we start with the foundational relationship in our students' lives: their relationship with their parents. In this episode of the podcast, we look at the two extremes, and learn from Charlotte Mason how to strike a balance that leads to life--for both parent and child. School Education, Volume 3 of the Home Education Series by Charlotte M. Mason, chapters 1-3 "...it is far easier to govern from a height, as it were, than from the intimacy of close personal contact. But you cannot be quite frank and easy with beings who are obviously of a higher and of another order than yourself." (3/4) "Parents and teachers, because their subjects are so docile and so feeble, are tempted more than others to the arbitrary temper..." (3/11) "Autocracy is defined as independent or self-derived power...Autocracy has ever a drastic penal code, whether in the kingdom, the school, or the family. It has, too, many commandments. 'Thou shalt' and 'thou shalt not' ... The tendency to assume self-derived power is common to us all, even the meekest of us, and calls for special watchfulness; the more so, because it shows itself fully as often in remitting duties and in granting indulgences as in inflicting punishments." (3/15-16) "Locke promulgated the doctrine of the infallible reason. That doctrine accepted, individual reason becomes the ultimate authority, and every man is free to do that which is right in his own eyes...the principle of the infallible reason is directly antagonistic to the idea of authority." (3/5-6) "[B]ut wise parents steer a middle course. They are careful to form habits upon which the routine of life runs easily, and, when the exceptional event requires a new regulation, they may make casual mention of their reasons for having so and so done ; or, if this is not convenient and the case is a trying one, they give the children the reason for all obedience-"for this is right." In a word, authority avoids, so far as may be, giving cause of offence." (3/22) "[A]uthority is vested in the office and not in the person; that the moment it is treated as a personal attribute it is forfeited. We know that a person in authority is a person authorised ; and that he who is authorised is under authority." (3/12) "Authority is neither harsh nor indulgent. She is gentle and easy to be entreated in all matters immaterial, just because she is immovable in matters of real importance; for these, there is always a fixed principle. It does not, for example, rest with parents and teachers to dally with questions affecting either the health or the duty of their children. They have no authority to allow children in indulgences... Authority is alert; she knows all that is going on and is aware of tendencies...It sometimes happens that children, and not their parents, have right on their side: a claim may be made or an injunction resisted, and the children are in opposition to parent or teacher. It is well for the latter to get the habit of swiftly and imperceptibly reviewing the situation; possibly, the children may be in the right, and the parent may gather up his wits in time to yield the point graciously and send the little rebels away in a glow of love and loyalty." (3/17) "Authority is that aspect of love which parents present to their children; parents know it is love, because to them it means continual self-denial, self-repression, self-sacrifice: children recognise it as love, because to them it means quiet rest and gaiety of heart." (3/24) "The constraining power should be present, but passive, so that the child may not feel himself hemmed in without choice. That free-will of man, which has for ages exercised faithful souls who would prefer to be compelled into all righteousness and obedience, is after all a pattern for parents. The child who is good because he must be so, loses in power of initiative more than he gains in seemly behaviour. Every time a child feels that he chooses to obey of his own accord, his power of initiative is strengthened." (3/31) "We shall give children space to develop on the lines of their own characters in all right ways, and shall know how to intervene effectually to prevent those errors which, also, are proper to their individual characters." (3/35) "'Wise passiveness.' It indicates the power to act, the desire to act, and the insight and self-restraint which forbid action. But there is, from our point of view at any rate, a further idea conveyed in 'masterly inactivity.' The mastery is not over ourselves only; there is also a sense of authority, which our children should be as much aware of when it is inactive as when they are doing our bidding." (3/28) "Further, though the emancipation of the children is gradual, they acquiring day by day more of the art and science of self-government, yet there comes a day when the parents, right to rule is over; there is nothing left for them but to abdicate gracefully, and leave their grown-up sons and daughters free agents, even though these still live at home; and although, in the eyes of their parents, they are not fit to be trusted with the ordering of themselves: if they fail in such self-ordering, whether as regards time, occupations, money, friends, most likely their parents are to blame for not having introduced them by degrees to the full liberty which is their right as men and women. Anyway, it is too late now to keep them in training; fit or unfit, they must hold the rudder for themselves." First ReadingACTS 8:26-4026But an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is a desert road. 27And he rose and went. And behold, an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a minister of the Can'dace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of all her treasure, had come to Jerusalem to worship 28and was returning; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and join this chariot." 30So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?"31And he said, "How can I, unless some one guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32Now the passage of the scripture which he was reading was this: "As a sheep led to the slaughter or a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he opens not his mouth. 33In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken up from the earth." 34And the eunuch said to Philip, "About whom, pray, does the prophet say this, about himself or about some one else?" 35Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this scripture he told him the good news of Jesus. 36And as they went along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "See, here is water! What is to prevent my being baptized?" 38And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught up Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.40But Philip was found at Azo'tus, and passing on he preached the gospel to all the towns till he came to Caesare'a.

Our Lady is a perfect model of holiness and love. Heading towards Pentecost, we can reflect on her relationship with her Divine Spouse, the Holy Spirit. To have God's Spirit is to have Christ's own motivation, to be inspired by the same spirit that he was. We see this in Mary, who says "Be it done unto me according to your word." The Spirit is a renewer of the soul. To have the Spirit as our spirit pays off in spades, namely, the beautiful fruits of the Holy Spirit. https://comeawaybyyourselves.com

Matthew 26:31-46 Guest- Tony Ramirez Let us Glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ In whom in our salvation Jesus teaches us in the Garden of Gethsemane that feeling sorrow and distress are not sins. Docility and humility can lend a hand when we are in these spots.
In this episode I'll discuss the big idea of authority: what it is, why it's important, and how parents can maintain loving authority in their homes. The principles of authority and docility are important enough that Charlotte Mason placed them as principles 3 and 4 in her 20 principles of education: “The principles of authority on the one hand, and of obedience on the other, are natural, necessary and fundamental; but-- These principles are limited by the respect due to the personality of children, which must not be encroached upon whether by the direct use of fear or love, suggestion or influence, or by undue play upon any one natural desire. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jessica9025/support
What is necessary for our being conformed to God's plan for us? Docility. Abandonment. Living in the present moment. Each of us is meant to be a unique artistic production produced by God the Father. He has in mind His Son, His Word, through whom we were created. He is making us like unto Him by all He allows to happen to us.

Mary often is described as docile, which people tend to equate with being a doormat. But she certainly was not a doormat. Docility is completely different, and Mary is the perfect example. We should strive to imitate her in this regard. Listen as Marge gives five key facets of Mary's docility and explains how we can – and should – imitate them in our daily lives.

Moms know a thing about tension, about holding two things in balance: speaking and silence, instruction and waiting, pizza and broccoli. Understanding the complementary particulars of home life and nurturing children is kind of our job. As we head into the next principle, just remember: you've been training for this in so many ways before today. In her third principle, Mason shares two ideas that are natural, necessary, and fundamental to the homeschool but must be held in tension with one another: authority and docility. Now, what exactly does that mean? ----------You can find the full episode notes here. ---------Interested in hearing bonus mini episodes, reading book reviews, joining in discussions about classical education, and more? Besides a richer sacramental life of the Eucharist and confession, what does St Philip want his children to do? Work for the truth, work for the salvation and well-being of others. In this episode we read about the origins of the most famous History of the Church ever written, the Annales Ecclesiastici, the Year by Year History of the Church by Cesare Baronio (or Baronius). By an inspiration of the Holy Spirit, St Philip recognized that Baronio could answer the destructive Protestant history, the Centuries of Magdeburg. But St Philip did not unfold the plan all at once to Baronio. Contrary to his own ideas and plans, Baronio followed the commands of St Philip. And thus the most famous Catholic historian was borne! Last episode we heard about the sacrament of confession through a story involving Baronius. When all he wanted to do was have time for himself and his own plans, Baronio was ordered by St Philip to go to the hospital of the Holy Spirit, about a 10-15 minute walk away. There he found a man on the point of death who had not made a final confession. With Baronio's help, the man made his confession to the Chaplain. How blessed we are to have opportunities to make confession, to be reconciled to God, to grow in holiness!

The challenge of today's leader is to combat docility. Of course, it's a dream of those with power to have everyone on your team do everything you want without complaint or question, but that's how authoritarianism works, not democracy. Maybe your organization is less like a democratic institution and more like a monarchy. Download this episode Mary Jane Fox and her husband had a re-awakening of their Catholic faith in the 1980's. While on a trip through the Holy Land, they were directed by a local priest to take a silent walk along the Sea of Galilee. There, Jesus unmistakably spoke to them each. In September 1986, Tom and Mary Jane Fox left their respective careers in hotel management and the travel industry to work full-time for St. Matthew Catholic Church. For the first seven years, their main ministry was door-to-door home visitation; in the first few years, they visited over 10,000 families. They also helped establish other outreach ministries at St. Matthew. In 1993, they founded an Apostolate called the Pilgrim Center of Hope - dedicated to the New Evangelization with a mission of guiding people to encounter Christ through Conferences, social media, radio program, parish programs and pilgrimages. Their ministry of pilgrimages has led them to Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Greece and Turkey. Their specialty (and dearest to their hearts) is the Holy Land, having traveled there more than 56 times since 1986. Mary Jane is also the founder of the Catholic Women's Conference (CWC), an annual event for women founded in 2001. It is the longest running Catholic Women's Conference in the Nation with a mission to foster an appreciation for the personal dignity of women, to encourage women to know and love God, and to inspire them to use their feminine gifts for the transformation of family and society. The CWC is an event for healing, for spiritual direction, for receiving tools for everyday living and resources for education. One of Mary Jane's mottos: All women are welcome. You don't have to be perfect to begin anew in Christ! In this episode, Mary Jane reveals the amazing story of how she and her husband, Deacon Tom, began their work in ministry which ultimately lead them to founding The Pilgrim Center of Hope. After hearing a special calling to reach women from all walks of life, Mary Jane founded the Catholic Women's Conference. This special event offers a place for healing and commiserating with other women on the pilgrim path to greater union with God. Charlotte Mason's foundational principles encompass the relationship of parent and child. This is the third part of a series of podcast episodes discussing the role of "authority and docility" and particularly addresses the child's side of the relationship.
Charlotte Mason had much to say about parenting and this week's episode addresses the role of parents, their responsibilities, attitudes, and weaknesses. Mason was clear about the dignified office of authority in order to lead, guide, protect, and inspire our children to fulfill their role as obedient, peaceful, and joyful persons.
Charlotte Mason addressed parenting issues in concurrence with her philosophy of education. This podcast episode is the first of a three-part series on her third principle of "authority and docility." The first portion today concerns the right view of authority in our lives.
In this second of a two part series on the Holy Spirit, Mark and Frances speak about the work of the Holy Spirit in our individual souls. After providing a brief list of the names given to the Holy Spirit, the conversation moves to a deeper exploration of role of the Holy Spirit in the work of our sanctification. As the Church teaches this all a work of Grace, so Mark and Frances take the time to describe the two elements of Grace and how they each play a unique role in our sanctification. After describing the more Theological aspects of the working of Grace, they go on to provide a detailed explanation of the more practical aspects of Grace and how individual souls might go about securing Grace for themselves. The single greatest source of Grace of course are the Sacraments of the Church, but not all receive the Sacraments to the same degree, or with the same degree of preparation, and therefore not everyone receives the same amount of Grace, even though they may attend the same Mass. The conversation also explore the important role of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and the Trinity. Here Mark and Frances investigate how we each soul might best prepare ourselves to cooperate with this work of the Trinity, this is most especially done through prayer.

As an Apostle of the Holy Spirit, St. Mary (aka Mariam, the little Arab) of Jesus Crucified shows us how, through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience, in the foundation of humility, one grows ever more docile to the Holy Spirit. In the trajectory of her life, she crossed boundaries of all kinds […]
