Before ‘The X Factor' and ‘The Voice', there was ‘Pop Idol', the ITV behemoth that spawned Simon Fuller's global mega-hit ‘American Idol'.  Season One climaxed on 9th February, 2002, when Gareth Gates - a 17-year-old former head chorister - and Will Young - a politely-spoken 23-year-old alumnus of Wellington College - slugged it out for the title of Pop Idol champion. Britain was captivated as the public strove to choose their favourite cover version of an unreleased Westlife album track - with over 15 million people tuning in, and 8.7 million casting their votes via telephone. Will emerged as the winner, but perhaps the real winner was the format - which centred the Judges, particularly ‘Nasty' Simon Cowell, in a way that would inspire dozens of talent show successors. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly recall how producer Nigel Lythgoe ramped up the ‘battle' element of the competition with rosettes and battle buses; consider the homophobic coverage of Young's sexuality in the mainstream media; and reveal Rebecca's place in Pop Idol history…  Further Reading: • ‘And your new Pop Idol is... Feeling a deep sense of belonging and having her confident personality nurtured by her dance teachers, Ali developed a deep passion for Dance teaching that carried into her high school years. At the age of 17 she was invited to begin a dance class for adults with disabilities and parallel to completing her Bachelor of Dance at The Queensland University of Technology, she went on to create her current legacy - Bust a Move Dance - a dance company running classes for kids, teens and adults with disabilities.Throughout her 20s BAMDance acted as the vehicle for Alis blossoming passion for creating safe dance spaces, intentional dance education and Conscious Dance Leadership. She guided her company to perform at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles in 2015 as well as being personally invited by Nigel Lythgoe to perform on both So You Think You Can Dance US and at the Dizzy Feet Gala. As a result BAMDance grew extensively across the greater Brisbane area and in 2017 Ali made the move to Toronto Canada where she began its 2nd branch. With directing BAMDance at an international level, Ali now spends the majority of her time training other dance teachers on how to create more inclusive dance spaces as well as coaching dance entrepreneurs who want to grow intentional and conscious dance businesses. The first series of Gladiators was like the painting the Sistine Chapel - expensive and time-consuming but such a smash hit that there was no looking back for executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. He loved the show before it even started and knew it was a smash, but couldn't say so before it was broadcast, but he was so right. They had to be tough, strong and beautiful but connecting with the audience was vital for the Gladiators - and Wolf was just the perfect baddie but Shadow broke Nigel's heart. And his show was far better than the USA counterpart which is why the states came calling for him to take over. But a celebrity version could so easily have ended badly after Vinnie Jones arrived. Have you got a Gladiators tale to tell? These days, Nigel Lythgoe is enjoying the success he's had with creating shows, such as "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance." From a young age, Lythgoe knew he wanted to entertain, and when his parents offered to pay for tap dancing lessons, he jumped at the opportunity. Lythgoe stuck with dancing, and it eventually paid off when he went on to choreograph for BBC, which led him to produce bigger shows in the U.K., such as "Pop Stars" and "Pop Idol." For Lythgoe, the chance to support people in pursuit of their dreams is the biggest payoff, so he created the American Dance Movement foundation to bring dance to those who need it most.
