Val Kilmer played Jim Morrison in 1991's The Doors to great acclaim but was, alas, snubbed by the Academy. People are strange, eh? Yes, the movie's release was attacked by fans and former band members of The Doors for its alleged inaccuracies and exaggerations. But now, years later, were movie audiences just riders on the storm of bad press? Upon rewatch, does the Oliver Stone movie provide some truth among the spectacle? And was Meg Ryan the best choice for Pam? The Old Roommates attempt to light your fire with a revisit through their middle-aged lens. We lost another giant in the world of acting. Val Kilmer was a cool, funny at times with a smooth style that will never be matched. Kilmer passed away this past Tuesday, of pneumonia, after a long battle with throat cancer. The first minutes was dedicated to his final screen appearance with Tom Cruise in Top Gun Maverick. We also listened to an interview with Larry King on the thoughts of another Top Gun movie. Rest in peace to Doc Holliday, Iceman and my personal favorite when he played Jim Morrison in the movie, The Doors. Alex Ovechkin is one goal away from the record that we all thought that couldn't be broken, Wayne Gretzky's record for the most regular season goals. Both are currently tied with 894 career goals. Today, history could be made. The NFL Draft is coming up in 18 days, as we get closer, we will talk more about it. The NCAA championships are here. Florida and Houston on the mens side and UConn and South Carolina on the ladies side. Good luck to all. We will be back next week with Episode 264. Enjoy the rest of your Sports Weekend. The GURU will see you real soon.

“The Doors” is a film that will likely divide audiences. Those who appreciate Olivet Stone's kinetic style and Kilmer's intense performance will find much to admire, but those looking for a more balanced or nuanced portrayal of the band may be disappointed. The movie captures the energy and chaos of The Doors, but in doing so, it sometimes loses sight of the complexity and artistry that made them more than just another rock band.
Rock & roll journalist, author, and photographer Michael Goldberg is back on the podcast. He's got a brand new book titled Jukebox: 1967-2023 Photographs.Michael is best known as a writer, but for over 50 years he's also been photographing musicians and the photos in Jukebox are drawn from the thousands he's taken over the years. Included are photos of the Sex Pistols, Devo, the Clash, Bruce Springsteen, Jim Morrison, Lou Reed, Janis Joplin, Muddy Waters, Patti Smith, the Who, Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Grace Slick and Paul Kantner, Tom Waits, The Ramones, and many many more. Most of the photos in this book have never been seen before, including rare 1970 photos of Jerry Garcia in his Larkspur home months before recording began for the group's classic album, American Beauty. Some of the photographs were taken at the homes of the artists or in their hotel rooms. The Ramones photograph was shot from the doorway of Goldberg's room at the Tropicana in L.A. Michael is here to share some stories behind the photos in the book.Purchase a copy of Jukebox: 1967-2023 Photographs ---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe
Send us a Text Message. In time for its upcoming 45th Anniversary, Memorial Day AND the recent resurgence of its Oscar-winning director screening his long-developed passion project (Megalopolis....hopefully coming out later this year), what better time to revisit a film which itself was a long-gestating passion project for Francis Ford Coppola? All of the crazy stories behind its troubled projection have seemingly been remembered as much as the film itself but make no mistake, this Vietnam/Cambodia-set war drama still packs a punch with several memorable sequences including.....one All-Timer scored to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries?" :o Martin Sheen leads a positively stacked cast including Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Laurence Fishburne, Harrison Ford, and a highly memorable turn from Marlon Brando.
