Welcome back for another episode in the "22 Lessons on Ethics and Technology Series! In this episode of the series, I speak to Dr. Eric Katz, and we take on the common utopian mythology of technology as inherently progressive, focusing specifically on the frequent slide from utopianism into terror. We talk about the uses of technology during the Holocaust and the specific ways in which scientists, architects, medical professionals, businessmen, and engineers participated in the planning and operation of the concentration and extermination camps that were the foundation of the 'final solution'. How can we think about the claims of technological progress in light of the Nazi's use of science and technology in their killing operations? And what can we learn from the Nazi past about how our commitment to a vision of technological progress can go horrifically wrong?   Dr. Eric Katz is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy in the Department of Humanities at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.  He received a B.A. in Philosophy from Yale in 1974 and a Ph.D.in Philosophy from Boston Universityin 1983.  His research focuses on environmental ethics, philosophy of technology, engineering ethics, Holocaust studies, and the synergistic connections among these fields.  He is especially known for his criticism of the policy of ecological restoration.  Dr. Katz has published over 80 articles and essays in these fields, as well as two books: Anne Frank's Tree: Nature's Confrontation with Technology, Domination, and the Holocaust (White Horse Press, 2015) and Nature as Subject: Human Obligation and Natural Community (Rowman and Littlefield, 1997), winner of the CHOICE book award for “Outstanding Academic Books for 1997.” He is the editor of Death by Design: Science, Technology, and Engineering in Nazi Germany (Pearson/Longman, 2006).  He has co-edited (with Andrew Light) the collection Environmental Pragmatism  (London: Routledge, 1996) and (with Andrew Light and David Rothenberg) the collection Beneath the Surface: Critical Essays in the Philosophy of Deep Ecology (Cambridge: MIT Press, 2000). He was the Book Review Editor of the journal Environmental Ethics from 1996-2014, and he was the founding Vice-President of the International Society for Environmental Ethics in 1990.  From 1991-2007 he was the Director of the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) program at NJIT. His current research projects involve science, technology, and environmental policy in Nazi Germany.

The COVID-19 crisis enters its third year at a crossroads in the U.S. As vaccination rates stall, calls for boosters and shots for children under five have become louder. Government will have to adjust and better prepare for potential variants and waves of the disease. A bipartisan bill to better equip the government for future pandemics is now gaining momentum in Congress and the plan would reform some federal hiring practices and boost interagency collaboration so all levels of  government won't make the same mistakes they did in early 2020 when the next pandemic hits. The Friday Mental Health Power-Hour with Scotty P and Ev, professional motivational speakers with lived mental health experiences, is a show dedicated to having meaningful conversations around mental health. Unlike many other mental health programs, The Friday Mental Health Power Hour is designed to leave the listener feeling both inspired and empowered to tackle even the largest of mental health challenges! Due to their own journeys with mental health, Scott Prendergast (aka Scotty P) and Evan Transue (aka Ev) feel it is part of their path here on earth to share what they have gone through and learned with as many people as possible. Through their show, they hope to change the societal perspectives around mental health, as well as leave you feeling like you ended the week on a great note! Your Hosts Scotty P Scott J Prendergast is a full-time inspirational speaker and mental health advocate based in Philadelphia, PA. A graduate of Temple University, Scott speaks about the importance of acknowledging mental health in society, and encourages techniques to overcome the everyday mental obstacles that hold us back in life. Scott travels across the country speaking to audiences ranging from high school students, to adults, while sharing his own story of hope and resilience in learning to overcome depression. Scott uses a practical approach of mindful strategies combined with a compassionate touch to help others validate their own feelings, and work towards moving past them. You can find out more about Scott by going to www.scottypinspiration.com. Ev Evan Transue dealt with severe mental health issues from the age of 5 until 18. Due to an unintentional lack of recognition of these problems, Evan did not receive proper treatment until 18 years old. After getting kicked out of school, sent to juvie, and spending his 18th birthday on house arrest, Evan had his “aha” moment that led him to realize he needed to change his path. After finally getting his mental health issues addressed, he knew what he had to do: share his story with others who were suffering so they never had to go through what he did. Now, Evan goes around the country speaking to middle school and high school students, as well as incoming college freshmen. Using his lived experiences, he connects with his audiences to encourage them to speak up about the mental health challenges they may be facing in silence. While Evan is aware that we might not be able to stop mental health issues overall, he does believe we do NOT need to live in a world where young people find themselves in crisis situations. America's Troubled Postal Service: Two Perspectives On How To Fix It

Midday

Almost everybody these days has a horror story about the US Postal Service. The medication that was late arriving, or which never arrived at all. The New Yorker magazines that arrive three at a time, months after their publication dates. The Christmas card, the Mother's Day card, the birthday card that arrives weeks or months after being dropped in the mail. Once the most popular institution in American society, the postal service is no longer that reliable bastion of American dependability. The mythical motto of the USPS is: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” But for most of us, the rounds of the post office are left incomplete with maddening regularity. Congress has taken note, ever since former President Donald Trump appointed a mega-donor and ally to the position of Postmaster General.Louis DeJoy has been a controversial figure for more than a year.In the run-up to the 2020 presidential election, there were howls of protest when DeJoy ordered the selective removal of high-speed mail-sorting equipment and mail drop boxes from communities across the country. Many Democrats feared those actions were part of a Trump strategy to impede mail-in voting. Mr. DeJoy countered that they were efforts to reduce Postal Service costs and improve efficiency. He has had to defend his actions repeatedly at Congressional hearings. His 10-year reform plan for the Service has met with stiff opposition. Last Friday, the full slate of governors on the Postal Board met for the first time in a decade, a meeting that included for the first time three recent appointees to the board by President Biden. To help us understand what's ailing the USPS and what's being done to fix it, we're joined today by Congressman Kweisi Mfume, who represents Maryland's 7th District. Rep. Mfume sits on the US House Committee on Oversight and Reform, which has held numerous hearings on the Postal Service. Congressman Mfume joins us on Zoom… Then, we talk with journalist Eric Katz, who has been covering the problems at the Postal Service extensively for years as senior correspondent for Government Executive, an independent news journal reporting on the federal government. Eric Katz joins us now on our digital line from Washington, DC. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is great for small farmers in Kenya, but has implications for all of us. Most animal feed out there is made from fish, which is expensive, destructive, and unsustainable. We're going to hear a little bit more about Kulisha and where it's headed, but we're also going to talk about innovation and entrepreneurship on college campuses.
