This week, it's all about the newbies! Both Orlando City and the Orlando Pride welcomed some new faces to the City Beautiful and we're here to talk about it. We started off with the news of Rodrigo Schlegel signing a new contract just one year after signing his last deal. Essentially, it potentially keeps the Argentine defender in Orlando for an additional year and he likely gets a bump in pay for services rendered. Hey, he earned it! Also on the MLS side, the Lions added two important cogs to the 2023 machine in U22 Initiative forward Romiro Enrique and box-to-box midfielder Dagur Dan Thorhallsson. While I was disappointed that “Dagur” doesn't mean “dagger” in Icelandic, his name is still pretty metal and fans can look forward to seeing the versatile player on the pitch this season. As far as Enrique is concerned, the Lions have obviously decided to go for young talent over experience in replacing departing forwards Alexandre Pato, Benji Michel, and Tesho Akindele. Moving to the Orlando Pride side, the team has a new boss. Haley Carter has the credentials as the club's new vice president of soccer operations and general manager. Now, we'll get to see how her experience translates to the position. Meanwhile, the Pride added goalkeeper Carly Nelson to replace 2022 starter Erin McLeod on the roster. And speaking of the roster, the Pride opened preseason camp and we went through all of the position groups. Finally, we looked in our mailbag and, surprisingly, it was empty. That almost never happens! We got to leave work early as a result. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 324 went down: 0:15 - The Lions continue their preseason and some new faces have been added to the mix. There's still some concern over center back depth and the fullback races have yet to be determined, but things are coming together with the first preseason scrimmage scheduled for today. 18:56 - The Pride have a new overlord and an additional goalkeeper as camp opens. We talked about the notable absences from the presason roster in addition to all of those who are on it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This week's show starts a little differently. We open with a frank discussion of the situation regarding the future of both The Mane Land and The Mane Land PawedCast. We're still trying to get answers to some questions that have to be cleared up before we can figure out our next steps. We take you through the difficult events of Friday and some of the options that we're weighing, but there are still a lot of variables in play. We encourage folks to give us their feedback by writing to us and telling us what you want out of The Mane Land and what kinds of things might entice you to subscribe to a premium tier in order to fund the new (and, hopefully, improved) independent site and podcast we would like to bring you. We don't know if that's how we'll go, but we feel it's important to gather as much information as we can before deciding on a course of action. Getting back to the stuff you come to us for, we discussed the two signings that Orlando City will reportedly finalize zoon. Multiple online sources report that reinforcements will be arriving from Argentina and Iceland in the forms of forward Ramiro Enrique and midfielder Dagur Dan Thorhallsson, respectively. Orlando City also lost a couple of players, as well as the club's academy director. Marcelo Neveleff is off to coach the Dominican Republic's national team and the Lions will have to find a replacement to head the academy. On the Orlando Pride side of things, multiple veteran players left the club this week, including the team's starting goalkeeper and central midfielder, and a key forward from last season. The club's average age dropped significantly with the departures of Erin McLeod, Gunny Jonsdottir, and Darian Jenkins, and we'll be watching to see if the club spends some Allocation Money on replacements. Speaking of Allocation Money, the dragon hoard got a little lighter this past week with a splash signing of Brazilian international forward Adriana. Marta's national team teammate brings some firepower and skill to Orlando and looks to be a great addition to the squad. Finally, we spent some time answering your questions from our mailbag, where we were asked about which new Lion we are second-most excited to see (for some reason), MLS doing away with the Allocation Order, and how we feel about dangerous pyrotechnics being wielded by possibly drunk people in the middle of a crowded granstand at a soccer game. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 323 went down: 0:15 - The State of The Mane Land PawedCast has us explaining what happened Friday with the SBNation MLS blogs (specifically, ours), where we're at now, and what we're thinking about right now in terms of the future. Whatever is coming, we'll let you know as soon as that decision has been made. 35:08 - Orlando City and the Orlando Pride have had a week when it comes to transfer news and rumors. We've got the latest on who left, who is coming, and who might be signing soon. 58:52 - Let's jump into the mailbag together! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Orlando City got smoked in Montreal like the meat they sell at the delis there. The Lions were never really in the 4-1 road loss, even when they cut the 2-0 deficit in half on Joao Moutinho's goal. The side was missing much more than center back Robin Jansson. It was lacking any kind of connectivity from back to front. As a result, the Lions attempted only two shots in the match — an even more dismal offensive output than in the home loss to New York. We break things down a bit and select our Man of the Match. We were much more pleased with Tuesday's result — a 2-1 home win over the Philadelphia Union in U.S. Open Cup action. The Lions had a lot more ability to break lines and shuttle the ball forward with Junior Urso, Andres Perea, and Alexandre Pato keeping Facundo Torres and Ercan Kara from getting too isolated. It wasn't a perfect outing. Many mistakes were made. However, it was a step in the right direction and hopefully one upon which Oscar Pareja can build. We selected our Man of the Match for the U.S. Open Cup win as well, and we were unanimous again. Two new Lions joined the team this week but only one will play in 2022. Jake Mulraney provides much-needed coverage on the wing, while future star Gaston Gonzalez will have to wait until 2023 to show us what he can do because of his unfortunate knee injury. The Orlando Pride traveled west and brought back Amanda Cromwell's first NWSL victory from Sunday's 1-0 road win at Angel City FC. Sydney Leroux's goal was just about enough and the Pride were fortunate not to pay for several misses that could have put the game out of reach before halftime. Orlando was easily the better side for the first half hour but things got a bit dicey over the last hour. When needed, Erin McLeod came up big. It's an important building block for the Pride. OCB was off for the second straight week. This week's mailbag asked about movies I haven't seen yet, how to rank the trophies from various MLS competitions, and who the Lions should want to play in the next round of the Open Cup. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. And we closed the show by giving our key match-ups and score predictions for Saturday's return to Canada as Orlando City visits Toronto FC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 294 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City had mixed results, bombing badly in MLS play and then performing well to advance in the Open Cup. 39:13 - The Pride were much better in the second week of the regular season against Angel City. 58:57 - The mailbag beckons and we have predictions for Saturday's match in Toronto. Orlando City has probably not looked as fluid and dangerous in a game and still lost as it did on Saturday night when LAFC handed the Lions a 4-2 loss at home. Things didn't go as planned and that included a chalked off opening goal by Alexandre Pato, a serious-looking injury to Antonio Carlos, some defensive lapses that allowed the visitors to score on their scarce opportunities, and some big saves down the stretch from the opposing goalkeeper. The Lions deserved to take something from the game, but — much like Spaulding Smails on Caddyshack — they'll get nothing and like it. We break down the game, the goals, and the calls, and give our Man of the Match picks. The Pride lost both matches since our last show and, while they looked good in one of them, they looked mostly bad in the other. On top of that, they're dealing with the loss of Marta for the season, the loss of goalkeeper Erin McLeod for at least a month, and a team that is still not threatening opposing goalkeepers enough. We give our thoughts on where the Pride are, how they can best use this international break, and what we are expecting as the regular season approaches. OCB finished its home stand unbeaten and followed a 2-2 draw against New York City FC II on Sunday with the Young Lions' first ever postgame shootout victory, snaring an extra point in the standings in MLS NEXT Pro's experimental system. Jack Lynn again had a direct goal involvement and is getting valuable minutes with the reserve side. He may be needed by the MLS team at some point this season, so it's good to see him being active in the attack. The USMNT lost the battle in Costa Rica but won the World Cup qualifying war, by punching a ticket to Qatar this winter. It was an uphill battle with so many key injuries, but the Yanks got to where they need to be and now find themselves in a group that they are capable of getting out of if they play to their potential. This week's mailbag was interested in finding a nickname for Ercan Kara and goal celebrations. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. And we closed the show by giving our key match-ups and score predictions for Saturday's home match against the Chicago Fire. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 289 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City fell hard at home with a final score that doesn't tell the full story. But the Lions, like any team, can't make silly mistakes against a team with as good an attack as LAFC has. 32:20 - It's hard out here for a Pride fan. A good performance and a bad performance this past week yielded the same ultimate result. Will there be reinforcements coming to bolster the squad? Dare to dream, I say. 53:42 - OCB made it two results out of two matches, the USMNT accomplished its objective, we wade into our mailbag, and our predictions and key match-ups for the Fire on Saturday. Orlando City laid an egg against the New York Red Bulls for the second time in two meetings this season. The Lions failed to convert a penalty and multiple other good chances, and allowed a late game-winner to lose at home for the first time this season. We walk through the game and pick our Man of the Match, discuss a key injury to Orlando's back line and the loan of Matheus Aias. And we talk about the players coming and going to their national teams. The Orlando Pride dropped their second straight in their worst performance of 2021 to date and hopefully that won't snowball with Marta and Ali Riley joining Alex Morgan and Erin McLeod on Olympic duty. An injury to Ali Krieger doesn't help things. We also have a new Pride defender in the fold. The USWNT swept its two-game Send-Off Series against Mexico despite Alex Morgan not finding the net. Next up for the Yanks is a trip to Japan to try to remain world champions. The Orlando City U-17 team finished its business by winning in the MLS NEXT Cup in penalties after a 0-0 draw in the final. Good job all around by the academy, but especially to the U-17s. This week's mailbag wants to know if Matheus Aias is a bust, but we don't think so and we tell you why there's no comparison here between Aias and Josue Colman. Orlando City extended its season-opening unbeaten to six matches with Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Toronto FC. The Lions were forced to beat the Reds with their captain and both starting fullbacks tied behind their backs but they were stout defensively and got a timely early goal from Tesho Akindele. They also got some great saves from Pedro Gallese. We discuss the match, Silvester van der Water’s first MLS start, another solid game for the back line, and more. We handed out our Man of the Match selections to the same guy this week. Then we discuss the suspension MLS handed down to Nani just 25 hours before the game. Who asked for it? Why was it necessary? We dissect this and can come to only one conclusion, so put on your tin foil hat before listening to this pod. We also discussed Daryl Dike’s season at Barnsley coming to an end and what’s next for the big guy before we could possibly see him back in a purple kit at Exploria Stadium. We hope he represents the USMNT proudly and has some success in his upcoming friendlies. We’re joined by Ben Cork of Once a Metro this week to find out more about Orlando City’s opponents Saturday afternoon — the New York Red Bulls. Ben tells us what’s new with the Red Bulls under their new manager, what is being done to cover for Aaron Long’s season-ending injury, and what we can expect on Saturday at Red Bull Arena. The Pride got a huge 2-1 road win at the North Carolina Courage on Saturday night, making it a six-point night for the club. Alex Morgan seems to be getting going and Sydney Leroux also found the net, while backup goalkeeper Erin McLeod turned in a standout performance while filling in for Ashlyn Harris (no injury issues there, just some fixture congestion ahead). Orlando faces its toughest challenge of the season so far tonight against Portland and then will also host Kansas City this Sunday. Morgan got another USWNT call-up but it might not affect the Pride much until the Olympics. We explain. This week’s mailbag has some snark as well as questions about Dike and van der Water. Then we get to our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City at the New York Red Bulls. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. That’s all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here’s how show No. 247 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City got its second straight 1-0 win and continued to play stingy defense. We break down the win, Nani’s suspension, and Daryl’s upcoming schedule. 39:29 - Ben Cork jumps on to give us all the intel we need on the New York Red Bulls. With no Nani to fear, he’s setting his sights on Chris Mueller. Not a bad guy to keep an eye on. 1:02:53 - The Orlando Pride win at North Carolina, the Pride’s upcoming opponents, our mailbag, and our key match-ups and predictions for a trip to Red Bull Arena. Strange things are afoot as Orlando could soon become the center of the MLS world. We discuss the hottest rumor of the week that MLS is planning to put all 26 teams in the City Beautiful for soccer matches at Disney without fans. This thing could start happening in a matter of weeks, depending on how things go, so there’s lots to talk about and many pros and cons of such a setup. We welcome back Paul Tenorio from The Athletic to discuss what this might look like when put into practice and some of the pitfalls that the league must negotiate before even attempting it. Paul also gives us his views on going to five substitutes for this season, the toll that games might take on players in this climate without much preparation time, and more. Alex Morgan became a mom right before Mother’s Day and we’re hoping that Charlie Carrasco grows up and becomes an Orlando Pride star alongside Sydney Leroux’ daughter. Pride goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris has a boo boo and new keeper Erin McLeod has arrived in Orlando. We also discuss Orlando City’s struggles in eMLS competitions and whether it means a change in personnel is necessary or if FIFA Abe is handicapped by his team. Honestly, we know so little about eSports (and care even less) but that doesn’t mean we won’t talk about it. We answer our listeners’ questions and they range from this MLS-to-Orlando rumor and whether that will negate a summer swoon by the Lions, to eMLS. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything —you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we wrapped things up with our continued discussion of our Marvel Cinematic Universe rewatch (so far). Dave and I are rewatching all of the MCU movies in order of release date, so we’re sharing our thoughts on Iron Man 2 and Thor this week. We liked both of them, although they were far from perfect, and we added them into our rankings so far. Stay safe and enjoy the show. Here’s how show No. 196 went down: 0:16 - Way too much info about our return to work and then we dive into our main topic of how, when, where, and why all of the MLS teams coming to Orlando to restart soccer in 2020. 42:16 - Paul Tenorio jumps on with us to discuss what he’s been hearing in regards to the proposed restart of MLS in Orlando, what that might mean for TV rights holders, how the entire thing will certainly be difficult (at best) to get going, and much more. 1:06:20 - Alex Morgan is a mom! We offer our congrats, try to talk about how the female body recovers from childbirth — something neither of us know much about — and then dive into our dissatisfaction with Orlando City in eMLS (although we both still think it’s dumb). 1:51:45 - Our MCU rewatch continues as we discuss Iron Man 2 and Thor. In today's episode I interview Canadian national team goalkeeper and Olympic medalist, Erin McLeod. Erin's obsession with competing in the Olympics  began at childhood in Alberta, Canada. Despite doubters, Erin was convinced it was going to happen. It did. And more. Erin has represented Canada in three World Cups, and two Olympics, earning a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She is now seen as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.  Erin's talents extend beyond the soccer field. She is a tattoo artist, the co-founder of the clothing line company Motive Collective, the creator of Motive Nation (providing content and resources for people striving more more), the wife of pro-footballer Ella Masar,  and the mother to two chihuahuas,  among many other things. Through it all, Erin has an insatiable hunger to grow, learn, evolve, and inspire.   In our conversation, Erin talks about -how her obsession with Wayne Gretzky and the Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles spurred her art career -the influence her art has on her goalkeeping -what it was like living and playing in Jakarta, Indonesia as a child during the riots -the risk scale, created by  Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, that she uses  to rate her days -her interaction with Lebron James at the Olympics -why her third ACL tear served as an opportunity to fall in love with the game again -the period-tracking app that she uses to enhance her performance on the field   And more.   Enjoy my conversation with the creative, never-ending learner Erin McLeod

The 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup kicks off a month to this very day in Edmonton (hopefully without any snow). With the eyes of the world's game focusing on Canada for a month or so, we thought we'd get you in the mood with the first of two Canadian Women's National Team special podcasts that we'll be bringing your way before the tournament kicks off. We'll be talking with a number of different aspects to the CWNT - coaches, players and fans. Kicking things off is head coach John Herdman, who talks a little bit about some of the players announced to his World Cup squad and what the thrills of playing at home will mean to him and the team. We kick off our chats with the players with our first ever CWNT "Teammates" section, as Emily Zurrer shares some insights and home truths about the team. Who has the worst dress sense? Who's the most intelligent? And who takes the longest in the shower and in front of the bathroom mirror? All this and more inside info! One name that cropped up a few times in Emily's "Teammates" section (and Karina Leblanc's which you'll hear in another episode) was midfielder Rhian Wilkinson. Now, I have to admit here, Rhian was my particular favourite player we spoke with for these two podcasts. She was great fun to chat with (not the others weren't, but we could have chatted with her for way longer than we did!) and we covered a whole host of topics including what playing a World Cup in Canada means to her, the learning process from tournaments past and whether a coaching role is in her plans after she finishes playing. Away from the playing side we find out about her podcast habits, her childhood without television and playing so many other sports, whose Panini sticker she carried around and we try and get her to write for us here at AFTN (the offer of which is still open Rhi!!). Taking a break from the players for a few minutes, we chat with one of the leading lights of the Voyageurs supporters' group of west, Curva Collective member Zachary Meisenheimer. Zach talks to us about what having the tournament here means to the fans and how they plan to support not just the CWNT but the whole tournament. One of the newest faces in the squad is Allysha Chapman. After only getting her first senior cap last October, the 26-year-old is now set to play a World Cup on home soil. We talk to Allysha about her journey, what it was like coming into such a close knit group, playing in Sweden, how hard it is to keep hold of mascots hands, her love of Maple Leafs and maple butter, and we find out who sent her an email saying "we're watching you"! A player who was touch and go to make the World Cup roster was one of our particular favourite players, Diana Matheson. The midfield dynamo talks to us about her recovery from her two injuries, the x-factor John Herdman brings to the team, what the girls learned from the 2011 World Cup and 2012 Olympic experiences, dealing with the mental pressures and advantages of playing a World Cup on home soil and her Netflix habits. And there's still time for some more jam talk, this time with Erin McLeod and Karina Leblanc, the youngest player on the squad, striker Jessie Fleming and midfielder Desiree Scott. Have a listen!
