It's been a minute since I've put out a new show, and so I thought maybe I'd let you in on what has been keeping me so busy. A couple years ago, I started working on an oral history project funded by the city- appropriately titled The Olympia Music History Project. We (myself, Mariella Luz and Kelsey Smith) have since broken off from the city into our own nonprofit organization, and I'm excited to announce that we are launching olympiamusichistory.org on New Year's Day, 2025! So let me tell you about what this is: I was a part of a team that interviewed 30 people who were doing significant things in Olympia's legendary indie music scene between 1980-2002. We spoke with folks from globally revered bands like Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney and The Gossip, as well as hometown heroes including Young Pioneers, The Noses, Fitz of Depression, even Olympia's only known ska band of that era, Engine 54. I've learned so much working on this project- and I've heard all the interviews several times, because I'm the guy who edited them. Have you ever seen that T-Shirt that says “Reading is Sexy?” That was designed by Sarah Utter, the singer and guitarist from The Bangs. Allegedly Patrick Swayze lived here at some point, but I don't know if he ever got out to any punk shows. And yeah, Nirvana was a part of our scene for a while too, I forget what happened after they moved to Seattle. And there were all these festivals- International Pop Underground Convention in 1991, The YoYo A Go Go festivals after that, Ladyfest- which became an international series- and a groundbreaking, grassroots rock opera called The Transfused. All these things happened in that 22-year window. My interview with a guy named John Foster focuses on a couple of crucial things happening, that the scene- at least in part- owes its existence. The first one is the enactment of the Green Line Policy at KAOS- that's KAOS, 89.3 FM, Olympia- a game-changing move making it against the rules to play any less than 80% independently released music. That had a huge impact on a lot of creative people that tuned in. The second is the publication of OP Magazine, a dense zine focused on independent music of every kind, and featured contributing writers like Matt Groening, Eugene Chadbourne, Jonathan Richman, on and on. This magazine was globally distributed from right here in Olympia, and served as a regularly updated encyclopedia of indie music- and where to get it. Basically, it was like a precursor to something in-between Pitchfork and Bandcamp, in the pre-internet dark ages. John Foster was at the helm for both of these endeavors, and he was one of the people I interviewed for the Olympia Music History Project, and here is our conversation, recorded in the historic Rockway-Leland building downtown.
"The many moods of the toy piano" podría ser el títiulo de nuestro onofrita episodio de hoy. Eo
SAN ONOFRE-Eugene Chadbourne interviú The Doc's second coming El Bien Nacido Que Se Dirige a Chad vuelve a pasar consulta en SAN ONOFRE. Sí, lo nuestro es crónico y terminal. ¿Contagioso? SAN ONOFRE presenta a Eugene Chadbourne Viernes 26 abril 2024; 20:00 h. 10 evros. Arcadia Bar
Careful with that blimp, Eugene Chadbourne! SAN ONOFRE presenta a Eugene Chadbourne Sábado 26 abril 2024; 20:00 h. 10 evros. Arcadia Bar
Próxima liturgia onofrita: Eugene Chadbourne (und Schoreder) Bar Arcadia.
Episode 7 is a ghost tale! The mystery of a name that was only known to paper… and a woman who wrote hundreds of Tin Pan Alley tunes in the shadow of a pseudonym. Host Katie Harman unfolds the story of composer Irene Higginbotham, and how she - along with three other legendary women of Tin Pan Alley - helped shape American popular music in the 1930s-1950s. The episode also features a portion of Katie's interview with Broadway and cabaret star Natalie Douglas, as she shares her thoughts on the influence of Irene Higginbotham. Catch their full conversation in Virtuosa Society Podcast's companion series “Between the Bio” which dives deeper into Natalie's fascinating life and career, including the challenges, triumphs and lessons learned between the highlights in her bio.
It's an episode years in the making when Mike is finally able to track down guitarist, composer, and raconteur Duck Baker. We discovered Duck through his solo recording of Herbie Nichols' tunes, but Mike finds out that Duck has collaborated with such luminaries as John Zorn, Roswell Rudd, and Eugene Chadbourne while keeping up a stream of solo and group releases and composing dozens of tunes. Don't miss this discussion from one of the only finger-style guitarists as comfortable at playing folk tunes and jazz covers as he is traveling to outer space. And be sure to visit www.duckbaker.com for more information on this artist.
I'm the Indian of the group". Just say NO to family values". Mira, eso sí lo tenemos meridianamente claro. Empero, vetusta cuña onofrita proclama: "Hay quye volver a los valores familiares". Y ansí, sucesivamente. ¿Quién tiene más discos R. Stevie Moore o Eugene Chadbourne? ¿Nos dejará hangin' on the telephone Eugenio como hizo R. Stevie Moore?
Musical storyteller Michael Hurley made his debut on Folkways records way back in 1964 and shows no signs of slowing down because there's always another story to tell. His songs have been covered by The Violent Femmes, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo and previous Low Profile guests Eugene Chadbourne and the Holy Modal Rounders. Michael's performances are few and far between these days, and interviews with him are even more rare. Without him American music would not be the same, and it was an honor to welcome this living legend to the stage.James Madea is a mutual friend of mine and Michael's, and the two of them are planning to start a new band and make a new record any day now. Madea's songwriting is spot-on: feels like you know it by the time it's done, and it really sticks. According to James, none of these songs have ever been recorded or released before this episode, so that's an exclusive to the max. Most music fans in Olympia probably know James Madea from our vinyl mecca Rainy Day Records where he obsessively curates a treasure trove of 45RPM singles, or his occasional DJ sets as Wildman James, spinning underground garage rock gems most people have never heard. He's also a founding member of the group Spider and the Webs, along with his wife Sara Pete and Bikini Kill's Tobi Vail. But Wildman James is also a gifted songwriter, with leanings toward early rock and country music, echoing the lonesome twang of artists like Townes Van Zandt, Billie Joe Shaver and Hasil Atkins.Regrettably, though somewhat predictably, I found myself with my first positive test for COVID-19 a few days before this eagerly anticipated show and could not attend. I hadn't heard these remarkable performances until the weekend of this episode's release, and I can say you're in for a real treat. The noble Jack Habegger returns as guest host on my behalf, thankfully, and makes it all work. This episode was engineered by Miles Rozatti in front of a live audience behind the historic Carnegie Library in downtown Olympia, WA on July 3, 2022. Like 90% percent of all other male musicians, guitarist Eugene Chadbourne started playing pop music hoping to get the attention of girls. Very quickly he grew bored of the conventional styles and gravitated towards avant-garde jazz. Since then Eugene has been as The Quietus aptly points out "one of the most absurdly prolific left-field musicians of all times". He has recorded at least 358 albums with everyone from Anthony Braxton to Camper van Beethoven. Aside from his prolific guitar work, Eugene also plays a broken Electric Rake , and is an author. His book Dreamory is a 1000 page collection of his tour and dream diaries, teenage and draft dodging memoirs and much more.
The sound engineer with acts like the Neville Bros, Maceo Parker, Steel Pulse, and Ani DiFranco, he’s also the owner of the House of 1000Hz studio, boasting a star-studded client list of national and regional artists. Goat’s early tenure at the experimental Music Gallery in his native Canada taught him to be ready for anything: recording the electric rake with Eugene Chadbourne, mixing Vladimir Putin singing “Blueberry Hill” at a Russian celebrity gala, and now a sit-down with the Troubled Men. Alec and Nick discuss the guitar. This episode inaugurates the “Musician's Friend” sub-series of the podcast—where an entire episode is dedicated to discuss various techniques, approaches, and cultures of and around specific instruments. Guitarists mentioned include: Pat Methany, Buckethead, Allan Holdsworth, Abraham Leonard, Shane Parish, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Sister Rossetta Tharpe, Jimi Hendrix, Taku Sugimoto, Loren Connors, Oren Ambarchi, Bill Orcutt, Eugene Chadbourne, Rhys Chatham & Glenn Branca. Opening theme music by Xander Seren (Flavortone guitar edit) Closing music by Jimi Hendrix, “Little Wing (Live)”
Alex Ward is a composer, improviser, and performing musician. His primary instruments are clarinet and guitar. He has also performed on alto sax, piano/keyboards, bass guitar, and as a vocalist. Alex's involvement in improvised music dates back to 1986, when he met the guitarist Derek Bailey. Since 2006, he has been heavily involved in both solo and collaborative composition, predominantly of instrumental music. He has been a member of many other groups including ensembles led by Eugene Chadbourne, Simon H. Fell and Duck Baker. Alex is a frequent collaborator of both Tim and Weasel Walter. In fact, Alex has toured with the both of them as a member of Weasel's Flying Lutenbachers project.
Game Theory, “Lolita Nation” with special guest Jonathan Segel This week’s guest Jonathan Segel (Camper Van Beethoven, Sparklehorse, Eugene Chadbourne…) phoned in all the way from Stockholm to discuss California power pop band Game Theory and their 1987 magnum opus “Lolita Nation”. Band founder Scott Miller may have overreached somewhat with this dense, experimental double-album, but underneath it all are jangly hooks and heady lyrics about life, regret and the loss of innocence. “It's been a decade of record stores Hordes of failing new wave careers What lengths we're going to just to find Exactly what we don't want to hear With all our well-trained ears” Support our show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH

If you want to know what Thelonious Monk, George Jones and the electric rake have in common, you need not look further than Eugene Chadbourne. He has been surprising audiences for over four decades with his alarming hybrid of free jazz and country music. He has an unfathomable catalog of collaborative and solo efforts. Musician and co-host Arrington de Dionyso joined me at the local Quality Inn to spend some quality time with the good doctor. Co-produced by Miles Rozatti, featuring bumper music by Warren Lee. Covering songs by Jimi Hendrix and the like he soon found psychedelic rock music too conventional for his tastes. He soon gravitated the avant grade world of jazz performer Anthony Braxton. Indeed it was Braxton who dissuaded Chadbourne from entering into a career in journalism. Secondly, he pushed Eugene Chadbourne into the world of music. Here it is, folks! The album so inscrutable it took us two whole episodes to unpack. No description I could attempt could possibly do the album justice, so I'll just say enjoy the show and we'll see you next week for part two! Songs in this episode: "Wonderful, Wonderful" by R. Stevie Moore, "Making it Go Away" by Eugene Chadbourne, "Landshark" by Fang, "A Big Fan of the Pigpen" by Guided By Voices, "Tiger Chain" by Deerhoof, "Venus in Furs" by The Velvet Underground, "Lifeguard of Love" by The Frogs, "Peace" by Ornette Coleman, "The Vultures Ate My Dead Ass Up" by Wesley Willis.
Guillaume Maupin (Saintonge records/ Matamore) sings songs since a very early age. Of course, humour does belong to music, and traditonnal, orginals, covers, wicked, strange songs are all part of his shows. Working solo or with other artists (Eugene Chadbourne, Beck, Lonely Kid Quentin, Mihai Iordache, Dead Western, Arrington de Dionyso, Euphorium freakestra, Portron Bros...) sharing stages with very various acts (Jeffrey Lewis, The Ex, Old Time Relijun, The Fall, René Binamé, ..) and playing around the world (Siberia, USA, UK, Kenya, France, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Romania, Poland, Czech rep,...) he loves to provoke fruitful encounters. In his now celebrated Human Jukebox project, with his bands Music for Rabbits, Tartine de Clous, his conference/concerts, or through his Film Water Music, or solo, playing in houses, concert halls, bars, cinemas, he always take the audience for a fun multinlingual ride. "While many performers on the folk scene consider themselves lucky if they can be judged decent in one style and interpret a few songs exceptionally well, this talent is expansive, with challenging conclusions, the swords of skill rattling and clashing in an enjoyable duel. Guillaume is not best at singing in English, French, or German; at being funny or deadly serious; at vocalizing or simply playing haunting, fingerpicking instrumental passages -- he is simply great at all these things" Eugene Chadbourne Songwriters Guild Live is a weekly radioshow in Amsterdam, focussed on artists who write their own songs. This week your host was Ro Halfhide.
For 42 years, Eugene Chadbourne has been wonderfully, definitely and sometimes frustratingly independent. A one-man journey into avant-garde folk and jazz, his work has touched several generations of independent musicians, from collaborations with college rockers Camper Van Beethoven, to a Sun Ra tribute where he played his own musical concoction, built with an electric guitar pick up and a garden rake.Earlier this decade, the journeyman musician released Dreamory, a massive, 1,000+ page tome that flips between memoir and dream logic, telling of his entry into music as a Beatles obsessed youth. After a reading in Brooklyn, Chadbourne and I sat down at a Williamsburg diner to discuss his career and the state of the industry, with a special cameo from collaborator and lifelong fan, Jim McHugh.

Interviews with notable New Orleans musicians - Jonathan Freilich Presents
Some people provide support. Jeff Treffinger is that sort of person, whether as proprietor and music booker at the legendary Mermaid Lounge, or as record producer, or as musician in groups such as the Geraniums and Tribe Nunzio. Perhaps he learned support from studies in architecture or, his interest in architecture came from a fundamentally supportive facet in his personality. There is a book by underground icon, Eugene Chadbourne, that so hits the nail on the head about certain pieces of real musical life in bars, that I won't even lend the book out. It has acquired a cult status on my own personal bookshelf. The title of the book is "I hate the man who runs this bar- The Survival Guide For Real Musicians" It's so correct in every way except that The Mermaid Lounge defied the pictures laid out in that book. We loved the men who ran that bar and their contribution and Jeff was one of them. There are many things that go on in the local music scene today that would not be, if it hadn't have been for the initial allowances of their mad "experiments" at the Mermaid. ("Courting" might be better word here than "allowance") Jeff was one of the bar owners, but he did a great deal more around there too. At any rate, in this near two hour interview with Jeff, he talks about his foregound and background activities that at different times have shaped the New Orleans music scene. And this is not the only direction life has taken him. Here Treffinger, founding member of Tribe Nunzio, describes how he came to be putting a band together in New Orleans at all and, what his purposes were in doing so...or at least his thinking at the time. He tells stories about the accidental discoveries that led him to architecture and how that led him into certain nooks in New Orleans music. He is frank about what he learned and how, and the interesting folks that he collaborates with or has dealt with over the years that have enabled his dealings to be loaded with a delightful, risky creativity. Part 1- Early background in New Jersey; the impact of the Beatles; the guitar; starting in bands and dreams; realities on the Jersey shore; the influence and protection of the older, tougher, musicians he got around early on-discipline, rehearsal, the intellectual component; how Treffinger came to be in New Orleans in 1977 and the allure of the city; fateful snowstorm, achitect of the architect; 1978 to Tulane; meeting Dwight Davis, flautist/Tenor sax; panhandling in the French Quarter; moving away from rock to Chick, Jaco, etc; learning further interesting things about Dwight Davis
