Josiah is joined by Jesse Goodman (@platofan402, Post-Cultural Amnesiac) to discuss 2023. Beginning with a focus on 2023 in personal media consumption, the conversation evolves into a broader discuss of the anecdotal "vibe shift," the sense of living in a hyperpolitical age, and the difficulty of talking about film or art while genocide and war unfolds in the background. Correction: I (Josiah) briefly discuss the strange Osama Bin Laden going viral on TikTok situation and suggest that we will eventually find out who is behind that. We already have. EPISODE 1913: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to new media artist Eryk Salvaggio who sifts through the debris of an AI age in which we can no longer trust anything we seeEryk Salvaggio is an interdisciplinary design researcher and new media artist. His work explores emerging technologies through a critically engaged lens, testing their mythologies and narratives against their impacts on social and cultural ecosystems. His work, which focuses on generativity and artificial intelligence, often exposes the ideologies embedded into technologies. His work has been curated into film and music festivals, gallery installations, and conferences (such as DEFCON 31 and SXSW). The work interrogates generative AI through a blend of cybernetics, visual culture & media theory, with a critique grounded in resistance and creative misuse, highlighting the gaps that emerge between the analog and digital, such as datasets and the world they claim to represent. Eryk has since worked with partners including AIxDesign's Story & Code program, the AI Village at DEFCON 31, Space10, the Australian National University, the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Wikimedia Foundation, the Internet Archive, and the National Gallery of Australia. His work has been published in academic journals such as Leonardo, Communications of the ACM, IMAGE, Patterns, and by art publishers including DAHJ Gallery, the Furtherfield gallery (London), Turbulence (Boston), Rhizome (New York) and 10th Floor Design Studios (San Francisco). His artwork has been included in pieces with the BBC4, The New York Times, ArtForum, NBC News, Neural, Dirty, and Mute Magazine. His work has been exhibited at Michigan State University Science Museum, the UN Internet Governance Forum, Eyebeam, CalArts, Brown University, Turbulence, The Internet Archive, and in books including Jon Ippolito & Joline Blais' At the Edge of Art, Alex Galloway's Protocol: How Control Exists After Decentralization, and Peter Langford's Image & Imagination. He has presented talks, keynotes and works at SXSW, DEFCON 31, the Systems Research & Design Conference (RSD10&11), the Advances in Systems Sciences and Systems Practice Conference (2022), Melbourne Design Week (2021), MIT Press (2021), the University of St. Gallen (2018), California College of the Arts (2018, 2019, 2020), the University of Maine, RightsCon (2020), and Gensler San Francisco (2017). As a Wikipedia Visiting Scholar at Brown University, he created the article on Algorithmic Bias in 2016. Eryk has taught at the Elisava Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, RIT, and Bradley Universities, and has given talks or lectures at NYU, the University of Cambridge, Aarhus, the University of Copenhagen, and Northeastern. He holds a Masters in Media and Communication from the London School of Economics and a Masters in Applied Cybernetics from the Australian National University. He earned two concurrent undergraduate degrees, in New Media and Journalism, from the University of Maine, where he was listed as visiting faculty as an undergraduate based on his early interactive, online net.art work.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.

How can you be blind and not even know it? Stephanie Duesing is an author, speaker, and international advocate for people who have CVI. In January of 2017, she discovered that her straight A honors student, genius artist, and water polo-playing son Sebastian was almost completely blind and no one knew, not even Sebastian himself. He was fifteen and just about to enroll in driver's ed. We were devastated. Terrified for her son's safety, overwhelmed with guilt at not knowing that her own son was blind, and utterly baffled at the impossibility of the situation, she embarked on a journey to find answers. Her book Eyeless Mind: A Memoir About Seeing and Being Seen is the true story of how she, an ordinary music teacher, made a major medical discovery in the field of visual neuroplasticity and the horrific medical malpractice and abuse she experienced trying to get a diagnosis for what turned out to be a common visual impairment. Her son Sebastian is the only person in the world known to process his vision verbally, which means that he sees with words like a bat sees with sound. Dr. Lotfi Merabet, the director of the Laboratory for Visual Neuroplasticity at Schepens Eye Research Institute, associate scientist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, and associate professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, published this paper on Sebastian's use of verbal mediation to process his vision in collaboration with Dr. Barry Kran, the head of optometrics at the New England Eye Low Vision Clinic at the Perkins School for the Blind.Although Sebastian's neuroplastic adaptation to his neurological visual impairment is unique, his actual condition of CVI is common and is poorly understood. Cerebral/cortical visual impairment was identified as the number one cause of visual impairment in the developed world more than ten years ago, and it still doesn't have a diagnostic code within the American medical industry. Dr. Merabet says that Eyeless Mind is "a must-read for any family facing the challenges of raising a child with any disability."It is Stephanie's mission to end the discrimination against people who have CVI. https://www.facebook.com/stephanieduesingauthor?mibextid=ZbWKwLhttps://stephanieduesing.com/Eyeless Mind https://a.co/d/9N22vvuhttps://www.nei.nih.gov/about/news-and-events/news/vision-loss-children-whose-eyesight-may-be-2020-requires-new-diagnostic-and-teaching-strategieshttps://www.optometrytimes.com/view/getting-to-the-heart-of-pediatric-vision-loss-and-blindnesshttps://cviscotland.org/https://www.perkins.org/our-work/cvi/https://www.aph.org/product/vision-and-the-brain-understanding-cerebral-visual-impairment-in-children/ Follow the podcastOnemomentpleasepodcast.comIG:@onemomentpleasepodcastFB: OneMomentPlease

Jahrhunderts etablierte.

Stephanie Duesing, parent, author, educator and advocate, talks about the devastating discovery that her straight-A, water-polo playing, artist son at age 15 was blind--and had been his entire life without anyone, including him, knowing it. Stephanie candidly talks about this discovery, and her family's harrowing journey to get her son a diagnosis and treatment for CVI (cerebral-cortical visual impairment), a common form of visual impairment. We talk about how her son navigated exceptionally through life with the love and support of his family both before and after the diagnosis. We'll dive deep into her family's experience, how there were helpers along the way, and how trusting themselves and their love for one another supported them along the way. And we talk about how stumbling into what was a devastating discovery but catapulted Stephanie into advocacy in the CVI world, and how this experience forms the basis for her book, Eyeless Mind: A Memoir about Seeing and Being Seen, a must-read for anyone who suspects a family member or friend has CVI, or for anyone who must rely on self-advocacy to get the health care they deserve. In this episode Brynn and I listen to a very rare lecture from one of the greatest philosophical and psychedelic minds of the 20th century...Aldous Huxley. Aldous talks about the different ways the visionary experience has manifested for humans throughout the centuries, and how these experiences can help us. Listen In! Aldous Huxley Bio:Aldous Leonard Huxley was born in Godalming on 26th July, 1894 in an upper scale family. He came from a literary background, his father also being a biographer, editor and poet. Huxley was educated at Eton College in Berkshire from 1908-1913. When he was just fourteen years old, his mother died. During his teenage years, he also suffered from an attack of Keratitis Punctata and thus became blind for about eighteen months, but then by wearing some special kind of glasses, he was able to recover his eye-sight a little and at least read, but consequently also learned Braille. Even though he had frequent conditions of near blindness, Huxley went on relentlessly with his studies at Balliol College in Oxford, where he received his B.A in English. He was confused whether to pursue his career as a scientist or take part in the World War. Since, he was unable to decide, he took up writing. He wrote several poems, which appeared in 1916 and the second volume, which appeared in 1920. Huxley’s novel, Crome Yellow came in 1921, which blended criticism, dialogue, wit and satire and also established Huxley as one of the most important literary authors of the decade. Within a period of 8 years, Huxley had written several books. Amongst these novels, the most notable ones are Point Counter Point published in 1928 and Do What You Will published in 1929.At this time, Huxley became involved in the study and practice of mysticism. His new philosophical outlook informed his novel Eyeless in Gaza (1936), which promoted pacifism on the eve of World War II.After Many a Summer Dies the Swan (1939) makes the case for the emptiness of materialism. Gradually, Huxley moved toward mystical writings, far from the tone of his early satire. The Perennial Philosophy(1945) and The Doors of Perception (1954) represent Huxley’s non-fictional expression of his interests, including even experimentation with psychedelic drugs. The Doors of Perception is a book by Aldous Huxley. Published in 1954, it elaborates on his psychedelic experience under the influence of mescaline in May 1953. Huxley recalls the insights he experienced, ranging from the "purely aesthetic" to "sacramental vision", and reflects on their philosophical and psychological implicationsHuxley’s last novel, Island (1962), returns to the theme of the future he once explored so memorably in Brave New World. The later novel, in which Huxley tried to create a positive vision of the future, failed to come up to readers’ expectations. Brave New World Revisited, a series of essays addressing the themes of his early novel, represents a more successful rethinking of future (and present) social challenges.Huxley died of cancer in California on November 22, 1963. The Story of Samson is a chronicle of Israel's failure to live up to their divine calling after entering the promised land. In the same way, Samson failed to live up to his divine calling. His life parallels the history of Israel in many ways. In this sermon, Pastor Eric will lay out the blindspots that led to Samson's tragic downfall.
