What happens when a woman is the primary breadwinner in a divorce? To answer this question, Kimberlee turned to divorce lawyer and certified divorce financial analyst Lisa Zeiderman. In this episode, Lisa dives into some of the realities of divorce that women may not be aware of, from spousal support to commingling assets to custody concerns for female breadwinners. She also shares practical steps any woman can take today to protect their financial future.Episode Recap: Today we're talking about divorce finance with Lisa Zeiderman (1:12) What is a female breadwinner? And they are the most difficult cases because women don't often take care of themselves in making sure that they have protected their finances. So I would say that's a huge issue. And women who are the primary breadwinners have to understand that they have to either enter into some sort of agreement — and we'll talk about that in a few minutes — but they can be responsible for child support later, they can be responsible for spousal support, and they also are going to equitably divide — in New York, some states are different but I'm a New York attorney, so I'm going to talk about New York — but they equitably divide the assets and of course the liabilities. But the fact is that many women who are the primary breadwinners wake up to a divorce and even if they started the divorce, they are shocked that they are in a situation where they are paying child support, paying spousal support, and equitably dividing those assets that maybe only they earned.” - Lisa“Don't be pennywise and pound foolish with this stuff. I know people kind of balk a little bit, they don't want to pay the money for the prenup, but think about this. Down the line, this thing could save your bacon and make your retirement and the other part of your life down the road. Because if you have a really messy divorce and things don't go according to plan, and I am the poster child for this, then this trickles down into your retirement and how long you're going to have to work, and if you happen to live to 100, how are you going to get there? Because this thing can just be an apoplectic kind of thing to your finances if it's not handled wisely. So you can definitely do your own prenups online. I know there are resources for that now, but I would say it's worth putting money towards a prenup, because this is going to be the defining document down the road if things go awry. It's worth it, because that few thousand dollars you're going to spend on a prenup could save you hundreds of thousands of dollars or even more down the line.” – Kimberlee

On episode 101 of The HR Famous Podcast, long-time HR leaders (and friends) Madeline Laurano, Jessica Lee, and Tim Sackett come together to discuss paper straws, female breadwinners, and how people react when a husband cooks more for his family than his wife. Listen below and be sure to subscribe, rate, and review (iTunes) and follow (Spotify)! :30- Starting off hot with Tim taking a stance against paper straws. He hates them and the crew agrees. 2:00 - Tim did some research to back up his anti-paper straw stance. He found out that 330 million plastic straws are used in the US everyday. 4:20 - Madeline mentions Tom Brady's crazy tirade on straws a few hours ago. She says you can see Gisele's influence . 8:00 - Tim's wife thinks the best straws are McDonald's. JLee loves Wendy's and the wide bubble tea straws. 10:30 - The BBC came out with a study about the woman in a relationship being the breadwinner. The study found that women who are the breadwinner actually do more housework. 13:45 - Madeline says that when her kids were babies, she wanted to do all the baby things and it's translated to more when her kids have gotten older. 16:00 - JLee wonders if this is self-imposed. She thinks that if a woman is in a high-stress, important job that they may have the personality traits of someone who may want things done a certain way in the household. 20:30 - Another piece of this study showed that 30% of females are the breadwinner of their household. This is a number that will continue to grow. He asks if there will ever be a time where men start to do the majority of the housework. 24:30 - Tim mentions that he comes from a family of cooks and he cooked more in the house. He said her family were beside themselves that Tim cooked for the family and his wife didn't alway have to do it. 27:15 - JLee mentioned parts of the article that discuss a conversion in a couple where a woman makes more than her male partner. She talks about her own experience with that conversation. 30:20 - Tim talks about how society is going to have to get used to stay-at-home Dads and women being the main earners for their families.

The Arduous March famine of the 1990s forced many North Korean women to engage in informal economic activity to support their families, even as the state required their husbands to continue reporting to official but unpaid jobs. The result was that many women came to be their families' primary breadwinners in a traditionally patriarchal society. […]

If you know an educator, it's likely you also are very aware of their ongoing internal tug-of-war between work-life balance and pay. E Danyall, a former adjunct professor and the primary breadwinner in her family, found a way out by creating online courses and sharing her knowledge online, instead of only in the classroom. Now, it's E's mission to help other teachers leverage their knowledge toward a successful exit from the classroom. Or at least the freedom to choose. She wants to empower educators to use their in-depth knowledge and experience to their advantage and finally earn what their expertise is worth. Whether you're still suffering at that exhausting, low-paying job; thinking about making a transition and wondering how to make the jump; or wading through the early years of entrepreneurship and trying to get your business off the ground (or have a partner doing any of these things)...E Danyall has insight for you! A few highlights: What it was like to go from being the highly-educated breadwinner with the career...to being home with much less income while she launched her online courses, including struggles with feelings of doubt, being burdensome, and fear...to becoming the entrepreneurial female breadwinner in the family. [8:41] How the “independent woman” mindset can accidentally be damaging toward the bond and the intrinsic support for each other in a relationship, and how open communication can get couples back on the same page. [14:32] What her husband said about her true value as a person, a woman, and a mother when she was feeling down about her financial contributions during the tough transition times. shutterstock In South Africa, about 6 million households have women as the breadwinners – about 38% of all homes. Many of these women don’t choose to be the primary financial provider but are forced into it by circumstances. And they are over-represented in the poorest paying and most unregulated sectors of the economy, such as service industries, domestic work and informal work. They also earn less than their male counterparts. In today’s episode of Pasha, Bianca Parry, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of South Africa, discusses her exploratory study of women breadwinners, which she undertook from a psychological perspective. She found that they felt fulfilled by their role, although it came with sacrifices and struggles. The women tended to take on a double burden of work and family responsibilities, as most were single. This meant ignoring their own needs. But society should not similarly neglect the evolution of gender roles. Can women be breadwinners? There is an assumption that women who earn more than their partners will not have one job but three: doing their actual work, taking the bigger load of the household chores and caregiving, as well as managing their partner’s easily damaged ego. In this episode Hazelle, Germaine and Azura discuss how they feel about earning more than their boyfriends and husband, and share their thoughts on women being the main breadwinners in relationships.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The gender role conversation is a hot topic that carries a lot of weight for so many men and women. As humanity evolves, the roles are evolving too and we’re no longer bound by the stereotypical conventions of male and female conditioning. We have a choice about everything. We get to choose how we live our lives and in this episode I’m going to unpack the topic of female breadwinners and debunk some of the reasons why there is so much guilt, resentment and bitterness attached to the idea. I’m going to let you in behind closed doors and get quite personal to open up the discussion of female breadwinners and why maintaining polarity in your relationship is so important. I share details of some of the conversations Jamie and I have had and the decisions we’ve made to be in a place of agreement about the roles we both play in our partnership. I dive into my personal experience growing up with a fear of being the breadwinner, how social conditioning impacted my internal script of how things should go and the mental hurdles I overcame to be in the place I am today; happy, successful, running my own business and in a supportive, loving and healthy relationship. Whether you’re the breadwinner or you’re relying on the income of your partner, this episode is for you. It’s time we stop feeling guilty for living the life we want to live. As time continues to separate us from World War II, more and more little-known information about certain United States war efforts is coming to light. Perhaps one of the more interesting centers on a U.S. program that recruited female college graduates, more than 10,000 of them, to serve as code breakers in the war effort. Through archival research and interviews with some of these code breakers, one author has written the incredible story of these women, who were ordered to never reveal the scope of their work during the war. Guest: Liza Mundy, author of Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War Two. She is also the best-selling author of two other books - The Richer Sex: How the New Majority of Female Breadwinners is Transforming Sex, Love, and Family… and Love and Family and Michele: A Biography. Mundy was a longtime reporter for the Washington Post, and has contributed to numerous publications including The Atlantic, Time, The New Republic, Slate, Mother Jones, and Politico. Its headquarters is on the K‑State campus in Manhattan.
