Episode description: Emily Layden is a writer and former high school English teacher from upstate New York. A graduate of Stanford University, her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Marie Claire, The Billfold, and Runner's World. She joins us in this episode of Peace Meal to discuss her debut novel All Girls. We explore the depiction of disordered eating and anxiety in the book and society more generally, using Emily's experience with the co-occurring concerns as context along the way. We center our conversation on one of the characters of All Girls, Macy, who struggles with clinical anxiety and an eating disorder resembling ARFID. Emily tells us about her decision to write Macy as she did, eschewing graphic descriptions of behaviors to highlight Macy's anxious thoughts instead. She describes what she hopes All Girls adds to the larger conversation about eating disorders and the adolescent females among whom eating disorders are particularly prevalent. Emphasizing the importance of taking both eating disorders and young women more seriously, we explore how society tends to think similarly of both. We cover: The relationship between anxiety, obsessive thoughts, and disordered eating/eating disorders How exercising compassion with her students became a way for Emily to exercise compassion for herself How our culture routinely dismisses or trivializes eating disorder stories and other experiences prevalent among young women How one character in All Girls, Macy, can widen our cultural understanding of eating disorders What the reader response to Macy says about changing attitudes toward eating disorders and mental illness In Emily's words: On the connection between anxiety and disordered eating: “Macy is anxious, you see in her chapter, about so many things entirely unrelated to her body or to food. But she copes with that anxiety through avoidant and restrictive behaviors.” On typical eating disorder depictions: “So often when we have a depiction of an eating disorder on TV or in literature, it tends to be this very narrow reflection of the experience.” On the parallel between society's understanding of young women and of eating disorders: “I think that there's this whole culture that says that girls are not really whole people and thinks that they are trivial or overly emotional… and I think we see a lot of that same flattening with our cultural thinking about eating disorders.” Find Emily on Instagram @emilylayden and at emilylayden.com. Emily Jones shares how the program that she developed with her husband David has blessed their lives through the development of an internal filter for their family’s use of technology. We also discuss this amazing generation of kids and the importance of inspiration in knowing how to parent and guide them.2 PEBBLES OF THE WEEK: Take some time to assess your personal use of technology. Maybe try that activity we mentioned of going to a park and watching the role technology plays in others. If you are a parent, I have an additional pebble for you. Take some time this week to think about what you are grateful for in your kids. Is it the way they make you laugh? Their determination that sometimes manifests itself as stubbornness? Is it their kindness, their go-getter attitude? Is it the way they give you a sweet hug each morning? For me, focusing on gratitude in regards to parenting has helped me to feel inspired as to how to help and support that particular child.RESOURCES:Affiliate Disclaimer - As an Amazon Associate and member of other affiliate programs, we may earn advertising or referral fees from qualifying purchases. Today, Alex and Lisa chat to Emily Syphas about sober socialising, and sober sex with lots more juicy bits in between. Emily founded Sober & Social in 2018. Sober & Social is a brand and community that supports those wanting to explore and lead a teetotal lifestyle. Their core ethos is to empower, encourage and celebrate living your healthiest and happiest life. The community was founded on the basis that going alcohol free shouldn’t mean missing out or having to compromise on your social life. Emily is passionate about changing the way society perceives the way we should drink. She thinks if less people drink alcohol we would have better mental health, less crime, more hospital beds, less days off work, feel more motivated, sleep better, make better food choices and overall, we would be kinder to each other and love each other more. Today's guest on #PoisedforExit is Emily Morgan, the founder and CEO of Delegation Solutions, which provides Virtual Assistant services to entrepreneurs. Emily grew her firm from scratch out of a need to expand the services she was already delivering, and over 13 years has built it into a 40 person team of Virtual Assistants and support staff. We entrepreneurs tend to have issues with delegating well. The content and advice from Emily will likely impact many of our listeners who struggle with how best to delegate. She says that entrepreneurs operate in a 'freedom economy', whereas employees operate in more of a 'safety economy' which are ideologies that don't always match up when an owner is trying to decide how and what to delegate. Emily says when you are deciding what and how to delegate, start by assigning tasks that are repeatable and are tied to the company's overall goals. She also says that an entrepreneur's most valuable resource is their energy; when it's depleted that's not a good thing for the owners or the company. Proper delegation plans can help alleviate burnout and keep the owners creative ideas flowing. This week on All Ears Abby talks to New York Times Magazine staff writer, Yale Law School scholar, and Slate Political Gabfest co-host Emily Bazelon on a host of legal and legislative changes on the horizon in the American judicial system. With the looming shift from Republican to Democratic control of the federal government on January 20th, the Supreme Court is on its own separate trajectory, set into motion by the addition of Amy Coney Barrett to the bench. Focusing primarily on women’s reproductive health and justice, Emily breaks down how Supreme Court could begin to dismantle the legal scaffolding around abortion rights, and how it could reverberate through states and communities. With an eye toward the Democrats’ newly-shifted but still razor-thin control of Congress, Abby and Emily game the potential outcomes and discuss what values and metaphorical baggage justices bring into a courtroom. With Emily’s smart takes and deep knowledge, this is an episode for the legal-savvy, the legal-curious, and even the legal-agnostic. Welcome back, Peeps! Today, the multi-talented and widely accomplished Emily Boge MPA, RDH, CDA joins us to tell us about her career from the beginning. Emily’s story begins on a hog farm in rural Iowa where she and her 10 siblings grew up. We follow her through her early education, where she played the sousaphone (Katrina psychically intuits this) and invented a motion-activated flycatcher called the “Fly-Vacuum”, which won her a full ride to the University of Iowa. Today, Emily Boge designs dental instruments, is a Dental Administrative Chair and is an active speaker and writer in the dental community. Her innovative spirit is apparent in her work and her drive to push skills to new limits. It is such a joy to have this lifelong academic on our show to talk about the state of dental hygienist programs and what dental school is really all about. We cover some of these topics and much more: How hard should dental courses be? What does it take to be a great dental educator? Is it worth going to dental school during the Covid-19 pandemic? How do you find time to write while working overtime? How has the pandemic affected dental programs? Emily Boge in her own words: Emily Boge, MPA, RDH, CDA is the Dental Administrative Chair at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa. In this role, she serves the Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene Program students, the faculty of the programs, and the staff of the Dental Clinic. Prior to accepting this position in July of 2015, she practiced as a full-time dental hygienist at Dental Associates of Manchester in Manchester, Iowa. In addition to working at the College, she maintains an active career completing research, product development, and evaluation of products for several major dental companies. She also enjoys speaking and writing research for professionals and facts for consumers in dentistry. She enjoys all facets of dental hygiene and dentistry and prides herself on thinking outside the box when it comes to dental innovation and practice standards; especially when she can apply new ideas to clinical techniques that improve the current standard of care. Emily designed and marketed the Boge513™ scaler, sold by American Eagle Instruments. This instrument won the 2017 Dental Excellence Award: Best New Instrument/Device. For interview #9, I am talking with Emily Krosnicki, personal stylist, shopper and organizer. I think of her like our local, style-savvy Marie Kondo. Emily makes simple, personalized changes that end up impacting so many areas of her clients lives--from career to relationships -- as people blossom with their new found confidence. I truly believe that finding your style and what makes you feel beautiful in your own skin (just as you are right now), is key to radiating vibrant energy to the world, which ultimately makes you a holistically healthier person. Emily Griffith did something inspiring. While scuba diving and surfing in Australia she came across food texture that was addictive…sprouted buckwheat. Yep we said sprouted buckwheat. But here’s the thing…instead of just loving this craving she discovered and being like most young people traveling, she didn’t just order more and more and come back and tell people how she loved the food. She started a business. A viable profitable business. She did research, met the owners at the restaurant where she discovered it, found the resources and engaged the marketing. That day in Australia, she became obsessed and walked to cafe owners and found the benefits and the created her own BRAND, her own products. When she returned from Australia to the US she found through research that a void existsed in the health-foods market. She created a brand called “Lil Bickwheats”. Her website is amazing… https://lovelilbucks.com/ (lovelilbucks.com) As a child she was captain of soccer team, dreamt of going pro but her dreams got crushed when she didn’t make varsity. So she vowed to be as good as boys in everything else and this is what inspired her to be an entrepreneur. All from a single great meal. She tasted something..she paused…and vowed to herself that she will take this back to the US from Australia and build a self-sufficient business around it…and a lasting growing brand.
