In our fast-paced society, people rely on symbols to guide their decisions. This makes propaganda a powerful force, as it streamlines information processing. Brands capitalize on our need for these cognitive shortcuts by virtue signaling to project shared values, causing consumerism to shift from an act of self-expression to one of tribalism. We discuss cognitive dissonance and societal polarization resulting from the culture war, featuring brands like Disney, Tesla, Budweiser, Dove, Nike, and more. In our fifth episode of this season of Courage My Friends, we revisit the George Brown College Labour Fair. This year, the theme of the fair is: The other P3s: pandemic, privatization, precarity,,, and planet!!  In this episode, we share the panel discussion on ‘Gig Workers and Precarity in the 21st Century.' Moderator Jon Weier is joined by panelists Simran Dhunna and Jobanjeet Kaur of the Naujawan Support Network and Jennifer Scott from Gig Workers United. The groups discusses the tribulations faced by those working in precarious and gig jobs, increasingly exploitative employment structures and organizing for the rights and dignity of vulnerable workers.   Reflecting on the meaning of exploitation for precarious workers, especially international students and immigrant workers, Kaur says: “Exploitation involves taking from workers that is rightfully ours. Wage theft, sexual harassment, inadequate job training, threats of deportation are all the forms of exploitation because they rob us of our earnings, safety and dignity.Sometimes people just take it as we are not being paid and it's just exploitation of our money or something. No, it's also the exploitation for the dignity of a worker. Because we go there professionally, work and put in the hours and everything, and it's like they take our dignity away when they refuse to pay us.” Speaking to the situation facing gig workers in Ontario, Scott says: “Gig workers are misclassified workers. And so that means that we don't have basic workers' rights and protections … because apps, you know, our bosses, are disrupting employment standards and putting downward pressure on wages, on employment standards, on working conditions, not just for gig workers, but for all workers in the delivery and logistics sector … Bill-88 was something that apps like Uber and other bad bosses lobbied quite aggressively for … because it creates a standalone piece of legislation with separate and lesser protections, which really reinforces the narrative that apps use, that gig workers are not real workers.” When it comes to organizing workers, Dhunna says: “There's the legal realm and then there's the realm in the streets. We don't rely on lawsuits or kind of the legal system to build our power, but it is a reality. It is a tool and a weapon that is used by employers just as they have done with Bill-88, and with other legal mechanisms to silence workers. And it's not something that's going to intimidate workers, of course. We're thankful for some of the support that's come from other labour organizations and publications like Briar Patch, because this is kind of the way we've begun to connect with groups … that are waging similar struggles across the country.” About our guests:  Simran Dhunna is currently studying medicine at Queen's University. She is a member of Naujawan Support Network.  Jobanjeet Kaur is a former international student who immigrated from Panjab in 2018. She was an active organizer in the Alpha College protests, and is now a member of Naujawan Support Network.   Jennifer Scott is a gig worker and the President of Gig Workers United CUPW. She began delivering on apps in 2017 as a bicycle courier. She was a member in the Justice for Foodora Couriers CUPW campaign where workers won the right to unionize with 90% of workers voting YES to their union. Throughout Season One we teased Karen for showing her trash, and we've thanked her for being "our only listener" as we sorted out mic trouble and got our sea legs with our podcast. BUT Karen, the media has made you something we never wanted you to be. It was funny when you were just an uptight gal with a weird haircut that didn't know how to be chic in public when her order was placed wrong or when your child's soccer coach kept him on the bench. It was funny when "your trash was showing". Sadly, Karen, you're out of control and in our effort to be KIND and CHIC and create a LOVING environment in our homes and in the world... we're going to have to say goodbye. We hope you get a handle on yourself girlfriend. And our apologies to our friends who are actually named Karen. We know that YOU are kind and chic. We'll always be friends.

When I met Jennifer Scott about 5 years ago, she LITERALLY changed my complete way of thinking about MINDSET.  THISSS is the woman who cracked me like a freaking walnut and truly showed me that mindset means everything.  She found a way to get me in and open the door, and I just cannot imagine where my life would be if I had I not met her and she worked with me to change my mindset. At the beginning of years so many make new resolutions and goals all focused around change.  So, what do you do If you know you want to make this change but you don’t know how to make those first steps… How do you start to make those first steps into change. The work of the playwright and screenwriter Mike Bartlett has become a staple of the theatre and television landscape with his plays, such as Bull, winning prizes, his television dramas, such as Dr Foster, tantalising viewers, and productions such as King Charles III having a life on both stage and small screen. Now he’s written a new ITV drama serial - Sticks & Stones - about workplace bullying. He joins Kirsty to discuss the dark side of office banter. Looking at art is very popular. Last year 5.9 million people visited Tate Modern, that’s more than those who went to the British Museum. But a visit to a gallery, especially to one of the blockbuster exhibitions such as Tate Britain’s William Blake show or the Leonardo da Vinci at the Louvre in Paris is not always a comfortable experience. Sometimes they are so crowded that you can’t actually see the art. We discusses this dilemma and explore how exhibitions are staged and visitors managed. Sirin Kale, who has written about being elbowed in the ribs at the William Blake exhibition sets out the difficulties and Jennifer Scott, co-curator of the ‘mindful’ Rembrandt’s Light show at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, which includes a room with just a single painting, explains changing approaches to make going to exhibitions more enjoyable. Any One Thing is an immersive theatre company with a difference. Plot and prop details of their shows are tailored to individual audience members through use of software and technology more usually used for marketing and advert personalisation. Paul Farnell and Justin Fyles, the tech entrepreneurs behind the company explain their unique blend of fringe theatre and personal data. Presenter: Kirsty Lang Producer: Hilary Dunn

In this monthly series, broadcaster and acclaimed historical novelist Sarah Dunant, delves into the past to help frame the present, bringing to life worlds that span the centuries. Taking a different modern day anxiety, hope or idea as its starting point each month, the series considers how certain questions are constant, yet also change their shape over time. This month, as waves of accusations about sexual harassment and abuse continue to swell, Sarah looks at times in history when women have spoken out about male behaviour, the demands the women made, and their struggles to effect change. From the 19th Century American housewives calling out male alcoholism to the first female MPs demanding that the 1920s establishment confront the problem of child sexual abuse, When Greeks Flew Kites uses history to inform our understanding of today's extraordinary moment. What responses do women face when they threaten male power? Can you challenge and change culture? Have you ever wished you had a mentor or life coach? Sharon Mankin is a mentor to many and one of the most incredible coaches I've ever been around. She is dedicated to her beautiful family including her precious grandkids.Sharon is a speaker, coach, and mentor from the DFW area. When she isn't loving on her people, she is helping others learn how to lead themselves and lead others well. I treasure her wisdom and you will treasure each moment of this conversation. When I was a young mom (yes, before social media took off) - I LOVED reading blogs. They made me feel seen, understood and more normal in my parenting journey. I have followed Jennifer Scott and her blog for almost 15 years. And every time she shares something, I read it and re-read it and try to absorb her wisdom. You are going to LOVE her heart for her kids, her vulnerability on where she's still growing and her obvious relationship with Jesus that oozes out of her heart. You will feel like you grabbed coffee with a best friend and mentor.Be sure to make it to the end, we discuss her “adulting” list. It's such a fantastic checklist of things we can be practically teaching our kids before they leave our nest.Be sure to listen back to Part 1 of our Empty Nester Wisdom series with Kristen Hatton and stay tuned for Part 3 with Sharon Mankin.Connect with Pardon The Mess:Christian ParentingPardon The Mess Courtney DeFeoResources from today's show:Connect with Jennifer on InstagramJennifer's Blog Jennifer's Adulting List The Christian Parenting 2023–2024 prayer journal is now available!
