The European Union Election runs Thursday to Sunday. They're held every five years across the 27-member bloc. This year marks the 10th parliamentary election since the first polls in 1979, and the first after Brexit. The vote takes place from 6-9 June. Initial results can only be revealed on the evening of 9 June, once polling stations have closed in all member states. UK Correspondent Gavin Grey told Heathe du Plessis-Allan “It's the second-biggest democratic election in the world, after India.” Grey said “We are expecting this result to come in favour of potentially far-right partes – in France Belgium and Italy.” LISTEN ABOVE. Husband Bill and I invited my son Cary and his partner Zhanna on a travels through the major European World War battlefields, in Belgium and France, ending 10 days later in Paris -- a road trip of charm and history.First, we hear tips on road tripping, then we describe our trip. Right away we missed The Compiègne Wagon, the train carriage in which both the Armistices of both World Wars were signed. We also misdirected the GPS and wound up back at the airport! But we visited pretty Laon, and then drove up to Lille, “Capital des Flandre." -- Next day, to Ypres in western Belgium. The Great War Museum in a former medieval cloth factory near the cathedral gives perspective. We followed the now serene battlefield circuit, once scenes of bloody warfare. At Ypres we attended the Last Post Ceremony, held every evening at the Menin Gate. -- In Bruges, fairy-tale city in northwest Belgium, we stayed for dinner when crowds thinned. Next day to Amiens, in France. Nearby, the Battle of the Somme in 1916, was one of the largest of World War I, among the bloodiest in history. In Peronne, an excellent Museum of the Great War illustrated nearby battles. -- In Rouen, where Joan D’Arc was burned at the stake, we lunched across the street at La Couronne, oldest inn in France, where Julia Child had her first French meal.-- We strolled Honfleur harbor then drove to Bayeaux, near the Channel coast, famed for the 11th-century tapestry depicting the 1066 Norman invasion of England.-- We spent a day experiencing the more recent invasion: moving sites of Omaha Beach, the American cemetery, the war museum, and surrounding gun batteries and remnants of D-Day.-- We arrived at our favorite hotel after a crazy drive, and ended the trip in Paris. -- And Cary adds a beautiful, meaningful, final memory!_____Cary Lane is a professor, author, artist, museum curator and history buff._____Lea Lane blogs at forbes.com, has traveled to over 100 countries, written nine books, including Places I Remember, and contributed to guidebooks. Rahul Puri and Samar Khan discuss once again the vagaries of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2018. Speaking from London, Rahul reflects upon how the underdogs have broken into the quarter-finals in this edition of the World Cup after vanquishing their stronger opponents through extraordinary football and athletic grit. He thinks that even though the big players are expected to make it into the advanced stages, “it is the other side of the draw that I think has got a lot of the mystery about it.” Samar observes that World Cups differ because they demonstrate “defensive mindsets” across teams: “There is not the attacking, free-flowing football that we’re used to seeing -- the kind of football people pay to see. Teams are actually slugging it out.” Rahul says that even though that might be true for the first two rounds of the group stage, he points out that “the second round has been full of goals, I think the last stages of the group stage was also full of goals.” The two discuss questions surrounding the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) again with Rahul confronting Samar’s criticism that the technology is obstructive to the flow of the game. He argues that it has affected teams, who no longer get away with foul play. However, he says, “My only problem with VAR is: what about the times when it doesn’t seem like a very consistent system?”The big players are discussed at length in the podcast with the duo remarking how each of them can clinch the much-coveted trophy. “If I was a betting man,” Rahul says “I’d probably put my semi-finals as France-Belgium and Croatia-England. And I’m looking at France-England final.” “Well, I am a betting man, so that’s where the money is,” Samar shoots back. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

M. Hack est tombé sur les dossiers du Corps expéditionnaire canadien dès qu’il a commencé à travailler à BAC. Cette découverte l’a incité à retracer les pas de ses arrière-grands-pères en Europe du Nord. Listen to his audio diary from the trip, as well as our pre- and post-trip interviews with him.
In this episode we talk about pricing and more generically about market testing. I know, I know, marketing is probably not every coders favorite subject. I bring it up as I’ve noticed many apps in the marketplace that are underpriced. Apps that are cool, differentiated or do something of great value to the consumer can clearly support higher price points. No user is ever going to ask you to charge them more for your app so the task of picking the right price point falls on you. The easiest way to do that is to do market testing aka A/B testing (or split testing, bucket testing etc). In this episode I refer specifically to price testing for paid apps but this technique could easily be used to test for other things that might increase revenue in paid apps or downloads in free apps. All sorts of things like categories, descriptions, keywords, or artwork can be affect the performance of your app and so could be optimized. As I mentioned above, from what I’ve seen in the marketplace many developers will underprice their apps. They seem to be optimizing for number of downloads. That is indeed what you want for free or ad-supported apps but for paid apps you probably want to optimize for revenue and that formula is a simple one everyone knows: revenue = paid downloads x price. If you optimize for downloads then likely you are in a race to the bottom; i.e. how fast you can get to the $0.99 price point.Since you have 2 variables to optimize and only one which you have any control over, the easiest way to optimize for revenue is to test different price points and watch the number of paid downloads at each point. Obviously if you want to maximize revenue then you want to get the highest price possible for your app. To do that start at a high price. Over time you may need to drop the price (e.g. for competitive reasons or for sales or promotional events). So the obvious question is: how do I do market testing on the Windows Phone marketplace? Since you cannot vary pricing by market in the marketplace the way I recommend is to submit the same app with the same metadata twice. You would do that to two different markets that have very similar buying behavior. Examples of markets that have similar buying behavior are US/Canada, France/Belgium, Germany/Austria, or Australia/New Zealand. By doing this you can do your A/B testing; i.e. by maintaining all things equal except for pricing then you can figure out what price the market will bear for your app. Let me know what you think about this episode of Top Ranked. If you have questions about any of the videos, about problems or issues you’re hitting or if you have topics that you think would be of interest to other devs on the Windows Phone platform then drop me a note. I’d be particularly interested in hearing about some of the best practices you’ve adopted that you think have raised your quality or your ratings/ranking in the Marketplace. I’ll be sure to give full credit and link love whenever I can.The Top Ranked series is hosted on Channel 9. You can view all the past videos there.
