We've got a real quick interview with musical great Derek Trucks, called one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. This interview from the archives goes back to 2006, and we've been itching to get this out into the world. This interview was recorded on the Derek Trucks Band tour bus prior to one of their concerts at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia. Derek's fame was just beginning to grow. Derek Trucks began playing music as a child, and by age 11 was performing for money. Even before his 20th birthday he'd already played with Buddy Guy, Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, Joe Walsh. He founded the Derek Trucks Band in 1994 which continued on for around 16 years. Derek Trucks officially joined the Allman Brothers Band in 1999, people were really starting to notice. Along with Susan Tedeschi, Derek's wife, he formed the band Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010. What the Tedeschi Trucks Band accomplished in the studio and in live performances is beyond impressive. Ahhhh! Oh yeah folks, the Tedeschi Trucks Band is a headlining act in the 2023 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Yes, sir.    I’m a guy and guys have lots of different things about them that make them unique. There is one universal thing most guys have in common, though, and that is a deep love and appreciation for the comic form known as Bathroom Humor. There are occasionally women I’ll run into who understand the genius of this art form and my wife is not one of them. I will mention a lady a little later on who would go toe to toe with any man or boy when it comes to the intricacies of the humble fart, but for now, I have a story to tell that I teased several episodes back. You see, there is no better bathroom humor than humor that actually begins in a bathroom, so now I shall regale you with the time I peed on my leg. I’m Michael Blackston and this is Funny Messy Life. ____________________      It starts with The Statler Brothers. Growing up in the 1980s with parents and family who favored country music, my wife fell in love with the tight harmonies of The Statlers. She didn’t force their music on me when we started dating because she thought most people who liked them were already taking Metamucil everyday and getting letters from the likes of AARP and Back In The Day Weekly. She didn’t realize that I also like sweet, sweet harmonies, super high tenors, and basses so deep you can feel it in your pants. After a while, she found this out and we spent many hours in the car listening to them.    You can imagine the glee on Kayla’s face when I told her I’d gotten us box seats to see the Statlers at the Georgia Theatre in Athens - you guessed it … Georgia - for something we were celebrating, Probably her birthday, our anniversary, or maybe in those days, the fact that we hadn’t gotten a collection call about a late bill that week, which would make it seem frivolous to buy concert tickets if that were the case. Nevertheless, she was overjoyed at the prospect of hearing those pants punching bass lines live.    The night of the concert arrived and my bride and I put on our nice clothes - we call them our Go To Church clothes in the south - because we had box seats and we didn’t want the hoity-toity people around us to be able to tell we were driving a car the finance company was chasing us to repossess.    Oh look, Rupert. It appears we have the dregs of humanity in our amidst. Shall I fan their stink in the other direction?    Oh, do, Bedilia. I simply can’t fathom the thought of breathing the same air.  Fa Fa Fa Fa!    Church clothes it was with a touch of haughtiness to boot - xomething my grandma would have  called Puttin’ on airs. Kayla wore a dress and I wore a button down shirt - freshly pressed - and light tan slacks. My hair was parted perfectly and since Kayla had long locks back then, I assume they blew beautifully in the breeze around her face like the golden halo of an angel. (Actually, her hair is more reddish brown than golden, but I’m painting a mentsal picture here.)   We got to our seats and tried our best to look like we belonged in the same room with Rupert and Bedilia. We even secretly sniffed our armpits to make sure we didn’t stink. Then we sniffed each other’s armpits to make sure we were right the first time and before long the concert started.    I don’t remember who the opening act was, but I do recall she was fantastic. Her show lasted about thirty minutes before the Statlers came out and between the sets,  the crew had to switch the stage for the main event. They gave us a fifteen minute intermission while they did that, so every person in the building decided at once to take the opportunity to go to the restroom.    Bedilia my dear, I believe we should retire to the loo, don’t you think?    Oh I do, Rupert I simply doooooooo!    Kayla and I went too and normally, as you probably already know, Kayla takes longer getting back because the line to the ladies restroom is backed up like a Soviet cold war era line for … well … toilet paper. But that night, she made it back first because I had myself a delay. The men’s facility was packed and all the urinals were taken. Thank God because I got into a stall and what happened next wouldn’t have been fun in a crowd.    I assumed the position over the bowl - yes, I lifted the lid - and unzipped my pants. I had to go pretty bad and I was closed off from the public, so there were no bladder freeze issues, and I let ‘er rip. It was all good for a few seconds until I realized that I could feel a distinct pressure on the front of my left pant leg, like the caress of a gentle spring rain. I casually looked down and saw what was happening.    It wasn’t a gently spring rain.    Somehow, the stream of my pee was divided into two. One stream found its rightful place in the direct center of the porcelain bowl, while the other stream seemed to hit some invisible wall and bounce back onto my pants leg, creating a track about two and a half inches wide from mid-thigh all the way down to my ankle. I mentioned I was wearing light tan slacks. Do you know what happens to light tan slacks when they meet a two and a half inch wide stream of pee? They make a dark patch from mid-thigh all the way down to your ankle.    I didn’t know what to do. I performed some sort of emergency jiggle and reincorporated the two streams into the toilet, but the damage had already been done. I had to make a plan.    First, I would wait until I was sure everyone was out of the bathroom. I’d probably have to miss the first part of the concert, but that was okay because they’d turn down the lights and I’d be less conspicuous.    Second, I would frantically soak paper towels in water and try to scrub as much of the pee out of my pants as possible. This would make the track on my pants infinitely worse, but at least I wouldn’t stink and be the butt of Rupert and Bedilia’s jokes.    Last, I would hold my leg up to the blow dryer on the wall and hopefully no one would be the wiser.    That was the plan.    Here’s what actually happened.    It took forever for the bathroom to empty out. There was a dude in the other stall who must’ve had rotten tacos right before the show. After he finally left, I leaned down to peek under the bottom of the stall and make sure I was alone. By then, the pee track had gone cold and I had that wet clothes feeling down my leg, which made me walk, when I left the stall, like all the blood had gone out of my leg as I tried to minimize the contact with my skin.    When I got to the sink, I found that there were no paper towels. I considered soaking some toilet paper with water to scrub out the pee, but we’ve all seen what happens to TP when it gets wet, so that was a no go. I had no choice but to try and use the dryer on the wall and hope I didn’t smell.    It seems an easy thing to do to lift your leg up to those dryers when you plan it in your head, but in reality, you’d have to be either extremely tall, extremely agile, or fast enough jumping up and down so that more hot air than not gets to the spot on your pants.    My only option was the jumping and I’m not that fast. I tried it and I knew right away that it was an exercise in futility. It was over. I had to make my way back to the seat as cleverly as I could so as few people as possible saw the art running down my leg.    I left the bathroom, still doing that floppy leg walk because I hate the feeling of wet clothes on my skin, but I added the spectacle of trying to keep as much of my thighs together as I could to hide the spot.    I hobbled like Egor all the way back to my seat and Kayla looked at me concerned.    “What took you so long?”    I told her the story and ended it with a final declaration. “I’m pissed off.”    Of course, my adoring wife couldn’t pass up the opportunity to reply. She said, “Sounds to me like you’re pissed ON.”    I could have sworn over behind me I heard, “FA FA FA FA FA FA!”    It wasn’t funny when it happened, but now I look back on it as one of my favorite stories to tell when I want people to give me that face that asks, What’s wrong with you?    Which brings me to the lady I know who appreciates that kind of humor. Her name’s Kelley and she’s a dear friend. I’ve done several theatre shows with her and even mentioned this once before in a story called, The Stuff Wings Are Made Of, but it’s worth mentioned again.    Just before were were to go on stage  - I mean right before we were about to go on - I whispered into Kelley’s ear, “Hey … did I ever tell you about the time I peed on my leg?”    She died laughing and it’s been a running joke between us ever since.

We interview special guest country singer Eric DoddAbout Eric Dodd:Eric Dodd grew up in Lake Oconee, Ga. chasing two things: golf balls and guitar. He had a passion and natural gift for both. He earned a golf scholarship to Georgia College and State University, where he majored in business. When he wasn’t playing in golf tournaments, he was playing in frat houses with his band. He eventually transferred to the University of Georgia to pursue a music business degree and immerse himself in the fertile Athens music scene (R.E.M, Drive-By Truckers). But in the end, it was lyrics over links that brought him to Music City. Dodd first gained national attention as a CMT Discovery Artist, but he honed his craft playing more than 200 dates a year throughout the southeast performing in clubs, SEC colleges, and music halls where his likable personality, feel-good lyrics, musicianship, and energetic stage presence earned him a faithful following in a region with strong musical tastes and a deep pool of talent. “I always aim for my shows to be engaging,” he explained of the years spent playing gigs and sleeping in a van to make ends meet. “Music is an escape from reality, and I want to give people that and take them on a trip during the hour I get with them.” He’s opened for Sam Hunt, Old Dominion, Jake Owen, Corey Smith, Cole Swindell, Zac Brown Band, and recently for Sister Hazel, which was especially meaningful. “Opening up for Sister Hazel's sold out show at the Georgia Theatre in Athens (Georgia) has to be one of my favorite moments onstage,” Dodd offered. “I earned my music business degree from UGA so it was one of those full circle moments.”His musical journey has him weaving seamlessly between rock, country, and Americana with themes that speak to the heart of Friday night, as well as Monday morning. As a songwriter, he can be sweetly nostalgic and equally rambunctious. On “The Reason,” the debut single from his upcoming self-titled EP, Dodd sings with equal parts ache and authenticity. Inspired by the example of his grandparents, Dodd writes about love and relationships with a heightened level of sincerity, respect, and honesty. “That’s the type of love that lasts and inspires me,” he says with full candor. “There are ups and downs of course, but that is the love that endures and sets the bar for every generation that follows. It’s something I want to live up to in my own marriage.” He’s a romantic with a wild side. Dodd also sang and co-wrote the theme song for “Wild Outdoors,” the longest running series on The Sportsman’s Channel. Dodd has also leant his talent to the Georgia Music Foundation, which supports cultural enrichment and music education programs in the state. Since arriving in Nashville, Dodd has assembled an outstanding group of industry veterans and business leaders to help him reach his career goals including management and label services with Jeffrey Gaccione at Gasworks Entertainment and an exclusive physical and digital distribution deal with The Orchard. Dodd is also a songwriter at MV2 Entertainment, which has a roster of No. 1 hit songwriters including Terry McBride, Clay Mills, and another Georgia native, Thomas Archer. “Whether it's writing songs or playing shows, it's all about getting to the people and keeping in touch with them," said Dodd.

"It was only Morgan (Rose, drums) and John (Connoly, guitar)... there wasn't a band yet", recalled Sevendust vocalist Lajon Witherspoon of his first introduction to what were to become his bandmates for the next 25 years. "They came to a bar I was working at - and this is a true story - and it was Morgan, John and Vinnie (Vince Hornsby, bass) and John had never played guitar, he was a drummer, he never even had a guitar strap! (laughs) They said man, we really love what you do and I used to always go and see those guys jam - except for John, he was in Piece Dogs and played drums for them. They were signed to Energy Records so I was already impressed with him, he was a signed artist already, but he never played guitar so that was a little bit weird (laughs). It was great and Vinnie and Morgan were in the band Snake Nation and they almost got signed by RCA records but the A & R guys signed Dave Matthews instead - which I think was a great move for him (laughs). So these guys showed up in a spot I was working at and I was playing on a Monday night in a little band I had and they said they'd really like to get together and to come down to the rehearsal place but it wasn't a band. It was just us jamming and that's what started it. That's what started the seed of Sevendust right there, in that room and we wrote 'Black' and we wrote a song called 'Crazy' and we were so excited about this little band that we had that we went out to a local bar and we just jammed and everyone showed up because they knew us from previous bands and we only played those two songs and they asked us to get up there again so we played the same two again (laughs). We rocked it, man, so it was like, we have to put a band together and that's what we did; that's where it started".Rising from the Atlanta music scene in 1994, Sevendust garnered their reputation the old fashioned way through relentless touring and taking their music to the masses. So much so that Witherspoon jokes that fans in their hometown weren't sure whether or not the band had fulfilled their dream or merely faded into the shadows of many others that had followed the same path."We were just on the scene in Atlanta", he laughed. "That was the only place we ever played and then we got a record deal and I remember leaving from the Midtown Music Festival and we never went back to Atlanta for a year or two because we were on the road. It was like we got thrown from our home scene to the world. It was like wow, we've left Atlanta and never went back. I don't think they ever realised what we were doing out there on the road because we'd been gone so long (laughs). We'd really been working and paying dues - and we still are - but we went out there in a van and toured the world and went from a van to several vans to several R.V's! One time I remember the bus pulling up and we all said wow, all our rock and roll dreams have come true but in reality, the nightmare had just begun. We didn't know that yet but (laughs). It's been an incredible journey. We started in Atlanta with bands like Sunk Mojo, and The Black Crowes were coming out of there but we weren't really that big yet. We were growing. We knew that we had a good thing going on and once we hit the road it kind of hit man and we just never stopped"!Sevendust released their self-titled debut in 1997 and while it is widely respected now hardly set the music world on fire then, selling poorly in its first week. Rather than let that dampen the young band's spirits, Witherspoon says that the members were largely oblivious to the fact it had failed to ignite."No way, no way"! he reiterated when pressed if it was an issue. "Not for me. I was 21 years old, I had a record deal, we didn't care about the numbers. I don't even... not even today. It's still just an honour to be relevant in the music business when it's so crazy and you can be here one minute and then you're gone so for me it's that same feeling of I'm still here, you know? I really didn't look at the numbers back then. I don't care about them. I just felt wow, we're signed, we're touring the world and going to places we've never been before and people were singing our songs back to us! We were on Ozzfest all of a sudden with Ozzy and Lemmy from Motorhead was my buddy. That was what I was thinking about back then and getting back in the studio and making another album. Back then we didn't care about what was going on in the business, we just cared about the art".In 2004 Sevendust put out what was at the time a groundbreaking release from a metal band. They recorded and packaged a live DVD/CD set named Southside Double Wide: Acoustic Live from a show recorded at the Georgia Theatre in Athens. It was ambitious, innovative, and risky, showcasing a softer side to the band and their music that ran the risk of alienating their diehard metal fans. It was a sign of a band at the peak of their powers, unafraid to bare their musical soul, and was to become a worldwide hit with both hardcore fans and those seeking something a little fresh and adventurous."That's something we come back to from time to time", Witherspoon shrugged. "A lot of the time a song starts with an acoustic guitar when jamming and it was really cool to show people we could be under the microscope and jam and still bring the same energy to the acoustic set that we bring to the live set. That was something that we captured then and something we capture now whenever we break out the acoustic. We did another acoustic album years later, but it's something that we feel is important. Especially for me, because doing this allows me to showcase more of my vocal ability and to sing more and not necessarily sing over the guitars and the loudness. It brings it down. We're still doing a heavy song but you can hear it (laughs)".That same year original guitarist and backing vocalist Clint Lowery left the band to play with his brother Corey in Dark New Day. Although the split was amicable and Lowery was to return four years later, Witherspoon admits that musically the adjustment was difficult."That was a weird period for us", he reflected, "because that's our brother and for me, I loved writing with Clint but for us, I think... we continued. It was something that made us work harder and we had our brother Sonny Mayo from Snot there for a while and it was a great opportunity for us all and for him too and it was a pleasure to play with him but like anything I think when you leave home sometimes you've gotta come back and I felt that was what happened. When Clint came back to the band for me it was the missing link that we needed back, even though we didn't stop. For me, this band is the original band. The guys that started it and are still here. There's a certain air about it when we're all together in a room writing music that is like no other".One of the strengths of Sevendust, particularly in the live arena, is the passion and emotion exuded by their enigmatic frontman. Witherspoon not only gives voice to the songs that have nurtured Sevendust, but he also feels them. It is not uncommon for him to be seen on the brink of tears during their performance, unashamed to let the essence of the music shine through in his actions."Oh man, it gets emotional just thinking about it when you ask me the question", he managed, obviously choking up at the thought. "It's my serenity. When I'm on stage it's a place where I go and feel from the soul. I feel the energy from the people and I get emotional because I can look out and there can be one person in the crowd that is looking at me and I can see the effect and what's going on and maybe it's even something going on in their lives. You can feel that pain or that energy. It goes both ways, any time. You never know what can spark emotions and it's a rollercoaster ride of happy, sad, exciting - it's every emotion that you can possibly feel and fit in your body on that stage for me and I love it every time I go on it".Sevendust return to Australia this April on the back of last years album All I See Is War, an album which many critics believe harks back in sound to the early days of the band."It's crazy", Witherspoon enthused, "because the first thing the producer said when he came in was listen, you guys don't need any help so let me know if I can do anything and it was just like he was policing things. He said I want you guys to just be Sevendust. Let's go back to the old sound. Let's not get crazy and that's what we were able to do with him. I guess with any artist you want to grow and expand but it wasn't hard for us just to be Sevendust and I think we were able to - not on all of the tracks - but on some of the songs we got that old feel back and it was really cool to do that". It is not uncommon for fans - especially those from the beginning - to demand each new album has some sort of throwback to earlier releases, but Witherspoon agrees that what gets lost in the cries is the fact that it is not quite so easy to replicate a period and feel that was captured in a time when innocence was the best virtue of their chosen artist."It's not easy at all", he shook his head. "You want to evolve and you want things to... especially as an artist you're your own worst critic and you definitely don't want to keep doing things the same. I've always felt that Sevendust is Sevendust and we've never really gotten away from that Sevendust sound. On this album we were able to get back to a more... familiar side of it".Kris Peters
