Sarah Blatchford has had to do a lot of hard things. She navigated a terrifying infection that had her daughter in hospital for a week just as she was returning to paid work, which set her on a path of postpartum anxiety. She and her family to moved to the tiny UK island of Guernsey to care for and spend time with her father in law who was dying from motor neurone disease, and during what would be a complex journey trying to conceive her second baby, she navigated the unique challenge and experience of terminating for medical reasons. In amongst it, a colleague innocently congratulated her for the pregnancy she no longer held. She had to pick out a tiny urn for the baby she'd never get to know. And, she had to leave a workplace she could no longer face. But, as always, there's been beauty among the pain. There's been joy and love and creativity and welcoming another living baby, too. There's been delighting in the newborn phase and creating art and all the good stuff. And some tales don't deserve my over explaining. Instead, they're better told from the person who's lived to tell them. So I'll let Sarah do that.---This episode of Witching Hour is brought to you by ergoPouch. This blog post will break down the key insights from the episode, providing detailed, actionable advice for both seasoned gardeners and those new to the hobby. Links to all products mentioned. Germie seed starter trays Rubber seed starter trays Plug plant trainer Garden centre vouchers Autopot watering systems Vegepod Qwick hose Wormery Leon wellie boots Ryobi uk tools Root trainers Fiskers loppers Gift Ideas for Gardeners 1. Quality Over Quantity Richard emphasizes the importance of selecting high-quality gardening tools and products. He shares his personal experiences with various items, highlighting their durability and effectiveness. Welly Boots: Richard recommends investing in a good pair of welly boots. He owns both a shorter pair for gardening and dog walking, and a longer pair for more extensive outdoor work. Despite their lightweight design, these boots have proven to be durable and reliable. Fiskars Loppers: For pruning and cutting tasks, Richard praises his Fiskars loppers. These tools are essential for maintaining a garden, especially during pruning season. He suggests considering an additional pair for future use. 2. Seed Starter Kits Starting seeds early can lead to better yields, and Richard introduces the Germy Seed Starter Kit as a valuable tool for this purpose. Durability and Reusability: These kits are made of durable, reusable plastic trays that can be easily cleaned and used season after season. Versatility: Available in small, medium, and large sizes, these trays can accommodate various seed types. The small version can hold up to 41 plug plants, making it ideal for those with limited space. 3. Gift Vouchers from Garden Centers Gift vouchers allow gardeners to choose their own supplies, ensuring they get exactly what they need. Rocket Gro Compost: Richard shares his positive experiences with Rocket Gro compost, noting its consistent quality and suitability for various gardening needs. A gift card to a garden center that stocks this compost can be a practical and appreciated gift. Gardening Activities and Tips 1. Sowing Chili Seeds Richard loves growing chilies and finds that starting them early in the season leads to better yields. He advises against purchasing overpriced gift packs of chili seeds and instead recommends buying seeds separately from reputable suppliers. 2. Efficient Watering Systems Richard discusses the Auto Pot Growing System, which he finds invaluable for watering plants efficiently. How It Works: The system automates watering, ensuring plants receive the right amount of water without the need for constant monitoring. Winter Storage: Richard mentions that he packs the system away for the winter to prevent damage from freezing temperatures. He is excited to use a new four-pot system gifted by his wife in the upcoming growing season. 3. Year-Round Growing with Veggie Pods Veggie Pods allow for year-round growing, and Richard shares his experience with a new hose connector system from Quick Hose. Ease of Use: The connectors make watering much easier and more efficient, preventing hoses from popping off during use. Reliability: Richard appreciates the reliability of these connectors, which have made a significant difference in his gardening routine. 4. Composting with a Wormery A wormery is a fantastic source of liquid fertilizer and worm castings. Richard explains how he insulates his wormery during winter to protect the worms from freezing temperatures, ensuring he can continue to utilize kitchen waste for composting. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: New: Donation Gift Vouchers (Spendengutscheine) by Effektiv Spenden, published by tilboy on November 25, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Hi all! I am happy to announce that we are introducing donation gift vouchers (German: Spendengutscheine) at Effektiv Spenden for this giving season! It's a great way to get friends and family thinking about Effective Giving - because the voucher recipient decides which of our recommended charities the donation will go to! The vouchers work like this: You buy a voucher via our website: https://effektiv-spenden.org/spendengutschein/ (The page is in german, but you can toggle the linked form to english.) After completing payment, you receive a voucher code by email and forward it to the recipient. The recipient redeems it via our website and gets to choose which of our recommended charities the donation will go to. Main goals Effective Giving Promotion: The vouchers can help introduce and discuss the principles of Effective Giving with family and friends. Corporate Engagement: We also offer voucher purchase in bulk for organizations that want to send out gifts to their employees, clients, or business partners. See https://effektiv-spenden.org/spendengutschein-unternehmen/ Tax Deductibility in Germany and Switzerland: From a tax perspective the donation comes from the voucher buyer, so German and Swiss nationals benefit from the tax deductibility of voucher purchases like with regular donations. (If you reside in a different country this might not be possible.) Feedback If you have any bug reports, questions, or feedback about the product, let me know in the comments or via tilman.masur@effektiv-spenden.org. Happy giving! Tilman Thanks for listening. So why is it that your iPhone battery dies in cold weather? If your phone's level of warmth drops below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) or gets above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) its function is likely to fail. Use a High-Tech Thermal Protection Case in winter months. It will help maintain the temperature of your mobile phone in hot or cold weather. Keep your phone in an internal pocket so it can maintain a constant temperature from your natural body warmth. Try not to take many photos or record videos in extremely low temperatures. These are battery-draining activities that exacerbate the drain in cold weather. Use an external charger to give your mobile phone battery a boost when it needs it. Also helpful when it's extra cold just in case your phone unexpectedly dies on you mid-day. Periods. They're painful, annoying, a blessing and a curse, all in one. But what if we've been looking at them all wrong. What if the shame and mostly bad reputation that we've given our periods has been working against us the whole time. Our guest today, Lucy Peach is a period preacher, author, folk singer and sexual health educator and she believes that if we learn what really happens to our body throughout our cycles we will live a more fulfilling life. She's here to help us feel a little less guilty about those times when you just can't be f**ked or have just had it with everyone. Chrissy Flanagan spent a large portion of her young adult life searching for a purpose. She tried what seems like every hobby imaginable, knitting, flamenco, did some travelling, practised the ukulele and just nothing stuck. Until Chrissy found sausage making. As Chrissy got better and better at making sausages she realised there was a gap in the market for quality snags made from good cuts of meat. In 2013 Instagram looked nothing like it does now. People were sharing super saturated photos of their dogs, their feet and what they were eating at their local cafe. But no one was using Instagram to market their business. Jess Hatzis-Walker and her co-founders knew that consumers were ready for a social first business model, so they gave it their best shot and launched Frank Body, a honest coffee with a cheeky voice. Soon enough Aussies everywhere were posing nude, or in a robe covered in this magic coffee scrub. It was the thing everyone wanted to get their hands on. Almost a decade on and Frank Body have over 800K on Instagram, they ship products to over 150 countries and sell one bag of scrub every minute. So how did Jess and her co-founders know that such a distinctive marketing strategy would work? And did she ever anticipate this level of success? Zara Seidler was scrolling on her phone when she started receiving several very similar messages from friends. Someone she knew of, Sam, but had never met was looking to start a news platform for young people. This was right up Zara's alley. So she messaged him, they went for coffee and they hit it off. And the very next day, they started the Daily Aus. For over three years The Daily Aus was a side hustle but in 2020 what was making headlines became incredibly personal, black lives matter, the US election and COVID all had a part to play. In just 12 months their side hustle accumulated over 200K followers. So what's it like being just 25 and creating one of the most recognisable social news platforms in the country? and did Zara ever anticipate this level of success? Allira Potter isn't your regular Lady Startup. If Allira had to describe her work she would say, that she is an intuitive, a creator, writer, speaker, a model, an empowerment and mindset coach, manifesting queen, baby witch and an all-around spiritual sister. But Allira's life over 18 months ago looked nothing like this. She was newly divorced, working a corporate job, living pay check to pay check and had turned to partying as a coping mechanism. But then in early 2020 after a four-day bender, she realised something needed to give. So as the world went into lockdown Allira went on a detox and turned to her spiritual side. Turns out Allira's newly rejuvenated witchy side was actually something she could make a career out of, so now she works for herself. So how has Allira developed such a unique business, one without a rule book? And how has she developed a six-figure business in such a short space of time? Ash London speaks really openly as a first time mum about her fears and anxieties in pregnancy and postpartum. Ash had to go off anxiety medication when she conceived and she was expecting her symptoms to exacerbate with pregnancy hormones but the opposite was true; she enjoyed a very calm and instinctual pregnancy. She practised yoga and meditation to settle her mind and read all she could about birth which allowed her to focus on the wonder of the experience instead of getting caught up in the fear of the unknown. Open, honest and laugh out loud funny, Ash's story will make your day (and will no doubt encourage you to plan for postpartum support, too!). Sale starts now 20% off storewide at . In today's episode and in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I talk to Paige who was diagnosed with breast cancer when her first baby was nine months old. Paige has the BRCA1 gene and following six months of chemotherapy she chose to have a double mastectomy without reconstruction. Upon completing three rounds of radiation, Paige's pathology results confirmed that she had a complete recovery. It was the best news, made even sweeter by a positive pregnancy test shortly afterwards. Sale starts now 20% off storewide at . Join me today for a conversation with my sister, Hilary. She recently gave birth to her daughter, Rhoda, and I was in the birth centre from the moment her waters broke. It was the first birth I've ever attended and such a precious experience (although I think it confirmed that I wouldn't be the best doula). I had a few roles on the day: support sister, photographer and baby catcher. Needless to say, it was unforgettable. We chat about Hilary's first birth (you can hear it at length if you scroll right back to episode 2), her missed miscarriage and secondary infertility and we take you step by step through her labour. We had a lot of fun recording it so we hope you enjoy listening to our sisterly banter. Sale starts now 20% off storewide at . Full shownotes here: www.businessstraightup.com/046 One Of My MOST Successsful Photography Marketing Strategies: Gift Vouchers for Marketing {Ep 046} Welcome back, amazing business owners & photographers! Ready to chat about one of my most successful photography marketing strategies? Are you on the edge of your seat like BROOKE what are these things? Drum roll please... gift vouchers for marketing! This is a very special BONUS mini episode today, to celebrate the launch of the shop! Today we are going to chat about one of the most successful photography marketing strategies that I have ever used, inspired by Sue Bryce, tweaked to make it my own with business partnerships. Today's episode is ALL about gift vouchers in marketing, how the heck do you use them, and what does this all look like? For this mini episode, shownotes are going to be a little shorter - however, there is a VIDEO version of this podcast as well, so you can see the gift vouchers, and learn more. Quick note about the video - the audio doesn't entirely align with the video in some spots, and quite frankly, I spent WAY too much time trying to figure this out, and still haven't learned how to align them properly. At this point, it is what it is, and done is better than perfect, so I'm sharing anyway. In future videos, I will try to figure it out and make sure they are properly aligned. To see more about one of my most successful photography marketing strategies and the gift vouchers in marketing live and in person, go to www.businessstraightup.com/youtube .
