On today's podcast: 1) Brown University, mourning two students killed during a shooting rampage Saturday, sent students home and called off final exams, classes and assignments for the fall semester. A blanket of snow covered the campus and downtown Providence, Rhode Island, on Sunday morning as the Ivy League school reeled from its first encounter with mass violence. Students recounted barricading themselves in their homes, waiting out the shelter-in-place orders by huddling together in the dark for hours as a manhunt ensued for the suspect who opened fire as the undergrads were preparing for exams. The shooting interrupted the second day of finals on Brown’s campus, shattering the calm in a study session in the Barus & Holley engineering building. 2) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and state leaders pledged to strengthen gun laws a day after a father and son killed 15 people in the nation’s deadliest terror attack. The National Cabinet has tasked police ministers and attorneys-general to explore options including caps on the number of firearms an individual can hold, limits on open-ended licenses, stricter rules on the allowed types of guns and modifications, and a requirement that license holders be Australian citizens. Albanese also said in a statement following an emergency National Cabinet meeting that ministers pledged to eradicate antisemitism, hate, violence and terrorism. 3) Hollywood director and actor Rob Reiner, who helmed 1980s classics like The Princess Bride and This Is Spinal Tap, died Sunday in murky circumstances that triggered a police investigation. He was 78. Reiner was discovered in his Los Angeles home alongside wife Michele Singer Reiner, both of whom appeared to have died from stab wounds, NBC News and other US outlets reported, citing sources close to the family. The Bondi Beach shooting has seen state, territory and federal politicians agree that Australia's already stringent gun laws need to be reviewed and strengthened. The National Firearms Agreement was introduced after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre to standardise rules about who could own a gun - and why. But experts on firearms legislation say some holes in the rules have become apparent. In New South Wales, applications to have a firearms licence are handled by the Gun Registry - which came under intense scrutiny after a tragic murder suicide in 2018, when an estranged father, John Edwards, fatally shot his teenage children. He had a history of domestic violence which hadn't been flagged to the Gun Registry. Not all the changes recommended after the Edwards inquest have been implemented. Deborah Groarke spoke to Maya Arguello who's a law and criminology expert at the Swinburne University of Technology.

.Australia has long been held up across the world as the gold standard of gun control. Firearms laws are the responsibility of the states and territories, and the National Firearms Agreement was introduced after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre to standardise rules about who could own a gun - and why. Now, National Cabinet has decided that even tighter rules around gun ownership should be rapidly rolled out after a licensed firearm user and his son killed at least 15 people in a terrorist attack at Bondi.

In this episode, we break down the terror attack at Bondi Beach, which occurred during a public Hanukkah celebration, by separating what authorities have confirmed from the questions that still remain. We walk through the known timeline, the official explanation, and the immediate response from law enforcement and government officials, while also examining gaps, inconsistencies, and details that are being debated online and in independent media. As with any major breaking event, early narratives move fast, especially when an attack targets a religious gathering, and not all facts emerge at once. We take a careful look at security decisions, media framing, and the broader context surrounding the attack without jumping to conclusions or pushing an agenda. The goal is simple, understand what actually happened, what is verified, and what deserves further scrutiny as more information comes out.Visit our merchandise store

The Bondi Beach massacre has propelled the Australian Government to overhaul its already-tough gun laws. Sixteen people died and dozens were injured when two shooters opened fire on a Jewish gathering on Sunday night in what's been labelled a terror attack. Now 26 victims remain in hospital, with six fighting for life. A 24-year-old suspect is also in hospital under police watch while his 50-year-old father, who's also believed responsible, died at the scene. The older man had been a licensed firearms holder for about a decade and owned six registered firearms. 9News Australia correspondent Charles Croucher told Heather du Plessis-Allan the federal government now wants to cut down the number of guns a person can own and conduct more regular checks on those with licences. He says it also wants to restrict gun ownership to Australian citizens only. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
