The gun violence crisis in America has shown little signs of slowing, and even though most Americans are desperate to stop the violence, congressional gridlock prevents us from making progress. Guns Down America—an organization focused on building a future with fewer guns, weakening the gun industry, and building political and cultural support for policies that will keep us safe from gun violence—has a plan to circumvent that gridlock. Morgan Avrigean of Guns Down America discusses the organization's strategy, and how they've achieved victory's despite decades of inertia. Yes, the regulatory approach to gun control has stalled. But Hudson Muñoz, of Guns Down America, offers a fresh approach: Mobilizing the vast power of consumers to disrupt the firearms industry. He explains to Bradley how that works and offers a simple way for supporters to start flexing their power right now — by making informed choices about where they shop for the holidays. "The gun industry's survival depends on us," says Munoz, "not the other way around."This episode was taped at P&T Knitwear at 180 Orchard Street — New York City's only free podcast recording studio.Send us an email with your thoughts on today's episode: info@firewall.media.Subscribe to Bradley's weekly newsletter, follow Bradley on Linkedin + Substack + YouTube, be sure to order his new book, Vote With Your Phone.

We are 26 days into 2023, and the United States has already experienced 40 mass shootings, as of today Thursday morning. California, a state with some of the nation's toughest gun laws, has suffered three mass shootings in less than a week. In Monterey Park, California on Saturday, a man with a gun killed 11 people, and injured nine. On Monday, there were two more shootings. In Half Moon Bay, a man killed seven people, and injured one. And in Oakland, another armed individual killed one person and injured seven people in a shooting at a gas station that night. According to the Gun Violence Archive, so far this year, in these 26 days of January, there have been nearly 3,000 gun related deaths - a number that includes deaths by suicides, homicide, defensive and unintentional shootings. So what can we do about it? We speak with Igor Volsky, executive director of Guns Down America about guns and gun reform in America.

On the surface, the name Merchant Category Code (MCC) seems pretty dry. But a new MCC may be a powerful tool in preventing mass shootings, as well as other forms of gun violence. An MCC is an identifier used by banks to identify purchases made from candy stores to snowmobile retailers, and is used to spot transaction patterns and possible fraud. But as of this month, there is a new code that can be used to report suspicious purchasing patterns of firearms and ammunition to law enforcement. This reporting is key in preventing mass shootings, as in 8 out of the 13 mass shootings that killed 10 or more people between 2007 and 2018, killers financed their attacks with credit card purchases —many made only weeks before the shootings. To discuss the ins and outs of this code, and what you can be doing to make sure it's implemented, hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by three folks involved in the fight to make the new MCC happen: Igor Volsky, Founder and Executive Director of Guns Down America; Josh Scharff, Brady Senior Counsel and Director of Programs; and Heather Sallan, co-president of the Brady Northern Nevada chapter and a survivor of the Route 91 mass shooting in Las Vegas. A minimum and maximum wage. The minimum wage often stands in for a variety of different workers-rights issues in political debates. This week we dig into how minimum wage laws can function as part of a broader social agenda—and study their direct, and incredibly intriguing opposite. Janelle Jones Economic analyst Janelle Jones says a higher minimum wage is a crucial tool in bridging our nation's widening income inequality gap And in the face of federal inaction, cities and states are setting up to the plate. Sam Pizzigati Income inequality in America is now at a rate we haven't seen in close to 100 years. In a new book, author Sam Pizzigati says it's time to resurrect an idea once endorsed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt … a maximum wage for our nation's highest earners. Jim Hightower A Rube Goldberg Inflationary Spiral Last July, several GOP senators combined their 5-watt intellects to charge that inflation was rising because of the “insane tax and spending spree of President Biden and the Democrats.” Never mind that the “insane” spending is for such sensible, productive, and enormously popular national needs as childcare and jobless benefits, Mitch McConnell's rabidly partisan flock saw the chance to politicize the public's legitimate worries about rising prices. Gun violence activists, survivors, organizers and advocates rallied in front of the White House yesterday, demanding President Biden finally take a different approach to the public health crisis that is gun violence. Igor Volsky is the Executive Director of Guns Down America, and in today's episode, he tells us there's not a single staffer in the White House whose full-time job is to address this crisis, as gun violence continues to take lives. And since Biden pledged from the campaign trail, where's the action to his proposed plan now? Guns Down America is also asking the White House to conduct a federal review of laws across the country, like open carry and stand-your-ground, to consider how they empower vigilantism like that of Kyle Rittenhouse. Texas lawmakers are busy at work restricting reproductive healthcare access, but they're simultaneously expanding the right to carry a firearm with one of their newest laws--a law that is opposed by the majority of Texas voters as well as law enforcement officials. Igor Volsky is the Executive Director of Guns Down America and he points to the research that shows states that pass more permissive gun-carry laws immediately see an increase in gun violence, meaning they just made their constituents a lot less safe. The Supreme Court is set to hear a major NRA-backed gun rights case, which will decide if New Yorkers can carry concealed handguns while in public. Igor Volsky, Executive Director of Guns Down America, is back today to explain how this potentially dangerous ruling could bring us such a great distance from what the 2nd Amendment was intended to do, according to the Founding Fathers. And as Igor reminds us, there are now more guns than people in the United States, and even the “best trained individuals” (a.k.a. the police) prove to misuse their firearms time and time again--so this case could have violent and tragic results. The past month has been devastating when it comes to guns in America. I mistakenly thought that we had gotten a bit of a reprieve during the pandemic. Well, maybe there was break in school shootings-- because the kids were out of school! As the nation returns to "normal," it appears so too are the numbers of shootings returning to pre-COVID levels. I had already invited Igor Volsky, founder & director of Guns Down America (gunsdownamerica.org), on the show for today, when the news broke yesterday about yet another school shooting, this one in Knoxville, TN. Enough already!

Until recently, Igor Volsky, Executive Director of Guns Down America, considered himself an expert on the level of corruption happening inside the NRA; but when he read the details of New York Attorney General Tish James' lawsuit against the organization, he admits to being completely floored -- he had no idea it ran this deep. In today's episode you'll hear all the ways that Wayne LaPierre got reimbursed with NRA funds, also known as the money made off members, for all sorts of egregious behavior. And in doing so, they're breaking the laws of the IRS, and the IRS doesn't like it when they don't get their share of the money. All this, PLUS Igor talks about what a Biden/Harris presidential team can mean for gun reform & some information on the recent spike in gun violence in certain cities.Executive Producer: Adell ColemanProducer: Brittany TempleDistributor: DCP EntertainmentFor additional content: makeitplain.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
"Gun rights" supporters are invested in protecting the 2nd Amendment, but often conveniently forget the 1st. Igor Volsky, Executive Director of Guns Down America, is back for today's episode of MIP and the first order of business is the intersection of gun violence and the recent protests for #BlackLivesMatter. Igor and his team looked at instances of firearms at protests from late May into early June, and found that out of 130 instances, 60 appear to be connected to white nationalists and white supremacists. And while we're raising our standards for gun ownership in this country, we should also be raising our standards of the companies we invest in. Guns Down America is now keeping tabs on how major brands (like your beloved Target) are handling the national call to end racism and if they're actually making changes beyond those posted to their timelines and feeds.CLICK HERE for more information on the topics discussed in today's episode: https://gunsdownamerica.org/Executive Producer: Adell ColemanProducer: Brittany TempleDistributor: DCP EntertainmentFor additional content: makeitplain.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In North Carolina, an armed militia of stay-at-home protestors, complete with what appeared to be a bazooka, first harassed a black family walking outside, then entered a Subway for some sandwiches. Igor Volsky, Executive Director of Guns Down America, wants to know why Subway has remained silent in condemning the group who have direct ties to white nationalism and a specific group that is working to start a race war. Last Thursday Brett spoke with Igor Volsky of Guns Down America. They discussed the increase of the panic buying of guns and some of the gun regulations the Trump administration has tried to loosen amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Assembly member Jo Anne Simon gives an update on how New Yorkers are handling the pandemic. Igor Volsky of Guns Down America talks about the increase in gun sales, domestic violence, and suicide due to Covid-19. In memoriam: Cheryl Schriefer, age 59, who was killed in Illinois. With hosts Cathy Marino Thomas and Mark Bloomberg, and music by Sing Out Louise.
For every one COVID-19 mobile testing site in the United States, there are about 100 gun shops that offer drive-through purchasing--which is a new service made available in the midst of the pandemic, thanks to the Trump administration classifying these businesses as essential. And what we learned from March's data is that there were 1 million additional gun permit applications as opposed to March of 2019. Igor Volsky is the Executive Director of Guns Down America and an expert in gun ownership and the subsequent violence and deaths, and he says that while gun permit numbers are up, so are the number of phone calls to domestic violence and suicide hotlines, and that's not the only trouble afoot. Listen to this episode to hear more startling revelations, potential implications, and some ideas for how you can get involved from home.Executive Producer: Adell ColemanProducer: Brittany TempleDistributor: DCP EntertainmentFor additional content: makeitplain.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
From 2016-2020, the seven studios with films nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars collectively contributed $4.2 million to candidates who also received money from the NRA. In memoriam: Samuel Reynolds, age 16, who was killed in Arlington, TX. With host Ti Cersley, GAGer Ken Kidd, and music by Sing Out Louise.

The blitz of media coverage for this week's 20th anniversary of the Columbine attack has once again put the perpetrators center stage. But school shooters and other would-be attackers have continued to be inspired by the pair who committed suicidal mass murder at their Colorado high school on April 20, 1999— a dynamic known as the “Columbine effect.“ Some have even taken pilgrimage-style trips from as far away as North Carolina and Washington state, to visit Columbine in suburban Denver before returning home to carry out their own shootings. On today's show, we ask: What has changed in the last two decades in the way the media covers mass shootings? And what has changed in our resolve to finally do something about this crisis? Host Jamilah King talks with Columbine survivor Craig Scott, and Dave Cullen, a reporter who rushed to the scene that day, about their recollections and ongoing struggles. We also talk to Mother Jones's own national affairs editor, Mark Follman, about investigating the growing problem of copycat shooters. Finally, Igor Volsky, founder and executive director of Guns Down America, shares reporting from his new book, “Guns Down: How To Defeat The NRA And Build A Safer Future With Fewer Guns,” which proposes a plan for defeating the ever-resolute National Rifle Association. Four interviews, reflecting four unique perspectives at this moment of remembrance and commemoration.
