Weighing 260 pounds, he set out on a journey to transform his life through ultra-endurance training and deep research into the root causes of chronic disease. Through this journey, Neil discovered that maintaining mitochondrial health is key to avoiding chronic illness—a mission he is now dedicated to sharing with others as he aims to help over a billion people achieve metabolic health. Metabolic Health Metabolic health is the body's ability to process and use energy efficiently. When you're metabolically healthy, you maintain stable blood sugar, inflammation and blood pressure levels, reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Metabolic Efficiency Metabolic efficiency is how well the body uses stored fat and carbs as fuel, particularly during exercise. For endurance athletes, it means preserving glycogen and relying more on fat, leading to better stamina with less frequent refueling. Fat-Adapted Endurance Athlete A fat-adapted athlete has trained their body to use fat as a primary fuel source, allowing them to sustain long efforts with less carb intake. This boosts endurance and minimizes energy crashes. Dean Summers grew up in the working-class suburb of Palmyra close to the port and beaches of Fremantle, Western Australia. As a kid, he, his two brothers, and sister swam competitively in the Fremantle Swimming club. He claims to have spent more time at the beach than at school. At 16 Dean joined the merchant navy (which he refers to as the family business) and sailed out of Fremantle on his first ship, the MV Boogalla. The main focus at sea, he jokes, is to stay out of the water. He effectively didn't swim seriously for the next 37 years.Dean is a former elected official of the Seamen's Union of Australia later to become the Maritime Union of Australia, MUA. In 2000 Dean became the Australian National Coordinator of the International Transport Workers Federation and moved to Sydney. The ITF represents and defends the world's 1.3 million seafarers. In 2013 Dean joined Vlad, a Sydney coach with a dedicated following of long-distance swimmers, and began his journey in the demanding international sport of open water marathon swimming. Vlad now boasts the largest stable of Australian long-distance and channel swimmers. After two years of training alongside some of the best long-distance swimmers in Australia, Dean swam the English Channel. In the next 12 months, he went on to claim the Catalina Channel and to circumnavigate Manhattan Island in New York. This is known as the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. Dean became the 137th person to achieve it.Dean is an accomplished Oceans Seven swimmer, a near-impossible series of seven international swims which test the bravery, strength, determination, and resilience of anyone who comes close to it. Dean has six of the seven – English, Catalina, North, and Moloka'i Channel, the Strait of Gibraltar as well as the Cook Strait. The remaining one, the Tsugaru Strait, has been removed from the international swim calendar. After his Newcastle to Sydney swim, he now holds the record for the longest Australian ocean swim of 95.6km.Dean resigned from all work commitments early in 2021 and continues to train and mentor others in the sport of ocean swimming.________________Sponsor DiscountsUse the code 'HAYDEN10' for 10% Off VPA Australia SupplementsDiscount also available at: www.vpa.com.au/HAYDEN10________________Follow us on social media!Instagram: @normlesspodcast YouTube: www.youtube.com/@normlessFacebook: www.facebook.com/normlesspodcast/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/norm...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@normlesspodcastWebsite: normlesspodcast.simplecast.com________________Hayden Kelly, ESSAM, AES, AEP, MHPSHost of the NORMLESS podcastConnect with me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn Website: www.haydenkelly.com.au________________Want to support the show? The best way to show your support is by providing a review on the Apple Podcast app, Spotify or via our facebook page. You can also stay in the loop with the latest podcast updates, news and information by subscribing to our mailing list.

On Episode Twenty-Two of Mindful Warrior Radio, I am joined by Hank Wise, an elite waterman, surfer, and coach who is the reigning King of the Catalina Channel—a 32km open water crossing from Santa Catalina Island to the Southern California mainland—that took him just under eight hours to complete. A Stanford graduate, Hank is the founder and director of Swim Focus and SWIM Long Beach and the Head Coach of Rocket Fish Swim School and SWIM Long Beach Masters. Happiest when he's sailing, diving, paddling, kayaking, rowing, body surfing, and teaching both in and about the ocean, Hank knows a thing or two about assessing risk and finding flow. While he has a commanding physical presence, it is his open heart and generous spirit that has the greatest impact. A day with Hank in and around the water is magical. In this episode, Hank and I discuss a range of topics: how to maintain mental discipline when the end-goal is not in sight; how to interrupt and manage fear; how to commit, submit, and find excitement in challenges; how to prepare for and build into flow; the role that love, gratitude, curiosity and humility play in well-being and success; and how to embody being a warrior with an open heart.Mindful Warrior is hosted by Kami Craig, a former elite athlete, Olympic champion, and performance and culture design coach at Mindful Warrior. Our guest on Episode Twenty-Two of Mindful Warrior Radio—Hank Wise—is an elite waterman, the reigning King of the Catalina Channel, and the founder and director of Swim Focus and SWIM Long Beach. Hank reflects on commitment when facing challenges: “Once you are trained and ready there's this idea that you submit: you submit yourself fully to the task at hand. You not only submit but you lean in. You really lean in. And embrace it. So much so that you look forward to it. You give yourself so wholly to the task that you are like, ‘I am in, I am so in right now.'”Hank describes his approach to embodying love as a warrior: “I look at love like it is an effervescent flow in my heart—like a fountain in my heart. The more love that I give, the more love that comes back. That is true giving to yourself. That is true giving to others. And that is true sharing what you have to share with communities. If you can tap into the power of love, then you have tapped into a source that is so powerful, so regenerative, and the laws of karma are in place. Love is so powerful.”Hank talks about the power of curiosity and humility: “The goodness is out there you just have to be curious. A word that I oftentimes put together with curiosity is humility. Because if you are curious and you're humble that is the secret sauce of going forward. The humility allows for future experimentation and education.” If you enjoyed today's episode, please take the opportunity to share with a friend, follow Mindful Warrior Radio, and leave a review! As a professional goalkeeper for Al-Karamah, one of Syria's biggest clubs, Fahd Saleh had won numerous trophies but then war came to Syria and his house, his life, all he'd known until that point, was destroyed. Fahd decided to move to England to rebuild his life and cling on to his footballing dream, he even went to a job centre and told them how he wanted to work for a football club. Hear his story of how he became Mansfield Town's Goalkeeping Coach and working with Nigel Clough.Barbara Hernandez is known as the Ice Mermaid. The swimmer from Chile is currently attempting to swim the seven seas... That's 127 miles through - the North Channel, the Cook Strait, the Moloka'i Channel, the English Channel, the Catalina Channel, the Tsugaru Strait and the Strait of Gibraltar. Barbara is number one in the world at ice swimming - the first Latin American swimmer to take the crown. She tells us, she is hoping to inspire more women from South America to take up sport and to follow their dreams.Since former Premier League footballer Steven Reid decided to announce that he will be pursuing a career in counselling, he's had current Premier League players and coaches reach out to him for support. Reid also revealed, he has had people opening up in tears on zoom calls and how footballers are in fear of speaking up about how they are truly feeling. He also explained to Caroline that despite playing in the top flight for Blackburn Rovers, there wasn't much enjoyment in the game but he is now hoping to help others through his own experience. Abhejali Bernardova (44, Czech Republic) of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team completed an extreme ultra-triathlon from Dover to Prague, during which she covered a total of 1111 km across the 3 disciplines: 34 km swimming, 895 km cycling, 182 km running. It took her 7 days, 12 hours and 5 minutes.    She started on Monday September 13 2021 at 3am from Dover. In very challenging conditions, with the wind at force 5, she swam the English Channel in 15 hours and 33 minutes. The only other successful crossing on the same day was a 5-person relay team. It was her last chance to swim this year and the swim had already been postponed a few times.    Restrictions did not allow her to stay in France, so she had to take a detour back to Dover and then take a ferry to France. She then cycled from Calais to her hometown of Cheb, near the Czech/German border.    The cycling leg, which took her 4 days, was approximately 900 kilometres through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. She arrived in Cheb on Saturday afternoon, then ran 182km to Prague, arriving on Monday afternoon. Her daily average was 220km cycling and 2 marathons running.    The Czech athlete successfully completed her first English Channel swim 10 years ago. In 2018 she became the 1st Czech, the 10th person in the world, 4th woman and the 1st person from a landlocked country to complete the Oceans Seven*, seven difficult long-distance swims around the world. She is also the only Czech holder of the Triple Crown** of long-distance swimming.    With her ultra-triathlon she aims to connect people and places and inspire others to break down and cross barriers in their own lives. If she can go from the UK to the Czech Republic under her own steam, then we really are closer to each other than we realise, we just put up unnecessary walls between us. She also tries to inspire others to overcome their own limits and show that these limits are often self-created.     (*) Oceans Seven include: English Channel, Gibraltrar Strait, Tsugaru Strait, Catalina Channel, Molokai Channel, North Channel, Cook Strait – all solo, non-wetsuit. At 16, James was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called Retinitis Pigmentosa, which causes degeneration of the retina. His vision rapidly decreased after his diagnosis, and by 21 he was legally blind and fully blind by his early 30s. Yet despite this major setback, James was determined to succeed as an open-water swimmer. He devised a plan to aid his performance, using blows from a whistle to guide his direction. A national inspiration, James became the first ever blind person to successfully cross the English Channel in 1998. Alongside the English Channel, he completed the “triple crown” of open-water swimming when he completed the Catalina Channel and Manhattan Island Swim. In this episode, you'll learn: Why James believes that disabled sports are harsher and rougher than able bodied sports; How James has maintained a positive outlook on life throughout his tribulations; The unbelievable tale of his English Channel journey and the many obstacles he constantly had to overcome; How James has held a fulltime job for 28 years; The power of psychology in sport; The fear James felt as an expected father being blind; How he fares with his daughter also becoming a competitive swimmer; James' work with the Fred Hollows foundation; The unbelievably harsh conditions that openwater swimmers endure; and James' vision for disabled sports going forward.

This weeks we interview Katie Pumphrey! ( @katiepumphreyart ) Katie Pumphrey is an American painter exploring the tension between calm and chaos. Crisp edges and quiet shapes are at a constant tug-o-war with playful movement and vibrating color. Her work dives into the familiar struggle we all face, again and again, to find control, ease the tension, and harness the commotion. We feel steady, level-headed, comfortable — and then something shifts, and we scramble to find our footing. We ping-pong between these moments time and time again. With turbulent brushstrokes and the suggestion of imagery, her work examines these experiences with a hint of humor, play, and lightheartedness. Katie has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has participated in artist residencies at the Studios of Key West, Vermont Studio Center, Gallery Four, and the Creative Alliance in Baltimore. Katie is also a long distance, open water swimmer — who swam the English Channel in 2015, around the island of Manhattan in 2017, and the Catalina Channel in 2018. Those three swims make up the Triple Crown of open water swimming, adding Katie to an elite group of open water swimmers from around the world. “My mind was racing with a thousand thoughts. I was not sure how I would deal with the long, dark hours to come but I soon noticed that each hand pull stirred up the bioluminescence in the water and broke up the darkness below. After I mentally adjusted to the dark space below me, I turned my focus to the night sky and the universe on display in the stars. I had rarely seen a night sky so bright and so full of stars…I got lost in the stars for several hours and the time passed as if I was time traveling…I realized that the whole ocean below me had lit up with its own show of bioluminescence…below me as deep as I could see, there were star-like dots of light, mimicking the night sky. I felt like I was floating in space, suspended between the sky and the sea. It was humbling and at the same time, felt primal on a level that is hard to articulate…it was the ultimate experience…time melted away in the largeness of it all.” (Jim Clifford, Catalina Channel night swim)Jim Clifford, attorney, farmer, and senior citizen shares how he trains his body and mind, the psychology of open water swimming including "the zone", how he manages his mind during the many continuous hours involved, his experience of two contemplative values silence and solitude when swimming alone for hours at a time, and transcendence in nature.https://openwaterswimming.com/2015/11/jim-clifford-thrice-as-nicehttps://www.clifforddebelius.comJane Goodall https://awaken.com/2020/05/mystical-experience-of-jane-goodall-ph-d/All Things Contemplative Blog

Wise beyond her years, Qing's investment in self discovery after a successful, but extremely stressful English Channel swim, is sure to pay dividends in whatever she pursues next in swimming and in life. Qing was so open, honest, and shared so many pearls of wisdom throughout our conversation - I laughed, cried, and found myself wondering if I was doing enough in my own life as she reminded me, "Don't let anything get in the way of what you love, not even yourself." Qing's positivity is infectious, and I just love her energy, enthusiasm, and emotion. In her own words: I am a lifelong swimmer and owes my success in completing the Triple Crown to the people who believed in my crazy ideas. Swimming the English Channel was a seed of an idea as a teenager that started a deep personal and spiritual journey for me. Starting with the English Channel in 2011 and coming back to round out the Triple Crown and Grand Slam with 20 Bridges - 2018, Tampa Bay Marathon Swim - 2019, and Catalina Channel - 2019. Through this journey I can say that the open water swimming community has truly taught me so much about believing in myself, living with purpose, and letting go of fear.I strive to inspire people from all walks of life to reach just a little higher and push the boundaries of their comfort zone. I love seeing the joy of someone who accomplishes something they never thought they could. If you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.comStay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comJoin a supportive group of limit pushers at The Marathon Swimming Collective Music credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.

Today we chatted with a marathon swimmer who first circumnavigated Manhattan in 1991. In 1994, she crossed the English Channel, documenting her preparation in her book Dover Solo. Upon completing the Catalina Channel in 2005 Marcia Cleveland set the record for the fastest Triple Crown, a record that still stands today. And she's still swimming marathons, having completed the Tsugaru Straight just last year. I can relate to so much to what Marcia says about the pieces all coming together and everything working out just right so that you can complete a long swim! Once you're a mom, there's a whole new meaning to "shore support" - and actually getting to the start of a swim can feel like half the battle. After that, all you have to do is swim…While also a marathon swimming mom of two kids, I feel like I'm quite the opposite of Marcia, who has kept logs of every single training swim since she was 15 years old! In comparison, I feel like I barely prioritize swimming, but know that I revel in each opportunity that I make. The pure fact that Marcia started marathon swimming nearly 30 years ago is amazing enough, but the fact that she pushed on with toddlers, young kids, teenagers, and now continues with kids on their way to college is completely awe inspiring to me, I hope you're also inspired! In her own words: Marcia Cleveland has been a swimmer all her life. After her successful age group and collegiate careers, she began swimming Masters (USMS) in her early twenties. Shortly thereafter, she discovered Open Water Swimming, and all the tranquility and challenge it offers. Besides competing in swims and races all over the world, Marcia holds the fastest cumulative time for the Triple Crown and is second in the Grand Slam rankings. She is a 2020 Honoree into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame. Her book, Dover Solo, which depicts the training and preparation she did for her English Channel swim, has become a “must read” for all serious open water swimmers. Her website, DoverSolo.com, contains comprehensive information and logs for all her marathon swims. Besides her personal aquatic accomplishments, Marcia instructs, advises, coaches, and certifies water enthusiasts. She has coached open water swimmers since 1995, helping a multitude successfully achieve major long distance marathon swims. The USMS team she coaches has over 30 members. In 2018, Marcia became an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and has certified over 50 individuals to be lifeguards in the past year. Between 1999 and 2009, Marcia served on several local and national USMS swimming committees and was the Chair of the USMS Open Water Long Distance Committee for 4 years. She currently offers personal training, clinics, and coaching for swimmers at all levels, as well as ARC Lifeguard Certification, including CPR, AED, & First Aid Training. She is lives in the Chicago, Illinois, USA area with her husband, Mark Green and their two children. If you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.comStay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comJoin a supportive group of limit pushers at The Marathon Swimming CollectiveMusic credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.

Today we spoke with Mark Sheridan from his office in London. Growing up Mark was an all around athlete, but couldn't conceive of swimming more than a mile until relatively recently. Being smack dab in the middle of the financial crisis as an employee of Leman Brothers in 2008, he sought the pool for comfort. After hiring a coach about a decade ago he was able to rapidly increase distance once his form improved. Since then, Mark has become a distance swimming addict. After swimming through the entire British Long Distance Swimming Association calendar he started knocking out swims in the United States. In addition to achieving swimming nirvana, Mark has logged several British firsts along the way. While he's done the English channel a few times Mark prefers swimming in a lake surrounded by mountains. In his own words: My name is Mark Sheridan. I live near Sevenoaks in Kent (UK) and am a mad keen open water ultra-distance swimmer. I have completed many swims over 21 miles including 43 mile Lac Leman (4th solo ever & 1st Brit), the English Channel (twice), Loch Lomond (44th person), the Catalina Channel in California, Two-way Windermere, Lake Tahoe, Lake Memphremagog and SCAR to name a few...I served on the committee of the British Long Distance Swimming Association for 7 years (President 2017), am the Swim Secretary the famously gruelling 9-mile Champion of Champions and distance training camps. I was awarded British Long Distance Swimming Association's Swimmer of the Year in 2013 and also won the Global Marathon Swimming Federation's Barra Award for Best Year in 2015. Above all, I enjoy sharing my experiences to help others reach their goals and giving back to this wonderful sport on a voluntary basis. I currently hold the British record for Lake Tahoe solo which I set in August 2018 taking almost 90mins off the prior benchmark. In June 2019, I completed 20 Bridges to bag the title of 'Triple Crown'.Be sure to enjoy Mark's blog!http://reminiscencesofalongdistanceswimmer.blogspot.com/ If you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.comStay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comJoin a supportive group of limit pushers at The Marathon Swimming Collective Music credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.

If you've done the Catalina Channel, you've likely heard of, met, or had our guest, Dan Simonelli, as you kayaker! In 2015, Dan received the Marathon Swimmers Federation Streeter Award for Service to Marathon Swimming, and in fact has supported over 200 marathon swims as either coach, crew chief, support crew, or kayaker. A testament to his own marathon swimming pursuits, in 2016 Dan received the MSF Barra Award for Most Prolific Year, the same year that he commemorated the anniversary of the first crossing of the Catalina Channel in January, a swim tale that he shares in this episode. In his own words: I grew up swimming on summer swim teams. I started swimming regularly in the ocean while I was in the Marine Corp stationed at Camp Pendleton. I subsequently worked as an Ocean Lifeguard for several years while going back to college. Then after many years out of the water, I started swimming again in 2009 when a friend coaxed me into joining their team for the La Jolla 10 Mile Relay, and I’ve just kept swimming since then.In 2012 I founded Open Water Swim Academy as I had noticed a demand from people wanting to experience swimming in the open water but needed guidance. As my own swimming progressed to going longer and training for channel swims and other marathon swims, my coaching and support of others’ swims continued to grow as well.I’ve since supported over 200 Marathon swims in various roles: coach, crew chief, support crew or kayaker. Some of my swims include SCAR twice, English Channel, Catalina Channel twice, other various relays and solo swims around the other CA Channel Islands and many other places such as Hawai’i, San Francisco, Florida, New York, Mexico, Italy, England.I think the swim I’m most proud of is my second Catalina Channel which I did in January 2016 to commemorate the anniversary of the first crossing on Jan 16, 1927, becoming the second person to do so.I’ve been the La Jolla Cove Swim Club President since 2012. I’m a voting Board member of the Catalina Channel Swimming Federation, and a member of the voting panel for the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.If you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.com Stay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comJoin a supportive group of limit pushers at The Marathon Swimming Collective Music credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.

Prior to the 4th of July weekend, I spent my Friday afternoon chatting with Marathon Swimmers Federation 2019 Barra Award nominee, John Batchelder. We relaxed into the interview just like John relaxes into his distance butterfly and touched on swimming for weight loss, how John became "butterfly man", being motivated by others and finding ways to reciprocate that support. In his own words: I am John “Batches” Batchelder, a 39 year old marathon swimmer born and raised in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado. I am the fifth of six children, and swimming was a huge part of my early years, following in the footsteps of my oldest two siblings who were both very good swimmers. I learned to swim when I was 4 or 5, joined USA swimming soon after, and found some success at age 8. However when I aged up and no longer could swim the 25s, I found myself to be at best an average swimmer, and I quickly became discouraged and started to swim less and less. After 3 years of high school swimming near the back of the pack, I had completely given up on swimming. Fast forward about 15 years, at the age of 32 I had gotten so horribly out of shape and decided to get back into swimming, joining my local US Masters Swimming team. Through them I fell back in love with the water, and I particularly enjoyed my team’s distance focused workouts. Through them I was exposed to distance swimming, starting with the 1650 free at swim meets, then the USMS postal swims, and then the USMS open water nationals. I was more and more intrigued by the longer and longer distances, and somewhere along the way I was doing so many swims that started to do some of them butterfly because I needed a break from racing them freestyle and because somehow I could. This eventually brought me into MSF and other open water swimming communities, and I haven’t looked back since. Highlights include the Tampa Bay Marathon swim, ENDWET, 20 Bridges, In Search of Memphre, 3 Rivers Marathon Swim, the Catalina Channel, and the Capri-Napoli Marathon Swim. Outside of swimming my hobbies are recreational mathematics (think math puzzles and riddles), playing bridge, and solving crossword puzzles. I love to travel, which these days goes hand in hand with open water swimming. Above all, even though I am very quiet and shy, I do love hanging out with my fellow open water swimmers and following what everyone else is swimming. If you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.comStay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comJoin a supportive group of limit pushers at The Marathon Swimming Collective Music credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories, we spoke to Paula Yankauskas, an endurance swimmer, veterinarian, and new grandmother. After completing the Catalina Channel in 2018, Paula became the third oldest individual to complete a Triple Crown - though she doesn't focus on her age, she's happy to motivate people to swim into their senior years! We talk about how swimming keeps you fit, meeting kindred swim spirits all over the world, and when someone "thinks you can" swim across the English Channel - so you do.In her own words: Paula Yankauskas grew up in central Connecticut and always loved the water – the summer she turned 11, the City of New Britain opened its outdoor municipal pools – four 25 meter pools, and one 50 meter pool – spread out over different city neighborhoods. In the East End of New Britain, the home pool for those residents was Chesley Pool, and it was there that Paula spent nearly all daylight summer hours for the next five years. When she turned 16, she was eligible to work for New Britain Parks & Recreation; at Chesley, there was only an opening for locker attendant. Paula worked it for a short time; when the lifeguard Captain of Stanley Pool (the 50 meter facility) asked if she’d consider joining their Lifeguard roster; all loyalty to the “neighborhood” vanished, and she took the job at the rival pool Stanley, taking on coaching the swim team as well as teaching swimming (WSI - babies to adults) in addition to Lifeguard duties.Paula is now a Vermont Swimmer – she first came to Vermont for college in 1972; attending UVM for undergraduate work (she was on the swim team for 7 semesters) and put in 1 year toward a Masters’ degree in Physics before getting into veterinary school. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in Philadelphia in 1981. Central to Paula’s focus are 3 things: LVVS, family, and swimming, and not necessarily in that order (the attention devoted to each varies on a daily basis). LVVS and family took over for the 20 years between education and the 2001 opening of The Swimming Hole in Stowe; but once she had a pool to stretch out in, she was set to return to swimming and has not looked back. To top it all off, the Green River Reservoir State Park is in Paula’s home town of Hyde Park, Vermont - it is a “quiet” body of water (no power boats), so ideally suited for open water swimming. She founded Lamoille Valley Veterinary Services (LVVS), in 1985 as a mixed animal practice and over the years it has evolved into a 5 doctor, full-service facility for small animals, mostly cats and dogs. Paula’s current focus is on behavioral and emotional health of dogs and cats. An endurance athlete, Paula has at times held titles for age – she was formerly the oldest person on record to have swum the length of Lake Memphremagog - September 2014, 25 miles, at 60 years. And currently, for the third oldest (average age) for the Triple Crown of open water swimming, having completed the English Channel in 2016 at 62, the Manhattan Island Marathon in 2017 at 63, and the Catalina Channel in 2018 at 64. She does think the age thing gets a little “old” at times, but is happy to motivate people to swim into their senior years, or even get started then.If you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.comStay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comMusic credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.

She is the first (and only) person to have completed the Triple Crown of Open Water swimming 3 times and also the first to have completed two of the Triple Crown swims as “doubles.” To say she loves the Triple Crown swims would be an understatement. Courtney has swum around Manhattan 4 times, across the Catalina Channel 4 times and across the English Channel 3 times. In her quest to complete each of the Triple Crown swims as doubles, in 2017 Courtney completed the 57 mile 40 Bridges swim (by circumnavigating Manhattan twice) in 20 hours 15 minutes and 55 seconds. Ten weeks later, Courtney swam from the mainland of California to Catalina and back in 33 hours and 13 minutes. In addition to her Triple Crown Swims, Courtney was the 7th person to swim across Cape Cod Bay. More on the interview later in the show. We’re still under a shelter-in-place order and we learned this week that the order is being extended until the end of April. As mentioned previously on the show, we encourage everyone to follow the guidelines of the WHO and their local authorities on what to do. While our pools and parks are closed we are keeping busy with running and other dry land activities.Speaking of which, this week’s shout out goes to Drew Sapp. He’s Co-owner of Crew Racing and Rehab and he sent us some dry land workouts for bands after we posted up on IG that we didn’t know how to use them. Thanks for that Drew! This got us thinking that we should host a bunch of these “pools are closed” workouts on our site. If anyone else has some cool dry land workouts that they want to share, send us an email at lowtideboyz@gmail.com and we’ll get that up on our site. In other news, our collab shirt fundraiser for the WILD Youth Initiative created by WILD Swimrun is still selling well! He has raced in 23 Swimrun events, including 5 Ötillö World Championships. He formed California Swimrun with Sean Durkin in 2015 and hosted the first race in United States on September 20th, 2015. Finally, it bears repeating that Andy was our first Patron on Patreon. In this interview we chatted about how he learned about Swimrun. How he pestered Mats and Michael to get into the World Championship with his friend Sean Durkin in 2015 and then hosted the first swimrun race in the U.S. 4 weeks later. We also chatted about how the sport is growing in the U.S. leading up to the first Ötillö race in California. We chatted about the genesis for the California Swimrun “Rules of Swimrun:”Tell everyone about swimrun!Greet everyone you see while runningStay with your teammate during runs and swimsDog in and out of the swims (Funny story about this one!)No complaining…everWe also chatted about the genesis of Ötillö Catalina and the role that Andy and California Swimrun played in getting that race to happen. The team of Sean, Natalie Foote and Andy worked really hard to help design the great course that we all raced. Finally, we chatted about Andy’s thoughts on how to best grow the sport in the U.S. while keeping the soul of the sport as it will inevitably grow in the U.S. Whether by supporting solo divisions to help introduce the sport to folks or showcasing local events, the future of the sport is about getting people to show up to the races. Andy feels that the team aspect of the sport is where the magic is. The biggest part is hosting swimrun events and the rest will take care of itself. That’s it for this week’s show. Native to the coastal shores of Southern California, Sabrina Houston first heard about the Catalina Channel Crossing as a young girl. A swimmer by nature, Sabrina grew up swimming in the Pacific, and there was something about that crossing she couldn't quite shake. It stayed with her for decades and moved deep into her heart where it became a dream she saw to fruition less than two weeks ago. Sabrina was a competitive athlete through high school and college, she is used to the long training hours and focused determination it takes to realize a goal. She now dedicates her professional life to the endurance athlete as co-owner of PlayTri Oceanside and race director of IRONMAN 70.3 Indian Wells - La Quinta. The Catalina Channel crossing is one of the Oceans Seven, a list of seven-channel swims around the world that represent some of the most daunting challenges on the planet. In this episode, Sabrina takes us through this epic life event from inspiration through to the dry sands of Sacred Cove beach where she landed after 12 hours, 52 minutes and 12 seconds of swimming. This conversation covers all the bases and thanks to Sabrina's husband and crew chief, Matt; we gain deep clarity on the challenges she faced for over 22 miles. From cross currents to water temperatures, mental waning, and intense fatigue, we all get a distinct picture of the daunting reality of a significant channel swim such as Catalina. Doug McConnell, with the help of his A Long Swim Team, became only the 48th person over age 50 to swim the English Channel, in 14 hours that were divided between heavy waves and pitch black darkness. The success of the English Channel swim has inspired the A Long Swim Team to continue with marathon swims, including the 24-mile length of Tampa Bay, the 21-mile distance of the Catalina Channel in California, and a 29-mile circumnavigation of Manhattan Island in New York City. The swims of the English Channel, the Catalina Channel and Manhattan Island make up the “Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming,” of which Doug was the 89th person to complete, and only the 15th person to complete all over the age of 50. This week’s podcast guest blew my mind. She has completed some epic swims – which to me, at my stage in my swimming, seem like superhuman feats of awe inspiring magnitude. By anyone’s standards, Sylvia’s swimming achievements are impressive. And yet. She is humble. Self deprecating. Generous. But most importantly, she’s just a normal person. Like me! I can’t emphasise enough the significance of this. What this means. It means that I’m also capable of such swims. Not right now, obviously. But that I have that potential. If I choose to pursue it with enough commitment. Not that I have any desire to do a swim such as the Catalina channel any time soon. But what I do want to be capable of is 3km in skins in July. And at the minute I’m only just managing to complete a single length of front crawl. In a small pool. Which is exactly where Sylvia started. In her thirties. And the way to achieve your goals? Just keep turning up. And help other people along the way. Because everyone is struggling. Sylvia shares with raw honesty what it is like to train for and complete long distance swims. She also shares what it is like to be unable to complete a challenge. She strips away the romanticism and is just very honest about the cold, the boredom, the hunger. The hours of pool work required - which I know is enough to put off plenty of open water swimmers. And despite the raw honesty about how grim it can be, she also describes swimming as dancing with the water. As meditation. This is someone who can tolerate the hours in the pool, but is clearly an open water swimmer at heart. She is as much about the dipping, the social side and the cake as she is about the big swims. She tells a very funny story about her English Channel relay swim – five women over forty just going for it and having a great time. It makes me think of my four swim sisters who I’ve recently spent a week in the Cumbrian lakes with – visualising us doing something similar. Not the English Channel. But Corsica to Sardinia? Catalina? Alcatraz. Before we all turn fifty? 'No half measures' is how I characterised Sylvia. It’s not a bad maxim to live by. This week I’ll definitely be being more Sylvia! Things we talked about San Francisco Bay, Lake Tahoe, Pacific Open Water Swim Company, English Channel swim, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge to Bay Bridge, North Channel swim, Catalina Channel, Boston Light swim, Gibraltar Strait crossing, Cork, Kinsale, Dover Channel Training Group, Suzie Dods, Ranie Pearce, Chloe McCardel, Ned Denison, Kelly Gentry

He swam the English Channel between England and France in August 2009, followed by the North Channel between Scotland and Northern Ireland a year later. In May 2011 he swam the Gibraltar Strait between Spain and Morocco and then in October of that year he swam the Catalina Channel off California. He followed it up the following February with a swim of the Molokai Channel in Hawaii and then the Cook Strait between the north and south islands of New Zealand the same month. He then completed the challenge with a 20km swim of the Tsugaru Strait in Japan. Here Redmond tells us exactly why his endeavours have seen him inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

Episode 35: Scott Sambucci Today’s featured guest is…. me! – Scott Sambucci – your podcast host and Sales Geek extraordinaire.  I’ve spent more than two decades building and selling technology products, leading three Silicon Valley startups each to their first millions in revenue. Now with SalesQualia, I’m the Founder of SalesQualia where I work with enterprise/B2B startups on achieving scalable revenue growth. I’ve authored two books on Startup Selling, spoken at a TEDx and presented at The Lean Startup Conference (to name a few accolades I’m awfully proud of…) Outside of work, I tackle crazy long endurance events, including three Ironman triathlons, marathon swims across The Catalina Channel, Uberman and most recently, the Tahoe 200 – a 200-mile foot race circumnavigating Lake Tahoe. Call or email anytime at scott@salesqualia.com or (415) 596-0804. With SalesQualia, I help early stage B2B enterprise startups achieve scalable revenue growth. Our clients include graduates of accelerator and incubator programs such as Y-Combinator, TINC and All-Turtles. Show Notes & Topics: Why me this in this episode? What is the ONE sales activity in your company that matters most? I've worked with hundreds of startups either in a 1:1 relationship, and via live webinars workshops. And almost in every single case, as I'm first starting conversations with startup teams, I hear are things like, "Hey, I need to work on my pricing, and I need to work on my slide deck, and I need to work on my demo, I need to close more deals, I need to do a better job prospecting, I'm trying to figure out cold emailing." Obviously there's a lot of places in your sales process, but… The reason, that I'm asking the question I’m asking in this episode is that in every case with clients and workshop attendees, there is ONE specific sales activity that matters most. The problem is that most startup teams fail to 1) Recognize that ONE activity, and 2) Focus on that activity as a key driver to growth. In this episode, I’ll dive deep into three startups where I’ve worked as examples – Altos Research, Aplia and Blend – to illustrate this point. By recording this episode, my hope for you is that you can begin to identify the ONE sales activity that matters most for YOUR startup, so that you can achieve sales velocity and scalable revenue growth.
