On a warm August day in 1910, Sheriff Jake Houpt and his deputies attempted to arrest brothers George and Oscar Chitwood outside the Garland County Courthouse in Hot Springs, Arkansas. A gunfight soon erupted, leaving both the sheriff and George dead. And when Oscar himself was killed in December under the protection of deputies, a mob of mysterious masked men were blamed for the lynching. But evidence suggests the story of Oscar's death might have been a cover for something else. My guest is Christopher Thrasher, who along with fellow author and historian Guy Lancaster wrote the book "The Murder of Oscar Chitwood in Hot Springs, Arkansas". He summarizes this fascinating story for us on this latest episode of Most Notorious. On December 26, 1910, Oscar Chitwood lay lifeless on the courthouse lawn in Hot Springs, his wrists shackled together and his body torn by bullets. The deputies on the scene claimed that masked men had lynched their prisoner and that the lawmen were innocent bystanders to the carnage. Newspapers everywhere proclaimed this killing another example of vigilantism run rampant. Within days, however, the official story fell apart, and these deputies were charged with cold blooded murder. Authors Guy Lancaster and Christopher Thrasher tell the little-known story of accused outlaw Oscar Chitwood, the authorities he dared defy and the mysterious resort town of Hot Springs, a place where the Wild West met the epitome of civilization and where the boundaries between lawman and outlaw were never all that clear. Christopher Thrasher earned his doctorate in American history from Texas Tech University. In 2015, Thrasher published his first book, Fight Sports and American Masculinity: Salvation in Violence from 1607 to the Present. He published his second book, Suffering in the Army of Tennessee: A Social History of the Confederate Army of the Heartland from the Battles for Atlanta to the Retreat from Nashville, in 2021. Guy Lancaster holds a PhD in heritage studies from Arkansas State University and currently serves as the editor of the online Encyclopedia of Arkansas, a project of the Central Arkansas Library System. He has authored, coauthored or edited several books on the history of violence in Arkansas, including American Atrocity: The Types of Violence in Lynching (2021). Purchase the book HERE

Lynching is often viewed as a narrow form of violence: either the spontaneous act of an angry mob against accused individuals, or a demonstration of white supremacy against an entire population considered subhuman. However, in this new treatise, historian Guy Lancaster exposes the multiple forms of violence hidden beneath the singular label of lynching. Lancaster, who has written extensively on racial violence, details several lynchings of Blacks by white posses in post-Reconstruction Arkansas. Drawing from the fields of history, philosophy, cognitive science, sociology, and literary theory, and quoting chilling contemporary accounts, he argues that the act of lynching encompasses five distinct but overlapping types of violence. This new framework reveals lynching to be even more of an atrocity than previously understood: that mobs did not disregard the humanity of their victims but rather reveled in it; that they were not simply enacting personal vengeance but manifesting an elite project of subjugation. Lancaster thus clarifies and connects the motives and goals of seemingly isolated lynch mobs, embedding the practice in the ongoing enforcement of white supremacy. By interrogating the substance of lynching, American Atrocity: The Types of Violence in Lynching (U Arkansas Press, 2021) shines new light on both past anti-Black violence and the historical underpinnings of our present moment. Guy Lancaster is the editor of the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture in Little Rock. He is also one of the foremost historians of lynching in America. American Atrocity is his most recent book. American Atrocity focuses on Arkansas, but it tells a larger story of lynching and race relations in America. Dr. Lancaster, a native of Arkansas, also gets to the heart of the matter by asking: what is a lynching? And how do we know actually happened in many of these instances? The short answer is: we don't. And what we know or don't know has a lot to do with the history of race in this country, where white people were believed without question when they accused an African American person of a crime. Mixing traditional primary source research with theory about race, Guy has written an important book. But as he and Colin discuss, lynching hasn't disappeared, it has instead only changed. What can events like the killing of Trayvon Martin and the attacks of January 6 tell us about the legacy of lynching and the continued problem of systematic racism in this country? Lynching is a heavy topic, but these are heavy times.

A new book authored by noted Arkansas historian Guy Lancaster titled American Atrocity tears down the historic scaffolding upholding the historic rationale for racialized lynching in America to make way for the true reasons behind the violent practice. American Atrocity is published by the University of Arkansas Press and is available at discount. Lancaster will discuss his book at Six Bridges Book Festival October 24th. Registration for the free virtual event is required.
In Fall 1919 the small town of Elaine, Arkansas erupted in violence. White mobs fearful that African American sharecroppers were organizing to fight for higher wages launched massive and violent assaults against the Black population. The death toll was in the hundreds. For this episode, I interviewed Lisa Hicks Gilbert, a descendant of two of the Elaine 12 and founder of the Descendants of Elaine. Hear how she found out about the massacre as an adult, how the consequences of the massacre still feed racial inequalities there today, and why it is important to make sure the right people are telling these stories. We'll be back soon! Until then, please enjoy the saga of Snake Bells. These come from Episodes 175-178, back in March and April 2016, when nobody had ever heard of Donald Trump.  Hope y'all like 'em again, or maybe even for the first time.  From our Wikipedia (thanks, Guy Lancaster!): Snake Bells. Snake Bells offers a total yard security system consisting of sirens and alarms that warn of, and scare off, approaching snakes. The system was developed by Esob Durling and his wife, Pammy Parts. Esob once worked down in Huntsville, Alabama on the "Star Wars" system, in addition to voicing the character of Cap'n Crunch on one of the earliest 1-800 numbers. In Episode 176, Dunlap announced, to Jackie's surprise, that while the podcast was being recorded, the Snake Bells crew was over at Jackie's house installing a system. By the next week, Jackie had experienced severe sleep deprivation and was threatening to report the Snake Bells company for elder abuse if they did not immediately dismantle the system at his house. However, after the crew returned to take down the Snake Bells system, Jackie began finding all kinds of poisonous snakes in his yard and accused the company of planting them there.
