The San Diego Board of Education is sending its teachers to provide in-person learning to migrant teenagers who have crossed the border and are currently being sheltered at the San Diego Convention Center. Meanwhile, parents in the same district are frustrated that their children continue to learn remotely from home. Students are expected to transition to a hybrid model of in-person and remote learning starting April. 12th. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), whose district is in San Diego, weighs in on this and why he thinks it's a double standard that teachers are being asked to offer safe in-person instruction to unaccompanied minors but it's not safe enough for U.S. students to return to the classroom full-time. A World Health Organization report says the origins of the coronavirus that created the global pandemic was likely transmitted from animal to human in China. The study is far from being over but shows this coronavirus was not likely constructed or manipulated in a Wuhan lab. Perter Ben Embarek, the leader of the W-H-O investigative team that traveled to Wuhan, says "more work is needed." Jamie Metzl, is a member of the World Health Organization international advisory panel on Human Genome editing and author of the book "Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity" discusses the new World Health Organization report regarding the origins of the coronavirus and the increased risk of something like this happening again with stronger strains. Plus, commentary by Guy Benson, host of the Guy Benson Show.

Jamie Metzl is a technology and healthcare futurist, geopolitics expert, and the author of “Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity.” He is the smartest, craziest, and most interesting guy that I've ever interviewed — really, he's who I hope to be when I grow up — and he paints a vision of the future that is both more informed and more hopeful than most. Leslie kicks off the show with her 'Ripped from the Headlines' news segment. Here are the two stories she shares, while also giving her own take on the news: 1. CDC Director Condemns Trump’s ‘China Virus’ Tweet during questioning from Rep. Lois Frankel (D-FL) - https://www.thedailybeast.com/cdc-director-robert-redfield-condemns-trumps-china-virus-tweet 2. NBC NEWS: "Inside the White House's bungled effort to combat the coronavirus"- https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/mismanagement-missed-opportunities-how-white-house-bungled-coronavirus-response-n1158746 Leslie is then joined by Advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO), and technology futurist, Jamie Metzl. Jaime is also author of the highly acclaimed book "Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the future of Humanity" (releasing in paperback on April 7th, 2020, pre-order link here: https://tinyurl.com/wt2uuv4). His Twitter handle is @JamieMetzl. Here are some of Jamie's key points on the COVID-19 pandemic: - This has the potential to be a much greater global crisis than 9/11 and will require the type of wise global leadership we seem to be lacking. - If ever there was a time for leaders and people to step forward for the common good, this is it. - The name of the game now is to contain the virus as much as possible while we race to develop a vaccine. - It is all but certain that most of our lives will be severely disrupted for a significant period of time. - Because of our evolutionary history, our brains are designed for linear thinking and to assume that the future is likely to be significantly similar to the past. This could well be one of those moments where our world suddenly, and perhaps irrevocably, changes. - By identifying The COVID-19 outbreak as a global pandemic, the world health organization is merely acknowledging what most everyone around the world is discovering: that this crisis is more global and far more serious than most people appreciated only a few short days and weeks ago. - While efforts to contain this outbreak must proceed, the contagion has already or will soon reach community spread levels where a containment strategy will no longer be viable. - While efforts in China and Korea have shown that extreme measures can at least temporarily slow the spread of this virus, we are likely to see very rapid increases in contagion levels around the world. - Even with a lower than previously reported fatality rate, fatalities are likely to be very significant as the total number of infections grow.
The guest host for today's show is Brad Bannon. Brad runs Bannon Communications Research, a polling, message development and media firm which helps labor unions, progressive issue groups and Democratic candidates win public affairs and political campaigns. His new show, 'Deadline D.C. with Brad Bannon,' airs every Monday from 3-4pm ET. Brad is first joined by Advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO), and technology futurist, Jamie Metzl. Jamie explains that while efforts to contain this outbreak must proceed, the contagion has already or will soon reach community spread levels where a containment strategy will no longer be viable. He also outlines that while efforts in China and South Korea have shown that extreme measures can at least temporarily slow the spread of this virus, we are likely to see very rapid increases in contagion levels around the world. During the second half of the show, Brad leads a political round-table with Nick Guthman and Mark Grimaldi. The roundtable discuss the youth vote in the 2020 Democratic primary and general elections, as well as the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic on the race for the White House. Nick is Co-Founder of 'Blue Future,' a national organizing program run out of the Youth Progressive Action Catalyst, a youth-led political action committee (PAC), focused on organizing young people around progressive electoral campaigns. His Twitter handle is @NickGuthman. The website for 'Blue Future' is www.OurBlueFuture.us. Mark Grimaldi, or 'Marky Mark' as Leslie Marshall calls him, is the Executive Producer of this show. In addition to being the Executive Producer for the Leslie Marshall show for 14 years, for the past 12 years Mark has been a progressive political activist and campaign volunteer of President Obama's (2008 and 2012), Senator Bernie Sanders' (2016), and Secretary Hillary Clinton's (2016). Preimplantation genetic testing has opened up a world of helping families have successful pregnancies. But when does the testing and selection of embryos go too far? In this episode of Inside Reproductive Health, Griffin talks to Dr. Jamie Metzl, author of Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity. They discuss the implications of advanced technologies such as the future of embryo screening and gene-editing. More importantly, Dr. Metzl discusses the significance of understanding the coming technologies and how those in the fertility field can help prepare their patients and the rest of the world for these changes.
Jamie Metzl (@JamieMetzl) is a technology futurist and geopolitical expert, entrepreneur, media commentator, Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council, and author of Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity. What We Discuss with Jamie Metzl: Why the speed at which genetic engineering is progressing is akin to Neil Armstrong stepping foot on the moon just six years after the first flight of the Wright brothers. Why the genetic traits that seem universally beneficial to us today may turn out to be as ephemeral (and useful to humanity) as powdered wigs and skinny jeans. The danger our species faces when we're able to selectively edit out genes that cause disorders without fully understanding their potential benefits or evolutionary purpose (e.g., recessive sickle cell disease carriers' resistance to malaria). Why China — run by a government that values the good of the country over the rights and privacy of its citizens — is better poised than the US and other Western countries to excel in the application of genetic science. Why addressing the values of equity and diversity today is important for avoiding genetic stagnation and greater friction between the haves and have-nots of tomorrow. Countries like China are already massively pushing the limits on genetic science, well beyond what we may even feel comfortable with in the US todayChina is extremely wealthy, extremely powerful, and has a “Wild West” culture around genetic engineering, designer babies, and human genome editing“The Arms Race of the Human Race” - what happens in a world where the US restricts or prevents genetic engineering but another country, for example, China, substantially embraces them?Slippery slope and how this radically starts to change our world pretty incredibly - most people would probably want to know if their child had a higher risk of a certain disease, so they could prevent it… what happens when we make that shift from a child to a human embryo?“The End of Sex” - “Old Fashioned Sex” will soon be viewed as reckless and dangerous.“Would you play Russian roulette with your child’s future health by NOT affirmatively selecting health?"Would you wish polio on a child because it’s natural? What about a genetic disease that could be prevented? It’s not a question of wonderful nature vs scary science. Nature is pretty scary. People die of horrible genetic disorders today. Why Jamie considers anti-vaccine “monstrous""In vitro gametogenesis” - what happens if you could make 100,000 potential embryos and pick the healthiest ones? What is a synthetic womb and why is it something that is so crazy it might make total sense in 30-50 years? Why Jamie’s goal is to live to 150, and what he’s doing to get there. Bill spoke with the Former Speaker Of The House Newt Gingrich on his new book called "Collusion" and Latest in Politics. Bill and Mike then talked to Santana band member Michael Carabello on the "Woostock" exhibit at The Rock Hall for the 50th anniversary. Finally, Bill talked to Jamie Metzl, a Senior Fellow for Technology and National Security at the Atlantic Council about his new book "Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity." The Darwinian theory of "natural" selection, is indeed about to be hacked. Imagine the ethical dilemmas that will confront us.
Fascinating conversation this morning with Jamie Metzl, Author of “Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity.” I really believe this is going to be the moral debate of our lifetime. We are at the dawn of genetic exploration that will alter our lives for the better and possibly for the worse. There’s little doubt major advances are coming soon to better understand the human body that will come with the cures for diseases, but… and it’s a big but, we will have to grapple with how far we’re willing to go. Science fiction is turning into reality. Already “parents” can pick the eye color of their kids, and we know the number of kids born with down syndrome is almost non-existent in countries like Iceland and Austria as women are opting to terminate their pregnancies when the genetic marker comes back positive. Metzl believes in our lifetime almost all pregnancies will be done through invitro-fertilization where parents will pick the makeup of the strongest embryo. Like I said—debate of our lifetime. Ramifications are far-reaching: politics, healthcare, economics and even war.
In this episode of Intelligence Matters, host Michael Morell speaks with Jamie Metzl, a geopolitics expert, technology futurist and author of a new book called Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity. Metzl and Morell discuss recent advances in reproductive technologies and genetic screening, as well as how their convergence with other technologies like artificial intelligence and big data processing could fundamentally change population health and growth. They also review the national security implications of certain advances in genetic engineering, including how societies worldwide may navigate the ethical questions raised by gene editing and embryo screening.
