82% of employees are at risk of burnout this year according to Fortune magazine. In 2023 physician burnout dropped from 48% to 62.8% in 2021, according to the American Medical Association. Perhaps the drop in burnout was due to increased education from docs like Dr. Greg Hammer educating physicians on resilience.  Dr. Greg Hammer, MD is a recently retired professor in the Stanford University School of Medicine, pediatric intensive care physician, pediatric anesthesiologist, mindfulness expert, and the author of GAIN without Pain: The Happiness Handbook for Health Care Professionals. This proven path toward personal resilience can be implemented by anyone, anywhere, in just a few minutes a day. Increased resilience could save your practice, your patients, your marriage – or even your life. GAIN Without Pain is a four-step process toward happiness. GAIN is an acronym for Gratitude, Acceptance, Intention, and Non-judgment. In this episode of The Health Fix Podcast, Dr. Jannine Krause interviews Dr. Greg Hammer on his GAIN method and why it's so successful for anyone to prevent burnout.  What You'll Learn In This Episode: What's happening neurologically with certain thoughts Why building resilience to stress can prevent burnout How Dr. Hammer's method helps you to manage stress The connection between lack of sleep and burnout   Resources From The Show: greghammermd.com  GAIN without pain: The Happiness Handbook for Health Care Professionals Instagram @greghammermd

Chats with Susan Burrell

This Episode of Empowering Chats is about grief. And this month's theme is “Eternal.” I intentionally placed this interview under this theme.  I believe that all of us have an eternal essence, an eternal soul and an eternal energy that stays in the hearts of those we come in contact with even when we have left our physical bodies. My guest, Emily Thiroux Threatt is here to talk about grief and how to find our happiness within the folds of losing someone close to us. Her latest book is called, The Grief and Happiness Handbook, which is also a guidebook.  This handbook has exercises to help guide you out of your grief. Emily lost 2 wonderful husbands who ironically both died of the same thing. After losing her first husband who was sick for 2 years, she never thought she'd marry again but then she met Ron, her second husband. He was a new thought minister and together they practiced living in the moment. And after his diagnosis she thought that practice of living in the moment was going to make all the difference in the world. And in some ways, it did help her, when he transitioned, but in other ways not so much.  For a time, she found herself quite lost with no motivation to do much of anything but watch TV. Then she began to journal and found that writing grounded her. The more she wrote the more she found it grounding. What she realized is that when one is grieving, they often get stuck and are not sure where to go. Everything looks and feels different. She found that she needed guidance on where to go next. And this experience of writing, creating grief cards and slowly re-emerging into daily life is how she began to heal. She took what she learned and began to work with others in her community who were navigating grief and encouraged people to come up with intentions that would serve them directly. Sometimes they are simple intentions like “today I am going to eat healthy.” Emily says as divine beings we can embrace both grief and happiness as they do not have to directly oppose each other. The one thing people who are grieving should know is to take care of themselves and remember to ask for help. This is especially important in the early stages of grief. Watch and observe what you are doing. Be with people, go outside and allow yourself to be happy and around people you love. Do not hide. Emily also founded the non-profit, The Grief and Happiness Alliance where she offers weekly classes and meetings. She lives in Maui, Hawaii and also has a link where you can offer donations to the victims of the Maui fire so that her handbook can be available for anyone directly affected by the fire. From the art of happiness back cover. I believe that the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness. That is clear. Whether one believes in religion or not, whether one believes i this religion or that religion, we allare seeking something better on life. So I think the very motion of our life is towards happiness. If you maintain a feeling of compassion, loving kindness, then something automatically opens your inner door. Through that, you can communicate more easily with other people. And that feeling of warmth creates a kind of openness. You'll find that all human beings are just like you, so you'll be able to relate to them more easily. That gives you a spirit of friendship. Then there's less need to hide things, and as a result, feelings of fear, self-doubt, and insecurity are automatically dispelled. In our daily lives problems are bound to arise. The biggest problems in our lives are the ones we inevitably have to face, like old age, illness and death. Trying to avoid our problems or simply not thinking about them may provide temporary relief, but i think that there is a better approach. If you directly confront your suffering, you will be in a better position to appreciate the depth and nature of the problem. If you are in a battle, as long as you remain ignorant of the status and combat capability of your enemy, you will be totally unprepared and paralyzed by fear. However, if you know the fighting capability of your opponents, what sort of weapons they have and so on, then your in a much better position when you engage in war. In the same way, if you confront your problems rather than avoid them, you will be in a betterposition to deal with them. Riverhead books. A member of Penguin Putnam Inc. Dr. Sharp has three degrees in psychology (including a Ph.D.) and an impressive record as an academic, clinician and coach. He previously set up one of Sydney's most respected clinical psychology practices, a highly regarded Executive Coaching practice, and is the founder of The Happiness Institute, Australia's first organisation devoted solely to enhancing happiness. We spoke about understanding and measuring happiness, joy in sport and business, gratitude - and positivity and engagement in high performing setups. Fergus also tells me about how to deal with negative thoughts - even though we can't always control them there is definitely a way to deal with them.
