Sometimes one just ends up doing a podcast that could be construed as a defense of some seemingly indefensible things, and instead of just deleting it and trying again next week, one realizes that any good faith effort to understand the world will be willfully misunderstood as indefensible by people of less than good faith, so what difference does it make? And, no, somehow this isn't even about Russell Brand. Listen, if you must! Has something we said, or failed to say, made you FEEL something? When does a task become an event, and when does an event become a task? That's the question I am answering this week.  You can subscribe to this podcast on: Podbean | Apple Podcasts | Stitcher | Spotify | TUNEIN Links: Email Me | Twitter | Facebook | Website | Linkedin The All-New Time And Life Mastery Course The Working With… Weekly Newsletter The FREE Beginners Guide To Building Your Own COD System Carl Pullein Learning Centre Carl's YouTube Channel Carl Pullein Coaching Programmes The Working With… Podcast Previous episodes page Episode 291 | Script Hello, and welcome to episode 291 of the Working With Podcast. A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein, and I am your host for this show. Last week, in my YouTube video, I shared how to get the most out of Todoist's latest new feature, task duration. This feature allows you to add a duration time to your task so you can estimate how much time you will need. As I explained in the video, this is not a feature I personally would use but I know a lot of people have been requesting this for some time. This sparked a lot of comments on the subject of Todoist introducing a calendar so people can drag and drop tasks onto a calendar and I know this type of feature appeals to a lot of people. However, there are problems with this approach to task management and this week's question asks me to explain why this would be a problem. So, I decided to oblige and explain why this is something you do not want to be doing.  So, without further ado, let me hand you over to the Mystery Podcast Voice for this week's question. This week's question comes from Steve. Steve asks, Hi Carl, I've heard you say in the past that you should not be putting tasks on your calendar and events onto you to-do list. Could you explain your thinking behind that approach? Hi Steve, thank you for your question. In the early days of Mac OS 10, in the early 2000s, Apple brought tasks into their calendar app and they lived on the right hand side of the calendar. It seemed logical. Here was a list of all your appointments and on the right hand side there was a list of all the things you needed to do that day.  It soon became apparent that this was not working. You see tasks and appointments are two very different things. An appointment is a commitment to another person or persons that you will be in a specific place at a specific time. That could be a meeting room, a place or in front of your computer with either Zoom or Teams open.  A task on the other hand is something you decide needs doing but can be done at any time. You might find you have twenty minutes while waiting for a doctors appointment and you could call the people you need to call or send out those emails you need to send.  In my case, I might have a blog post to write but it doesn't matter whether I write it in the morning, afternoon or evening. The only thing that matters is I write it. I could decide to postpone it until tomorrow because I have too many appointments today and that would be fine. I am not letting anyone down.  The way I look at it is, my calendar is there to tell me what I have committed to and with whom. My task manager tells me what I need to do when I have some free time.  Now, time does not accept a vacuum. We cannot do nothing, ever. If you think about it laying on the sofa mindlessly scrolling through news or social media feeds is doing something. Similarly, taking an afternoon nap is still doing something. You are always doing something whether you are consciously aware of it or not.  Now, one of the most important things you can do if you want to be on top of your work is to maintain flexibility. Flexibility means you can direct your attention where it needs to be when it needs to be there. If you cram your calendar full of tasks, you immediately lose that flexibility. It also means if one or two of your meetings overrun, you get held up in a traffic jam or something goes wrong with your company's CRM system, your carefully curated tasks and appointments are destroyed.  Now that in itself is not really a disaster, you can reschedule all those tasks, but now you've just added another step. Instead of being able to pick the tasks you are able to do in the moment—responding to your messages while being stuck in a traffic jam, for instance, you begin to panic about how much time you are losing and all the work you will now have to reschedule on your calendar.  This also means you calendar loses it's power. If you schedule tasks to be done at say, 2pm but you are running behind so you ignore those tasks, what's the point of your calendar? You took the time to put those tasks there but you just ignore them, what's the point?  Because you are human, you need flexibility. You want to be able to choose the right work for the way you are feeling and what's on your mind at that moment.  Then there is the human factor. You are not a machine. When planning your day, you will be thinking you will be fully alert, energetic and focused. When you are working the day, you will be tired, distracted and suffering from diminishing energy levels. What you really need is to take a break, but no! You have tasks to complete because you calendar tells you at 2pm you have to spend the next ninety minutes doing your tasks.  Finally, when you look at your calendar and you see almost ever minute of your day taken up with appointments and tasks it can be demoralising. It just drags you down and leaves you feeling busy, stressed and overwhelmed. Not a great state to be in if you want to make the right decisions about what to do with a clear mind.  One way to prevent this from happening, and I alluded to this in my YouTube video, is to operate a time blocking system in your calendar.  What this means is if you have a number of similar tasks to perform, you can block time out for doing this kind of work. For instance, let's say you need an hour a day for doing your admin and an hour a day to deal with your messages and emails. You could put time blocks in for these.  I do this every day. At 4pm I have an hour time block for communications. This means I have a dedicated amount of time each day for managing my messages. At 4pm, I will sit down and clear my action folders. Sometimes most of that time is spent in email, other days it might be mainly spend in my messaging apps.  When I start the day, I have no idea how many communication tasks I will have, but I don't need to worry because I know I have an hour to deal with them later that day.  I also have an admin hour blocked in my calendar each day. This hour is for dealing with any administrative tasks I need to do for my accountant, or clients that require a particular type of tax receipt.  I also use time blocks for the kind of work I do. For example, I do a lot of writing, so I have three, two hour blocks in my calendar. One on Monday, one on Tuesday and one on Friday. In my task manager, I have a label for all the writing tasks I have to do and all I need do is search for any writing tasks dated for that day and I can choose which ones to do. I have the flexibility. If I am feeling great, full of energy and focused I will pick the hardest ones. If I am not feeling great, lacking in focus and tired, I will choose the easier ones. I know I have more writing blocks in the week so it really doesn't matter which ones I do.  I do the same with project and my audio/visual work. I have time blocked in the week for working on these tasks. I also make sure that any focused work (writing and project work) is done in the morning—when I am at my most focused.  However, the key here is blocking time out for the type of work, not the individual tasks. This ensures I maintain flexibility and can decide what to do based on my physical and mental state at that time.  It also means my calendar never looks overwhelming. You want to ensure there are sufficient gaps between time blocks so you have the flexibility to take a break when needed and pick up anything urgent that may have come in that day.  Using this method means I am only managing tasks in one place. When I do my daily planning, I can see on my calendar I have a two hour writing block the next day and I can then choose which writing tasks should be done in that time from my writing list in my task manager. If things change overnight, I have the flexibility to change the tasks around the next day if needs be.  If you go back to the COD principles (Collect, organise and do), you want to be spending a little time as possible organising so you maximise your doing time. I am collecting tasks in my task manager all day, and I will spend around 95% of my work day doing the work. This leaves me with around twenty-minutes each day for the organising and planning. All I need do is look at my calendar for the next day, see what time block I have—lets say an audio visual time block, I can then date any tasks related to audio visual for the next day.  When the next day arrives, I can then decide which of those tasks I will do based on my energy levels, what is important and what deadlines I have.  If you are trying to manage individual tasks on your calendar (as well as your task manager) not only are you now duplicating, but you have just given yourself a lot more organising to do.  I hope that clarifies things for you, Steve. Thank you for your question and it just remains for me now to wish you all a very very productive week.

This broadcast is the property of Western Capital Media. About Steve Schuyler, CEO of https://java-twist.com/ Meet Steve Schuyler | Owner/Founder JavaTwist We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Schuyler and we've shared our conversation below. Hi Steve, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?JavaTwist began as a seed in my brain while I was still running a small coffee shop. We would introduce new drinks to our customers all the time and I was selling the drink everyone knows which is an “Arnold Palmer”–Iced Tea and Lemonade. I ran out of iced tea one day and decided to try Cold Brewed coffee and Lemonade together and it was a hit. I looked for the drink on the market, but it did not exist. We started JavaTwist because I wanted to drink this product and had lots of friends and family asking me for it as well. Fast forward 4 years JavaTwist has 5 flavors on the market with more coming. We use clean ingredients and pair cold brewed coffee with fruit juice. It is shelf stable, brewed in Wisconsin, made in small batches, and has been shipped all over the US. Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?JavaTwist is a small startup company that pairs cold brewed coffee with fruit juice together. We are unique in the marketplace today giving the customer a truly unique experience with coffee. I started the company by bootstrapping it myself. I took a page out of the beer industry using small scale equipment to help me pasteurize and bottle the drinks to make them shelf stable. Covid was a tremendous challenge being able to give out samples when we did markets and events. Instead of giving small samples, I chose to give out whole bottles. It was costly, but it allowed me see reactions of my customers while getting the name out. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you'd want to take them around to?Depending on the time of year….I would take them to the Wisconsin State Fair. From food vendors to local merchants selling their wares, to all of the animals and agriculture, as well as all of the great musical concerts. Overall a great time and worth the visit. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?JavaTwist was founded with the notion of creating unique drinks that are different than the ordinary. That being said we have had so much help from the beginning like: setting up a LLC, design and logo help, brand awareness through micro-influencers, small local stores believing in the products, my family who has been so supportive, and great customers who have been so supportive as a small startup. Today I'm going to explore with you the principles of leadership comfort, and if that supports growth and results or how in fact, it might hold a team back, but first, it's Leadership Hacker News.   The Leadership Hacker News Everywhere you turn in the news at the moment, you'll bump into a story about Covid-19, or commonly known as Coronavirus. The question we need to ask is, does leadership or has leadership played a part, in either its spread or containment? Just like with a national or international crisis like coronavirus, when disaster happens, it's not about the disaster, but how you respond and you react to it. Some say the World Health Organization was too slow from December to February, in giving clarity and direction and insight as to how to contain the virus, whereas others look to the leadership of China to over trade on goodwill and to damp down its severity, both of which can play an important part in how people respond to a situation. So if you think this is a leadership hack that we need to hack into, send us your insights. Comment on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, and let's get the debate going.   Let's go to our first hack of the show. It's retired US Navy captain and best-selling author of Turn the Ship Around and Leadership is Language, David Marquet.   David: Steve, my top leadership hack. Start your question with how. How sure are you? Not, are you sure?    Steve: Thanks David. What a neat idea, and a great way to find out better data. Are you sure? Yes, or no? Bad data? How sure are you? This means that someone's got respond with a level of certainty or assurance, which gives you as a leader an opportunity to ask more questions. So, let's go to our next hack.   Andy: This is Andy Brogan from Easier Inc. My hack for leaders is to stop thinking of leadership as on a continuum with followership. Leadership isn't about creating followership; it's about creating fellowship, and in that regard, leaders can come from anywhere. It's not a role. It's an activity. Perhaps, more correctly, it's two activities. The first one is the act of leadership, being about ensuring that what really matters really matters here. And the second one being that of leadership is about growing fellowship, and that means that what really matters here has to include what really matters to each other.   Steve: Great words, Andy. I really love that whole principle of fellowship. It's about creating an environment where there is an absolute connectivity with the people who you lead and the people who you work with, and the whole principle of fellowship versus followership I think most people can really resonate with. Superb stuff!   So up next, we have coaching catalyst and leadership expert, Byron Lowe. What's your leadership hack, Byron?    Byron: Hi, Steve. My number one leadership hack is turning thoughts into tools. I believe anyone can learn how to turn their most useful thoughts into tools that can help them grow, solve problems, live the life they want, and experience meaningful and fulfilling work, and it all begins with our thoughts.       Steve: Thanks Byron. What a really interesting philosophy, and we all have our faults, and we all have the ability to influence others, but do we genuinely think of our thoughts as being tools in our kitbag as leaders? So we're going to have one more leadership hack and then we're going to turn our thoughts to think about how we deal with comfort, and whether it helps us or holds us back, but first is over to Tony Burkinshaw, Harley Street cognitive hypnotherapist with his leadership hack.    Tony:  Hi Steve, it's Tony Burkinshaw. When sharing visions, I think vision is a really important part of leadership, but in terms of vision, making sure that each member of your team, the team you're leading, can share that vision. Not everybody does visual equally well so the name ‘vision' is a bit of a misnomer. So be prepared to share your vision in a variety of different ways, to make sure that each member of your team is fully on board with it, and can absorb it in their own preferential way.   Steve: It's a great call, Tony. So, we all see the world, feel the world and experience the world in different ways, and vision by default appeals to those people who have a vision or a seeing experience of the world in the way they represent the world, and therefore we need to be thoughtful of those people who are more auditory or more kinesthetic, and need that feeling and sense. So in describing a vision, make sure that you've described it visually, auditory, and with some feeling too.    So, I want to tell you a little bit of the story as to why comfort could be a problem in us achieving great performance. Just think back on your last 24 hours. You woke up and I suspect you followed many routines - took your coffee, went to the same train station, or airport, took the same route if you're driving. When you get to work, you find there is a little routine or pattern of behaviors that you do throughout the day, most of which might be unconscious, but we've created this bubble. The bubble is there in our life and our work too, and it's a bubble of routine and comfort. We are creatures of comfort and creatures of habit.    However, when we're looking to achieve high performance, holding us back is the enemy called comfort. Why is that such a problem, I hear you cry? Well, feeling good and feeling assured is right, but comfort creates habits and habits don't look for opportunities, unless we create new habits that force us into new behaviors. Perfect example - I'm not a broadcaster, but I am today. So the start of this Leadership Hacker podcast for me is me moving outside of my comfort zone and trying new things and testing new ways so that I can help others broaden their awareness of what leadership is.   I want to share a story with you about one of my childhood heroes. As a young boy growing up, I was a big racing fan. There was a Formula One World Champion at the time called Mario Andretti, and year on year he managed to find new track records, and new ways of driving, and engineers and spectators alike were really spellbound by the way he used to control his car, and I remember as a young child watching him being interviewed, and in one particular interview he was asked, so Mario, how is it that you find new ways of doing things behind the wheel of a car? And his response was, when I find myself being too much in control and feeling too comfortable, I know I'm not pushing myself hard enough.    And we can all look around our towns and our cities, and when we look back 5 years and 10 years ago, there were stores on the corner that are no longer there, that were vibrant businesses that were no longer there. And when we transfer that to sports teams who are sometimes top of the leagues and top of their games and then don't sustain it, when you dig deep, what you find is complacency and comfort. Only way to change new things and find new ways of working is to get hold of your discomfort. And being really clear about what it is you want to achieve and how you're going to do that.     What's most important is doing nothing creates more comfort and more satisfaction, and we need to find a way as leaders to help our team move away from what they know to be true and comfortable and to help them explore new, exciting and alluring ways of working, and in doing so you could find great performance. So, let's hear from one of our other friends of the show. Who's up next with their leadership hack?       Govert: So… Govert van Sandwijk here, and I've got the following leadership hack and this goes for leaders on all levels so it doesn't matter whether you're a team leader, a frontline manager, or the Chief Executive Officer. You find yourself in front of your team during a team meeting. You start to think, hey, why is my team so passive? And actually, you're a little bit irritated.    As soon as you as a leader start to have those feelings, then basically, you have to check your own behavior. Sit down, shut up, ask a question which will for sure activate the team. So again, the leadership hack is when you start to feel, hey, my team is too passive. Why are they not being more participative in the meeting? Why are they not saying anything else? Check your own behavior. Shut up, sit down, ask a question, and let them become active.   Steve: Thanks for that hack, Govert. What this tells us guys is we are all human, and we will all have a natural neurological response, and what Govert's sharing is that strategy for dealing with that moment where that chimp inside us, or the amygdala in our limbic system has triggered a neurological threat response in us, take some time out, ask a question. It allows us to regain our cognitive awareness of how we can respond and respond in the right way. So let's go to another leadership hack. Who's up next? Andrew: Hi.. This is Andrew Bryant, Author of Self Leadership, how to become a more successful effective and efficient leader from the inside out; and of course my top leadership hack is to practice self-leadership which I define as, “the practice of intentionally influencing your thinking, feeling and actions towards your objectives. You see, self-leadership contains self-mastery, that ability to move yourself towards your vision, and alignment with your values. You see, when you practice self-leadership and personal mastery, you become an influencer and a more effective leader, so this is my top leadership hack from Andrew Bryant – the self-leadership coach.   Thank you Andrew. He's right isn't he, the reason why you are listening to this Podcast today is part self-mastery which we can also define as life long learning. The more we learn, the better leader we become, the better leader we become,  the more we have to give and offer others.   Now out next guest has become renowned for creating simplicity   Simon: Hello, Steve. This is Simon Tyler, coach, facilitator and author, author of The Attitude Book, Keep it Simple Book, The Impact Book, The Simple Way, and I'm here today to talk to you about my hack you've asked me to come up with. There's no hack like your hack.    There's something about the whole world of all these wonderful ideas that come at us that we pick them all up or drawn to them, we think we want to do something about them. But in truth, the ones that we need are really appropriate and curtailed and personal just to us. So, I say again, there's no hack like your hack. But if I was to land on one thing, Steve, it would be awareness. Anything you can do to wake up your awareness, to heighten what you know about you and notice about you, the better it will be for you. And as you go through any exercise to heighten your awareness, it's not about what you do with it. Simply the awareness can be enough. First, pause more often. That means in your speech, in your day, in your working week, even if it's just for a minute, or an hour every few days. It's just those gaps and in those gaps is that moment when you can slow stuff down, and will start to notice stuff around you and about you. And I look forward to helping you and any of the people that listen to this podcast heighten their awareness.    Steve: And awareness is a real key attribute for great leaders, isn't it? The perception of a situation or effect of being able to adjust our style, so that we can be the best we can be. And to our next hack, we go to friend of the show, John Spence.    John: Hey, Steve, this is John Spence. And my leadership hack is to be curious, to ask thoughtful questions, focused questions, and then be an intense listener. If you hire great people, which you should be, then you want to take every opportunity you can to get their feedback, best ideas, suggestions, to get their help, which will help you grow your business and become an even better leader. So that's my leadership hack. Steve.   Steve: That's a great message, John. Thank you, and for me curious is about wanting to learn, wanting to learn more about my people, wanting to learn more about my clients, my environment, my community, and actually just learning about me too on that, where curiosity can stimulate things in me to ask questions about my capabilities and can I do and can't I do, and what's causing me to think that way. So great message. So, let's get to our next hack.    I want to introduce Michelle Boxx, CEO at Boxxbury Business, Speaker, Columnist, and all-around business advocate, Hi, Michelle.   Michelle: Hey, Steve, this is Michelle Box, the blonde fixer. My leadership hack would be to get aware of how your team processes, whether it be internally or externally. It's not that the quiet person in the room doesn't have anything to offer. They just need a few minutes in the meeting to process internally before they speak up. Creating that space within a meeting allows everyone to be heard and the best ideas to come forward.   Steve: And that's great, and in my experience, the best ideas are ones that just take a little bit of nuancing and a little bit of thinking. And if you have people in your team who are sound in their ideas, they're being thoughtful, they're being introspective, it's our job as leaders too to make sure that we're involving them, and being thoughtful. Keep an eye out for the body language, the nonverbal cues. The book tells us people have something to say and it's important that we help them say it. So, I'm now going to introduce you to a future guest and friend of the show, Michael G. Rogers. Welcome to the show, Michael.   Michael: If I was to provide one leadership hack, it would be to really care about your people. And the reason why is because when you care about your people, they will care about their work.  There was a Gallup survey done, where people were asked whether their supervisor or anyone else at work cared about them. Only four out of ten strongly agree with that statement. That means six out of ten people don't feel cared about or at least had the perception of not feeling cared about at work. We have to bridge that gap. Perception of reality are not the same thing here. If I ask the leader whether they care about their people, I'm sure every one of them would say they would, but that's not how employees feel. So we have to get to a point where we can demonstrate that and employees can feel that because again, care about your people and they will care about their work.   Steve: Such a simple message, Michael, but I wonder how many of us as leaders take the conscious time out to evaluate how we're caring about people, and ultimately caring about people helps create trust. The more trust you have, the more honest and more candid conversations you have, and the more of those conversations you have, the easier is to cut through complexity and drive great results too.    Okay, we're going to go to our final hack for today's show. I'm going to take you to Chief Delighting Officer, Avi Liran.   Avi: My name is Avi Liran, and my leadership hack tip is actually starting with a question. What is the one thing, one action, one verb, one mind-state way of life, that if you do that one thing - unconditionally, consistently, continuously - it will be the quickest way for you to earn trust, gain influence, be accepted and feel a sense of belonging, even if you're very new, and feel happy together with the people around you? Well, the answer is very simple. It's contribution, and the difference between contribution and giving is contribution adds value that the other people need, so go, contribute and make a better world for yourself and others.   Steve: Avi, thank you for giving us that delightful message around contribution. I think it's incumbent on us all as leaders to really create value when we contribute to others. So hey, it would be unfair of me to leave you today without me passing on my contribution of my lifelong leadership and dedication to learning about leaders and leadership. And I find that there are four essential ingredients in leading others. not the only ingredients, but they are essential ones.   All great leaders I've ever worked with, and for, have been great communicators. They learned to adapt their communication style. I call them communication adapters. They're able to flex in an instant how they can change their tone, their pitch and pace, so that they can build rapport, affinity and still be relevant. I find that all great leaders are authentic. They just demonstrate who they really are and what they're really about. They don't mimic, they don't copy, they are just who they are, and knowledgeable but not overly knowledgeable, about the business they're running. Too many leaders spend so much time immersing themselves into the detail of the complexity of their business, it gives them no room for asking crazy questions.   And the most important ingredient that I find in leaders that binds people together - empathy! Empathy and understanding about what people do, how they do it, their motivations and their reasons, creates the real context and cohesiveness in helping others lead too. Communication. Authenticity. Knowledge, and Empathy.   So at the beginning of the show, I said to stick around to find out how you can get a copy of my book, The Leadership Cake. We're giving away 10 signed first edition copies and 10 e-copies, and here's how to do it.     First things first, you need to subscribe to our podcast. That's number one. Number two, we've got a number of different mediums and social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, YouTube, etc. Go ahead and subscribe or like two of those, and in your social media channels just say ‘today I listened to the Leadership Hacker podcast today, and the key thing that I learned was…. whatever that was.    So just to remind you three things - subscribe, join our social media tribe, and in there share, I listened to the leadership hacker podcast today, and I learned this. We'll take a straw poll from all the people that do so, and we'll announce the winners and post those books out first-class around the world, next week.   So, we're coming to the end of our very first ever leadership hacker podcast. I just wanted to say a massive thank you to the guests that appeared on today's show. You'll be in for some more of those as the weeks and months progress.   I generally want to say a heartfelt thanks for taking time out of your day to listening too. It's about 10AM on a Sunday, and I am sitting on my balcony, scanning the dating sites.  "You have a new Match!" pops up on Match.com. I take a look. I'm pretty sure I have not seen or "liked" this woman, so I am not sure how we are a "Match". Maybe I liked her after a few too many Manhattans. "Swiping" or "Liking" seems very mood dependent. Some are a no-brainer, but others I could be on the fence about. If I'm feeling pretty good at that moment, I will pass on them; if I'm not, I might just take a shot. With the exception of Bumble, either party can initiate an in-app chat. Bumble gives that power exclusively to the women, which I originally thought was a good idea. But some women have told me that there is no way they are going to initiate. Regardless of the app, guys have to do more work. We have to do all of the clicking, swiping and liking, and women get to sit back and react... or not. It's not that guys don't get the occasional ping from the other side of the wall, but it's rare, so we swipe and like. "Hi Vanessa! I see we are both into cycling :)" I initiate. Bing! "You matched with Vanessa!" "Hi Steve, yes I loooove cycling!" she replies. "Awesome! Where do you like to ride?" I send. No reply... ever. It used to annoy me, back when I first started, but I now realize it is just the nature of the ecosystem. Each of us in this world have our own lives, and we are all at different stages of interest around dating. More often than men, women may have a few bad experiences and then drop off. They usually pop back up later... a little more jaded than they were before. Communication seems to suddenly end, for no apparent reason, at all stages. Was it something I said? No, I would never say anything that would cause a woman to stop talking to me. I know many men do... probably because many are just fishing for sex. I think Tinder probably lowered the conversation level, even though it has since been homogenized to be like all the other apps. I find myself adopting the communication etiquette of women, which seems to be primary based on not wanting to look too eager, or desperate. For example, if you were the last one to send a message.. you should not be the next one to. If it goes unreplied to... you probably have your answer. The exception is the machine-gun texter, which is me.  I am the opposite of what I call the cannon texter. I was chatting with a woman once, who would send single texts that were four pages long. She obviously took her time to think about a lot of things to say at once. Maybe she did not want to be interrupted, or sidetracked. I'm the opposite, I click send at the end of each thought, then realize I had another thought, usually about four times in a row. It's always fun when you have two machine-gun texters going at it, the conversations tend to get jumbled up. "Darn, my flight is delayed! :(" she texts. "But, I get to see my daughter when I get home :)" she texts. "Well that sucks :(" I reply. "Why did you say that?" she texts, "I was responding to your previous text." I reply. So you see how that goes. Conversations abruptly ending is part of the natural order of dating. I'm not really complaining, if none of them ended, I would be on my phone non-stop. You ultimately learn that you need to have a certain number of them going on, knowing that most will stop, but enough won't, that you can actually meet people. But abrupt endings don't stop once you meet people. Nothing really matters until that first meeting, everything else is just bullshit leading up to it. That first meeting can go well, or end in a "He/She is just not that into you". While I have heard about it happening, I have not yet been on any date that ended in the middle of it. I will take that as a good sign. But I have been "ghosted" a couple of times afterwards. I'm a gentleman, if I did not feel any spark, I don't just ghost, I will more likely send a message like, "Hey, thanks for meeting last night. I think we can both agree that neither of us felt the spark we had hoped for. I wish you luck in your search." Regardless of how she may have been feeling about me, I want to let her save face as well. Match keeps all your chats until you delete them, and I was looking back at some of my first initial messages from 3 months ago, when I started. I have clearly improved on my initial message skills since then. But still, lots of unanswered messages. The funny thing is, those women are all still here...

I have not been out here very long; the dating scene that is. Obviously, being a rookie, I signed up for all the dating apps. I was remembering my grandfathers' motto about prescription pills... "If one is good, then three are better". He died young. Across the dating apps, you see many of the same women, who are also exploring their app options. My friends warned me not to sign up for Tinder, so of course, I immediately signed up for it. It's definitely shady around the edges, but they are all pretty much the same... photos and limited information. I'm not sure what you can tell about a woman from a few photos and bullet points. But you do start to learn how the "system" functions. Step one, I start "liking" a few profiles. A couple of days go by... nothing is happening. Maybe I am not doing it right, and my "likes" are not going through. I mean, I know I am a good catch. I try "liking" a few more... nothing... not even any views. This is starting to feel like a waste of time. Maybe "likes" are not enough, I add a message, "Hi!". There we go, now I am getting a few views... but no replies. I actually read the complete profile, or at least what is provided, which sometimes is not much. I decide to send a longer message, "Hi Claire, I also enjoy bike riding!" Bingo. "Hi Steve, where do you ride?" Someone should write a tutorial for women on how to create their profiles. A single profile photo consisting of a flower, may have some important meaning, but as a guy, the meaning is lost on me. Photos of you lying in bed, or in skimpy outfits will probably get you a lot of attention, we all know men are visual beings, but I don't think most women are seeking the kind of guy who only responds to that. It feels... desperate. There is also some irony in posting a suggestive photo, and then saying "No Hook-ups". We are but men, and just not that smart. Bullshit! Profiles are mostly bullshit. Photos from high school, weird angles, filters on every photo or no pictures of you standing. The only people who like photos of women with cutesy filters... are other women. As a guy, I don't need 20 photos either. If I see 20 photos, there is going to be one you wanted to share, maybe because it was taken at a hip place, but where you just don't look your best. I will assume you probably look no better than your worst photo. I'm not bothered by photos where your ex is cut off, it shows how you looked when you were happy with a man. Four photos is plenty, provided they are recent. Neither of us benefits from seeing how you used to look.... it's not like that is coming back. Women seem to be more honest in their words, than their photos. Still, turnoffs for me, and I assume for most men, are statements like: "Trying this again", "My friend put me up to this", "Don't waste my time", "No Hookups", "Seeking marriage minded only", "I'll fill this in later", "Seeking that special someone (puke)". I also don't really need a detailed breakdown of who you are looking for, my profiles' job is to provide a start on that. What your detailed description of your ideal man does give us, are things we can say to you, that we know you want to hear, true or not. I would prefer to read about who you are, rather than who I should be. Women also tend to be very specific. Height 5'-10 to 6'. Really? 2" is your full acceptable range? At the end of the day, tall/short, skinny/heavy, old/young, etc. will all be eclipsed in significance by "real" chemistry. I recently learned a new term, "sapiosexual" which is a person who finds intelligence sexually attractive or arousing. Back to "Hi Steve!". Am I the only one who is tiring of the monotonous first dance steps? Her, Morning: "Hi Steve!" Me, Late Afternoon: "Hi Alexis, how are you today?" Her, Midnight: "Great, how was your day?" Me, Next Afternoon: "Not bad. You got any fun plans for the weekend?" Her, 1 AM: "I might go to the beach with friends." Me, Next Morning: "Sounds like fun." Her, Next Morning: "Yes." Me, Mid-Afternoon: "I hear it may rain this weekend." Her, Midnight: "Noooo :(" Me, Early Afternoon: "We have been talking for four days now, do you mind if we move this fascinating conversation to text?"

This episode is from the vault and was first released January 15, 2018. This might be a hard question for some people, but let's face it, what does your retirement life look like? Steve Cousins is one of our listeners. (Hi Steve!) After graduating from college Steve joined an oil company at a refinery in Arkansas where he worked as an engineer, manager and eventually as the VP and General Manager.  He stayed with the same company for his entire career and remained at the same location. Last year Steve retired upon turning 60 and immediately stepped into a retirement career designed to be part-time, low stress and lots of fun.  After a year, the plan is working great!  I wanted to discuss with him his choice in a “semi-retirement”. “You Shouldn't run away from something, you have to run towards something.” Steve always thought he would be working until he was 70 or later because he really enjoyed his job. The last few years, things changed he did not enjoy it very much, but he hung on because frankly, he was afraid of retirement. There were several reasons he was afraid of retirement and I think a lot of people can relate. * Steve thought if he was leaving work because he didn't enjoy it anymore that didn't necessarily mean he would enjoy retirement either. * He also looked at the compensation he was getting from work and it was painful for him to walk away from that after working so hard to get to that point in his career. * His job was his identity, and he didn't want to lose that Working to feel useful and productive in your retirement life Even before retiring from his job, Steve decided what he wanted his retirement life to look like. He wanted to feel useful and productive. He started his side gigs which are pretty cool! * Contract Lobbying * Expert Witness Work * Trade Association representation Side gigs or semi-retirement not for you? Steve says, focus on volunteer work. He has a ton of volunteer positions! (As we tend to hear a lot, he is just as busy if not even busier than when he was working) His volunteer work includes: * Chair the Board of Trustees for the local community college * Local Hospital Clinic that helps people who are uninsured or underinsured * State and local Chamber of Commerce * State University mentoring students * On the board of a local group called 50 for the future, where they solve problems in the city It's not all work for Steve. He also spends time with his wife. They enjoy doing a lot of things together like running, hiking, off-road riding, discovering hidden waterfalls, and many more activities. Now that they are retired, they can spend a lot more time together but still spend time doing their own things. Steve's advice from one listener of the show to another: You should marry someone better than yourself and invest a lot of time in your relationship because if everything else went away and you still have each other, you will still be fine. Widen your horizon's. Don't just do your job, volunteer to do other things. Reach outside of your comfort zone and practice public speaking because it helps boost your confidence. What great advice Steve! Did you plan your retirement life? How did you do it? Leave a comment below and let us know! Hi Steve and Shirley, I really need your advice. I'm a 32 year old woman and my husband is 37. When we first got married, our sex life was amazing. About three years into our marriage, intimacy became an issue. My husband started making excuses for not wanting to do it. He never wanted to have sex anymore. Also, nokia kauft withings. Klasse! ICH WILL NOKIA ZURÜCK! Hi Steve, you're welcome! Thank you for letting us know how important the Pulse Wave Velocity feature for you. Have a nice day! -Charles — Withings Support (@AskWithings) 10. Oben stehende Antwort auf meine Frage Hey @WithingsEN , saw your latest Body Cardio Scale video today on #YouTube! Does that mean you will bring this function also back to the "old" scale, where #nokia had to disable this feature for you?@AskWithings — Steve Schutzbier (@aviationsteve) 8. We're continuing on with our massive Q&A this weekend on the Cabral #HouseCall! I hope you enjoyed yesterday show and you're ready to tackle another round of our community questions! Cheryl: After 25 years with autoimmune problems, I'm hearing about a new cause centering around the Epstein Barr Virus, which I had . That in effect, if you get rid of the Epstein Barr Virus, which stays hidden within cell barriers in the body , you can create wellness. That in fact, the body is not out of sync attacking itself, but is actually attacking an invading cell. Especially is noted in Hashimotos which I have, where this Epstein Barr Virus attaches itself . Do you have information on these new findings and might this be a breakthrough and how do we go about ridding ourselves of residual Epstein Barr cells. Thank you    Ellen: How do you determine so many of the recommendations you provide in your personalized weight loss analysis simply by analyzing saliva and small blood droplets. My Integrative docs have always taken a lot of blood work. Thank you   Anon: Hi Stephen! I have dealt with interstitial cystitis for a year now and it is terrible! Since I was diagnosed, I have been eating very clean (no wheat, dairy, soy or refined sugar) and have been trying to incorporate more fruits/veggies into my diet. I have definitely improved but I still have much more work to go...any advice on how I can get rid of it for good and stay healthy? Thank you so much!   Natalie: Hi Dr. Cabral! I'm curious what your thoughts are on Oral Allergy Syndrome? Is there a way to combat it/lessen the symptoms/reverse it? Thank you! Natalie   Lindsey: Hi it's that time of the year where I get hay fever! Please can you help me with a natural remedy for this so I don't have to take antihistamines everyday! Many thanks! We love you in the UK - come and visit us soon!    Brooke: Hi Dr. Cabral, First, thank you for providing quality information for free to the world daily! My question is, do tattoos damage the body? If so, how? What are the long term effects? thank you for your time, Brooke Elise   Lauren: Hi Steve, I have a few questions in regards to when to take certain supplements and if it matters. I loved your podcast on top 10 supplements and just purchased the magnesium as well as the D3. I have deficient in B12 and Folate/Iron so I was going to purchase the Activated B complex as well. Can you please let me know if i should take these at specific times? I currently take D3 right before breakfast as well as my probotic and magnesium at night. Also, do you know when your nutritional support protein shake will be back in stock? Thanks! Hi Steve, Thanks for answering my questions in regard to magnesium. I was wondering in the one you suggested, I see the inactive ingredient is hypromellose. Is this something I should be weary of? I have read a lot of different things but it is hard to follow and fully understand. Thanks   Thanks for tuning in and I hope you enjoyed the Q&A and all the tips added in along the way! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/436 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral

Olá, amigos do English Experts! (Steve) Oh! Great to be here. (Ana) ...a little question here: How to use ING in English? And that’s another big topic, I guess. (Steve) That’s an excellent question. It’s an excellent question. And I have something to say about that, because I have heard some people trying to imitate the ING sound in relaxed American speech, so they’ll say ‘workin’, ‘talkin’. Which is great, you know, when we speak informally in American speech we use that. The danger is to use that all the time. And I have heard some people, you know, they try to speak like a native speaker and that becomes their normal, you know? So they say “Hi Steve, I’m workin’ on this and then I’m doin’ that”, and, I mean, here in North America we use that to kind of sound cute, to sound informal sometimes, but, you know, not all the time. It’s, it’s something that, you know, just like in Portuguese, you wouldn’t be at work saying to your boss “Can I have some dinheirinho?”, you know. (Ana) Oh, OK. (Steve) So that’s the equivalent in English. You should really try to pronounce the ING sound in English… semi-formal or formal contexts. (Ana) OK. Can you say the two versions for us? (Steve) Sure. “I’m working”. So you can hear this… it’s more complete, ING, you know? It’s more alongated. And “I’m workin’” So maybe that guy, that business executive… He is working on Wall Street, and maybe there’s somebody who’s workin’, workin’ in the streets. So you really wanna be careful, ’cause as I said, I have noticed some non-native speakers trying to sound like a native speaker and using workin’ and doin’ for everything. Be careful. (Ana) Alright! Hello ATA Listeners, the question I present to you today is how you pay tribute to a character like Bond, James Bond who has graced the silver screen for 50 years with Secret Agent adventures that has spawned generations of fans and brought the male side of families together? Well, here at ATA I figured we could try something different for our show to celebrate five decades of James Bond on the silver screen. At first I thought about doing  commentaries on my favorite Bond films but we did that already with the movies leading up to The Avengers.  In other words, I began to envision something much bigger. Something that would be worthy of a character who has spanned generations, a retrospective on James Bond discussing everything that has to do with the man who many believe to be the pride of Her Majesty's Secret Service. ATA has certainly had its outstanding Retro Reviews but this was going to be the end-all be-all of podcast tributes to Mr. Bond covering everything from his on-screen creation and history to the characters most recent incarnation in the box office breaking smash hit Skyfall starring the outstanding Daniel Craig. However, in going to the ATA Corps I ran into the issue of my talented cohosts not  feeling that they had enough background on 007 to do a retrospective, so I ended up calling one of the biggest James Bond fans I know, Agent 008 1/2 with the flaming pants himself, Kyle Franchi. And together we were able make my dream a reality by creating James Bond 50th Anniversary Tribute Podcast that was made worthy of its title through us talking about a variety of topics such as  a in-depth review on Skyfall, an analysis of Bond actors/villains/women, an oral history on the Bond Film Franchise and much more including stories about our breaking and entering loving friend Steve. Hi Steve! Yes like it or not you're going to be referenced in this podcast but it's only because we love you and associate you to James Bond as much as Sean Connery. Anyway, in going back to the podcast there was so much great content stuffed into this 50th Anniversary Tribute we had to make it into a four part podcast miniseries beginning with the episode that's posted below but for For Your Eyes Only is a brief dossier explaining what's in store for our James Bond 50th Anniversary Tribute Podcast over the next four missions or episodes!!! Mission One: Explains how Kyle and I became fascinated with the James Bond Franchise and gives a in-depth review on the most recently released film starring Daniel Craig as Ian Fleming's James Bond, the Sam Mendes directed film Skyfall. Mission Two: Kyle and I give a report card to each of the actors who have played James Bond along with talking about our favorite Bond Girls and Villains. Mission Three: Kyle and I give a full-blown oral history retrospective on the James Bond Film Franchise from Dr. No to Skyfall going behind the scenes on its triumphs and tribulations including the debacle surrounding the unofficial Bond film Never Say Never Again starring the great Sean Connery. Mission Four: The podcast miniseries wraps itself up with Kyle and I taking a look at the various James Bond video games that attributed to success for the modern era of the Bond Franchise including one of the most popular games of all time N64's Goldeneye. We also discuss what we think is next for the Bond Film Franchise with the two films slated to be released after Skyfall, providing several crackpot theories on how to salvage the Quantum/Mr. White story arc that fell apart in the rush to make Quantum of Solace. Alright, now that you have your objectives it's time to stop by Q Branch to retrieve your weapon, fire up the Ashton Martin DB5 and listen to Part 1 of this outstanding podcast that's shaken but not stirred to be something that Bond fans everywhere will love!
