Building Financial Foundations Early: How young couples and singles can set the groundwork for financial success that will serve them for life. Embracing the “Bougie on a Budget” Philosophy: Loving the finer things in life, guilt-free! Learn how to build a budget that includes your self-care without sacrificing your financial goals. Money Mindfulness vs. Mindlessness: Recognizing and stopping mindless spending, setting specific budgets for expenses like dining out, and being intentional with every dollar. Using “Bank Account Balancing” to Simplify Your Budgeting: How to automate your finances with separate bank accounts for bills, groceries, personal spending, and savings, so you know where every dollar is going. Ditching Credit Dependency: Shana and Vanessa explain the benefits of being your own bank, building savings instead of credit, and other ways to achieve big goals without relying on credit scores. Communication & Money in Relationships: Tips for keeping open, honest money conversations in relationships—turning budgeting into teamwork, not tension. 1. You can enjoy the “bougie” things that bring you joy and still make progress on financial goals. 2. The Power of Automated Finances Automating transfers for different spending categories (like gas, groceries, and personal fun money) makes budgeting simple and empowers you to be intentional with your money. 3. Building Wealth Without Relying on Credit Credit cards are not a necessity for building financial security. Shana and Vanessa share strategies to save intentionally for future expenses and emergencies, eliminating the need for credit dependency. 4. Budgeting with Your Partner as a Team Building a financial plan together not only strengthens your financial health but also builds trust and clarity in relationships. It's like this story about an eight-year-old boy. Imagine I received an upsetting email from one of my business partners. I really wanted to respond angrily, but then mindfulness kicked in. I realized that reacting like that would lead to a pointless argument. So, I decided to let it go and sleep on it. By morning, my partner apologized, and the issue resolved itself without my intervention. Mindfulness helps me avoid knee-jerk reactions and provides more choices. It's like in the investment world when we panic and sell everything during a market drop. Mindfulness creates space for other options beyond our initial, rigid reactions. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is super basic, right? We can chat about money all day, but you know what? Breathing matters too. It's like finding contentment in something as simple as taking a breath. I call it the “money breath” because it helps when I'm shopping and anxiety hits. In those moments, our breath can get shallow, denying our brain much-needed oxygen. We need a pause to widen our perspective and consider more choices. The money breath involves exhaling longer than inhaling, and science says it calms our nervous system, shifting us into a more relaxed state. That's when our money smarts kick in, which, by the way, we all have; we just need to tap into them. Suggested Resources Book: A Path With Heart: A Guide Through the Perils and Promises of Spiritual Life by Jack Kornfield Book: Real Happiness by Sharon Salzberg Book: Radical Acceptance by Tara Brock App: 10 Percent Happier App: Waking Up by Sam Harris Bullying Story Spencer Sherman shared a meaningful story about how mindfulness can make a big difference, even in challenging situations. He mentioned two important nonprofit organizations he's involved with, both dedicated to improving school environments. One of them, called Mindful Schools, shared a powerful story about a boy dealing with aggression. During recess, this boy felt the urge to punch another kid. But instead of acting on that anger, he took a moment to breathe and simply observe his emotions. This act of mindfulness allowed him to acknowledge his negative feelings without letting them control his actions. It's a key aspect of mindfulness: recognizing harmful emotions but choosing not to be controlled by them. Spencer believes this mindfulness lesson applies to money matters as well. For instance, when you desperately want to buy something like a house, taking a pause and considering your emotions before making a big decision can be wise. Mindful Schools teaches kids to become aware of unhealthy emotions and not let these emotions guide their actions, a valuable skill that can truly change the game. Money intersects with every area of our lives: our self esteem, romantic relationships, mental health, family ties— everything has a money trail. And because of that, money can get intertwined with our psyche in interesting, and sometimes challenging, ways. Nicole wanted to dig deep into this, so she called up Lindsay Bryan-Podvin, a financial therapist who combines financial literacy with the emotional and psychological side of money. What does kale have to do with financial education? What do you need in order to create a budget—and stick to it? Where in your budget do you need to give yourself permission to stop spending? How is financial education like learning how to cook? This week's episode comes from the archives of a series of interviews I did for The Sorta Secret Sisterhood, a membership site I ran for women in perimenopause. It feels appropriate to post this as we head into tax season, when money and financial well-being—something we often like to ignore—become unavoidable. Because it's from early 2020, you'll hear us mentioning the beginning of the pandemic—which feels like a lifetime ago. bio Ellen Abramson is living her “second act.” After a thirty-year career in fundraising for the University of Michigan Health System, American Red Cross and Stephen M. Ross School of Business, Ellen carried out a plan to transition from full-time work for a large institution to a life in which she is in charge of her time and able to focus on what gives her life joy and meaning. To make this possible, Ellen and her husband paid down $93,000 of personal debt within a five-year period. She and her family live debt-free, empowered by a monthly plan for saving, spending and giving. Ellen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Chicago and Master of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan. Welcome back to the Financial Therapy podcast, I'm Jane Monica-Jones. Your host and your personal Financial Therapist. In recent years we have heard a lot about financial wellbeing or financial wellness. But what does it really mean? When we think of financial wellbeing we might think we need more financial education on strategies such as how to invest, diversify and accumulate. And if you head over to our favourite bookstores, for years there has plenty of books, like that there. But interestingly, research shows financial knowledge and experience only makes up about 9% of what make us better at managing and multiplying our money.A lot of research is now saying that psychological and behavioural factors make up the majority of us being better with money at around 61%. Having self-control, feeling confidence in money management skills, good modelling when we were growing up and the like. So it's not surprising we are seeing more Financial Psychotherapists or Financial Psychologists that can help.I am inserting some flagrant self promotion here…that's why I wrote my book The Billionaire Buddha, which repairs the psychological and behavioural issues we have with money. But enough about me, let's talk about women. What does the research say about how women manage and relate to money in the context of having many structural barriers against them. Such as earning less, having less superannuation because of time out of the workforce for child rearing or caring for elderly parents. How is money integrated into their lives and are there any differences to the way men relate to money. To give us a lot more clarity we are speaking with expert Financial Wellbeing & Financial Capability Researcher Professor Roslyn Russell from the School of Economics, Finance and Marketing at RMIT University.  DISCOVER FINANCIAL WELLBEING PROGRAMS , check out the Financial Wellbeing website ... financialwellbeing.coHOST - Jane Monica-Jones, Financial Therapist & Author of The Billionaire BuddhaFinancial Therapy - financialtherapy.orgJane Monica-Jones - janemonicajones.comFinancial Wellbeing Courses - financialwellbeing.coThe Billionaire Buddha on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3kGlBv3GUEST - Roslyn Russell is a Professor (Research) in the School of Economics, Finance and Marketing, RMIT University.  Roslyn has been researching financial capabilities and financial wellbeing in Australia for more than 15 years. Welcome to the Financial Therapy podcast, I'm your host and your Financial Therapist Jane Monica-Jones. In this episode we are talking money, shame, deserving and adversity. The latter of course, we will all go through at some stage in our life. Through a loss of a job, maybe a loss of loved one, an illness or even having some mental health issues.“All walks of life, it didn't seem to matter what kind of income your husband had or what kind of house you lived in, you could end up of the street.” - Jan HatchHow do governments, non-for-profits and even us, deal with adversity and what are the impacts that adversity has not only on our financial lives, but on our sense of self- worth. We'll look at who deserves what when it comes to the public purse and what are the hard decisions care organisations have to make with limited resources for those that face adversity. We'll also be delving into an unconscious bias that we know it exists, but often don't want to talk about.  It's called ‘worthy bias', who do we deem as being worthy of society time, money, resources and like. To help us all unpack, uncover, and maybe enlighten us, we speak with Jan Hatch, a Gestalt Therapist who has a Masters in Social and Public Policy. So, thank you for joining us as we have a bigger conversation about us and money.    And remember to subscribe to the Financial Therapy podcast.WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT WORTHY BIAS, check out the Worthy Bias Training ... financialwellbeing.co/worthy-biasHOST - Jane Monica-Jones, Financial Therapist & Author of The Billionaire BuddhaFinancial Therapy - financialtherapy.orgJane Monica-Jones - janemonicajones.comFinancial Wellbeing Courses - financialwellbeing.coThe Billionaire Buddha on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3kGlBv3GUEST: Jan Hatch, Gestalt Therapist & CounsellorWeb: https://www.janhatch.com/Jan works in private practice as a coach, counsellor and therapist with individuals and organisations including LifeCircle, Cancer Council NSW, CaringKids, FAMS, NSW Council of Social Services and Community Restorative Centre. Tools of titans, Tim Ferris (recomendação do formato em livro físico).2. Como fazer amigos e influenciar pessoas, Dale Carnegie (os dois formatos, áudio e livro físico, são apelativos e complementares).3. Talking about money in an open and frank way is really the last taboo. For most of us, money is a relationship (often tricky) that we cannot say adios to. Unless of course you are the Queen of England or the Dalai Lama (who have no personal need for money) you are mostly likely going to be transacting, interacting and sometimes combating with it till the day you die.

“I know I can say unwaveringly, without a shadow of a doubt in every single cell of my body, until the day I die, I will be an entrepreneur for entrepreneurs living my life out loud showing that anything is possible. Now the way that I deliver that is completely irrelevant and that's when business becomes exciting - and indeed life!” - Lisa Messenger, The Moment HQ Podcast This is my favourite quote from my interview with Lisa Messenger, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Collective Hub, a lifestyle magazine now sold in 37 countries. I love this quote so dearly because it purely illustrates that our purpose in life is not about “what” we do, it's simply about connecting to what we love and expressing that love in many different ways. The “how” is irrelevant. Creativity doesn't care how it is expressed, only your mind does. So why not open yourself up to life and allow creativity to be expressed however it chooses. You are merely the vessel for self expression, you do not need to direct it, it will direct you if you let it. I've had the pleasure of interviewing Lisa a handful of times throughout the years. The first time in 2011, much before she founded Collective Hub and again when I was the editor for Aspire and My Business magazines. And to tell the truth, in my experience of her, she has remained as sweet, humble and generous as she was before the global success of Collective Hub. I've admired Lisa's gun-ho attitude towards following her dreams and taking action, all while truly persevering through all obstacles and challenges presented to her - and if you've read her books (Daring & Disruptive, Life & Love, Money & Mindfulness or Breakups & Breakthroughs) you too will know that life has dished up a fair serve to test her will. If you haven't read her books, or aren't completely familiar with the journey and rise of Collective Hub, let me tell you now…In order to achieve the success you may dream of (whatever and however that looks for you), there is no “quick-fix” or “magic elixir”. You've got to do the work and that “work” will manifest itself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to truly test your will. If you really want it, pull on your rain boots and jump ALL IN and take it moment-by-moment. It may sound daunting hearing this, but when you're doing what is true for you and following the feeling in your heart, the journey will be effortless. You will come across challenges for sure, yet amongst the challenges will remain a deep seated peace and a desire that spurs you onward in each moment. Lisa and I have a chat about STAYING TRUE TO YOUR DREAM & TRUSTING GUT INSTINCT. Learn about: What to do when you want to give up Finding the authentic voice for your brand How much gut instinct played a role in building Collective Hub What purpose really looks like And find out: What moves Lisa? What scares her? What she'd be doing if she wasn't in her profession? WWW.THEMOMENTHQ.COM
