"Serving Aces" with Alexandra Stevenson and co-host Hugues Laverdière discuss the Miami Open, the players, the surface, and the reason why some players can handle the "swampy" conditions and others can't - clearly by the top ten players that went out on both sides. Alexandra says Swiatek plays without joy. She mentions Andreeva having some looks of Martina Hingis - but she says no one has ever been able to match Hingis' hands. Alexandra says the budding superstar of tennis is Fonseca of Brazil. She says with 400,000 Brazilians living in Miami the match against de Minaur became Davis Cup raucous energy with the crowd erupting as they thought their player Fonseca could win. de Minaur from Australia kept his cool and managed to pull the win out in three sets. Ben Shelton hard launched his girl friend, Trinity Rodman, the soccer player.

Many of us look back at 1999 as the dawning of the modern golden age of women's tennis, a season that saw four different Slam champs, the abrupt exit of one GOAT, and the breakthrough of a new one. Lindsay, Martina, Venus, Serena, and Steffi battled for the biggest titles and crafted historic, enduring storylines at every major event of the year. There was a changing of the guard, sure, but the shift from one era to the next is never quite as cut-and-dry as it seems. Plus, of course, the memes -- or, in this era before memes -- the off-court controversies and clownery that we still talk about: BeadGate, the formal education argument; and more darkly, the homophobic insults thrown at Amelie Mauresmo and the persistent, racialized "muscles vs. brains" narrative. Let's take a walk down memory lane and discuss a season of women's tennis that quite literally changed the sport forever. 03:10 Setting the scene: What is happening in women's tennis and the culture at the fin de siècle? What does the teen pop explosion and Y2K have to do with tennis? 08:10 The WTA's struggles with investors and why anonymous “analysts” doubted the marketability of women's tennis 19:30 So what makes the ‘99 season so special? 22:55 Themes of the season: the Williams sisters are coming, and not everybody's happy about it 29:55 Martina is #1, but the dominance is slipping 37:40 Australian Open: Hingis three-peats, Mauresmo comes out, and we endure BeadGate 55:25 Roland Garros: Graf wins final major in an almighty mess of a final 62:50 Wimbledon: Lindsay ain't just a hardcourt wonder 69:45 Steffi calls time on one of the greatest careers in tennis history 72:25 US Open: Serena bags the first Williams singles Slam, beating a befuddled Hingis in the final; plus, why the ‘formal education' dust-up is even more instructive than we remembered 83:50 The year-end rankings, some fun facts about the Slam season, and the signs of what's to come

There have been few players in tennis history as consistent and humble as our guest, Amy Frazier proved to be throughout her long career. With longevity comes records, such as the distinction of having spent 18 conservative years in the top 100 (the longest ever continuous span by a female player who wasn't able to reach the top 10 - she made it to #13) OR having made 71 grand slam appearances - including 20 straight US Open events (a record before Venus Williams made this her latest achievement). Amy's stellar career included 8 WTA titles, 30 wins against top 10 champions including: Navratilova, Henin, Hingis and Seles as well as being the official WTA trivia answer to the question “who was the last player to ever play legend, Steffi Graf before her sudden retirement?” Join host Jon Guerrica as we spotlight a career of a player that wasn't fully recognized for what she was able to achieve during her amazing flat groundstroke striking career. This week, we get to know….the fantastic, Amy Frazier. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jon-guerrica/support

In the early days of this podcast, the guys forgot who was the #1 player in the world on the ladies side... Ash is making the guys eat their word, with Aldwin and Jason discussing whether she is starting her own era of dominance the likes of former greats like Seles, Graf and Hingis. With the beauty of her play and ease of victories this week, would you agree, or is it still too soon to compare her to such tennis legends? For the first time in nine years the top for seeds make a Masters 1,000 semi final on the men's side... and none of them are the big three. The guys reflect on this new era and the exciting transitional period we're seeing in men's tennis. Of course, Aldwin and Jason discuss Aldwin's ex's (Tsitsipas for new listeners) propensity for mid-match potty breaks, which was called out by Zverev in their semi-final encounter. The guys witnessed this in Toronto last week in matches against both Humbert and Ruud. Jason starts the show by inviting a therapy session on his recent poor on court play... against the opponent (and doubles partner) who has his number, as the guys head into their first GLTA tournament in two years in Montreal over Labour Day Weekend.

In 1997, Martina Hingis beat Jana Novotna to become the youngest Wimbledon winner in the Open Era, aged 16. She also put together one of the best seasons in tennis history, winning all but one of her Grand Slam matches. Are her achievements from that year underrated? How were her sassy comments and confidence received at the time? In what way did she sometimes get herself in trouble with remarks about fellow players? What made her such a joy to watch? And why did she not go on to dominate for years despite a couple of comebacks?Mary Carillo and Lindsay Davenport give perspective on how the power revolution in women’s tennis caught up with Hingis, and Martina herself explains why she thinks players are no longer having the success she had as a teenager. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Dann hört man AOC UKIP. System so gut? Martina Hingis never won the French Open, but the 1999 final was definitely the one that got away as she let slip a comfortable lead against Steffi Graf in a classic match filled with aggro. How did Hingis stir things up before the match with her comments about Graf? What incidents turned the crowd against Hingis and caused her to get a point penalty? And in what way were the scenes at the end of the match - as Hingis returned to the court in tears comforted by her mother - so pathos heavy? We hear from Mary Carillo about why she loved watching Hingis play and why she always assumed that the Swiss would win Roland Garros one day.As for Graf, this turned out to be her last Grand Slam title, and she retired shortly afterwards. French Open Champion and Croatian Fed Cup Captain IVA MAJOLI is a consistent force in the tennis world. As a child, she travelled from wartime Croatia to Bradenton Florida in order to hone her craft at the Bollettieri Academy. As a pro, she quarter-finaled the Australian Open AND Wimbledon and got to #4 in the world. And in 1997, at the age of 20 she shocked the tennis world by stopping Martina Hingis in the finals of the only major Hingis lost that year. She's posted wins over Davenport, Martinez, Seles, and Sabatini and many more. And now along with her captaining the Croatian Fed Cup team, she is on the WTA board, is a co-tournament director and is fast becoming a tennis mom.
