Do you freeze up at the thought of public speaking? Feel like your quiet personality doesn't “fit” on stage? You're not alone—and you don't have to change who you are to be heard. In this episode of The Quiet Warrior Podcast, I'm joined by speaker, comedian, and six-time author Mahlena-Rae Johnson, who calls herself the “Professor X for introverted CEOs with stage fright.” With warmth, humor, and deep wisdom, Mahlena shares how introverts can embrace their own rhythm, speak with impact, and feel safe being seen—without performing or pretending. We talk about: – Why stage fright isn't something to “cure”—and what to do instead – The hidden power of preparation (and why introverts often overprepare) – How to manage nerves, relate to your audience, and recover afterward – What being a “Quiet Warrior” looks like in a world obsessed with visibility – Mahlena's 3-part framework from her book Speak Anyway (Relax • Relate • Release)Whether you're a quiet achiever navigating leadership or an introvert dreaming of sharing your story, this episode is your permission slip to speak in a way that honors you.Connect with Mahlena-Rae Johnson:LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/mahlenaBook: https://mahlenaspeaks.blogspot.com/2023/11/speak-an.htmlResources mentioned:Gay Hendricks, The Big Leap | Conscious Luck | Your Big Leap YearCall to action:If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review, rate the show, and share it with someone who needs a little courage to speak anyway. This episode was edited by Aura House Productions

Today our story is about how violent ideologies can lead to horrifying ends, and that even the love and diligence of devoted parents can't always triumph over evil. This case, like the others we cover, is disturbing and tragic, but it's also an example of how a hate-filled culture can swallow an entire family whole.  We're discussing the teenaged skinheads Bryan and David Freeman (and their cousin Nelson Birdwell) who murdered their parents and brother in February of 1995.   SOURCE MATERIALS :https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeman_family_murdershttps://www.mcall.com/news/local/mc-freeman-howorth-murders-anniversary-20150227-story.htmlhttps://www.oxygen.com/killer-siblings/crime-news/bryan-david-freeman-became-neo-nazis-killed-familyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNVMQHmO9ichttps://www.grunge.com/867098/inside-the-brutal-murders-of-the-freeman-family/https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/ideology/racist-skinheadhttps://www.wfmz.com/news/area/lehighvalley/conversation-with-convicted-killer-bryan-freeman/article_dd3bd560-12cc-5970-878a-f069d2fd3aa5.htmlRESOURCES:https://www.splcenter.org/20170814/ten-ways-fight-hate-community-response-guidehttps://www.niot.org/action-hub/local-lessons/guide-responding-hate-groupshttps://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2022/09/14/stop-hate-groups-recruiting-children/8064156001/?gnt-cfr=1https://www.justice.gov/hatecrimes/preventing-hate-crimes-your-communityHosted and edited by Amanda ScottCo-Hosted, produced, researched, co-written and original graphic design by Pamela ScottOriginal music by Waves EntertainmentDisclaimer by Chuck HaungsENMESHED is an OH NO! By 1968, he was judged competent to stand trial; he was found guilty of the murder of Worden, but he was found legally insane and was remanded to a psychiatric institution. He died at Mendota Mental Health Institute of respiratory failure, on July 26, 1984, aged 77. He is buried next to his family in the Plainfield Cemetery, in a now-unmarked grave. This guy had a difficult childhood and grew up to be totally depraved.Definitely Mummy issues and a whole lot more to go along with that.listen to all of the sordid things that he did and created if your stomach can take it.have a listen kick back and get ready to have your mind blown by the depravity of mankind. Please take care and stay safe, Love Steph and Kim xx References:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Gein https://murderpedia.org/male.G/g/gein-edward.htm https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/real-life-psycho-ed-gein-dies https://allthatsinteresting.com/ed-gein-housePhotographs and additional reading.trigger warning: the first 2 links have graphic crime scene photos, they have mutilated corpses etchttps://cvltnation.com/nsfw-the-ghoul-of-plainfield-ed-geins-crime-scene-photos/https://medium.com/lessons-from-history/ed-gein-and-his-nipple-belt-60adb2a57bc4https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-serial-killer-ed-gein-is-led-away-from-his-farm-by-detectives-plainfield-50017918.htmlResources:https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/mentalhealth/Pages/contact-service.aspx#24-hourhttps://www.beyondblue.org.auhttps://www.betterhelp.comFind us at:Instagram: SolvedunsolvedorspookyFacebook: Solvedunsolvedorspooky Email us at: podcast@solvedunsolvedorspooky.comPatreon: see belowSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45582970)

September 1934,The lower half of a woman's torso, with her thighs attached, was found amputated at the knees, She was washed up on the shores of Lake Erie just east of Bratenahl. she had some sort of chemical preservative on her skin which had turned it red, tough and leathery. She was named the Lady of the Lake, and also dubbed victim 0, as she was added to the body count at a later date.Over the next few years decapitated and dismembered bodies were found in various forms all around Cleveland.body parts in bags, boxes, and baskets, and other random packaging were turning up everywhere, heads and torso’s littered the landscape. In all the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run is said to have killed 13 victims, including the lady of the lake.I believe this number to be far greater, and believe that the Lady of the Lake was not his first victim.Kim and I discuss many aspects and have a stab at profiling this vicious killer,  who was never  brought to justice. The Mad butcher is an intriguing case that I hope is some day solved.Kim and I are eager to hear your thoughts on this and encourage you to email us at podcast@solvedunsolvedorspooky.comPlease donate to the podcast, as your support is needed to help us to buy much needed sound equipment, and to help with the costs associated with producing the show. There are a number of tiers on podfan, starting as low as $3.00 per month, simply click on the link and offer your much appreciated support, we will be calling your names out on the show in gratitude for your help.thanks for listening, please leave a review on apple podcast , this makes it easier for others to find us and please share us with your friends and family.References:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Torso_Murdererhttps://www.clevelandpolicemuseum.org/collections/torso-murders/https://criminalminds.fandom.com/wiki/The_Mad_Butcher_of_Kingsbury_RunPhotographs and additional reading.https://www.cleveland.com/life-and-culture/erry-2018/10/55d2b5ea596983/clevelands-infamous-torso-murd.htmlResources:https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/mentalhealth/Pages/contact-service.aspx#24-hourhttps://www.beyondblue.org.auhttps://www.betterhelp.comThanks for listening :  we are eager to hear your stories, so if you have any listener stories for the show, please email us at podcast@solvedunsolvedorspooky.comFind us at:Instagram: SolvedunsolvedorspookyFacebook: Solvedunsolvedorspooky Email us at: podcast@solvedunsolvedorspooky.comSupport the show (https://pod.fan/solved-unsolved-or-spooky)Support the show (https://pod.fan/solved-unsolved-or-spooky)

For years after her abuser died, she was drawn to a pressure cooker-life similar to the combat zone she had known at home and for years she would ask herself why she was unlovable. That all changed on a crucial day in young adulthood when she understood in her bones that what had happened to her was not who she was; that what she had experienced was profoundly damaging but she didn’t have to keep reliving her past. It was the day she decided to stop letting the words of her abuser control her life or dictate her actions; the day she understood the power to survive was in her hands. Alesha shares her story and suggestions for reaching out to those who might be struggling, the signs of elevated sadness in others, and how to approach loved ones who might be in trouble.Note that during this interview, we encountered some sound inconsistencies. For more on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs):https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/childabuseandneglect/acestudy/index.htmlResources for the prevention of child abuse:https://preventchildabuse.orghttp://www.preventtogether.orgFor more about this episode visit:https://andtheneverythingchangedpodcast.comFor more on the work Alesha does:http://www.thejoyguru.net/about.htmlChild Abuse/Resilience/Survivor

One thing I often wondered when I first got into DIY was whether any "real" producers and engineers built their own gear. So I was thrilled to visit Marc Alan Goodman at his studio Strange Weather in Brooklyn to see his DIY gear and talk to him about how DIY fits into his career as a successful studio owner and engineer. We recorded some video of Marc's DIY gear which you can see below. After my camera ran out of batteries, we sat down and chatted about lots of DIY stuff. Topics covered: Becoming your own studio tech The ecstasy and agony of trying to do everything yourself Marc's involvement in the Harrison Ford Filter project Marc's thoughts on the LAZ EQN, Neve-style EQ (of which he built 16!) How DIY is as old as the profession of audio engineering DIY: business or hobby? Electricity as the true medium of a recording engineer The vintage U87 project (of which he built 3!)

DW Fearn knows tubes. Since he rediscovered the sound of tubes in 1991, DW (Doug) has crafted a legendary line of all-tube, all-red-front-paneled recording gear. In April I had the pleasure of visiting Doug at his home and workshop outside Philadelphia. Doug and I sat down on either side of a ribbon microphone and had a great conversation about tubes, electronics, and sound. During our conversation Doug tells the story of how he returned to tubes after decades of operating an all sold-state studio, and outlines the theory behind why tubes and transistors sound different in a clear and straightforward way. Download the mp3 or listen on iTunes . Subscribe to the DIYRE podcast Topics discussed: How Doug pieced together his first console from standalone amplifiers What happened when he replaced that tube gear with a solid-state console "We couldn't admit that it didn't sound good, so we just got used to it." How a demo tape from college in 1966 led him back to building tube amps "We didn't listen to recorded music in my household... live music was what I was exposed to. So when the time came to build a mic preamp, that's the sound I had in my mind." Tubes vs transistors: why it's all about headroom Even vs odd harmonics and how they relate to tubes vs transistors "The less you torture it, the better it's going to sound. So you keep the signal path as simple as possible." What Doug's new product design process looks like The one equalizer that knocked DW Fearn out DW Fearn refuses to wrestle a piece of gear into existence Many thanks to Doug for having me out to his home and sharing his knowledge so freely. Thank you also to Paul K of Firehouse Recording for connecting us. You can learn more about DW Fearn gear at DWFearn.com.

Subscribe to the DIYRE podcast Dafydd and I get into some good stuff about mic preamp and general audio design, including: The difference between surface mount (SMD/SMT) and through hole components in terms of sound and performance. Are SMDs good for audio? Should we audio folks resist industry's march toward all surface-mount parts? The concept of "parasitics" in audio electronics design and when their effects can be critical. Dafydd gives us a guided tour of the Eden circuit from the input to output jacks--a great way to get a grasp on the basics of mic preamp design.

Our resident electronics expert, Duncan Gray, is back to answer your audio electronics questions! Duncan and I recorded two hours of answers last week to the questions you asked in the original "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Audio Electronics..." post. So to spare you the tedium of digging through 120 minutes of audio to find the answer to your questions, we've split our conversation up into smaller, more easily digestible podcast. Stick with us until the 33 minute mark, where we answer my favorite question so far that gets to the heart of the amazing relationship between audio and analog electronics. Download the mp3 or listen on iTunes . Subscribe to the DIYRE podcast In today's 45 minute segment we cover: "What troubleshooting process do you recommend when your PCB-based project isn’t working?" "What audible impact does input/output impedance have on the connected equipment. The effect it has upon the amount of voltage transferred is clear, however a more comprehensive explanation on how impedance can alter the sound of interfaced equipment would be hugely appreciated." When impedance can be negligible and when it can have a huge impact on sound. "Capacitors have been causing me headaches for a while now. In pedals for guitars, tone circuits for guitars, audio paths for pre’s, and so on, it always seems like folks go the extra mile to use film caps. Why? Isn’t a cap a cap a cap? Putting aside electrolytics for the moment, and voltage limits, why would anyone use one style (ceramic, mica, polyester, polypropylene) over another for audio purposes?" Why Duncan would avoid ceramic caps in the signal path "like the plague." Duncan ranks types of film capacitors in terms of their suitability to audio. "What parts are most/least to susceptible to heat damage from soldering? Using a hemostat to protect your components while soldering. Straight 5" Hemostat (Amazon affiliate link that benefits DIYRE.) "What do you think the top five safety rules are when building audio gear , whether tube or solid-state?" Which voltages are dangerous? Which are fatal? How to protect yourself from the circuit, and how to protect the circuit from you. "Can you clarify and explain the correlation between audio frequencies & amplitude, and their electrical counterparts current, voltage, and resistance… In other words what does a change in resistance, current, or voltage do to sound waves." The "magic of math": how sound and analog electronics are deeply analogous. Sound and AC voltage: same concepts, different medium Using the concept of "silence" to better understand electrical "ground."

Jeff Steiger of CAPI and I get nerdy about various vintage audio and DIY topics, including: Why create a company dedicated to vintage API gear? Why not Neve, SSL, etc.? Will we ever see ClassicAPI kits in a 1RU rack format, instead of 500-series? Why does old API gear sound so good when it's specs are so bad? The sonically stunning Gar2520 opamp Jeff's new, two-stage preamp design, the VP28 How Jeff tried to cram a full API console strip into one 500-series slot. "Inventory management is a bitch." How DIY gear is beginning to penetrate the big-budget recording world. Are we seeing a return to the early days of recording when many engineers built their own custom gear? Once the audience voting has been conducted, an ANSTO scientist critiques the science featured in the film. So...sorry for not giving credit where credit is due, but here are the steps:  1. Cut the sleeves and collar off of a T-shirt (since this skirt version doesn't taper the fabric in at the waist at all I recommend using a shirt that fits you rather snugly, or you'll have weird bunched up fabric around your waist). If you'd like a straight edge at the bottom of the skirt then just cut off the whole section from under each sleeve (at the armpit) to the other side. I like the look of little slits at the side, so I didn't cut straight across.  2. Cut a hole in the bottom hem of the shirt. The bottom will now become the waistband. Using a safety pin - or a bodkin - thread 1/4" elastic or a strip of fabric through the bottom hem. (I used a piece of stretchy fabric, which gave me a cute bow with some cute dangle-y ties, but also made the waist super elastic comfy). If you're planning to just put in elastic then you can make the hole on the inside of the shirt hem so that the hole is hidden.  3. Ta-da! It looks a little boxy in this pic, but that's only because my floor has no curves. It's actually pretty flattering for a 5 minute project! :-) Don't forget that this skirt version turns the shirt upside down, so if your T-shirt will look weird upside down then don't do this version. I think the Beats Antique logo looks fine upside down, so I didn't mind it being flipped. :-)
