Send me a messageBecome A PatronMake A DonationDid the film Zulu get it wrong? In the 1964 epic, Lieutenant Gert Adendorff rides into Rorke's Drift with dire news of the disaster at Isandlwana. He explains Zulu tactics, warns of the impending attack—and when asked if he'll stay to fight, replies:“Is there anywhere else to go?”But just a year later, Donald Morris's classic book The Washing of the Spears claimed he fled—not once, but twice. Ever since, Adendorff has been caught in a storm of controversy. Was he a deserter who abandoned his men?Or was he the only man to survive Isandlwana and then stand alongside Chard and Bromhead to help defend Rorke's Drift? In this documentary, we investigate the mystery behind Gert Adendorff. Using eyewitness accounts, official reports, and modern research, we ask why history has treated him so harshly—especially when regular British officers who fled to Helpmekaar were never questioned. This is the forgotten story of the man who may have fought in both of the Anglo-Zulu War's most famous battles. The Battle of IsandlwanaSupport the show

Send me a messageAmid the chaos of the British defeat at Isandlwana on January 22, 1879, 22-year-old Private Samuel Wassall of the 80th Regiment displayed extraordinary bravery. As the Zulu warriors overran the British camp, Wassall, already escaping on horseback, spotted a fellow soldier struggling in the raging Buffalo River, desperately trying to flee the massacre. Without hesitation, Wassall turned back, dismounted under enemy fire, and pulled his comrade from the torrent, placing him on his horse before swimming to safety himself. For his selfless act of courage, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the only recipient from the disastrous battle.More of my podcasts about the Anglo Zulu War 1879The Battle of IsandlwanaSaving the Queen's Colour - the Epic Ride of Coghill & MelvillPrisoner of the ZulusSupport the show by:Becoming a PatronBuy me a CoffeeSupport the show

On the 22nd January 1879 in South Africa, the British suffered the greatest defeat ever inflicted upon them by a native African army - when a force of 1,500 was annihilated by the Zulus during the Anglo-Zulu war.Get in touch and get my weekly newsletter:Click hereChelmsford was quick to lay the blame for the defeat at Isandlwana on anyone but himself.Equally it could not be the fault of the redecorated infantry. So rather than Pullene being held to account for spreading his troops out too thinly 3 myths were planted as to who was to blame.NNC collapsed at crucial momentDurnford didn't take commandCommisariat delayed ammo supply but quibbling and screwdrivers. Not only do these myths obscure Chelmsford culpability in dividing his force and Pulleine's decision to spread his line too thinly and not create any entrenched positions. It ignores something more important. That they British had been out manoeuvred and out fought by an enemy with spears and shields. The Zulus had successfully fooled Chelmsford into dividing their force. They had moved 25,000 undetected to the north. They then delivered a horns of the buffalo attack over a 4 mile front and despite one of the horns going behind the mountain they had timed the devastating attack perfectly. Finally, despite the withering fire laid down by the experienced British redcoats, the Zulu warriors had held their nerve and pressed home their attack, inspired by the Chief Biyela.Support the Show.

It had all been going so well. The Congress of Berlin had been a huge success, allowing Disraeli (and Salisbury) to bring back peace with honour. Things should have been flowing the Conservatives' way. But then there were a couple of bad military adventures, launched by over-powerful and out-of-control colonial administrators. Both ended up costing a lot of money and a lot of lives, for little gain. One, the Second Anglo-Afghan War, was even launched from India while a famine that eventually cost 8 million lives was raging and relief budgets were being cut to save money, although funds were being poured into waging war. At the same time, the British economy was doing badly, with a recession and bad harvests. That all added up to a rather bleaker picture for the Conservatives than their successes might have implied. This episode also introduces three people we'll be hearing more about later, and who had significant moments in the 1870s (in one case, the moment was birth, a pretty significant event, without which it's hard for anyone to make a name for themselves).     Illustration: Graveyard at Isandlwana, site of Britain's worst defeat in a colonial war since the American War of Independence. The Battle of Rorke's Drift (1879), also known as the Defence of Rorke's Drift, was an engagement in the Anglo-Zulu War. The successful British defence of the mission station of Rorke's Drift, under the command of Lieutenants John Chard of the Royal Engineers and Gonville Bromhead, 24th Regiment of Foot began when a large contingent of Zulu warriors broke off from their main force during the final hour of the British defeat at the day-long Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879, diverting 6 miles (9.7 km) to attack Rorke's Drift later that day and continuing into the following day.

A byword for tenacity and courage, the famous last stand has studded history with legendary exploits that define conflict and empire.  From Thermopylae to the Alamo, from Custer’s last stand to Okinawa, they represent individual heroism and sometimes crass military miscalculation.  The result is always the same, the wiping out of a small group of die-hard defenders. The odds might be crazy, and catastrophe might ensue, yet as the explosion at the British Army magazine near Delhi in 1857 proved, the consequences can reverberate down the years.  So, whether its FUBAR or SNAFU, or just desperate men fighting like ‘rats in a sack’ to quote a senior British Officer after Rorke’s Drift, we remember many of them.  And whether for PR purposes or to deflect attention from wider disasters, they do not diminish the bravery of those involved. So it GoesTom Assheton & James Jackson Ref.Thomas Babington Macaulay, Horatius, Lays of Ancient Rome See also:YouTube: BloodyViolentHistoryhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodyviolenthistory/https://www.jamesjacksonbooks.comhttps://www.tomtom.co.uk If you enjoy the podcast, would you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes, Spotify or Google Podcast App? Brief History of Wars

The Anglo – Zulu wars, a clash between the might of the British Empire with the African Zulu Kingdom, began in 1879.In 1874, Sir Henry Bartle Frere was appointed High Commissioner for Southern Africa. His mission was to bring the various African kingdoms, tribal areas, and Boer Republics together under British rule, modelled after the policy which brought the various states within Canada together under one political and military control. He was opposed by several forces, mainly the various independent Boer states, and the Zulu Kingdom, with its vast army.In order to bring the region and its tribes together under as part of the British Empire, Frere decided to go to war with the Zulu Kingdom. Working on his own, without the backing of his government, Frere issued an ultimatum to the Zulu King Cetshwayo on 11 December 1878. The demands proved impossible to comply with, and war was declared. The British forces, led by Lord Chelmsford, invaded Zululand. Many battles ensued, including a stunning Zulu victory at Isandlwana, and the near-collapse of the garrison at Rorke's Drift. However, in the end, the British were triumphant. The Zulu Nation would no longer be independent. The podcast is under an hour, brief but informative and the history hit you are looking for. Please review! "Para sentirse mal hay que estar vivo". Teniente Chard. The battle of Isandlwana fought on the 22nd of January 1879, is one of the most discussed and written about engagements in the history of the British army. We British do love a glorious defeat and the battle certainly falls into that category. It's a difficult battle for the historian - disjointed and confused with few first-hand accounts to help us.  As Keith Smith says:  “Isandlwana is the most impenetrable engagement to comprehend because all of the major European participants lost their lives. Had Colonel Durnford, Lietuentant-Colonel Pulleine or even Lieutenant Melvill survived, then the story of the events of that dreadful day would now be easier to tell. But they did not, and it is thus no accident that this battle engages us still.”  Welcome to episode 2 of the Redcoat history podcast with me Christian Parkinson – I'm a filmmaker, photographer and battlefield explorer who has a passion for the history of the British army – a passion that I'm desperate to share. It’s over a decade since David Rattray was murdered at his famous Fugitives Drift Lodge. Historian Rattray was a masterful storyteller whose tales of the 1879 Anglo Zulu War, and particularly the historic battles of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift, built him a global following that attracted packed houses, especially in London. The obvious successor to the famous Rattray is chartered accountant turned storyteller Michael Charton, who works off a wider canvass, but like his fellow South African, specialises in forgotten stories drawn from the troubled history of his homeland. Charton, whose events at home are booked out months in advance, will be addressing London audiences for the first time this month. His first event was sold out within 24 hours. The second one, on Tuesday 30th October, is filling up fast. I caught up with Charton to tap him on another fascinating topic, the story of Second World War fighter pilot Sailor Malan, a war hero written out of history by the apartheid government.
