This week, I'm joined by Jenny Don't & Kelly Halliburton (Jenny Don't & The Spurs & Pierced Arrows), who discuss their bandmates/dear friends Fred & Toody Cole and the documentary UNKNOWN PASSAGE: THE DEAD MOON STORY.We also discuss how my very first Country/Western show was seeing Fred & Toody's band Western Front, Jenny and Kelly's wildly different entry points into Punk and Country, Jenny learning to sing using an answering machine, The Cole's approach to get the job done with limited resources, how Kelly first met Fred Cole at the age of 8 because his Dad was already in a band with Fred, The Wipers, Poison Idea, the love for Dead Moon in Europe, the kindness of Andrew Loomis and the monster drummer he was, the origin of post-Dead Moon band Pierced Arrows and Kelly's time as drummer with Fred & Toody, what is was like touring with The Coles & their late night casino adventures, how the doc captures the dampness of Portland, The Lollipop Shoppe and motorcycle exploitation films, the difficulties with crossing country borders with the Coles, how Pierced Arrows wrote their songs, a walkthrough of The Coles' one-of-a-kind house, Chris being to afraid to play the guitar he was going to buy in front of Fred Cole, The Cole's early bands The Rats & King Bee, how Fred Cole discovered punk rock at a Ramones show, ageism in early punk rock, The Dead Moon huddle and the Pierced Arrows 'ring power' ritual, how supportive the band was of the opening bands they played with, Mike Watt, Toody Cole continuing to rock, being a lifer in music while being in a couple band and so much more...So let's huddle over that melted candle shoved into a Jack Daniel's bottle on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Mrs. P's Book Club returns with a dramatic spoiler dump of Dead Moon! Welcome to the near future where the Moon is a vast graveyard and a meteor strike erupts hundreds of corpses across the lunar landscape. Will the caretakers have to put in overtime to put the bodies back? Is this a thinly veiled plot device to do space zombies? Is Zombie still copyrighted to the point that they have to call them something stupid like shamblers or gravekittens? Last week’s look at my personal home plays was so much that I carried it on this week. Once again, there were almost 60 years of rock and roll represented, from The Troggs and Small Faces to my favorite record of 2023, Scratch ‘N’ Sniff by The Whiffs. Full sets showcased the musical and personal relationship between married songwriters Amy Rigby and Wreckless Eric and the great reissue campaign of the vastly underrated Dead Moon. Also, please head to YouTube and subscribe to our channel – Public Domain Classics 888. We have over 500 classic films from over 110 years of releases! This week is another show devoted primarily to music I’ve been listening to around the house. The first half is dominated by new tracks recently sent to me by various labels, and sometimes the artists themselves. There’s a new tune from Sioux Falls’ own Thought Patrol. There’s Big Stir’s latest projects featuring former Standells leader Tony Valentino. There’s the usual handful of Rum Bar Records releases, including the return of The Short Fuses. The second half of the show are highlighted by recent box set releases of The Velvet Underground, Dead Moon, and the legendary live 2Tone Dance Craze soundtrack, along with favorites by the New York Dolls, The Mummies, The Creation, The Pretty Things, and Paul Revere & The Raiders. There’s almost 60 years of fabulous rock and roll! As for this week’s edition of “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”, I don’t have a lot of background information regarding the version by a band called Funeral Service. All I’ve managed to find out is that they were a French band that put their cover out in 1986 as the b-side to a version of the classic “Pills”. If you have any info on this band, please let me know. Episode Notes Big News! We're going on a month long hiatus because the health of both hosts requires more dedicated attention! We'll still be around on Twitter and tumblr, so please feel free to message us there. Join Eisha and Kim as they explore Acts 47-49 of the Sailor Moon manga in the Dead Moon/Dream arc! In this episode, our tangents include word salad attacks, not understanding the connection between Nehelenia and Zirconia, how we wish Act 49 was completely in color, and that yes, it's Queen Serenity all the way down. Also, Helios is going to marry Chibi-Usa one day- he doesn't get a choice. Please rate and review us wherever you find us or... in the name of the moon, we will punish you! Episode Notes Join Eisha and Kim as they embark on a new adventure with the Dead Moon Circus in the Sailor Moon manga! In this larger than usual episode, we talk about poor medical practice, abandoned children, dead parents, the confusing attractiveness of Helios (prince of the horse girls), Chibi-Usa's weird attachment to Mamoru, and how it's always VERY VERY IMPORTANT to tell your friends when you're sick or hurting. A while back, a bumper sticker made its way around town: “Fred & Toody, Not Fred & Carrie!” In the most classic (passive-aggressive) Portland way, it pointed out the schism that Portlandia (with Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein) had created between some old Portlanders and the new ones. Fred and Toody Cole were the husband and wife duo behind the legendary Portland rock band Dead Moon, active in the Portland music scene since the 1960s. If anyone is able to give advice to a city going through another recalibration of what's important, it'll be Toody (Fred passed in 2017). She talks with host Claudia Meza about the golden days of DIY Portland and how she's kept it all going. Want more on Dead Moon? Check out this great PDX Monthly article. Looking for more stories? Is urban density good or bad??? This is the type of question we'd prefer not to answer. But if you're okay with a little nuance, hop on in while we take a stroll through what density means, what it does and doesn't do, and why the topic riles so many people up. We talk about: What density measures Arguments people make against density Arguments people make in favor of density A theory on why density tends to be a fixation in North America Different ways to reach the same density How cars factor in (and cars always factor in!) What is overcrowding? And how that relates to "density" How talking about urban intensity allows for greater specificity And a lot more! Links: Want to learn more on this episode's topic? When I sat with Zach Amster of the up and coming monster rock band, Abrams, I knew I was in for it. Zach has that certain something that I'm familiar with and envy at the same time. He's thoughtful and transparent, but he owns the floor and in our interview, Zach made it very clear he knows what's what. The direction of Abrams is clear and it's my hope that the show today will turn you towards the future of rock and roll as we turn our ears to the groundswell. Especially since the new album releases on September 9th.This is my chat with the man of the moment. It’s Ok. YoliSue y Manuel nos presentaron las siguientes canciones: «Yo solo me visto de Rods And Roll». «Don’t Cry No Tearts». «It’s Ok». «I Walked With a Zombie».
