The Bill Kelly Sghow Podcast: Ontario physicians have been urged to ration one of only two drugs known to reduce mortality in critically ill COVID-19 patients, a harbinger of what lies ahead for other provinces if the third wave keeps rising and Canada cannot secure more of the medication. A shortage of the anti-inflammatory drug tocilizumab is just one of the challenges Canadian hospitals face as faster-spreading and more dangerous variants overtake older versions of the coronavirus. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Ontario all have more COVID-19 patients in their intensive care units than at any other time during the pandemic. GUEST: Kelly Grant, Health Reporter for The Globe & Mail - COVID-19 hospitalizations are climbing, younger patients are filling up intensive care units, and health care staff are in short supply. Jeff Semple reports from the front lines at Toronto’s Humber River Hospital, where variants of concerns are pushing facilities to the brink. GUEST: Jeff Semple, Senior Correspondent for Global National - Vaccine passports are already being used in other parts of the world. In Israel, a “Green Pass” that confirms vaccination status has become an essential passe-partout for daily life, allowing access to gyms, movie theatres, restaurants and other public spaces. Europe, which has fallen behind Canada in the race to vaccinate its population, is a testing ground for myriad new technologies that could be applied in much the same way. Whether we like it or not, experts say, Canada will be pressured into coming up with a system to verify that Canadian travellers have gotten their shots. After decades of government failures in nationalizing and digitizing health data, the development of that system is all but guaranteed to be a logistical nightmare. Its potential applications in a broader post-pandemic world are ethically fraught. And we are already falling behind. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed Canada is among the countries considering a vaccination requirement for international travellers, as of early April. His health minister, Patty Hajdu, has called it a “very live” issue among G7 nations, and said there will need to be “some consistency and some collaboration” among the countries. GUEST: Scott Gilmore, Editor-At-Large for Macleans and a Senior Fellow with the Munk School Of Global Affairs And Public Policy at the University of Toronto - Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband to Queen Elizabeth II, died at the age of 99 on Friday. Philip was a pivotal figure in the British royal family. He was the longest-serving consort to a monarch in British history, having been in the role for more than 60 years. GUEST: Redmond Shannon, Europe Correspondent for Global News - A new survey suggests Canadians aren't very confident in the Canadian military's ability to change its workplace culture following reports of sexual misconduct and discrimination within the forces. According to the latest survey from Nanos Research, just 13 per cent of Canadians are confident the Canadian Armed Forces can “change its workplace to be welcoming to everyone,” while 29 per cent are “somewhat confident” and 56 per cent are either not confident or somewhat not confident. ALSO: Contradictions pile up in the federal government's approach to military misconduct. The Public Health Agency of Canada is warning that the infodemic is worsening the pandemic in Canada. The hoaxes and lies proliferating are causing confusing and distrust. The impact on ordinary Canadians is devastating -- with many families struggling to understand how a loved one could have fallen so quickly out of touch with reality. Anti-lockdown rallies – discounting science and health warnings, this once fringe movement of Covid deniers is growing in numbers and starting to impact how healthcare workers are able to do their jobs. Jeff Semple looks into who is spreading the falsehoods and who is falling for them. Guest: Jeff Semple, GLobal News. COVID deniers airs tonight on Global at 7 p.m. Health Canada has approved use of the COVID-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca this morning, clearing the way for millions of more inoculations in Canada. Canada's regulatory experts had been assessing the submission from AstraZeneca and Oxford University for safety and efficacy since October, and announced their approval this morning. Guest: Jonathan Sher, Longtime Health Journalist and Investigative Reporter McMaster University has signed a partnership that could lead to producing millions of doses of vaccine in Hamilton next year to fight variants of the COVID-19 virus and other diseases. That’s the view of Gerry Wright, a biomedical sciences professor and a top official with the university’s Global Nexus for Pandemics and Biological Threats that was launched last fall. The partnership has McMaster’s Global Nexus joining forces with the University of Saskatchewan’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), which has a long track record in human and animal vaccination research and development. Guest: Gerry Wright, Biomedical Sciences Professor and a top official with McMaster University’s Global Nexus for Pandemics and Biological Threats There is no indication the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship consulted federal security agencies before approving an arrangement for a company owned by the Chinese police to manage Canada’s visa application centre in Beijing, MPs heard on Thursday. Delays are coming to Canada's rollout of COVID-19 vaccines which has put some wrinkles in the federal government's plans. What is being done to minimize the effects of the delays? Guest: Dr. Andrew Boozary, Executive Director of Health and Social Policy at the University Health Network - For nearly a year now, Global News has been taking your questions about COVID-19 straight to the experts: Epidemiologists and infectious disease doctors who've had their hands full on the frontlines of the pandemic. But they also make time to answer questions about how Canadians can keep themselves and their families safe. Some of these doctors have become household names, unlikely medical celebrities. Jeff Semple caught-up with a few of them, to discuss their experience and, of course, to answer some of your COVID-19 questions. Guest: Jeff Semple, Senior Correspondent with Global National - China is hitting back at Canada over its new measures on forced labour in the Xinjiang region, condemning the move and stating that it exposes Canada’s “hypocritical and ugly face.” The latest release from the spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada comes on the heels of an announcement from Global Affairs Canada, which outlined a host of new measures on Tuesday in a bid to move in on businesses that are profiting off forced labour. “The so-called ‘forced labor’ and ‘mass arbitrary detention’ are just a concoction fanned up by some US and Western institutions and personnel,” read the Chinese embassy’s statement, published on Wednesday. When it comes to whether parents should vaccinate their children, there can be a lot of conflicting arguments to be made. Everyone has heard the myths, the studies, the "real-life" cases, but what should we believe? Well, the answer is pretty simple -- the anti-vaccination movement is wrong. According to exclusive Ipsos polling conducted for Global News, two-thirds of parents believe vaccinations are necessary but one in three still worry about side effects. And while 85 per cent of parents surveyed say they believe vaccinations are safe, 85 per cent also feel there is a lot of misinformation out there.
