The 2019 Balakot airstrike was a significant military operation conducted by the Indian Air Force in response to the Pulwama terrorist attack. This marked the first time since the 1971 War that Indian aircraft had conducted an airstrike on Pakistani soil. The strike targeted a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Balakot, Pakistan. The Indian Mirage-2000 fighter pilots carried out the airstrike, aiming to eliminate terrorist threats. The following day, the Pakistan Air Force retaliated with a strike in the Rajouri sector of Jammu. In the ensuing aerial battle, India claimed to have shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter aircraft while losing a MiG-21, with its Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman captured after ejecting over Pakistani-held territory. Later, he was repatriated. The aftermath of the airstrike saw controversies, including unverified news in the newsrooms and conflicting reports. The duo, Dev Goswami and Shiv Aroor recount their experiences covering the event. They discuss the preparations for the airstrike and the controversies surrounding the strike; for one, the Indian Air Force has confirmed "hitting targets," but there is no official estimation of casualties — if any — yet, and Pakistan's response, exploring claims that they intentionally missed targets in India to avoid escalating to an all-out war.Shiv Aroor and co-author Rahul Singh have also covered the detailed account of the Balakot airstrike, including planning, execution, and aftermath in their book 'India's Most Fearless.'Listen in as we bring you the inside and unearthed details of the two tense days!Produced by Anna PriyadarshiniSound Mix by Kapil Dev Singh

The Reserve Bank of India told banks and non-banking financial companies last month to set aside more capital for risk weights. The central bank was concerned about the recent rise in unsecured personal loans. And now, top lenders have asked their fintech partners to curtail issuing tiny personal loans. Paytm has already announced its plan to go slow on sub-50,000-rupee-loans. So is it the end of small retail loans?  The central bank, meanwhile, has said that inflation may soar in November and December. The government too looks circumspect. Its list of food staples facing export restrictions is getting longer as general elections are approaching. Export restrictions on one of the items in the list, which is sugar, were extended beyond October 31 last week. No reason was cited. At the same time, the government also directed sugar mills not to use sugarcane juice or syrup for making ethanol this year. In today's special segment, find out if it is a good idea. And will it fix the sugar supply? Clearly the ruling party doesn't want to take any chance as 2024 is the election year. But what does the calendar year 2024 hold for the markets? Will the small-caps continue their dream run? To what extent geopolitics impact market sentiment? Will 2024 belong to debt/bond market investors instead of equity investors as interest rates remain higher for longer? What about FII and DII flows into equities as an asset class? How start-ups are turning Indian agriculture into organised sector

In the latest episode of the businessline podcast, host Jayapriyanka delves into the transformative trend of off-season corporate farming. This approach involves start-ups and MSMEs partnering with farmers through various contracts to produce agricultural products for consumers. Archana, the Founder of My Harvest Farms, highlights how this business model is empowering farmers to increase their income during non-season periods. Additionally, it offers employment and expertise to farmers who would otherwise be unemployed, says Shan Kadavil, CEO & Co-founder, FreshToHome. While concerns about farmer exploitation exist in corporate farming, companies with strong marketing knowledge are often able to secure better prices for farmers' produce. Rahul Singh, Co-Founder of EcoSoul Home, shares insights from his unit's processing of palm leaves. This not only provides farmers with a steady income but also gives start-ups access to expert labour and the agricultural sector. Kadavil emphasises how start-ups can offer better prices to farmers while keeping products affordable for buyers. Furthermore, these partnerships go beyond monetary benefits; some companies offer farmers vacations and social security benefits such as ESI and PF schemes, demonstrating a commitment to improving farmers' lives. Rituraj Sharma, founder, Zetta Farms, explains how aggregating farmers' efforts and providing social security benefits is mutually beneficial. This model also includes landless agricultural labourers, addressing the issue of seasonal unemployment. Start-ups not only market farm products but also educate farmers, helping them become entrepreneurs and produce value-added products, says Archana. These innovations are making technology more accessible to farmers, attracting young people to agriculture as a career. The goal is to create more rural employment and tackle seasonal unemployment, which remains a significant challenge. However, there are obstacles to bringing farmers into the organized sector, says Singh. Nonetheless, Sukhpal Singh, Professor, IIM-Ahmedabad believes this shift is crucial for making Indian agriculture export-oriented. Building trust between farmers and corporates is another challenge. Some companies partner with government institutions to gain trust, but trust-building remains an ongoing issue, says Sharma. Many of these new farming ventures focus on organic farming, recognising the market value of organic products. However, the lack of incentives for natural farming poses a hindrance, says Archana. Despite the challenges, scaling up operations could offer solutions to sector-wide issues, according to Archana. Lastly, Singh emphasises the importance of striking a balance between the benefits and potential drawbacks of this approach. In late October, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) levied penalties exceeding Rs. 2000 crore, totally across two cases for anticompetitive practices. One was to do with what CCI called Google's abuse of its dominant position in the mobile ecosystem. CCI said that mandatory pre-installation of the entire Google Mobile Suite, with no option to uninstall the same, and their prominent placement amounts to imposition of unfair condition on device manufacturers and thereby contravenes competition law.  In the second case, CCI said making access to the Play Store dependent on mandatory usage of Google Play Billing System for paid apps and in-app purchases was one-sided, arbitrary and devoid of any legitimate business interest.  A third complaint that the CCI is currently reviewing is against Google for allegedly denying market access to Smart TV makers who do not enter into licensing agreements with Google.  To share his views on the topic, we have with us today Rahul Singh, Associate Professor, NLSIU Bangalore, who teaches Competition Law & Policy, Regulation, WTO and Jurisprudence.

Rahul Singh from HCL Technologies discusses how covid has accelerated digital change in the financial services industry. Banks had to adjust in 2020, as the use of cash dropped off a cliff and mobile banking grew by 13%, while branches were forced to close overnight rapidly. As lockdowns were imposed without warning, some of the world's oldest, most cautious organizations were suddenly forced to change – do nothing, and they would surely see a mass customer exodus.  HCL manages IT for Deutsche Bank, ING, and Metro Bank, so I asked Rahul to share his unique insight into the industry challenges faced during the pandemic. He also explores the three significant digital shifts that have occurred within the financial services industry: 1. An explosion in remote working. With existing ways of working, and the obvious privacy and security concerns, banking has been slow to adopt remote working compared to other industries. However, the pandemic made it a necessity – banks had to find a way to enable people to work remotely without damaging customer experience. Rahul talks about the key areas they had to address: removing entrenched rule-based processes to accommodate remote workers and providing the required collaborative tools for employees to complete the necessary functions. He also discusses how recent announcements from HSBC and JP Morgan indicate this isn't a temporary shift but a permanent change. 2. Pushing mobile payments to the top of the agenda. Paying through your phone was once a nice to have, but that all changed when the pandemic meant we had to avoid unnecessary physical contact – so chip and pin card machine use dropped. This meant banks had to speed up mobile payment roll-out and ensure mobile apps were reliable – they couldn't risk letting customers down at the crucial moment. Imagine queuing for half an hour to enter a supermarket, loading your trolley with essentials, and then finding payment doesn't go through when you arrive at the checkout… Rahul says this meant banks' contactless and phone payment options had to mature quicker than initially planned. IT projects had to be re-prioritized, with future-facing alternative payment projects now pushed front and center. The sudden introduction of new rules and directives, such as the FCA's decision to increase the single transaction contactless payment limit to £100, also means banks must be prepared to quickly update payment systems based on directives at short notice. 3. Adopting public cloud computing at breakneck speed. Financial services have been one of the slowest industries to adopt the public cloud, with regulations and restrictions keeping FS out of the fast lane. However, banks had to dramatically speed things up when they suddenly had large remote workforces to support, requiring computing beyond the current capabilities of many existing on-premise or private cloud systems. This led to many flexing their financial muscles to make a move and play catch-up. Rahul can explain how this move unfolded, with critical workloads shifting to the likes of Amazon and Google. He says that every bank around the world will emerge from the pandemic with a public cloud strategy, meaning it will become increasingly prevalent across the industry.

One of the things that investors struggle with the most is with having the right expectations when investing and we've talked about this in the previous episodes as well. Mid-cap funds and small-cap funds tend to have higher returns than large-cap funds. But what most investors don't realize is that those higher returns come with a cost - that is higher risk or volatility. Most often than not, they just look at line charts comparing large-cap funds with mid and small-cap funds without looking at the deep and sharp drawdown and invest. If you look at the inflows and outflows of mid-cap and small-cap funds, you can clearly see that most retail investors tend to invest in these funds when they have already gone up and sell when they crash. So, in this conversation, I caught up with Rahul Singh, the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of Equities at Tata Asset Management. In this conversation Rahul talks about: Whether the Indian markets are too small enough for good opportunities the nature of mid and small caps and how should investors think about them and allocate to them.
