In this episode of the Freedom Writers Podcast, Erin Gruwell sits down with original Freedom Writer Dr. Jessica Martinez to explore the power of persistence and the transformative nature of second chances. Dr. Martinez reflects on her early years navigating a childhood shaped by her parents' teen marriage, her family's struggles with instability, and the extended periods she spent separated from her mother. Despite these challenges, Jessica discovered a haven in Room 203, embracing vulnerability as a superpower and finding the support of the Freedom Writer family. Through honest, heartfelt storytelling, Jessica shares how she became the first in her family to graduate from college, ultimately earning her doctorate. She also discusses her current role as a caregiver — standing by her father's side after a tragic accident claimed her stepmother's life — and the delicate balance of showing compassion while preserving her own mental health. Listeners will hear how Jessica's determination, coupled with the encouragement of mentors and her Freedom Writer brothers and sisters, has helped her defy generational limitations. Join Erin and Dr. Martinez for an inspiring conversation about resilience, the importance of mentorship, and the enduring strength found in learning to love — and forgive — those who need it most.

Accompagnantes

Deciphering Reproductive Aging in Women Using a NOD/SCID Mouse Model

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 7, 2023 4:18

BUFFALO, NY- November 7, 2023 – A new #researchpaper was #published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 15, Issue 20, entitled, “Deciphering reproductive aging in women using a NOD/SCID mouse model for distinct physiological ovarian phenotypes.” Female fertility is negatively correlated with age, with noticeable declines in oocyte quantity and quality until menopause. To understand this physiological process and evaluate human approaches for treating age-related infertility, preclinical studies in appropriate animal models are needed. In this new study, researchers María Marchante, Noelia Ramirez-Martin, Anna Buigues, Jessica Martinez, Nuria Pellicer, Antonio Pellicer, and Sonia Herraiz from IVIRMA, University of Valencia and Instituto Investigación Sanitaria La Fe aimed to characterize an immunodeficient physiological aging mouse model displaying ovarian characteristics of different stages during women's reproductive life. “The main purpose of our study was to establish a physiological ovarian aging mouse model that could be employed to evaluate potential therapeutic interventions derived from human origin.” NOD/SCID mice of different ages (8-, 28-, and 36–40-week-old) were employed to mimic ovarian phenotypes of young, Advanced Maternal Age (AMA), and old women (~18–20-, ~36–38-, and >45-years-old, respectively). Mice were stimulated, mated, and sacrificed to recover oocytes and embryos. Then, ovarian reserve, follicular growth, ovarian stroma, mitochondrial dysfunction, and proteomic profiles were assessed. Age-matched C57BL/6 mice were employed to cross-validate the reproductive outcomes. The quantity and quality of oocytes were decreased in AMA and Old mice. These age-related effects associated spindle and chromosome abnormalities, along with decreased developmental competence to blastocyst stage. Old mice had less follicles, impaired follicle activation and growth, an ovarian stroma inconducive to growth, and increased mitochondrial dysfunctions. Proteomic analysis corroborated these histological findings. Based on that, NOD/SCID mice can be used to model different ovarian aging phenotypes and potentially test human anti-aging treatments. “In summary, in this study we characterized the quality of the ovarian microenvironment and reproductive outcomes of an immunodeficient murine model of physiological ovarian aging by evaluating fertility outcomes, ovarian reserve and stroma, mitochondrial dysfunctions, and the ovarian proteome at different stages. This model adequately mimicked the characteristics of the reproductive stages in women, without external agents compromising folliculogenesis, or disrupting molecular mechanisms and ovarian function, which could mask the processes of physiological aging.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.205086 Corresponding author - Sonia Herraiz - sonia_herraiz@iislafe.es About Aging-US Launched in 2009, Aging-US publishes papers of general interest and biological significance in all fields of aging research and age-related diseases, including cancer—and now, with a special focus on COVID-19 vulnerability as an age-dependent syndrome. Topics in Aging-US go beyond traditional gerontology, including, but not limited to, cellular and molecular biology, human age-related diseases, pathology in model organisms, signal transduction pathways (e.g., p53, sirtuins, and PI-3K/AKT/mTOR, among others), and approaches to modulating these signaling pathways. One of the core indicators of the level of psychological health and safety in an organization is the degree of freedom that workers have to share their concerns about various topics that affect their safety and their comfort level after doing so. In this episode, Dr. I. David Daniels will speak with Jessica Martinez, the Co-Executive Director of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health. The mission of NCOSH is to “build the power of workers and their organizations to demand jobs that are safe, healthy, and free from exploitation and abuse.” NCOSH is a federation of 26 grassroots worker groups and the home of the worker's health and safety movement in the U.S. National COSH is a broad community that includes members of unions and workers' centers, health and safety professionals, academic specialists, and non-profit advocates. They specialize in peer learning, training, support for worker organizing, and advocacy campaigns. NCOSH's focus on safety is unique in that it is rooted in activism and the pursuit of justice for workers, especially workers from black, brown, indigenous, poor, and other marginalized communities that are over-represented in workplace injury and fatality statistics. This activism includes an annual effort to identify the worst employers in the country in terms of how they treat workers that they call the “dirty dozen.”

This will allow us to hit some cases that don't necessarily fit in a theme we are doing, or fit a theme we have already done. It also gives us an opportunity to cover some of the case suggestions we receive! (You can make a suggestion by messaging us on Facebook or Instagram!) So, sit back and enjoy this month's freestyle episode! Pam:  Cindy and Ed George were the perfect couple. Ed was a night club/ restaurant owner, multimillionaire in Ohio and Cindy was a beauty queen! When the couple befriend Jeff and Bonnie Zack in 1991, they thought that they had made life long friends. But, when Jeff was shot point blank in a gas station parking lot, Cindy and Ed's lives would be flipped upside down and all their secrets would come spilling out. Paul Curtis is an amazing composer, who has written countless great songs that all carry that particular British pop sound. Four times it has lead him to the Eurovision, out of total of twenty attempts, but he has written several hits for other contexts as well.He generously lets us dive deeply into both his diary and his drawers, when he openly tells us all his stories and lets us listen to the original demos of the songs that made it and those that didn't, with several never before heard tracks. This second episode starts off with the chaotic competition in 1991, and Paul reveals to us why and how Samantha Janus ruined her voice before her performance. When the BBC started to experiment with different selection formats things got trickier for Mr. Curtis. He tells us why UK representative in 1992, Michael Ball, recorded all the songs in the pre-selection apart from Paul's and why he has such a tough time getting into the competition in recent years that he has even made attempts across the ditch in France with singer Jessica Martinez among other things.Legend: Paul CurtisSongs: Let Be Be the One - The Shadows (United Kingdom 1975) Love Games - Belle and the Devotions (United Kingdom 1984) Give a Little Love Back To The World - Emma (United Kingdom 1990) A Message to Your Heart - Samantha Janus (United Kingdom 1991)Host: Emil LöfströmContact: emil@schlagervannerna.seInstagram Facebookhttp//www.eurovisionlegends.se See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We knew it would not be fair to not have the same conversation with the most important people that are in our student's lives- teachers.
