I am such a major fan of Sabrina Monarch. Sabrina is has always impressed me as someone who owns and embodies her mysticism and her relationship to astrology in ways that are both emergent and grounded. As I say in the intro, if you hang around Sabrina's field you will absolutely deepen your understanding of astrology. The individuals I know who have studied astrology with Sabrina are some of my favorite astrologers. In this episode, we focus on the basics of Evolutionary Astrology: the Nodes & Pluto. Sabrina pulled both of our charts up to discuss how the nodes and Pluto function independently as well as in relationship to planets square the nodes in each of our charts. Chart lovers, this one's for you! Bio: Sabrina Monarch is an evolutionary astrologer, counselor/coach and author/novelist. She gained an unconventional education in creative writing by discovering an online writing community at age 12 and gaining dozens of mentors across the globe who would help her learn how to write for the next several years. She developed an interest in astrology at a young age as well, and took her craft deeper in her early twenties at the same time that her psychic abilities were noticeably coming online. She writes forecasts at www.monarchastrology.com, produces video forecasts on YouTube, and is the host of a podcast about spiritual lifestyle and personal evolution called Magic of the Spheres. She teaches astrology online, including an all-levels Evolutionary Astrology Intensive and advanced alumni courses. Sabrina is widely appreciated for her poetic voice and capacity to name subtle, abstract undercurrents of any particular astrological moment. She has an M.A. in Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness from the California Institute of Integral Studies and currently resides in Portland, Oregon- soon Greece. Matt and Blake pull a Seinfeld. A show about nothing after the Canucks do jack squat at the NHL Trade Deadline. The guys discuss what the Canucks didn't do in terms of not acquiring a player, nor signing Phil Kessel. They talk about whether they should have beaten the price Winnipeg paid for Tyler Toffoli, missing out on Jake Guentzel, and Jason Zucker. Other topics include: bargain prices for teams with cap space & the Canucks' lack thereof, not wanting to go 'all-in' and sell the farm, not moving on from Ilya Mikheyev earlier, Vegas loading up and the means by which the Knights could load up, and Vasily Podkolzin up/down and role going forward. Jeff Paterson (Rink Wide: Vancouver) stops by to say he was surprised and disappointed that the Canucks didn't do more. Jeff cites the need for another scoring winger, the lack of 4th-line identity, the inability to add character players, the lack of quality available (in Patrik Allvin's eyes), Elias Lindholm's go-forward from here, needing Podkolzin to play a role going forward in his analysis. We hear from GM Allvin at the Rogers Arena podium, and we go To The People and hear from listeners/viewers on Canucks-related topics. Presented by Applewood Auto Group. Hey! Welcome to our series of podcasts and posts all about showing vs. telling, which we are on fire about right now, right Shaun? Growls. You can check out the rest of the series on Carrie's Substack Write Better Now or just the podcast episodes on her blog, https://carriejonesbooks.blog/ So, a lot of my writers have a brain like mine, which is sad for them. Just kidding! Just kidding! A lot of them do better when they see an explanation of show vs tell rather than just having their editor or writing coach shout, “SHOW DO NOT TELL!” So, here's a paragraph that maybe could be tweaked for a little too much telling. Once they reached Gwenda the Gerbil's cage, Ham-Ham shoved himself inside before swiftly closing the trap door, notching it. He took a second to breathe while Gwenda stepped onto the hamster wheel. She sighed, and suddenly he felt her staring at him. This is what happens when you immerse yourself in the scene a bit more. Ham-Ham scurried into the cage, Gwenda following. This was bad. “Latch the door!” she demanded, hopping to the wheel. “I'm trying!” It clicked and his breath whooshed out, smelling of stolen dog food. “They'll never know,” Gwenda whispered, “come run up here with me before the human comes.” “You have kibble on your fur.” “Oh,” she said, “I do. You want to lick it off?” Not only is it less telling, but it's in scene and we have a lot more context than just getting somewhere, closing a door, sighing, breathing and staring, right? One reads like blah. One reads like you're in the moment (even though it's in the past tense). One is flatter. One is more dimensional. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Look, you want to live your life in the moment, not have those moments told to you or via other people's/dogs/hamsters moments. WRITING EXERCISE This is from WillowWrites: "Write a scene where two people are arguing. Show the anger and frustration without using the words angry or frustrated." PLACES TO SUBMIT NEA Literature Fellowships  sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.  Genre: Poetry.  Prize: $25,000 grants to published creative writers that enable recipients to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement.  Deadline: March 13, 2024. We're continuing with our monster “Show Don't Tell” series of podcasts and posts. Adverbs are a big place where you tell and not show. So, if I wrote, “You are the sexiest manatee in the world,” Ham-Ham said hopelessly. Would you think that works? Would you feel how Ham-Ham said it hopelessly? Janice Hardy is brilliant and she has a really simple way of explaining how to determine whether or not you're showing rather than telling. According to her, you should ask yourself if you can act something out. If you can act it out, it's showing. If it's not that easy to act out? It's telling. “You are the sexiest manatee in the world,” Ham-Ham groaned and put his head in his paws. And it's not just about dialogue tags, those he saids and they yelled and she moaned. It's also about adverbs in action. Take this one: Ham-Ham quietly said something. Can you show that a bit more without the quietly? Ham-Ham whispered something unintelligible. Ham-Ham whispered a sentence that nobody heard. Ham-Ham whispered. What the hell did he just say? It's deeper, right? You feel it more. That's why adverbs can really pull you into the world of telling. It's a world you don't want to stay in too long. A rabbit hole of boredom. Quick! Get out! EXERCISE So, how do you deal with this in your own writing? You can try to train yourself not to use too many adverbs, or you can revise those little poops out of there after your first draft. Do a SEARCH in your story for the combination of LY. This won't find all the adverbs in there (thanks to sneaky ones like VERY), but it will help. Cut them by two-thirds. Either cut them out or show that adverb in another non-adverb way. DOG TIP FOR LIFE It's okay to revise. It's okay to take the time to really dig deep and show your humans what you want. PLACE TO SUBMIT Cool Beans Lit. Spring 2024 Issue. It takes fiction, nonfiction, poetry, cross-genre, interviews, reviews, art, photography. No fee. Deadline: March 1, 2024. Guidelines are here. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Call for Expressions of Interest: NYU Wild Animal Welfare Summit, published by Sofia Fogel on January 10, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Deadline: March 1, 2024 (followed by rolling submissions) Event: June 21-22, 2024 Location: New York University, New York, NY The NYU Wild Animal Welfare Program is hosting a two-day wild animal welfare summit on June 21-22, 2024. The aim of this event is to connect scholars with an interest in this topic, particularly scholars across a variety of fields and career stages. The first day of the summit will feature lightning talks and discussion sessions. The second day will feature breakout sessions for workshopping collaborative project ideas. Both days will also include vegan meals and plenty of networking opportunities. We welcome expressions of interest from scholars in all fields, particularly scholars who work in animal welfare or conservation science. Please note that funding for travel and hotel is available for early-career scholars, i.e., scholars within five years of their terminal degree. If you have interest in attending this summit, please send the below materials to Sofia Fogel at sofia.fogel@nyu.edu. We guarantee full consideration of all submissions received by March 1, 2024. We will also consider submissions received after that date on a rolling basis. Please include in your expression of interest: A CV or resume. A statement of interest with three elements: A short summary of your current research, your expected future research, and how your research relates to wild animal welfare. (500 words max.) (Optional) If you have ideas for collaborative research projects that you might like to discuss at this summit, please describe them. (250 words max.) (Optional) If you might like to give a lightning talk about your current or future research, please suggest a topic or set of topics. (250 words max.) Please note that if you answer questions (b) and (c), your answers can range from general (e.g., "Researching the effects of wildlife corridors on different kinds of species") to specific (e.g., "Measuring the effects of a new wildlife corridor in Yellowstone National Park on the movement of elk populations." Please also note that answering these questions does not commit you to discussing your ideas or presenting your work at the event. Topics that we see as within scope for this summit include, but are not limited to: How can we assess wild animal welfare at individual and population levels? How can we make welfare comparisons within and across species? What are the most common causes of morbidity and mortality for wild animals, and how do they vary within and across species? How does the project of improving wild animal welfare interact with the project of conserving species and ecosystems? What are the costs and benefits of different kinds of population control for different individuals, species, and ecosystems? How can we support individuals, species, and ecosystems in adapting to human-caused climate change and other such environmental changes? How can we support coordination and collaboration between scholars who work in animal welfare and environmental conservation, among other areas? How can we educate advocates, policymakers, and the general public about the relationship between human, animal, and environmental protection? If you are interested in these or related topics, we would love to hear from you! If you have any questions, feel free to contact Sofia Fogel at sofia.fogel@nyu.edu. Who is Doni Belau? Who is Doni Belau? An inveterate traveler, I've been to nearly 70 countries (and counting). I come alive when I travel, when I'm exploring, and when I'm seeing, tasting, and feeling something new. I love to help other women experience this sensation as I truly feel it helps us see a larger world of possibilities within ourselves. Girls' Guide to Paris & Beyond is an invitation to travel with me to explore another part of the world while we explore another part of ourselves. Before Girls' Guide, I had a long career in television production, stayed at home when my kids were young (and am grateful for that), then tried to make a difference in the not-for-profit arena and politics. I started a not-for-profit in South Africa helping kids in a Capetown township with HIV – one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.I hail from Nebraska, but I've lived most of my adult life in New York. 20 years ago, we bought our first home in France; I've been trying to live there full-time ever since. However, I'm lucky enough to divide my time between Paris, Bordeaux, and New York thanks to a gracious husband.I'm obsessed with food…gourmet Michelin star level meals to aligot at a street fair. I relish finding that unique place with a chef who really cares what he or she is putting on the plate. Plus, I'll try anything once. Weirdest foods sampled to date: frog legs (very good~), escargot & foie gras (duh!), eland and zebra (in Africa), fermented shark (in Iceland – GROSS), and fried grasshoppers (tasty!).I've been a brunette and a blond and blond is better! I try to stay fashion conscious but sometimes I just have to throw on the mom jeans. I believe in the motto “Never act your age!”. Oh, and I'm obsessed with gardens and flowers.Author & Founder of Girls' Guide to Paris & Women's Only Tours throughout France & BeyondParis Cocktails Here are all of Doni's trips, retreats and adventures in 2021 & 2022. https://girlsguidetoparis.com/trips-for-women/Mention La Vie Creative and get 5% off (a savings up to $500) if you book any trip this month. With theaters across the world closed and movies sitting on shelves, movie studios like Universal, Sony, and Disney have each taken their own approach to navigating the new world order. Universal, the most aggressive of the three, immediately put its currently available films on in-home streaming (PVOD), and even more aggressively released a theater-bound family film, Trolls: World Tour, without even a day of theatrical exhibition. It's the latter move that's caused quite the stir, as it's success has caused Universal to at least present as considering whether to upend the current theatrical business model, even for major releases. Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

Due to unforeseen technical issues, our regularly-scheduled Over Coffee® episode will air next Monday, March 16th at 12:01 am.  Please enjoy this repost of one of our all-time most popular interviews! What does it take, to be an astronaut?  Especially since NASA is currently accepting applications from candidates who would ultimately like to explore the Moon and Mars?  (Deadline: March 31, and here's the link for applications.) NASA Astronaut and retired U.S. Army Colonel Douglas H. Wheelock can certainly offer some guidance in that department. "Space has lots of surprises for us," he says. In 2016, we had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Doug, as he prefers to be called, during NASA International Space Apps Challenge, in Pasadena.   Doug has flown twice aboard the International Space Station.  In total, he has spent more than 178 days in space, according to NASA's biography page.  And at the time we talked, he was training the new class of astronauts who had come into the program in 2013, and was looking forward to training another new class that would begin in 2017. Doug's own experience included more than 178 days in space.  In 2007, he served as a flight mission specialist on STS-120, the space shuttle's 23rd mission to the International Space Station.  And in 2010. he returned to the ISS as a flight engineer for Expedition 24, and commander of Expedition 25. Each time, he encountered an unforeseen issue. The first time, a solar panel malfunctioned, necessitating emergency repairs by the crew. And the second time was much more dramatic. The spacecraft went into "survival" mode, shutting down half the ISS' external-cooling system.   Doug and his team were able to innovate against the clock--and their repair of the Space Station's technology, won numerous innovation awards in the process. Here is our interview with Doug, from 2016 NASA International Space Apps Pasadena. On this episode of Over Coffee®, you’ll hear: How Doug first became interested in aviation and space travel; What Doug tells the astronauts he trains, about efficient  spacewalking; What an average day is like, aboard the ISS; How Doug spent his leisure time, aboard the International Space Station; How the crew manages “crew sleep”, with a sunrise or sunset every 45 minutes; The procedures NASA astronauts are trained to observe, after an emergency alarm; Doug’s recollections of his experience in 2010, when half the ISS’ cooling system shut down; Some of the innovations Doug saw teams coming up with, at 2016 International Space Apps Pasadena; Doug’s advice for innovators.

In an episode of The Fighting Farmer, Spence mentioned that one of his processing customers is a book keeper and tax preparer. Then Chad Ward popped up and answered a tax question in the Pastured poultry Talk Facebook group. So I decided to catch up with Chad, who is a pastured poultry farmer from Oklahoma who also happens to prepare taxes and keep books at an H&R Block office. Pastured Poultry Headlines Poultry World published an article that concluded that, “Antibiotic use in US poultry production is 3 times higher than the UK and 5 times higher for turkeys, according to a report released by the Alliance to Save our Antibiotics.” Mike will be doing webinar on producing turkeys for market with FACT . It's free to attend, but registration is required. There will be a playback. Description of the workshop: Mike Badger, Executive Director of the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association (APPPA) and owner of Badger's Millside Farm in Pennsylvania, will share expert advise on how to raise turkeys on pasture - from concerns about bird health, to designs for outdoor housing, to ideas for creative marketing. There will be time for Q&A so be sure to come with any burning questions you may have! APPPA is putting together a resource guide to connect farmers with products and services of other farmers. Deadline: March 9, 2018. Key Farm Accounting Topics The accounting side of the business, according to Chad, will sink more farmers than the production side. Chad shares several things that can help you prepare for next year’s taxes by keeping account of what you’re doing. Keep a dedicated bank account. Use technology to systematize processes, such tracking mileage. Chad recommends MileIQ. To keep track of income and expenses throughout the year, Chad recommends Xero and talks through why Quickbooks is not always the best answer. Mike mentioned Wave. Making the Schedule F fit small scale, niche farming. Issue 1099's for companies that provide you with more than $600 in services. Chad Ward can be reached chad.ward@handrblock.com | Facebook
