In this episode, we sit down with Michael Herwitz, the visionary director of Broadway's JOB. Join us as we delve into Michael's fascinating journey from child actor to director, uncover the creative process behind the success of JOB, and explore the themes that resonate with audiences across generations. Michael shares insights on the role of lighting and staging, the challenges of directing a two-person scene, and the open-ended interpretation of the play's conclusion. Discover how JOB bridges generational divides and engages audiences in meaningful conversations. Follow and connect with all things @HalfHourPodcast on Instagram, and YouTube. Share your thoughts with us on JOB on our podcast cover post on Instagram. MICHAEL HERWITZ is a director, producer, and dramaturg in New York City. He is often found huddled around a new script in development or dreaming up a revival of a favorite musical. His directing work collides fantasy with the mundane, and is often representative of queer and/or Jewish communities. He creates where generosity of spirt and pursuit of excellence go hand-in-hand. Michael is a ferocious advocate for the fourth wall and believes every second act deserves a dream ballet. In Fall 2023, Michael made his directorial Off-Broadway debut with JOB by Max Wolf Friedlich. The twice-extended, sold-out run was a New York Times Critics Pick and hallmarked as "Highbrow and Brilliant" in New York Magazine's Approval Matrix. The commerical transfer at the Connelly Theater in 2024 recouped its investment in five weeks. Born and raised outside New York City, Michael began his career as a child actor on Broadway. While stage managing his middle school musicals, he developed a deep passion for being behind the scenes. Michael has developed and staged new plays and musicals at HERE, Ensemble Studio Theater, JACK, SoHo Playhouse, Williamstown Theater Festival, IRT Theater, Lifeworld, Martha's Vineyard Playhouse, and the Pasadena Playhouse. As an Assistant, Michael has supported the work of Terry Kinney, Moritz von Stuelpnagel, Leigh Silverman, Jessie Nelson, and Joe Brancato. In addition to his directing work, Michael has worked as a General Manager and Company Manager Off-Broadway and on tour. He is the Co-Founder of G45 Productions, an artistic collective dedicated to new plays. His education spans Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts to Northwestern University to the Williamstown Theatre Festival to watching countless movie musicals as a kid. And how do you overcome questions of self-worth and find the courage to speak openly about your mental health? As you listen, we hope you feel their friendship effect, too. Sara Bareilles closes out the episode with a surprise performance. This episode was recorded LIVE in New York. Special thanks to the 92NY for hosting. We keep it family style for November's theme of COMFORT FOOD and what better way to keep it clean than watching movies where actors play mentally challenged characters? Unlike “Radio” and “Bill” this next choice is not based on a true story so all of this was as intentional as could possibly be. These movies are saccharine by nature but they might have to amputate your feet after this one. They really thought they had a special award winner on their hands with the very blue (literally) “I Am Sam” directed by Jessie Nelson in 2001 and starring Sean Penn as “Sam” a man who with the mental capacity of a seven year old who raw dogs an adorable baby girl (played by Dakota Fanning) into this world. How does he get to have an apartment that nice in San Francisco as a single father working at Starbucks? This movie is pretty much an ad for Starbucks but even Starbucks, in it's product placement, can't pretend to pay a mentally disabled single father a living wage. Also starring Michelle Pfeiffer as an angry lawyer who learns a thing or two from this simple father and they might have fucked in some cut scene in this movie. We're fairly certain. Does Sam get to keep custody of his daughter? Well, you'll have to sit though many “choices” to find out OR you can hear us tell it. Welcome to THE TRUE NORTH COLLECTIVE℠ PODCAST: SEASON 3! With co-hosts Rachel Bellotti (she/her) and Jenell Riesner (she/her), this is a gathering of un-sugar-coated conversations celebrating the untold stories of everyday people fearlessly finding and living their true north. In our own search to discover and live from our TRUE NORTH, we continue to meet many interesting, courageous people from all walks of life, doing all sorts of amazing things to live life in their own unique way. Stories from all over the world. Stories with heart. Stories with grit. Stories with plot twists. Stories going untold - until now. This season, we celebrate these untold stories of everyday people who are fearlessly living their true north and inspiring each of us to do the same. Today, we talk to Jessie Nelson (they/them), Inclusivity Consultant focused on work from the lens of equity and inclusion in the pursuit of social justice. Jessie is the owner of Kith + Common, a diversity and inclusion consultancy, and they are an amazing human doing amazing things to move new and necessary conversations to the forefront of society that allow all humans to be seen, heard, and have a voice. We unpack self-exploration and radical self-acceptance as a way to accept those whom we deem different from ourselves, and how you do that through making mistakes and fucking it up along the way. We acknowledge self-oppression, societal marginalization, comparison, and colonization in the process of honoring the differences within and among us as we come together to make the world a significantly more inclusive place through diversity. This is a heavy hitter and an incredibly important, vulnerable, and impactful conversation. *note: this episode includes explicit language appropriate for those ages 16+ RESOURCES MENTIONED: Bunny hug Toque Spice Girls Kith + Common Music from: https://www.jukedeck.com/ 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS: What to do when you first start using they/them pronouns and you feel nervous or uncomfortable that you might mess it up or offend this person?Pause + breathe into your belly. Acknowledge that you are new at this. Ask the person what pronoun they prefer to use for themselves. Try it + know you will mess it up sometimes, but keep going. Don’t apologize for saying the wrong thing as that forces the receiver to have to handle your emotions + make you feel better, which is actually more awkward. Instead as you get it wrong, simply pause, correct + keep going. Keep practicing. The one thing we all have in common is that we are all different - every single one of us. And from this space, instead of alienating and rejecting and being afraid of what’s different, can we normalize “being different” as a universal trait and get curious about what makes each of us different to understand how we can come together and rally around our differences and find a place of equity for all of us? What could the world look like then? And by sharing our unique voice and our differences, we broaden the picture of humanity You ARE going to fuck it up, you ARE going to get it wrong when you are first trying something new and when you are engaging in new language and new topics. And it’s ok. Keep going. Radically accept that you aren’t perfect and the only way to not fuck it up is to first fuck it up. Start the conversations and do your best and ask the dumb questions and keep practicing so you can do better each time. And keep getting curious even when you think you’ve got it because there is always, always, always more to learn, even when you think you are an expert. And you may feel all of those things as you listen to this episode today as well. What I'm going to invite you to do right now is to not turn it off, not leave the room. I want you to lean into the discomfort, because I truly believe that where there's discomfort, there is growth and I think this conversation is a huge catalyst for my own growth. On this episode, I’m rejoined by one of the funniest people I know, Jessie Nelson. We pick up where we left off (we last recorded 10 months ago) and what’s changed since then. Jessie shares their work of diversity and inclusion through shifting organizational behaviour. They share what it takes to dismantle and relearn behaviours and habits, and that education is a marathon, not a sprint. We chat stinky foods, escaping NXIVM and the social constructs of subscribing to gender identity. We dive into emotional labour and avoiding tokenization in social media. Use the code 'KILTER' over at DESIGN BUILD GROW to receive a special discount on their tools and resources for small business owners.
Everyone deserves to be seen, valued, and heard in their fullest expression and Jessie Nelson is a badass advocate for exactly that, promoting equality and diversity in communities and businesses throughout the world. Identifying as gender fluid, Jessie has devoted their life to starting important conversations that create safe spaces for all people to come as they are. In this wide-ranging discussion, we talk about what it feels like to come out of the closet, why pronouns matter, what 'being an ally' means, how society and culture influence gender roles, and a whole lot more. This was a fascinating and fun discussion and I learned a lot from Jessie. I am sure you will, too. Nicolette Robinson is an award winning actress and was most recently cast as Jenna , the lead in the Broadway musical, "Waitress." Born and raised in Los Angeles and married to the Hamilton Tony Award winning actor Leslie Odom Jr. , Nicolette opens up about her struggles and triumphs and takes us on an emotional journey that gives listeners an honest and beautiful account of what is is to live the life of an artist. This fall, Robinson made her Broadway debut stepping into the lead role of “Jenna” in the multiple Tony Award nominated musical, WAITRESS. With a book by Jessie Nelson, music by Sara Bareilles, and direction by Diane Paulus, the show has played to full audiences over almost 1,000 performances. On September 4, 2018, Robinson became the first African-American woman and the first mother to play the lead role. Robinson appeared Off-Broadway in the 2015 production of BROOKLYNITE at the Vineyard Theatre, directed by Michael Mayer from a book he co-wrote with Peter Lerman, which earned a 2015 Off Broadway Alliance Award nomination for Best New Musical. She also starred in the new musical, INVISIBLE THREAD, for director Diane Paulus and Second Stage Theatre. Of her performance, Time Out New York wrote that Robinson was “poised and possessed of an ethereal soprano… marvelous.” INVISIBLE THREAD began its life as WITNESS UGANDA – in which Robinson also starred – with book, music, and lyrics by Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews. It was based on the true story of Matthews' humanitarian trips to Uganda, and his work to fund his nonprofit, Uganda Project. The musical premiered in February 2014 at Cambridge's American Repertory Theater before transferring to Off-Broadway. Robinson also co-starred in Barrington Stage Company’s A LITTLE MORE ALIVE, with book, music, and lyrics by Nick Blaemire. In this heartfelt and original folk-pop musical, two estranged brothers reunite at their childhood home after their mother’s funeral. An unexpected revelation distorts their memories and uncovers secrets. Robinson starred as ‘Lizzie’, the hospice worker who’d been caring for the mother, and the Berkshire Eagle called her “luminous.” On television, Robinson co-starred with Ruth Wilson and Dominic West as ‘Jane’ on Showtime’s Golden Globe Award-winning drama series, THE AFFAIR. She has also appeared on HART OF DIXIE, UNFORGETTABLE, PERFECT COUPLES, and COLD CASE, among others. Nicolette received the Princess Grade Award for Theater and is a graduate of the University of California Los Angeles School of Theater, Film, & Television. She is primarily based in Los Angeles, where she resides with her husband, Leslie Odom Jr., and their baby daughter.
