In this special episode, Dr. Murthy sits down with Sara Bareilles, Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter and actress, and Celia Keenan-Bolger, Tony award-winning singer and actress. You may know more about them as performers than you do about their experiences with mental health, but this conversation will change that. As two very good friends who are warm, funny, and genuine, this conversation is an intimate portrait of their friendship and its importance to mental health. Their conversation explores questions many of us have on our minds: How do you prioritize friendship when the world demands us to be so productive? What does it mean to show up for one another? And how do you overcome questions of self-worth and find the courage to speak openly about your mental health? As you listen, we hope you feel their friendship effect, too. Sara Bareilles closes out the episode with a surprise performance. This episode was recorded LIVE in New York. Special thanks to the 92NY for hosting. (03:55) How did Sara Bareilles and Celia Keenan-Bolger meet and become good friends? (08:33) How can we make friends and have healthy social lives as we get older? (18:03) Is there a difference between the way men and women make friends in middle age? (25:54) How do Sara Bareilles and Celia Keenan-Bolger create the space for friendship in a world that's always asking them to be more productive? (33:24) How do Sara Bareilles and Celia Keenan-Bolger balance online activity with real-world friendships? (44:02) Where did Sara Bareilles and Celia Keenan-Bolger find the courage and clarity to speak openly about their mental health? (52:41) How have Sara Bareilles and Celia Keenan-Bolger dealt with feelings about lack of self-worth when they arise? (01:02:19) What are some of Dr. Murthy's and his guests' favorite lyrics? (01:12:52) A special performance by Sara Bareilles We'd love to hear from you! Send us a note at housecalls@hhs.gov with your feedback & ideas. Waitress the Musical: The National Tour is coming to The Stranahan Theatre (February 17-20) and Gabriella Marzetta, who plays Dawn in the cast, took time out of her very busy schedule to talk to us, and tell us how amazing the entire experience has been from casting to tour. Tickets https://www.ticketsales.com/stranahan-theatre/44492/Waitress?gclid=Cj0KCQiA0eOPBhCGARIsAFIwTs6qgPAf2zgg_XFGLMURyTmiaTLL3gbZ1dFxoLB1OpywLnsekGF8nbYaAl0kEALw_wcB Based on the 2007 film of the same name, written by Adrienne Shelly, the musical tells the story of Jenna Hunterson, a waitress in an unhappy marriage to her husband Earl. When Jenna unexpectedly becomes pregnant she begins an affair with her gynecologist Dr. Jim Pomatter. Looking for ways out she sees a pie contest and its grand prize as her chance. Dawn is the “shy and quirky” type, who longs for a true love. Marzetta's so infectious and endearing as Dawn, that she could easily teach a master's class. She lands the one-liners with ease, which put smiles on the audience's faces.” -Adrian Gomez (Albuquerque Journal) Gabriella Marzetta https://gabriellamarzetta.com/ Gabriella is a versatile actor/singer/dancer with a wellspring of depth, a lighthearted quirk with quick comedic timing and an earthy, animated youthful spirit. A lover of collaborative and intimate environments, Gabriella has great talent in building strong ensembles and creating work that is honest, vulnerable, and thought provoking. She has been consistently working since graduating from CAP21 May of 2016. She studied a multitude of styles and techniques such as Meisner, Shaw, Shakespeare, Chekov, Mask Work, Lecoq, On Camera Technique, TV/Film, Clowning, and Linklater Technique. She has a natural intuition that reads strong on stage/screen, loves all things that include a jam session with some dope in the moment harmony, classic rock and folk (Joni Mitchell/Brandi Carlile's #1 fan) is a midwestern gal at heart and LOVES to make people laugh. Gabriella grew up in St. Charles and Geneva, Illinois (about 45 minutes outside of Chicago) and spent most of her childhood playing in the mud and cornfields of Oglesby, Illinois at her grandma and grandpa's house. Very shy as a child, she spent most of her elementary school and middle school days holed up in her house teaching herself songs on the piano and guitar and creating intricate stories on The Sims or playingBarbies, along with writing scripts and filming an assortment of media from her solo talk show "Gab's Corner" to her Barbie Soap Opera "Average" starring the Mary-Kate Olsen barbie doll, to her legendary music videos (most notably her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.) The first time she stepped into the spotlight was when she first sang in front of a crowd at age 10. It started with her father persuading her into auditioning for the school talent show by buying her the Daphne (Ala Scooby Doo) Barbie Doll. From that moment on, Gabriella continued to be known for her shy exterior and powerhouse voice. She continued down the path of performing by becoming an avid community theatre participant, took acting/dance classes/piano and guitar lessons growing up and even assisted theatre classes for children at different theatre companies as a teenager, resulting in a more confident and extraverted version of Gabriella. Who would have thought putting an extremely introverted child in the arts would help her flourish and realize her full potential?! (jokes...but really. thank god(s) for ART)
Episode 64 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is writer, comedian, and Lucille Lortel Award nominated actor Kevin Zak. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Kevin discovered his love for performing and took it upon himself to find a way of turning that into a career. While in college he decided to take initiative and started applying for internships. This led to him heading out to Los Angeles for an internship on the 7th Season of THE ELLEN DEGENERES SHOW. Several months in, he received an offer for a performing job he had auditioned for in NYC prior to leaving for Los Angeles. That offer was to join the cast of the U.S. Tour of the iconic Broadway musical CATS as a swing. As a swing he covered a large portion of the male roles, including Rum Tum Tugger. After a year touring North America (including Hawaii) with CATS, he segued into various jobs including a year on a Disney Cruise ship playing countless roles in the Disney productions. His performing career had finally kicked-off. In 2016, Kevin was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award as Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for CLINTON: The Musical. Kevin is creator and co-book writer of BLOODY BLOODY JESSICA FLETCHER, a musical parody of TV series MURDER, SHE WROTE, which is currently being developed by Tony Award winning producer Hal Luftig for the Off-Broadway stage. Listen to a 8 year olds view and review on Waitress the musical
You guys, I just have to go ahead and admit it, I have a full on Broadway crush on today’s guest, THREE time Tony nominee, Christopher Fitzgerald. I know, I know, I know, it’s probably inappropriate to call a full grown man adorable, but I can’t help it, he’s so…..Adorable. Of course, he’s also insanely talented. If you’re one of the lucky ones who has gotten to see the new musical, "Waitress," you know what I’m talking about. In the role of Oogie, sure, he may not appear until about 50 minutes into the first act, but when he arrives, he completely steals the show. Chris began working professionally in New York in the late 90s. One of his first big gigs in town was the somewhat controversial Terrance McNally play "Corpus Christi." Actually, strike the word somewhat from that sentence, it was COMPLETELY controversial and I was so excited to get the chance to talk to him about it here. In addition to about ten thousand other credits, he, of course originated the role of Boq in the 2003 smash hit "Wicked," he earned his first Tony Award nomination in 2007 for originating the role of Igor in "Young Frankenstein," and he earned his second Tony nomination for originating the role of Og in the 2009 production of "Finian’s Rainbow." He earned his third Tony nomination, of course, for "Waitress." He was such a delight. I’m counting the seconds until we get to talk again. But not, like, in a creepy way.Enjoy!
