In the words of Terry Ray:"I  can't remember not wanting to be an actor.  To be fair, I can barely remember having hair, but still.  It's a passion I've fought hard to nurture and a dream I've never given up on, even when it defied all odds and all logic... and believe me, it usually did... Then one day I decided to quit waiting for the phone to ring for that one line as the theater manager on 7th HEAVEN (of course I used an example that I booked) and create my own opportunities by adding the hyphenates writer-producer to the acting thang.  I teamed with Larry LaFond and we amazingly hit a home run our first time at bat (look at me with the sports metaphors) with the incredibly successful little short film GAYDAR, which was in over 120 film festivals, won a ton of awards and was recently named by California Independent Film Festival as one of the 20 Best Comedy Short Films of all time. Larry and I also made a short film called THE COST OF LIVING, a way too timely comedy about life after global co-starring Jim J. Bullock, Molly Hagan & Greg Mullavey.  (More film festivals and awards).I'm the creator, writer and star of HERE TV's first original sitcom FROM HERE ON OUT (available on Amazon Prime) with Juliet Mills as well as the co-creator-writer-producer-star (sharing that "co" with Wendy Michaels) of MY SISTER IS SO GAY (Amazon Prime) with Loni Anderson as my mother.   I got to co-star in 5 seasons of Michael Vaccaro's star-studded comedy CHILD OF THE 70s.  I wrote and co-created the game show MODD COUPLES now playing on Hulu, I co-wrote the 2017 TV movie LOVE UNPLUGGED.  My new show,  TV THERAPY features a different classic TV character (played once again by the original actor) in a therapy session today (with me as the doctor) with all the issue they would currently have...  Since 2016 I've been starring in ELECTRICITY (my debut as a playwright)....Mel England as my co-star we became  the longest running play in Palm Springs, performing in two venues at the same time: as an immersive theater experience inside a real Palm Springs hotel room and also on stage as Oscar's Bar & Cabaret Theater and then moving to The Desert Rose Playhouse as our final venue and we prepare for an Off-Broadway run.  I'm  the first instructor at the famed Actor's Lab's new Palm Springs branch of their acting school.   Maybe my master plan is starting to work"!          -Terry Ray                                                                                                                                                                                   Epilogue:  Terry's  latest play is THE LINCOLN DEBATE which explores the possibility that  Lincoln was actually gay.  It premiered in Palm Springs in December 2022 and will be returning in the Spring of 2023 at The Bent Theatre- Palm Spring's newest and only gay theatre.  Terry is also the managing director of The Bent.See Terry's full bio and other fun info at: http://www.terryray.tvPhoto: Copyright Wilkinson/2023Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

David Millbern, Emmy winning actor-producer talks about his fabulous must-see documentary “100 Years Of Men In Love: The Accidental Collection” with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. The film focuses on Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell's extensive collection of vintage photographs of men in love from 1859 to 1959. They accumulated their vintage photos over the years from flea markets, family archives and estate sales across the country. The film captures a time period when male partnerships were illegal so the poses were often subtle but still a bold statement of their bonds. It's also a history of photography from professional portraits created on tintypes to amateur snapshots taken by these brave gay couples who wanted to capture their relationships in this new medium regardless of the possible consequences. Millbern was attracted to this subject matter after discovering an old tintype of his great uncles that he has now framed and proudly displays in his home. The project was a huge undertaking for David chronicling Nini and Treadwell's collection of over 3700 photos into an hour long moving documentary that reflects our LGBTQ community's history of loving relationships spanning over 10 decades. It's crucial for all generations from all races and sexualities to see this fascinating film to further understand that our LGBTQ community has always existed and that love is universal. Set to music with narration by Millbern and interviews with the curators of the collection Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell, “100 Years Of Men In Love” was produced by William Clift, Paul Colichman and Millbern. We talked to David about his inspiration for creating this film and his spin on our LGBTQ issues.  David Millbern first emerged as a child actor and by the age of 17 he had already studied and worked with famed acting guru Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio in NYC. After graduating from Northwestern University a role on ABC's “General Hospital” brought him to Los Angeles where he was discovered by Roger Corman who starred David in his first feature film “The Slumber Party Massacre” which became a cult favorite and produced 2 sequels. Many more feature film roles followed including Sir Ian McKellen's doctor in the Oscar-winning “Gods and Monsters”. He has also appeared in numerous Lifetime Network movies. In 2021 Millbern won the Daytime Emmy Award for “Girls' Voices Now” in the Outstanding Short Form Children's Programing Category. “Girls' Voices Now” amplifies the voices of young women from underrepresented communities in Los Angeles by teaching documentary filmmaking. “100 Years Of Men In Love: The Accidental Collection” is currently available on HERE-TV. A story about food, sex, vomit, and the socio-political history of Hungary. Listen in as me and my guest, Jan-David, talk through this delightfully strange and critically acclaimed foreign film. Written and directed by György Pálfi (His Master's Voice, Free Fall, Hukkle), the Los Angeles Times called it a "grotesquely bizarre allegory on life in Hungary" and Film Threat said it was "a devious little nightmare." All are correct, but there is more to this Hungarian-Austrian-French cinematic collaboration than strange and freakish sights. Within there is a moving story about love, life, desire for acceptance, belonging, and dealing with the sins of the father -- you just need to look past the surprising amount of vomit and fire-breathing dicks to see it. It tells the story of three generations of men from World War II to present day, starting with the hapless and bullied soldier Morosgoványi Vendel, followed by competitive speed eater Balatony Kálmán, and finally his taxidermist son Balatony Lajoska. Follow as the lives of these men are equal parts guided by their choices, the socio-political climate of the times, and fate itself. What follows offers a glimpse into life from a small village home where leering eyes watch bathroom activities to living in the big city where the pressures of the past and present weigh heavier and heavier with each passing day. While not exactly graphic (until the final 15 minutes), this film does have some visuals that are as equally compelling as they are disturbing. This is European surrealism at it's finest, folks! The film is currently available on HereTV via Amazon Prime and DVD.

Joanne Filan is my absolute favorite person, and comic to travel on the road with. We've done clubs, colleges, theatres, for the past four years calling ourselves "The Misfits Of Comedy" and were going strong before the pandemic hit but we'll be back on the road touring again in the fall with some summer dates sprinkled in between. We goofed around a lot during this episode and I wouldn't have it any other way. Enjoy! Joanne has had numerous TV and media appearances, including Hulu, Fox, Amazon, Here TV, Comedy Time TV, and in "Comics Favorite Jokes" in the NY Post. She can also be seen in a new documentary entitled “Words: An Exploration of Identity”. Joanne has taken part in festivals and competitions as well, from The New York Underground Comedy Festival to the Women in Comedy Festival in Boston, to the recent Ladies of Laughter Competition. She has ventured into the college circuit- hosting, featuring, and headlining in events at Bryn Mawr College, Monmouth and Lehigh Universities, and many more. She also proudly performs for the US Troops overseas. Her writing side has also come into play as she has just finished co-writing a TV pilot and is also a regular guest lecturer for creative writing classes at St. John's University- ensuring her creativity will go on, despite any side effects.   Website: www.upstreamcomedy.com

#40 - Alex Wyse: "Oh, the Humanity!"

“I don't feel good about myself in the day unless I'm making something.” This inspiring and hysterical episode is just two gay, Jewish boys kibbitzing about our trajectories in the theatre while breaking down stereotypes and expectations. If you're a fan of the hit web series Indoor Boys, breaking heteronormitve barriers, selling projects, and… The Hindenburg… then this episode is for you.  Alex Wyse is an accomplished actor in tv/film and Broadway who not only performs, but his hyphens also include writer, director, and producer. From his earliest memories of being an aspiring child magician, he realized he too can also write a song, write plays, and create. After a college experience that was less than favorable, he began to write on his own work out of necessity. Like many multi-hyphenates, Alex also ran into the statement many people tell us - which is, “You have to pick one thing.” Together, Michael and Alex break down the idea of why picking one art form is outdated and, quite frankly, not helpful. The world today is more receptive to the multi-hyphenate than ever before, but people do still believe artists have to be stuck in the binary. How can your art defy genre and expectations?  Alex and writing/directing partner Wes Taylor have also struck gold. Together, they wrote an Emmy Nominated character in their webseries Indoor Boys, which Michael produced. Telling stories that influence change, no matter how big or small, is what Alex is about. Through whatever his hyphen, Alex wants to give space to people to tell the stories they are meant to tell. This episode was recorded on the day a straight actor was nominated for a Golden Globe for portraying a gay man, which infuriates Alex and goes against what Alex stands for. Alex says, “The way I can be a social advocate is through my writing.” Alex Wyse is an actor, writer, director, and producer. He co-created the digital series “Indoor Boys,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award, won twelve Indie Series Awards, and was acquired by Here TV. He has been seen on Broadway in Waitress, Spring Awakening, Lysistrata Jones, on Tour in Wicked, off Broadway in Ride the Cyclone, Bare, and Triassic Parq, and regionally at Hartford Stage, Deaf West, Paper Mill Playhouse, Cleveland Play House, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Huntington Theatre Company, and more. He's been seen on TV in “Iron Fist,” “Masters of Sex,” “NCIS: LA,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Modern Family,” “Agent X,” “Bad Judge,” “A to Z,” “Switched at Birth,” and “Bored to Death,” and on film in X/Y and Dating My Mother. He co-produced What the Constitution Means to Me on Broadway and on Tour. BFA: Boston University. In the segment You Got A Question? Michael features a question from Heather A., who asks if her daughter should go to college for theatre and what is the difference between a BA and a BFA? International drag darling Sherry Vine and former Here-TV executive Josh Rosenzweig are combining their style, humor and sensibility into a one-stop, digital destination for all of the world’s LGBTQ entertainment needs. gaySVTVworld premieres February 14 with original shows, specials, music videos, short films and more: all free at YouTube.com/MissSherryVine. “The world needs gaySVTVworld because they are hungry for original programming from top queer talent,” says Sherry Vine. “We got ‘em all: Haus Of Mimosa, Pickles, David Serrano, Chris Semers … and this is only the beginning.” “gaySVTVworld is created by and for LGBTQ audiences,” adds Josh Rosenzweig. “Nobody is going to tell our stories like we will. While our visibility has increased enormously over the last decade with the launch of several LGBT television networks, it is essential that the community have an online space to call our own. A destination where we can go to find like-minded artists and feel the power of the collective.” While gaySVTVworld draws inspiration from a traditional television model, it also presents a modern digital age spin with all shows under-seven minutes long. “We’re offering short content so people can view several episodes in the same amount of time as one traditional TV show,” explains Vine. “Maybe you only have five free minutes on your way to work or during a lunch break. That’s enough time to catch a hilarious episode of Fashion Puhleez on your smart phone!” The network will kick off its first season with a slate of eight programs, releasing daily, beginning with Sunday’s Sherry and the Greek, an original talk series starring Vine and Chris Semers, discussing a variety of fun topics and performing skits, characters, and musical numbers. On Monday, queer notables share their pop culture picks on EduGAYtion. Then Tuesday, The Rachel Zoe Show meets Project Runway in Fashion Puhleez, with lead players in the beauty industry discussing fashion, club couture and styling. House of Mimosa presents The Anita & Gina Marie Show, a comedic show that chronicles the daily antics of two women as they cause mayhem throughout Astoria, Queens (singing out – or rather, airing out – all their dirty laundry) gets viewers over hump day. Then its Throwback Thursdays with Pickles, a look back at a public access show that offers a glimpse into the gay, downtown art and nightlife scene of New York in the nineties. Celebrate the end of the workweek with The Flames of Hell’s Kitchen, a telanovela about the life of Sherry Vine, her manager Gloria, assistant Busted and sexy Latino boyfriend, Diego. In the first season, Sherry wins big, loses everything, slips back into a life of drugs, and faces an intervention. The show stars David Serrano, Busted, Patty McKeever and Al McKeever. Finally, on Saturday, it’s movie night as gaySVTVworld presents The SVTV Short Film Fest, an online festival dedicated to spotlighting the very best LGBTQ filmmakers from around the world. Each week is a new short film along with interviews from the filmmakers and special bonus features. In addition, What’s In Your Purse?, a hilarious two-minute segment featuring Vine cornering nightlife celebrities and forcing them to reveal the contents of their bags, will run throughout the week. “We knew launching a network was an ambitious endeavor but there are so many things we didn’t think of,” admits Vine. “Josh and I and our amazing team have literally been working every day on gaySVTVworld for almost a year now.” “So much of that time has been spent on brainstorming ideas, reaching out to people we wanted to work with and deciding on a slate we felt confident about,” continues Rosenzweig. “We have several shows that are in various stages of development. Our intention is to continue to keep rolling out new programs, music videos and comedy sketches.” Sherry Vine’s hilarious video parodies have made her a YouTube sensation, being viewed over 14,000,000 times! She got her start in downtown NYC but today tours the world with her live singing and comedy shows. Vine has appeared on the off-Broadway stage, in numerous films including Stonewall and Wigstock and she starred in two seasons of Here TV’s variety show, She’s Living For This, produced and directed by Josh Rosenzweig. Josh Rosenzweig served as SVP of Here TV for ten years where he produced over two hundred hours of television programming including She’s Living For This and Heart of Broadway: An Inside Look at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. He was also the host of the hit TV talk show Just Josh. Rosenzweig has directed many music videos, award-winning films and over forty productions for the theater. He has been nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards. gaySVTVworld premieres February 14 at YouTube.com/MissSherryVine. —————————————— Scanlon began her political activism as a child growing up in Arkansas. It's the gender bending episode to top all gender bending episodes, y'all. We've got New York City nightclub performer and comedian Marti Gould Cummings; the return of Sherry Vine & Josh Rosenzweig from Here TV; and, actor and director Christopher Logan up in here, up in here. First up, Marti Gould Cummings drops by to tell us about how he went from his family's Maryland farm to take New York City by storm, befriending the city's Broadway and nightlife entertainers and quickly transforming himself into a unique, gender bending cabaret performer and comedian. He hosts four shows a week, has his own series of web shows, and despite being insanely busy, finds time for activism and he's calling out to his generation to wrap it up before you hit the kitty. You'll just have to listen to hear how that came to be. It's scandalous! Hear Marti at the 20:00 minute mark. Then, we've got the return of our most-frequent Swish guest, the international phenomenon that is Miss Sherry Vine along with her HereTV boss and best friend Josh Rosenzweig. It's always a party when we get together with our old friends after one of Sherry's shows (she was performing at DC's Level One/Cobalt last Friday night) and together we talked about Sherry's newest parody's, originals, and her touring schedule, the return of her television variety show, She's Living for This, what's new at the all-gay network, and much more. Hear all the craziness with Sherry, Josh, Scott & Steve at the 52:58 minute mark. After that, Scott chats with actor and director Christopher Logan. Known best for his role as Patty Melt in the cult classic movie Connie & Carla, Christopher has starred in tons of films and television shows and now he's produced an amazing coffee table book called, dr.a.g., featuring amazing photographs of drag queens from New York to Las Vegas to the queens of RuPaul's Drag Race (including Sherry Vine, too!). It's a great collection, created to support independent film projects and we recommend it highly. Listen in on Christopher at the 1:20:30 mark. The boys also talk about the Inauguration, including the First Lady's bangs; what the gays think of vaginas; same-sex-coupled British monarchs may get to have their offspring claim the thrown; Lindsay Lohan just keeps diggin' a bigger hole; Hasbro is retiring one of the classic Monopoly pieces; It's a mega-show people...and we hope you'll join us for all the fun. This week, we welcome Metro Weekly magazine publisher/editor Randy Shulman to the studio. A longtime movie reviewer, he brings along his picks for this weekend's Academy Awards. And he's as confused as we all are with many of this year's nominations. For one, Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids, asking, "...she's been nominated for pooping in a sink?" If you're in the Washington, DC area this Sunday, go watch the Oscars at Town Danceboutique with Randy, an event to support the DC Center. It's called, Glammer, Glitter & Gold. Catch Randy and the Oscar segment at the 37:50 mark. Then, we've got our very good friend Sherry Vine via Skype. We catch up with her about her upcoming big weekend: Her television variety show She's Living For This premieres on hereTV this Friday, February 24 and she celebrates her 20th anniversary as Sherry at NYC's Barracuda this Sunday, February 26. We can never get enough of our global parody queen...and we have her latest song that she recorded with the great Pandora Boxx, a parody of Madonna's Give Me All Your Love, now called, Give Me All Your Muff...of course. Sherry kicks in at the 1:10:50 mark. We also welcome Justin Luke, our Gay on the Ground in New York City, back for a second week in a row! Live from the streets of Hell's Kitchen, he chats with B Magazine publisher Peter Ian Cummings. He talks about the magazine's 18-35 year old demographic, standing up for peoples' rights to express their sexuality, how he thinks gay people are fundamentally different than straight people (it's not just who we sleep with, he says), his thoughts on the mainstream press and their coverage of the gays, his rant against smoking and drinking, and much more. It's a fun, slightly controversial conversation we think you'll dig. Justin and Peter start at the 1:26:35 mark. All that, plus all of our signature brand of pop culture & gay news commentary, including Scott & Steve's separate trips to New York City where they saw Broadway's Priscilla Queen of the Desert (see it!); Madonna's tour; Whitney's funeral; our love of actress Kristen Bell; Chris Brown & Rihanna back together; Ricky Martin's Details interview; more about NBC's Smash; and, we announce our newest Twitter winner. How did it get to be Thanksgiving time already? Time sure flies when you're making gay comedy magic! This week, the show is out a day early with a jam packed (if not slightly hot; Scott had the miss up a bit too high) new episode. First up, the boys break down Sunday night's American Music Awards; they discuss Tori Spelling's boobs on Twitter; marvel at Arnold Schwartzeneggar's hot son Patrick; Steve and Scott tell ya how their personal trainers are trying to KILL them; and, they tell you why Lady Gaga is being honored at next month's Trevor Live event. Then, Dale, Scott & Steve welcome INAYA DAY to the show. She's a world-renown, chart topping dance and house singer/songwriter who also dabbles in funk, R&B, gospel, musical theater and jazz. Besides her own classics like "Nasty Girl" and "Keep Pushin'," this lady pens tunes for countless others, she's started her own record company, and she's in two very active bands. She lives and breathes all kinds of great music, and it shows. You'll dig our extended chat with this very friendly first lady of the dance floor. But after that, we have another queen for you! That's right, our favorite NYC drag superstar is back and with the boys LIVE in the new studio. SHERRY VINE spills the beans on her new television variety show for HERE-TV called "She's Living For This"--we can't wait for it to debut in February--and behind the scenes secrets about how she writes her hits and what her parents think when they accidentally Google her! Funny stuff. Of course the boys also continue their Christmas and Atlantis Cruise countdowns; Dale shares with you his favorite holiday movie; and, back to Gaga again to discuss her very out-of-the-box Thanksgiving special. Episode 160 is called, "Turkey Time," because it's our Thanksgiving episode, y'all. This week's show is brought to you by AdamMale.com (use the offer code "SWISH" for 50% off any item, free shipping and three free DVD's) and Atlantis Events' January 29, 2012 Caribbean cruise.
