Did you know that chronic disease is the number one thing killing us in 2023? Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) kill 41 million people each year worldwide, equivalent to 71% of all deaths globally. That statistic is staggering. Don't become a statistic! Instead listen to today's episode of Food Heals with Katherine Maslen, Naturopath and Founder of The Shift Clinics in Australia. When addressing the cause of chronic disease, the number one thing we need to talk about is gut health. What do cancer, autoimmune diseases, allergies, mental health and fertility all have in common? The gut.    That's right! Your microbiome does everything from digesting food to absorbing minerals to regulating your immune system and your hormones. All disease begins in the gut… and that's where healing begins as well! So in this week's episode we couldn't wait to interview an international expert on the topic of gut health, Katherine Maslen.   Katherine got into nutrition after witnessing a close friend's journey through lupus, an autoimmune disease. As she got sicker, her medicine cabinet grew, yet none of these medications had any positive effect on her health. She passed away at just 52.    Katherine knew there just had to be a better way. This is what led her to create the Shift Clinic, an international wellness company that is changing the face of health and empowering people to take control of their healing journey.    Check out Katherine's book Get Well Stay Well to discover the secrets to get back in touch with your body and start thriving.  Listen to the Shift Podcast.  Thank You to Our Sponsors! Katherine explained PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome and there are a number of subtypes. When she treats a patient who may have PCOS she looks at how their hormone levels fluctuate during the month.  When she treats patients she tries to look at the big picture instead of just treating the PCOS. She points out it's very treatable.   PCOS & Your Mental Health  She shares the possible link between hormone receptors and the way they influence a person's mental health.  In relation to PCOS, women can have elevated testosterone. Welcome to The Shift Patient Series with naturopath, nutritionist and author Katherine Maslen as she explores the state of human health, the dysfunction of the health industry and provides people with the tools, knowledge and understanding to make the shift in their lives.  In the Patient Series of The Shift, Katherine talks with real people about their health journeys, the roadblocks along the way and what it takes to make a shift.  If you want to make the shift towards more informed decisions regarding better health, then this podcast is for you. In this episode we have patient Jane, who has lived with several chronic health issues throughout her life including SIBO, period pain and anxiety.  Jane's healing journey began 8 years ago and as she acknowledges the work really only began once she was ready to pay attention to her emotional health and the relationship that it has with her physical health and symptoms. One of Jane's biggest roadblocks was taking responsibility for her own state of health.  It can be confronting to accept that the decisions we make in life can have a positive or negative impact on our health, and that we are ultimately responsible for our health.  This has been a huge part of the journey for Jane as she describes throughout this interview.  In this episode Katherine and Jane explore: A look at Jane's health from childhood to present and the health issues that have followed her throughout her life Exploring emotional trauma and how it links to some of Jane's physical health problems Jane shares her experience with hormones and the difficulties she has had around her periods The importance of understanding a patient's full health story to achieve true collaborative health What it took for Jane to take her symptoms seriously and seek help Exploring the emotions connected to physical symptoms like bloating and how they made Jane feel Building a better relationship with food and making mealtimes positive Being diagnosed with SIBO and how the effect it had on Jane's life Conversation around period pain and hormone health A look at where Jane's health is at currently and some of the bigger lessons she has learned so far Links: The Shift Season 1

Some of you may know that I’ve had difficulties with adrenal fatigue for a while now. I’ve always suspected that my gut health might have something to do with it, especially my penchant for sugar! What I didn’t realise is that gut health is virtually connected to everything. I’m talking stress, fertility, hormones, weight and so much more. In this episode, I’m joined by naturopath, nutritionist and author Katherine Maslen, who enlightens me about all things gut health — it’s truly fascinating! Join Katherine and me as she talks about what a healthy digestive system should look like, how sugar feeds the yeast in your gut and how fixing our gut health first can have a huge impact on so many areas of your health. She also explains the ketogenic diet, the difference between pre- and probiotics, and how veggies should be the cornerstone of your weekly meal plan.   Key takeaways: Your gut is a very complex system that starts with your mouth and is followed by your stomach, small intestine, pancreas and liver. If you have a problem in one area it can easily impact another area. If you have a lot of bloating, Katherine recommends eliminating wheat and dairy for two weeks. If you don’t see any change, it might be time to see a naturopath. Your gut microbiome is made up of 2–3 kilos of bacteria, yeast, viruses and archaea organisms, all operating in a delicate balance. Katherine’s podcast “The Shift” is a video documentary series featuring interviews with gut health experts. Katherine recommends eating 2 types of probiotic food daily, such as kimchi, sauerkraut, miso or yoghurt with live cultures.   Links and resources: The Shift with Katherine Maslen (podcast) https://www.theshiftclinic.com/ https://theshiftclinic.mykajabi.com/gut-shift https://www.theshiftclinic.com/shift-anywhere/   Connect: Listen to other episodes of Talking Clean with Irene Join my private podcast Facebook Group Follow Nourished Life on Facebook Follow Nourished Life on Instagram
