This episode began as a cool conversation without much structure with two guys in visual arts who create music as a passion. But it turned into a deeper conversation about the creative processes for both mediums. Kevin Mellon is a storyboard artist for Archer & Hitmonkey, among a lot of other credits. David Heatley has drawn illustrations for The New Yorker, The New York Times, and more in addition to writing books. Both have also written and released albums of music recently and the combination of visual arts and music was so interesting to me to hear how they work in both mediums. I was surprised to learn the differences in their approaches to each medium. And the agree on the importance on sharing the process of creation with others. Seeing works in progress when they were young was a huge encouragement to them. And they both use each medium differently to work through their issues. So check out this episode, check out kevinmellon.com and davidheatley.com to hear their music and see their art. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. November 17, 2011 - After our last Talksplode episode about making comics with Blair Butler and Charles Soule from the writer’s perspective, we’re coming at it from the drawing table. Joining Josh Flanagan are Declan Shalvey (Thunderbolts, Northlanders) and Kevin Mellon (Heart, Gearhead). The conversation is long and ranges through many aspects of being an artist in today’s comic book industry. We talk about some of the challenges a comic book artist faces, and how writer and artist collaborate. There’s a lot of information to be gained, learning from people who’ve been there, and are still working at climbing their ladder, whatever that ladder may be. October 6, 2011 - This is a very cool episode of Talksplode. We’ve got Blair Butler of G4′s Attack of the Show and writer of the upcoming Image series, Heart, and Charles Soule, writer of 27, also from Image Comics, but we’re not just going to be plugging books. Along with Josh Flanagan, also a comic book writer looking to get published, the discussion is all about making comics, breaking in, getting started, finding artists, and the real things involved in the process. From marketing to design to scripting to page layout, we cover a lot of ground in this lengthy and diverse discussion about what’s it’s like to make professional, independent comics today. Part of the discussion was based on this piece, Making Comics: Why I’ve Failed So Far. Make sure to follow Blair and Charles on Twitter for updates on their comic book adventures. You can also go to Blair’s website and Charles’ blog. To read some of Josh’s comic work, you can find that here. Look for Heart from Blair Butler and Kevin Mellon in November, and read 27: The Second Set, in shops now, both from Image. You can also read the first issue of Dixon’s Notch, written by Josh Flanagan on Graphicly. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this Halloween edition of Word Balloon, host John Siuntres chats with artist Phil Hester, who's been flexing his writer muscles and has a slate of current and upcoming monster related stories. We caught Phil as he was recovering from a cold, but still excited aboutgetting more scripting work alongside his upcoming art projects. You'll hear about Hester taking the reins on THE DARKNESS for Top Cow, and a new direction for the series main character Jackie Estacado. Also the very funny "werewolf in recovery" series THIRTEEN STEPS, co-written with Chuck Satterlee and drawn by Kevin Mellon for Desperado. But Phil show his sensitive side too, in a poingant indie short story featured in The Villard Books collection POSTCARDS: "True Stories That Never Happened". On the art side, Phil previews the December start of his run on Superman Confidential, teaming up with his infamous inking partner Ande Parks and writer B Clay Moore. Next Year will be busy for Phil, writing and drawing a Daredevil/Magdalena crossoverfor Marvel/Top Cow in February, and in the spring he and artist Andy Kuhn bring back FIREBREATHER for Image Comics.
