This week, I talk with Rob Hart and Alex Segura about their new space thriller Dark Space.  We dive into their world building, their joint writing process, and how speculative fiction helps us examine present truths.Dark Space SynopsisIf life were fair, ace pilot Jose Carriles should have ended up a desk jockey like his former friend Corin Timony, back on the lunar colony of New Destiny. Instead, he's the pilot of the Mosaic—a massive ship taking the Interstellar Union's first-ever mission to outside our solar system.Timony should have been the best spy at the Bazaar, the lunar colony's international intelligence arm. Instead, she's been demoted to admin duties like monitoring long-range communications. She has no one to blame but herself—and maybe Carriles. But when the Mosaic experiences a series of strange malfunctions and Carriles is forced to take a wild gamble to save the ship, he begins to suspect the reasons behind the exploratory mission weren't exactly on the up-and-up.At the same time, Timony's old instincts kick in as she realizes the distress call she received from the Mosaic has been wiped without a trace. As people start to end up dead and loyalties are tested, Timony and Carriles find themselves entangled in a star-spanning conspiracy that drags them through the darkest corners of their government—and their own personal failures—and face-to-face with a reckoning that could destroy humanity as we know it.

Hello and welcome to the Talkhouse Podcast, I'm Josh Modell. On this week's episode we've got a pair of friends who, as you'll hear, have provided emotional support and advice to each other throughout interesting, winding careers over the past couple of decades; Mary Timony and Joe Wong. Timony is probably best known as the leader of the ‘90s indie-rock band Helium, but her catalog goes far beyond it. Prior to Helium, Timony came up in the DC punk scene as part of the band Autoclave, and after she's been part of Wild Flag with members of Sleater-Kinney, fronted a band called Ex Hex, and released records under her own name. That's mostly why we're here today, because Timony is about to release her first solo record in 15 years, and it's fantastic. It's called Untame the Tiger, and it picks up on some of the psych elements that Timony has wrangled in the past—and even includes a guest appearance by the former drummer of Fairport Convention, Dave Mattacks, as you'll hear in this chat. Untame the Tiger was also produced in part by today's other guest, Joe Wong. It comes out February 23, but check out the song “Dominoes” right here. As I mentioned, today's other guest is Joe Wong, who grew up in Milwaukee and played in indie-rock bands before finding his creative path in two amazing ways: as a composer for TV and film and as a podcast host. He's written music for the likes of Russian Doll and Master of None, and he helms the popular podcast The Trap Set, which originated as a way to spotlight his favorite drummers, but has since expanded into deep and incredible conversations with all kinds of creative folks. But a few years back, partly at the urging of his friend Mary Timony, Wong began writing songs for himself rather than for other people's scores. He just released his second album, Mere Survival, and while it still has late-'60s big-pop vibes, it gets even bigger and weirder than his first. It features not only Timony, but also Pearl Jam's Matt Cameron, among other guests. Check out the title track from Mere Survival right here. This conversation took place shortly after two big release shows for Mere Survival for which Wong gathered a 20-piece band, so you'll hear a bit about that, as well as some thoughts on songwriting itself. Wong and Timony also get deep on how their parents' illnesses brought them together, about self-sabotage and perfectionism, and much more. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Mary TImony and Joe Wong for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great written pieces at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Untame the Tiger (Merge Records) is Mary Timony's first solo album in 15 years, and it's so good, from start to finish. For the uninitiated: Timony's bands have included Helium, Autoclave, Wild Flag, and Ex-Hex.  All fantastic. Last year Rolling Stone named her #95 on the top 200 greatest guitarists of all time.  To get to this stage of excellence, Timony's process involves writing garbage.  "The only thing that works for me is writing a lot of bad stuff I really don't like," she says. Timony writes in the morning then sets it aside. "The most important part of my process is that I have to forget everything I just did, then go about my day. If the song comes back to me, maybe three hours later, then I can judge it. That new person that I am who hasn't written the song has to judge it.  And 99 percent of the time, I don't like it." All the garbage just gave us one hell of an album. *Here's my recent interview with Carrie Brownstein

In a rich culture of dispute, rabbinic voices debate the mystical. Shraga gives us a first-hand creative rereading of one of the most mystical rabbinic passages, the famed ‘Four Who Entered the Orchard' shedding light on its secret history and transformation from a forbidding tale of three, to a cautionary tale of four. The Perennial Philosophy, or Perennialism for short, claims that the depth traditions found within the major world religions all converge upon the same metaphysical vision - namely, the identification of our deepest selves with a divine, transcendental ground. Popularized by Aldous Huxley in his 1945 The Perennial Philosophy it has a natural appeal to many thinking, spiritually inclined individuals - including those who have never explicitly heard of it. - Jon In this debate Jonathan will critique the perennial philosophy; Zevi will defend it. Jonathan Weidenbaum is a professor of philosophy and world religions at Berkeley College. Zevi Slavin is a seeker, a teacher, and creator of Seekers of Unity. Thus, it is not an uneducated essentialist desire, but religious integrity or philosophical urgency that leads those who no longer find an exclusive claim by any single tradition convincing to seek an underlying unity and to investigate the equivalence of symbols under their diversity.” - Charles Davis in his review of Mysticism and Philosophical Analysis, by Steven Katz, ed. Back when I was recording Episode 16 (Quasi, Field Studies) with Mariana Timony of Bandcamp Daily, I had promised that there would be a second part of our discussion forthcoming. This is that second part! Mariana and I spent nearly an hour discussing Quasi drummer/vocalist Janet Weiss' other band (though, sadly, one she is no longer a part of), Sleater-Kinney. We each offer our rankings of the band's studio albums and discuss some of our favorite (and least favorite) tracks from each along the way.Note: I made a comment about Sleater Kinney's The Hot Rock reminding me of “mid-period R.E.M.,” and then went on to cite Fables of the Reconstruction and Life's Rich Pageant as specific albums it reminded me of. As soon as I said this, I realized that, by any reasonable definition, those albums were a part of R.E.M.'s early period. I do think of Murmur and Reckoning as constituting a separate era in the band's discography but failed to come up with a better term for the era I was trying to describe (late-early?).Mariana is on Twitter, and you can follow her at @marianatimony. You can find her writing for Bandcamp Daily here, https://daily.bandcamp.com/contributors/mariana-timony, and her newsletter, The Weird Girls Post, here, https://weirdgirlspost.substack.com/. You can find me (Al) on Twitter at @almelchiorBB or at the account I created for this show, @youmealbum. Would love to hear any comments or questions you have about this episode or the show in general. Since I brought it up several times on this episode, let me know if you'd be interested in hearing Mariana and me talk about Sleater-Kinney's One Beat for a separate episode.1:20 Mariana (re)joins the show2:02 Mariana ranks the Sleater-Kinney albums26:14 Al counts them down

Incoming transmission from Joe Wong. He's an incredibly busy guy: he hosts the Trap Set, a weekly interview podcast he’s helmed since 2015, where he sits down with artists like Mix Master Mike, Sharon Van Etten, Jim Keltner, Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo, among many others. He also makes music for film in TV—you’ve probably heard his work on Master of None, Russian Doll, Awkwafina is Nora From Queens, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Midnight Gospel.    Joe has long played music with artists like Mary Timony of Helium and Marnie Stern, but recently, he released his debut solo long player, Nite Creatures. Produced by Timony, who also plays on it, it finds him joined by members of Flaming Lips, War on Drugs, and that dog. for a set of deeply cinematic psychedelic pop, which brings to mind the mystical lushness of Scott Walker, the Zombies, and Pink Floyd. One of the albums best songs “Dreams Wash Away” was featured in Duncan Trussel’s Midnight Gospel finale on Netflix—one of the most affecting things you’ll see all year, and like that episode, Nite Creatures grapples with mortality and existential dread, but remains vivid, colorful, and beautiful.

“I feel like this band is what I’ve been search for during my entire musical career.” Some pretty strong words from someone who’s been in bands like Helium and Wild Flag — and, of course, there's the matter of all of those solo records. But when Ex Hex takes the stage a few hours after our interview, there’s no question that Mary Timony is in her element. Indie rock, post-punk — all of those subgeneres are rendered moot when the band hits the stage. The trio that tears through a dozen songs in front of a packed Mercury Lounge is a just a good, old fashioned rock band.  Any lingering doubt is put to rest by the two song encore. Having expended all of the songs from their excellent debut, Rips, the band launches into a pair of covers — first Johnny Thunders, then the Real Kids. And everyone goes home satisfied. So, how did Timony arrive at such a state of rock and roll bliss? We reach way back to her days learning classical violin, up through the off-season that she spends teaching guitar to youngsters to get a full picture of her musical journey.
