What's up, dudes? Shawn Robare from Cult Film Club, Crestwood House, and Plastic Rocket Pop and Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ are with me to discuss “Kidd Video!” That's right! We're talking the long lost “Kidd Video Christmas Special!” It's ‘80s cartoon awesomeness re-edited in ‘91 to fill a one hour time slot on WGN. The special consists of 2 episodes of the show, ‘Double Trouble' and ‘Master Blaster Brat.' All the licensed Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, etc., music was removed and replaced with generic Christmas songs. In ‘Double Trouble,' while exploring the tunnels of South Plumbington, the band goes down a drain and is attacked by a giant plunger. They find a message in a bottle and decide to rescue the sender. When they go to free him, they find out that they have rescued Laster Blaster, Master Blaster's identical twin brother. Master Blaster had imprisoned him so that he could take his place as treasurer of South Plumbington and get the town treasure. Master Blaster just needs to find the key to the vault. Once he does, Whiz forges a duplicate key, and Glitter switches them. Laster approaches the town to win his rightful place back as treasurer. Master and Laster's mother shows up to determine who is who, and picks Master Blaster as her favorite rotten son. Master Blaster still steals the treasure, only to find out the treasure is shower heads! The Copy Cats accidentally turn Master Blaster into a toddler. They wicked youths immediately transform nearly the entire town, including Whiz and Carla. While Glitter babysits, Kidd and Ash seek out the sorceress Xenia who possesses a magic aging ray. Eventually the duo overcome her fearsome creatures. After Ash does a Stomp-inspired performance, Kidd and Xenia have a sock hop and they duo takes her magic ray. Soon the townspeople are returned to normal.Evil twins? Check. Dancing sorceress? Got it. Christmas songs edited over the band's hit videos? Whoa, yeah! Cartoons and Cereal is back with Episode 3 and looking back at Kidd Video. The Producer defends his loving of this show at the time and has mathematical proof as to why he loved the show. We do a brief watch along- mostly for the commericals that are imbedded in the video. Grab a bowl of cereal and enjoy!!
I spent my Saturday morning the perfect way: watching cartoons and eating cereal. I get into the specifics of what I watched, but also spin down a road of nostalgia, not just for the shows themselves, but for HOW we used to watch TV and why we're bored by it all now. When the band ends up in a town with a mysterious Pink Sphinx that wakes up to grant a single wish once a year, Whiz is intent on using it to get home -- and if Kidd, Carla, and Ash are too busy awkwardly breakdancing to come with him, he'll just go alone! Will the Copy Cats interfere and steal the wish for their boss Master Blaster? Is the band actually a polycule? What genuinely popular songs were used in the episode, guaranteeing it could never get a proper home video release? And do any of these kids still have careers? We watched Kidd Video, a 1984 show about a teen rock band that is transported into a magic musical realm called The Flipside, where the devious Master Blaster wants to harness their music energy to take over the world. The show starts with live action kids who become animated, voiced by the same actors, and every episode ends with a return to live action for a music video! We talk about how, despite the fact that the show is named after a single character and that character is named Kidd Video, everyone in the band seems like an equal protagonist. We also discuss Hit Clips, vocoders, The Mitchells vs. The Machines, and a fitness center where you pretend to pilot a giant robot, or if you will, a Pacific Gym. Phil loves big giant fighting space robots. Ben has never seen the appeal. Now, after years of in-fighting and insults, Ben is finally conceding to try and understand his friend's genuine obsession with the whole Transformers franchise. As an outsider he's going to learn about all aspects of the Autobots and Decepticons' long history of interplanetary punch-ups over the past four decades from the good to the impossibly rotten. And we start our journey at the very beginning with the opening three-part mini series from 1984 "More Than Meets The Eye". On the way we'll- - learn how YouTube are taking their cue from TV-am; - explore why oil rigs are dangerous and not a right laugh like you thought; - debate how important a "The" is when discussing massive robots; - uncover the Gordon Brittas of the Decepticons; - rage at the toys that never were; - investigate how Ronald Reagan, "Kidd Video" and Richard Pryor fit into all this; - question if a "rear axle" equates to a part of the human body; - reveal which one of us hates Muppet Babies; - and scratch our heads to see so very many wet robots. So if you're a robo fan or metal sceptic, there should be something for you in here. Now to take you for the ride of your life.... ------------------------------------- "Transformers 101: The Education of A Robophobe" is presented by Phil Catterall with Ben Baker who edited it together. If you want more or want to suggest where in the franchise we should go next, let us know via @dontletschart on Twitter or dontletschart@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------

Kidd Video was an animated/live-action Saturday morning show that came out in 1984. It attempted to blend animation, live-action, song covers, and original music aiming to capitalize on the success of MTV. It had success, but not really in North America. This is a look back on a novel idea that just didn't pan out. Show notes: Kidd Video
This week we cover the second half of our favorite and most exhausting event of the year, DragonCon! (If you noticed a shortage of geeks in your area over Labor Day weekend... they were all in Atlanta. And they were all ahead of us in the line at Starbucks.) Including: The Geek Girls Run; Classic Sci-Fi Court (good luck, 1984 Supergirl movie); stars from Doctor Who, Cobra Kai, V, and The Magicians; puppeteer Allan Trautman (from Dinosaurs and yikes, The Letter People!); Tai Chi with Silver Spoons star Erin Gray; our panels on Krypton, Doom Patrol, Pennyworth, Russian Doll, Kidd Video (!), and podcasting for authors; RetroBlasting with 1980s ninjas; a pie-fueled ESO Network gathering; the 30th anniversary of Weird Al's movie UHF; and lots more convention silliness. (Did we find people in costume as the Miser Brothers, the Price is Right yodeling guy, and Toonces the Driving Cat? Yes, yes, and yes.) Also: Ed Begley Jr.'s birthday, and the Top Ten songs this week in 1984. (Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" was at number four... and the future attendees of DragonCon were listening.)
Welcome to an all new episode of Totally Radical Cartoon Podcast. Randy and Phil go to the more obscure side of 80s cartoons as we look at an episode of Kidd Video. A group of kids who have formed a rock band are pulled into a cartoon world where an evil music producer has kidnapped Lionel Richie and using his music so that a group of anthropomorphic cats can play his songs and enslave an entire city.Subscribe to us on itunes: http://apple.co/2GL6IWN and leave a rating and text review. On this episode, Cory and Jeff are joined by their friend Tim Spaulding from Star Wars: In Character and Pass the Popcorn, as well as his Monday night radio show, Rock 101. Since Tim is such a music buff, Jeff thought it would be a great idea to have him on to discuss Kidd Video, since it concerns a band. And, since it was the 80's, the guys also dive into a bowl of OJs cereal and try to figure out why citrus just doesn't work as a cereal flavoring. Its been two months since the last 20th Century Pop! and still another seven days until an officially numbered follow-up. So where are the two hosts? And what have they been up to since the show’s been up to nothing? Unpacking, apparently, as Tim relates in this off-the-cuff-but-on-the-mic diatribe posing as bonus content. Grab a bowl of Frankenberry, because we're flashing back to Arisia (our favorite local science fiction convention), where Kevin moderated a panel called "Cereal and Cartoons: Saturday Mornings Revisited"! Joining Kevin on the panel were filmmaker Kevin Cafferty, Andy Hicks (of the Coal Hill A/V Club podcast), and Karen (of the Foxes in the Hen House podcast)! Among the topics discussed: The Superfriends, Pee Wee's Playhouse, ALF, Captain Bob, Weird Al, Josie and the Pussycats, The Brady Kids, School House Rock, Time for Timer, Gilligan's Planet, Mr. T, Thundarr the Barbarian, Turbo Teen, Kidd Video, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Garfield and Friends, Galaxy High, Hanna Barbera, Filmation, Sid and Marty Krofft, the Friday night preview specials, the Saturday morning TV comic book ads, the continuity errors of Tom and Jerry, the horrors of candlepin bowling, and the eternal curse of Scrappy Doo. And folks, that is not a complete list. Not even close. Listen carefully, and you'll hear Kornflake and the Mayor of Chickentown in the audience too. (Warning: One of them may have been wearing a rubber chicken costume.) This was a crazy fun time, and this is why you all need to hitchhike to Boston and join us at Arisia next year. And that's one to grow on.

We've used the names 'Haim Saban' and 'Shuki Levy' on this show a good number of times, and for good reason; they created some of the catchiest theme songs of the 80s and 90s. Well, this week's sees them as creators (alongside DiC founder Jean Chalopin and MVP Andy Heyward) of a show that revolved entirely around music: 1984's 'Kidd Video;. In this musical adventure, four teenage bandmates are dragged through... some sort of mirror... by some guy... to a place called the flipside? It's something like that; nobody's motivations or characteristics are particularly well explained so we did the best we could with the episodes we watched. All we can really tell you at this point is synths. Lots of Synths.Apologies if Mark sounds a bit... weird. This is his second bout of common cold this year.

We're still in DragonCon recovery mode this week, so instead of a "normal" show, here's something special we've been saving for you. Last summer at CONvergence in Bloomington, Minnesota, Kevin was on a panel about one of our favorite subjects: Saturday morning cartoons! Yikes, what fun -- it's a roomful of crazy people screaming about all their favorite shows, including Super Friends, Adventure Time, Thundarr, Mighty Mouse, Kidd Video, Land of the Lost, Underdog, and a few that we'd never even heard of. (Apparently we really need to check out The Mysterious Cities of Gold...) You'll also hear a couple of Flopcast friends who happened to be in the front row. But that's not all! Kornflake also has this week's National Whatever Day, as well as her latest brush with the law (and without a shirt) story. Oh sure, NOW we have your attention...
Yes, we're in the middle of the holidays, but more importantly, we're in the middle of the 1980s. This week our ongoing 80s coverage brings us to 1984 -- the year of Footloose, The Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, and Footloose. (Footloose is very important, people.) But our focus is Saturday morning, as we present a Top 4 1/2 List of 1984 Saturday morning TV shows. Expect plenty of Muppet Babies and Super Friends, a trip to the Flipside with Kidd Video, and of course, Mr. T. Also: Check your batteries, because it's time for National Flashlight Day. And that's one to grow on.
