One hundred fifty years ago, President Ulysses S. Grant signed an act establishing Yellowstone National Park into law, making it the first national park in the United States, and a cause for celebration in a country still recovering from the devastating Civil War. Not everyone celebrated, though, including Native Americans who had called the land home for thousands of years before white trappers and explorers first experienced the wild majesty of the landscape.  To learn more about the men who championed the creation of the park and the Indigenous resistance to it, I'm joined by historian Dr. Megan Kate Nelson, author of the new book, Saving Yellowstone: Exploration and Preservation in Reconstruction America. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The between-segment song is “The Fellow in Yellowstone Park,” written by Gilbert Fogarty and performed by Kitty Kallen, assisted by Four Chicks and Chuck, in 1949. The song is available in the public domain through the Internet Archive.  The episode image is: “Excelsior Geyser, Yellowstone Park,” Painted by Thomas Moran in 1873. The painting is in the collect of Smithsonian American Art Museum, a gift of Mrs. Armistead Peter III, and is in the public domain. This is The Best of continues this week with a focus on the music of Harry James. Harry had a great tone and an excellent technique that made him one of the leading trumpeters of the swing era. He started his band in 1938 and struggled for a while until he added strings and started playing sentimental favorites that struck a chord with many people during World War 2. He also had an ear for great vocalists and there were many that sang with his band. Some of the great ones were Frank Sinatra, Helen Forrest, Dick Haymes and Kitty Kallen. I hope you enjoy the music of Harry James on our This Is The Best Of series. Thank you all so much for listening. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

The first Forgotten Songs from the Broom Cupboard to be recorded as a podcast. Its the same format as ever, an eclectic mix of lesser known, forgotten and neglected artists and songs. Some 'B' sides too. All on good old 78rpm. Its a Scottish start -  the Trinidad born pianist Winifred Atwell launches us with Highland Boogie. Listen out for the mad bagpipes. A proper pipe band with The Bowhill Colliery Pipe Band next(pictured). They won the Pipe Band World Championship in 1947. Kay Starr, Kitty Kallen, Lonnie Donegan, Bill Haley - with more Boogie. Richard Tauber on a Parlophone Odeon Label is our oldest record - 1942. Otherwise its 1950s all the way. Teresa Brewer was one of the most prolific singers of the 1950s, covering all genres she is reckoned to have recorded over 600 tracks in the decade. Here she sings Wang, Wang Blues. Is it just me or is it rather naughty? Then we have a new discovery for me: Arthur Godfrey, U.S radio and TV broadcaster and entertainer. A troubled man by all accounts. It's an entertaining record though.            There's more of course.

I do a lot of these podcasts sitting here in my big, manly, comfortable, black leather poppa chair in the middle of the night. The middle of the night is a time for strange thoughts. I think it was in the middle of the night that Louie Pasteur said "Ok everybody...boil the milk. When everybody woke up they said, "Boiled milk...Louieeee?" I don't remember who discovered atoms or if it was in the middle of the night. Big Louie says "You can't trust atoms, because they make up everything." How about this for weird. Everything you see is made up of atoms, but atoms are way too small to see. Catherine Zeta Jones is a bunch of atoms. I can't see her atoms, but I am delighted to be able to see her. I don't understand that, but I do appreciate her. Better be careful of getting too chummy with your nearby atoms. Remember what happens if you drop an atom. You get a mushroom shaped cloud. Atoms are so small that a lump of sugar contains as many atoms as there are stars in the universe. Not just the milky way, the whole universe...one lump of sugar. Atoms are wild little things. And little things mean a lot. That's the title of a fine old song from the 1950s. Kitty Kallen sang it. They called her Pretty Kitty. She got up close and personal with the mic, and she sang. "Blow me a kiss from across the room, say I look nice when I'm not. Touch my hair as you pass my chair, little things mean a lot." Sounds like the advice Big Louie gives to the guys in his Louie Louie Generation."
