Bridging the Gap: CryptoPunks & the Convergence of Digital & Traditional Art

Object Subject Form

How can digital art cement its place in contemporary culture? Can NFTs and blockchain technology continue to bridge the gap between artists and major institutions? As dialogue around digital art continues to evolve, questions of legitimacy, value, and long-term impact remain central to the conversation. In this episode of Object Subject Form, we examine how digital art is gaining recognition in major institutions and how emerging technologies are reshaping the art world. Currently the GM of CryptoPunks, Natalie Stone leads the iconic collection that ignited a contemporary digital art movement, with pieces in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, LACMA, and ICA Miami. She played a key role in CryptoPunks: Free to Claim, a Phaidon-published project with Zak Group that chronicles the rise of CryptoPunks and their cultural significance. Formerly at Google, she led Google I/O, crafted VR/AR experiences with artists like Childish Gambino and LCD Soundsystem, and developed an experimental new media program for artists working in AI.   With a deep understanding of both traditional and digital art ecosystems, Natalie offers a unique perspective on the evolving dynamics of curation, collection, and creative innovation. In this conversation, we discuss the challenges and opportunities facing digital artists today, the role of traditional art institutions in Web3, and how blockchain technology is redefining provenance, ownership, and artistic value. Launched by Larva Labs in 2017, CryptoPunks consists of 10,000 unique pixel-art characters that became a symbol of digital ownership and the CryptoArt movement. Stored on the Ethereum blockchain, CryptoPunks are more than just collectibles—they've played a pivotal role in shaping conversations around provenance, value, and the integration of blockchain technology in the art world. — Connect with Natalie on X: https://x.com/naughtaliestone — Natalie's website: https://nataliestone.co/ — Connect with Natalie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stonenatalie/ — CryptoPunks: https://cryptopunks.app/ — Learn more about CryptoPunks on the Brand Hub: https://hub.cryptopunks.app/ — Follow CryptoPunks on X: https://x.com/cryptopunksnfts — CryptoPunks Book @ Phaidon: https://www.phaidon.com/store/fashion-and-pop-culture/cryptopunks-free-to-claim-9781838669300/ — Connect with simon: https://zaap.bio/simonclowes

While NFT projects grew in popularity, so too did brand recognition — and the interest of talent representatives to sign them on. United Talent Agency (UTA) was among the first in August of 2021, when it signed CryptoPunks and Meebits creators Larva Labs, followed by Deadfellaz in April of this year. Other talent representatives got into web3 as well, such as Creative Artists Agency (CAA) signing on the NFT collector 0xb1 in October 2021 and even hiring a Chief Metaverse Officer in August of this year.  But why did talent representatives like UTA sign on these NFT brands at all? Why do NFT brands need talent representation?  To get to the heart of these questions, MK sat down with UTA's head of web3, Lesley Silverman. Silverman has been at UTA for the past seven years, educating artists on the utility of web3 and helping interested artists launch their web3 brand. Before joining UTA, Silverman worked as a fine arts lawyer, and she says this experience shaped how she lead UTA through the NFT space.  Episode 80 of Season 4 of The Scoop was recorded remotely with The Block's MK Manoylov and Lesley Silverman, Head of Web3 at United Talent Agency. For today's show we welcome back Brandon Buchanan, to discuss the intriguing results of our 2022 NFT Awards where we surveyed friends of the show and look at the top four PFPs. This category of the awards was by far the most popular, receiving more votes than any other. And we have to be honest, there were some surprises! We get to hear some really interesting perspectives from Brandon on our top four projects, Doodles, Nouns, Bored Ape Yacht Club, and CryptoPunks. We discuss Pharrell Williams' involvement with Doodles, how Bored Ape Yacht Club rewrote the playbook for NFTs, the unusual roadmap that Nouns have created for themselves, and why CryptoPunks are still the most important player in the history of the game. Key Points From This Episode: Building a brand beyond the world of NFTs; Brandon's thoughts on funding and investment.  Weighing Pharrell Williams' decision to come on board with Doodles and what this means.  Nouns' daily options and the implications of this relating to pricing and demand.  Looking at the Nouns trajectory and the long horizon they have laid out.  Board Ape Yacht Club's serious impact on the PFP sphere, and their polarising status. Misunderstandings about the way that Bored Ape flipped the crypto playbook.  Considering the influence of fashion, memes, and more general rules of branding.  Why CryptoPunks are the Michael Jordan of the NFT PFP space!  Thoughts on the role of the CryptoPunks founders and why they broke the mould.  Tweetables: “I like that we are moving away from this idea that PFPs are just there to flex. I like this idea that NFTs can be a gateway to community, a gateway to participating in governance.” — Brandon Buchanan [0:07:14] “I think Bored Ape's contribution to the NFT space, particularly with the the PFPs has to be revered, they have done so much across the board.” — Brandon Buchanan [0:33:51] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:s http://www.brandonkbuchanan.com/ (Brandon Buchanan) https://www.linkedin.com/in/bkbuchanan/ (Brandon Buchanan on LinkedIn)  https://doodles.app/ (Doodles) https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/money-and-power/a36489849/pharrell-williams-interview-black-ambition/ (Pharrell Williams) https://www.ninachanelabney.com/ (Nina Chanel Abney) https://pitchfork.com/artists/30022-meek-mill/ (Meek Mill) http://www.jeffkoons.com/ (Jeff Koons)  https://nouns.wtf/ (Nouns) https://www.moonbirds.xyz/ (Moonbirds) https://boredapeyachtclub.com/%23/ (Bored Ape Yacht Club) https://larvalabs.com/ (Larva Labs) https://www.larvalabs.com/cryptopunks (CryptoPunks) https://www.cryptoadz.io/ (CrypToadz) https://www.supremenewyork.com/ (Supreme) https://www.yuga.com/ (Yuga Labs)  https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jordami01.html (Michael Jordan) https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/russebi01.html (Bill Russell) https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/marcel-duchamp-1036 (Marcel Duchamp) https://www.warhol.org/andy-warhols-life/ (Andy Warhol) https://www.floorisrising.com/ (Floor Is Rising)

NFTs and the metaverse are buzzwords often thrown around these days, but do you really know what those mean? And if you do, are you ready to embrace those? In this episode, Erik Cabral shares an insightful conversation with Mario Nawfal as they talk about what NFTs are, how they work, and the concept of the metaverse. In 2012, Mario entered the sales world, selling blenders door-to-door and with only $300 in his pocket. Employing unconventional marketing strategies and efficient systems, and helping build a team of global contractors, Mario helped grow the company from $1 million to $10 million in two years. Fast-forward to today, Mario is now in the NFT space as the co-founder and CEO of NFT Technologies. He offers investors access to NFTs by curating the portfolios and partnerships as well as building relationships in the space. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Mario's introduction to the crypto space NFTs explained The safety aspect of NFTs Examples of NFTs and ways to verify The concept of the metaverse Risks in the digital world Embracing the F word Reasons to buy a podcast Episode Highlights: The World of NFTs Prior to 2017, you couldn't actually technologically own something without a central entity saying you own it. Then in 2017, a technology known as non-fungible tokens or NFTs emerged. This opens up massive possibilities and disintermediation, which means you can own something without needing a central party that says you own it. You can also move it from one place to another and send it to wherever you want, just like in the physical world. Are NFTs Safe? The human brain is designed to seek safety as part of the survival instinct – and one of those things is resisting change. It's one of the worst things to have as an entrepreneur because change leads to opportunities. The human brain overestimates the short-term impact of innovation and underestimates its long-term potential. But it's normal for innovation to take time, and in the long-term, NFTs are inevitable because, as Mario puts it, they make life better. Examples of NFTs Types of NFTs include artworks and collectibles, such as CryptoPunks, one of the early mainstream NFTs which are a bunch of ugly photos. There are 10,000 of them that were created by a company called Larva Labs. The cheapest one is $300,000. Today, owning a CryptoPunk represents a signal or a status symbol. It's like wearing a Rolex in the physical world or driving a Rolls Royce. Understanding the Metaverse People expect the metaverse to bring equality to the world, be more open, and do things that are very utopian. Unfortunately, the human species is very imperfect and this will continue in the digital world. Greed and emotions will still be there. A lot of the issues we face in the physical world will still exist in the virtual world. But every technology over the last few 100 years has generally brought a better quality of life to us as a species. Otherwise, we wouldn't be using it. Just around one year ago, two literary bros from Miami decided to launch a business venture. It was a couple weeks after Beeple's Everydays had sold for $69 million at Christie's and NFTs were taking the art world by storm. Still, few could have guessed at the time that their little company, called Yuga Labs, would produce a series of cartoon apes that would become some of the most successful—and divisive—characters in the entire NFT universe. "It's hard to justify that a Bored Ape NFT is worth $300,000 based on the art... they're cartoon apes" says crypto journalist Amy Castor. "They're cute, you know, but is it worth that kind of money?" For many regular people, and a whole host of celebrities, the answer is yes. Today, Yuga Labs has more than 60 employees and more than $2 billion in total sales. Over the past few weeks, it has gone on a tear announcing new initiatives, from the acquisition of CryptoPunks and Meebits, arguably the two other most popular NFT series, to the launch of Apecoin, its own brand of cryptocurrency. Larva Labs now hopes to create what is essentially a Marvel universe from all this intellectual property—and make a lot of money along the way. But Castor, for one, says that Yuga Labs's recent acquisitions are antithetical to the core tenets that NFT evangelists tout. "The whole idea about NFTs is that they're supposed to be decentralized. It's not supposed to be one outfit having control of the top three most expensive NFT projects" she says. "They've created a perceived value out of thin air so that they can then monetize that brand." Its strategy shows us what the future of the NFT space might look like. But it remains unclear whether this future will benefit everyday NFT collectors and enthusiasts as much as the big investors and founders of companies like Yuga Labs. To unpack the wild and winding story of Yuga Labs and the Bored Ape Yacht Club, executive editor Julia Halperin spoke with Amy Castor, who chronicled the rise of this phenomenon on Artnet News.

Throughout 2021, a huge portion of news and media cycles surrounded their coverage on the emergence and explosion in popularity of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs. Operating as a new class of digital assets, the concept of NFTs has caused a ripple effect throughout industries and markets the world over. While 2021 may have been the year that saw NFTs gaining traction, 2022 may be the year that they truly take off.In this article, we'll cover the top trends to watch regarding NFTs in 2022 with experts Martin Stava (Co-founder, STRV) and Barron Solomon (Founder & CEO, Solo Music). Keep reading to learn more about each of these trends!1. PFPsA profile picture, or PFP for short, is a type of NFT that has grown immensely in popularity alongside the broader notion of NFTs, themselves. For example, in 2017, CryptoPunks defined an entire category of PFPs through their generative NFT collection that grants users the ability to represent their internet identity with one of their NFTs as an online avatar or PFP. More recently, social media platform Twitter introduced verified hexagonal avatars as part of their Twitter Blue program. This tells us that this trend is far from over and is bound to continue growing throughout 2022.2. IRL UtilityNFTs have already showcased their ability to serve as a utility in real life, or “IRL,” beyond the online digital realms of Discord, OpenSea, Twitter, or other platforms. As NFTs act as a token, they can be utilized as a gateway to access certain IRL experiences (i.e. private memberships). Some examples of top-performing NFT membership groups include Kevin Rose's PROOF Collective, Gary Vee's Veefriends, and Adidas Originals's Into The Metaverse NFT, the latter of which allows NFT holders to redeem physical merchandise in multiple stages and keep the NFT as a gateway to their future metaverse experiences. The Flyfish Club, another NFT membership program instituted by Vaynerchuk, shows how restaurants can leverage NFTs for private memberships, exclusivity, and rewards. Looking deeper into 2022, we can easily imagine how this model can translate to other IRL experiences and activities like wellness, sports clubs, and more.3. 3D Avatars & InteroperabilityInteroperability refers to the basic ability of different computerized products or systems to readily connect and exchange information with one another — in either implementation or access — without restriction. For instance, Larva Labs recently released an application programming interface (API) that allows games and other projects access to the 3D models of Meebits. Another group of 3D avatars released as NFTs includes SnoopDog's The Doggies, a collection of 3D avatars playable in the sandbox-style environment within the Metaverse. Jadu Mirrorverse provides these avatars

But, real quick.  Did you notice that the Matic network was down? Yeah. For like 11 hours. From March 10th at 5:50 pm UTC to about 4 AM on the 11th. No need for anyone to panic. All the user's funds are safe. The team has investigated and explained the issue. Seems like there was an issue related to a planned upgrade. The Heimdall Node. The Heimdall implementation gets used by one of two layers on the proof-of-stake chain. Short version is, there was a bug in the upgrade that caused consensus to break. That prevented them from itching two thirds consensus. Anyway, around 4 am UTC they released a hotfix. This got things working again, but the bridge itself won't be reactivated until they've chased down the issue. Their tweet said We appreciate your support during this time and have an update: we have deployed a temporary hotfix to unblock the Bor chain and resume producing blocks on the Polygon chain. While this solution is temporary, the team is working on implementing a longer-term upgrade to fix the Heimdall issue. So, anyway, problem resolved, everyone's money is safe. So there we go. Non-fungible tokens - or NFTs as they're known - are already big business, whether you've heard about them or not. But when it comes to those creating them, there's a huge gender disparity. We hear from two female artists - Michele Pred in Oakland and Yiying Lu from San Francisco - plus Liana Zavo who runs her own PR and marketing company. Women make up just 16% of all NFT artists - according to ArtTactic, a London-based company that focuses on research and data in the world of art. Anders Petterson from the group explains why. Plus Maliha Abidi, an artist, author and activist, and the creator of Women Rise NFT, says she's determined to make a change. Why are NFTs valuable today? How did they come into existence? And what do NFTs actually mean for The Web? Jamie goes back in time to revisit Colored Coins, Counterparty, and the genesis of Crypto Punks with their creators, such as Matt Hall of Larva Labs, alongside early collectors & creators Silly Tuna, Josie, Shaban Shaame and more. This act documents the key moments in the early history of NFTs and helps frame what NFTs are and most importantly, why now?  We hear from Gaby Dizon, cofounder of Yield Guild Games, a leading Play-to-Earn community, on why the COVID Lockdown tipped the scales towards the Metaverse - bringing digital things more meaning in our lives and subsequent value.  Jamie talks to Beeple about the iconic $69m sale that propelled NFTs into the mainstream, the build up through a series of smaller sales, and why he chose NFTs as the medium for his iconic piece; The First 5000 Days But to explain how the market got this key moment listeners are taken back to the 2017 crypto bull run and the genesis perhaps its first moment of mainstream attention; Cryptokitties. As collector Silly Tuna puts it, this is where Ethereum found product-market fit. Cats, on a blockchain. And when its success tested the very limits of the Ethereum itself.  However, we don't leave it there. We go even further back in time to before Cryptokitties and even Ethereum, to explore Colored Coins on Bitcoin guided by J Dog and other early adopters. Matt Hall talks about the creation of Crypto Punks, how they were initially given away for free when they didn't even use the term NFT and how crazy it is to even him how successful they have gone on to become selling for millions of dollars at major auction houses like Sotheby's. And we finish the fact talking to Cyrus Adkisson and Etheria, arguably the first NFT ever created on Ethereum.  This episode of the history and future of NFTs, an audio documentary, was narrated by Jamie Burke. The documentary was written, produced and edited by Pet Berisha.    This episode of the history and future of NFTs featured: Ryan Gill Robness Marguerite deCourcelle Angie Taylor Gauthier Zuppinger Jay Delay Hans Artblock Josie  JOY JIN  Silly Tuna Loopify Johan Unger Stephen Young Sean Gardner Sebastian Borget Duncan Cockfoster MetaDreamer Gabby Dizon Jeff Zirlin Beeple Jeremy Johnson AKA J Dog Shaban Shaame Matt Hall Cyrus Adkisson

In 2017 Canadian software developers, Matt Hall, and John Watkinson debuted what would become a landmark project in the early crypto art movement, the CryptoPunks. Released through their company Larva Labs, the CryptoPunks consisted of 10,000 unique collectible characters whose chain of title would be tracked on the Ethereum blockchain. Each punk is a 24 by 24 pixel avatar whose individual traits were generated algorithmically. From Mohawks to shaved heads, from eye patches to colored eyeshadow and even from human men and women to apes, zombies, and aliens, every punk is one of a kind, but all would look perfectly at home intimidating a businessman in a classic eight bit Nintendo game. Although Hall and Watkinson kept a thousand CryptoPunks for themselves, the duo released the other 9,000 punks for free to any Ethereum users willing to pay the gas fees to claim them back in 2017. But the punks value on the secondary market and their presence in popular culture have exploded in the years since. In June 2021, a single alien punk sold at Sotheby's for $11.75 million. Two months later, Visa paid $150,000 to acquire a CryptoPunk for its corporate collection and at this September's Met gala Reddit, co-founder Alexis Ohanian wore a badge depicting a CryptoPunk he bought for his wife, tennis superstar, Serena Williams, because he thought it resembled her. But the crypto punks have also brought together a tight knit global community who see the project and the wider crypto art space as so much more than driver of record sales and red carpet moments. As part of art Artnet's effort to bridge the gap between the crypto community and the world of fine art, Artnet's Director of NFTs, Jiayin Chen, recently held a round table discussion with three early collectors of Crypto Punks, also known within the community simply as OGs.  They are B, one of the only known women among the original crypto punk claimants, Claire Silver, who is now a renowned crypto artist in her own rights and Mr. 703, who originally claimed well over 700 crypto punks and currently ranks as the fifth largest collector of the series worldwide. Jiayin connected with the trio over zoom a few days before the third annual NFT NYC conference kicked off in Time Square.

Five Reasons Why Visa's Foray into NFTs is a Watershed Moment for Blockchain

Visa just spent $150,000 for a non-fungible token "NFT" of a digital punk from the CryptoPunks collection from the Larva Labs studio. This is a watershed moment for a number of reasons:1) Visa is a monolith of a traditional financial institution finally cow-towing to a crypto project.Visa, and traditional financial USD fiat-dependent institutions, have long been antithetical to any type of cryptocurrency or blockchain developments. The growth of this ecosystem takes away from activity in the traditional, antiquated financial markets, of which Visa has a considerable stake and vested interest in its continued utility.2) It's a huge PR boost for Larva Labs & the use case of expensive art on the blockchain. While most NFTs are less than $100 in value, there is also a handful of projects that see 6-figure sales as a regularity. For some, you can't even buy any of the project's NFTs without shelling out the cost of the downpayment on a house or the whole house itself. Many would have scoffed at well-heeled, rational investors dipping heavily into their pockets to include this digital art into the alternative asset segment of their portfolio. It creates further visibility for the important work that Larva Labs is doing to build out this nascent industry of digital art, long ridiculed as having no meaningful value beyond that with a corporation will throw in an artists direction to fashion something together. The narrative forever, and continues to be, is that art is seemingly devoid of value without having been hand painted with oils or pastels and signed by the artist themselves in a 1/1 or as part of a limited series. We're talking about art that can be resold at auction with real collectibility value. Do not buy art on a cruise ship or anything other than authorized, or signed, by the artist themselves and be exceptionally careful when it's authorized "by the estate" of an artist. These works largely have no value.3) OpenSea has been crowned King of the NFT platformsAs the home of CryptoPunks, this represents an important feat for OpenSea, which has been an absolute behemoth in the space with an avalanche of activity and the de facto home for NFTs.The secret sauce of with OpenSea was their willingness to let everyone with a Web 3.0 wallet, like Metamask, on that platform. Other platforms were curating for the most sellable artists and hoped to market them on their own, but, in the process, they left out 99% of artists, who felt spurned, and these artists brought their fans to OpenSea to see their exhibited works.Further, the willingness of OpenSea to start integrating blockchains other than Ethereum, like Polygon, represents a demonstrated willingness to be nimble in terms of alternative blockchain architectures. Many in the ecosystem are Ethereum maximalists and prefer to absorb the high gas fees associated with using this, presently, hugely congested network as opposed to entertaining bringing NFTs to other blockchains like xDAI, Polygon, Binance Smart Chain, or any number of different Smart Contract capable blockchains.4) It introduces a level of seriousness to the NFT discussion. For years, the NFT community was mocked, slighted, and any committed artist to this space was seen as scraping the last dredges of monetization to support their fledging art to debase themselves to hocking NFTs, the ultimate belittlement to corral what could be collected in terms of an earnings. Well-known contemporary artists would not lower themselves to introduce an NFT offering, much like film actors, for the longest time, looked down upon TV work as often embarrassing to have to take on, the sign that one's career was on the descent rather than ascent. Now it seems every major movie star either is in a TV project for Netflix, or another production company, or their in-house production companies have a TV project in the works. Hopefully NFTs continue to enjoy a shift of this scope. It's perfectly rational, however, that if someone is given a one person show in the Chelsea Art District in Manhattan that one would immediately take it, and that's what Damien Hurst, and other contemporary artist visionaries, regularly do. It puts them in front of an elite set of art buyers who appreciate the 1-on-1 experience of interfacing with an artist to learn a bit of their style, but also revel in the flattering attention that whales of the art collecting market demand and enjoy. No alt text provided for this imageArtists do this but now they are also doing NFTs as well.5) It introduces NFTs to, effectively, the world. The number of people who have a Visa card is jaw-dropping: 353 million in the US and 803 million outside of the US, cumulatively 1.141 billion.Visa's efforts to trumpet their foray into the space is illuminating NFTs on the world stage in a way that crypto enthusiasts and mass adoption advocates have been pining for since the birth of blockchain.Instead of introducing NFTs to the world through the prism of "Why would someone pay $69 million for an image you could copy and paste to your desktop for free," you're seeing, "Wow, it looks like even long-standing mainstream financial institutions are relenting to the pressure to be seen as first-movers in tech, with the hopes of earning some level of accompanying positive press praising their forethought. Maybe there's something to this blockchain deal." This does much to change the collective narrative.

NFTs: The booming world of digital art

This week The Cultural Frontline is looking into the art world's latest phenomenon…NFTs or Non Fungible Tokens. And if you're wondering exactly what that means, join Sophia Smith Galer to find out more about this new form of digital art. NFTs hit the headlines this year when an NFT artwork by the American digital artist Beeple sold at auction for a record breaking $69.3 million. So what are NFTs and how do they work? NFTs use a lot of energy which is bad for the environment, but they can open up new possibilities for artists. Tim Schneider, Art Business Editor at Artnet News, explains the pros and cons. Despite million pound sales from the likes of Canadian singer Grimes and American celebrity socialite Paris Hilton, the majority of artists commanding high sales from NFT artworks are men. Scottish art collector and co-founder of international collective Women of Crypto Art Etta Tottie and Senegalese artist and member of Her Story DAO Linda Rebeiz explain how they're working to make the world of NFT art more diverse. Artists can sell NFTs via online platforms and they are attracting a new type of buyer: young, digitally savvy and familiar with crypto currency. Now the art world is getting involved with an exhibition of NFT art at UCCA Lab in Beijing and the launch of Institut, an “art world” platform to exhibit and sell NFTs. American writer, artist and NFT expert Kenny Schachter explains how the traditional art world feels about this digital disruption. NFTs have made headlines for big sales and celebrity connections but one creative couple in Indonesia is using an NFT to raise money for charity. In April 2021, the Indonesian navy submarine, KRI Nanggala 402, sank off the coast of Bali, killing all 53 crew members. Sound designer Ruanth Chrisley Thyssen and illustrator and influencer Cindy Thyssen have joined forces do something to mark the event with an artwork, 53 Never Forgotten.
