To the landscape architect Walter Hood, “place” is a nebulous concept made meaningful only through the illumination of its history and the people who have inhabited it. Hood has dedicated his career to this very perspective through his roles as creative director and founder of Hood Design Studio in Oakland, California, and as chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning at UC Berkeley, where he has taught since 1990. His projects include a series of conceptual gardens at the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina; the grounds of the campus of the tech company Nvidia in Santa Clara, California; and the landscape of San Francisco's de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. Currently, he's at work on the wayfinding for the Barack Obama Presidential Library in Chicago; a new park in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina; and twin memorials for Emory University's campuses in Oxford and Atlanta, Georgia. On this episode, Hood discusses the intersection of social justice and landscape architecture, his arguments against what we traditionally deem “memorials” or “monuments,” and the power of language to literally shape the world around us.Special thanks to our Season 8 sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes: [03:34] Black Landscapes Matter[03:39] The World They Made Together[08:18] American Academy in Rome[08:27] Carthage[08:55] Loma Prieta Earthquake[13:48] Monticello[13:50] National Memorial for Peace and Justice[13:53] Gadsden's Wharf[14:28] Lorraine Motel[16:07] Montgomery County Justice Center[18:40] Double Sights[24:37] Macon Yards[25:32] The Power of Place[28:59] Confederate Obelisk[29:55] Splash Pad Park[30:16] Lafayette Square Park[38:21] International African American Museum[38:25] “Native(s)”[39:54] Water Table[40:51] McColl Park[42:28] Twin Memorials[47:11] Octagon House[48:43] de Young Museum[51:13] The Broad[54:14] The Future of Nostalgia[54:53] Blues & Jazz Landscape Improvisations[58:01] Solar Strand[01:06:02] Art Institute of Chicago

The Beyond The Fog Radio team is hard at work recording and editing new episodes for Season 4, releasing in August! In the meantime, we're revisiting some of our favorite interviews from Seasons 2 and 3. This week, we listen back to our conversation with former Mayor of San Francisco Art Agnos (Season 3 Episode 04) — politician, social worker, and game-changer. Art Agnos served as Mayor from 1988–1992. During his term, he fought nepotism in both Fire and Police Departments to pave the way for the city's second African-American Police Chief and first female Fire Chief. He also allowed regular citizens to sit on city commissions, appointed minorities to city positions, and bolstered civilian supervision within the Police Department. However, his biggest contribution was the removal of the Embarcadero Freeway in the aftermath of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. This decision, while initially unpopular, opened San Francisco's waterfront to a new audience, and inspired cities from Seattle to Toronto to remove or reconfigure their own elevated freeways. Though his decision cost him a second term, Agnos doesn't regret it. The City of San Francisco has only appreciated it more as years have passed, and dedicated its most recent public pier — Pier 14 — to Agnos and his long-lasting contributions. We are so excited to re-release our interview with the incomparable and insightful Art Agnos.

Politician, social worker, and champion of liberalism in San Francisco, former Mayor Art Agnos has left a lasting mark on our city's offices and landscape. Through his 1988-1992 term, he worked to break up nepotism in the Fire and Police Departments, paving the way for our city's second African American Police Chief and female Fire Chief. He made it possible for regular citizens to sit on city commissions. Agnos even appointed minorities, lesbians and gays to city positions, and bolstered civilian supervision within the Police Department. Agnos is best known for his leadership through the aftermath of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake and was responsible for removing the Embarcadero Freeway as a result. Not only did it open up the Waterfront for people to enjoy the city's beauty, but his decision later became the model for replacing other cities' elevated freeways from Seattle to Toronto. Though it cost him his job due to politics, Agnos' decision is still appreciated daily by locals and visitors alike when they visit the Embarcadero. The city has since dedicated its most recent public pier, Pier 14, to honor Agnos' leadership in opening our city's Waterfront. Since the inception of the HealthCare Untold Podcast, I wanted to record an episode about Latinos' own version of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. When the earthquake hit, I was the Executive Director of Salud Para La Gente, a farmworker clinic in Watsonville, and what I experienced and witnessed first-hand during this ordeal was life changing.  These same feelings were sparked during the Covid-19 Pandemic as our podcast captured the voices and work of Latinos and others who stepped up and organized to provide the  support and services to those in need in LatinX communities around the country. It's been 32 years since the 1989 Loma Prieta staff and volunteers of  Salud Para La Gente  served over 10,000 people with medical and mental health services as well as with clothing, food and monetary support. This type of timely and life-saving support is exactly what our community organizations are doing around the country today, support all made possible by committed  staff, funders, donors, and volunteers.  This podcast episodes includes testimonials of those involved in response to the earthquake and a discussion with Dr. Sandra Hernandez, CEO of the California Healthcare Foundation, about the traditional phases of disaster management: preparedness, response and recovery. The lessons learned from today's responses  to the California Fires and Covid-19 Pandemic are the same: the importance of serving our most vulnerable communities with dignity and respect. As Mayor Oscar Rios shares the multiple improvements of Latinx civic leadership  since the earthquake 32 years ago in Watsonville, I can't help but wonder about the future for our communities post Covid-19. My experiences have shown over and again that when people come together to solve a crisis, we can permanently make the world a better place. This has become my central thesis and philosophy for public health as you will hear reflected in our podcast, HealthCare UnTold.

He graduated from highly competitive Wilton High School and attended Franklin and Marshall College, where he earned a degree in English. Still in high school, he started writing for his local newspaper and developed an interest in journalism. Into college he continued his passion for reporting, working for local papers. Growing up and in college, he competed in wrestling, lacrosse, and rugby. Perhaps from a combination of birth order and sports, that competitive streak remains a big part of his personality. He brought his intensity to private investigations. In his 20’s he worked as a general assignment and crime reporter for daily papers in Virginia, Florida, and California, including the Contra Costa Times. He earned admission to and graduated from UC-Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. His investigative thesis about a Vietnam combat veteran and post-traumatic stress disorder earned faculty honors. He reported on the Loma Prieta Earthquake, the East Bay Hills wildfire, and Hurricane Andrew. In Florida, he covered numerous local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Reporting instilled traits he brought to investigations: how to interview a variety of people, resourcefulness, being accurate with facts, knowledge of public records, and meeting tight deadlines.Spencer worked under several licensed private investigators to obtain the hours in order to qualify for the private investigator test and licensing in California. He filled his early years with a variety of cases, from insurance defense investigations to criminal defense and infidelity investigations. One area he quickly gravitated to and excelled at was personal injury investigations. He started working on major cases for members of the Alameda Contra Costa Trial Lawyers Association. His success in personal injury investigations has played a part in numerous settlements well over $1 million. At every step in his career, he has tried to keep learning and improving. He prides himself on being able to get along with and help lawyers and all their staff. He was voted Best Private Investigator/Skip Tracer by readers of The Recorder legal newspaper. His professional associations included memberships in: Alameda Contra Costa Trial Lawyers, San Francisco Trial Lawyers, and Santa Clara County Trial Lawyers Association. He is also active in Alameda and Contra Costa County bar associations. He attends many continuing education programs dealing with investigations and legal experts.Spencer’s professional writing has also continued. In addition to publishing articles in local bar association magazines, he also contributes to Pursuit Magazine, a leading online national magazine of private investigators. A couple of years ago, his literary non-fiction book Private Eye Confidential, Stories From A Real P.I., was published by 99: The Press. An event like the Loma Prieta Earthquake can look pretty different through the eyes of those who were very young at the time, like a fifteen-year-old exploring the rubble on his bike, or a one-year-old too young to appreciate (at the time) her narrow escape from a falling bookshelf, or the boy whose dad was the park ranger in The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park—the epicenter of the earthquake.
