Last month, EMV Capital, a fund management subsidiary of British investment firm NetScientific, took over Martlet Capital, a Cambridge, UK-focused investor that had been the corporate venture arm of aerospace and defence company Marshall Group for nine years until 2021. The decision was the natural conclusion to EMV's earlier decision to become an investor in Martlet and allows the investor to further tap into the Cambridge cluster, NetScientific CEO Ilian Iliev says.

NetScientific PLC (AIM:NSCI) CEO Dr Ilian Iliev takes Proactive's Stephen Gunnion through a transaction that will see NetScientific company EMV Capital become the investment advisor to Martlet Capital's portfolio of 53 investments while acquiring its operational venture capital business. Iliev said the transaction is part of NetScientific's strategic goal to become a leading deep tech and life sciences venture capital investor in the UK and Europe, employing a differentiated investment strategy characterised by proactive value creation and capital-light approaches. The deal notably expands NetScientific's assets under management by nearly doubling them with the addition of a £23 million portfolio from Marlet Capital and includes the acquisition of Martlet Capital's operational team, forming a new entity under NetScientific. Iliev emphasised the alignment in ethos between NetScientific and Martlet Capital, rooted in long-term relationships and mutual commitment to the sectors. He also highlighted upcoming initiatives, including the launch of new funds aimed at investing in early-stage companies and growth opportunities within the UK, specifically in the Cambridge cluster. #NetScientificPLC, #DrIlianIliev, #VentureCapital, #LifeSciences, #DeepTech, #UKInvestment, #EuropeInvestment, #MartletCapital, #InvestmentManagement, #CapitalGrowth, #TechInvestment, #Biotech, #Innovation, #StartupFunding, #InvestmentStrategy, #AssetManagement, #UKTech, #CambridgeCluster, #GrowthFunding, #StrategicInvestment #ProactiveInvestors ##invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Jane Buchan is CEO of Martlet Asset Management, based in Newport Beach CA. She was one of the co-founders of Pacific Alternative Asset Management in 2000, which grew to $32 bn n AUM under her leadership. She was been a chair of the Board of CAIA as well as an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and has a number of Board roles. Jane's career straddles academic life and an entrepreneurial and business one, and she describes how her time as a professor taught her to be comfortable being an outsider, and confident in challenging the status quo. We follow her into consulting and then into striking out boldly to service a select group of large institutions - the genesis of what became PAAMCO. The unique structure and approach taken by PAAMCO led it to stand apart from peers, and we discuss some birthing pains that launching a new approach entailed. Moving to her current portfolio of roles, we examine the growth of group think in governance structures, and how developing a voice should be approached. We move then to topics of leadership, decision making and mentorship. Overall this is a richly layered conversation from one of the founders of the approach to hedge funds as we know it among institutions today. This bonus series is kindly supported by Sound Mark Partners. Sound Mark Partners LLC is a women-owned and led private credit firm focused on commercial real estate.

Nion McEvoy Jr (he/they) - 2021 Berlin A couple years have gone by since we last shared space together. It is really nice to have Nion visiting UNIV ERSE Studio again. Go check out the works here @nion_ and get tattooed while still in Berlin. Some of my dearest friendships make contact via others when I am able to be in the moment (during the years spent on tour this was a regular experience, through necessity). I was still overworking in all the ways possible, living in all of the dysfunctions, and starting to need to come through them (bottoming out lead me to committing to new recoveries, slow and steady). By chance, we were both in Los Angeles without enough time to do a tattoo (but Bryce said that Nion was sober and we could probably go catch a meeting together). Nion either picked me up or I skated down, most likely running late back then (it was supposed to be held on Melrose Ave and the Martlet was close by on Hollywood Blvd). The meeting was not happening, so we went for a diner hangout on Vermont that we both knew (I used to live around the corner year previous and years later Nion lived around close by). Small world. Since then we have pretty much spoken several times a week creating a connection that is near and dear to my heart. Our shared zest for tattooing (of which we've been doing a long distance mentorship), recoveries, spiritual wellness, and queerness have been hugely important for me. Super grateful, enjoy this deep dive into it.

In part two we continue William Tunstall-Pedoe's journey. William discusses his exit from Amazon, his involvement with Toronto based incubator, Creative Destructive Lab and what drove him to be a successful invested investor with over 50 investments with Cambridge Angels and Octopus Investments. He offers us an insight into his passion for big impact, deep tech, in particular, an AI physician app, where he acts as an invested investor and adviser. In this episode we also bring you an Amazon Alexa demonstration carried out by William, we hope you find it as highly entertaining as we do. You can hear more by listening to his podcast. About William Tunstall-Pedoe William Tunstall-Pedoe is a British entrepreneur focused on Artificial Intelligence and other deep technology. He is based in Cambridge, UK and London but also frequently in Toronto and both coasts of the US. (LinkedIn) His biggest recent achievement was founding the British company Evi (formerly True Knowledge) in 2005. After seven years running the business as a venture capital backed start-up, Amazon acquired it in 2012 and its AI technology, platform and team were used to create Alexa. For more than three years he had a senior role in the team that defined, built and launched Amazon Alexa and the Amazon Echo product (the initial Alexa device). Evi is now a subsidiary of Amazon and a large development centre employing many hundreds of scientists and engineers. After a decade since founding the company and with everything he hoped to achieve delivered successfully, he made the difficult decision to leave Amazon in February 2016. William now spends much of his time helping and investing in other AI startups. He has personally invested in more than 60 such businesses (see his angellistprofile.) . He is a full member of Cambridge Angels and a fellow of the Creative Destruction Lab in Toronto. He is also thinking gently about what to do next – which will likely be founding another AI-based startup. Produced by Mark Cotton, Twitter. The NBN Entrepreneurship and Leadership podcast aims to educate and entertain, sharing insights based on the stories of carefully selected guests - entrepreneurs and leaders - in the atmosphere of an informal conversation. About Peter Cowley Peter Cowley, a Cambridge university technology graduate, founded and ran over a dozen businesses in technology and property over the last 40 years. He is a board member of the Global Business Angel Network (GBAN), President Emeritus of the European Business Angel Network (EBAN), former chair of the Cambridge Business Angels and was UK Angel of the Year 2014. In part one we are fascinated to learn how the hugely successful, artificial intelligence entrepreneur, William Tunstall-Pedoe developed anagram-generating AI to solve cryptic crosswords and how he was inspired to become the sole founder of the Cambridge based start-up Evi in 2005. As the architect, William tells us how he steered a course from family investment through multiple venture capital rounds to the final pivot and the origins of an own brand, consumer product with Alexa and Echo. Acquired in 2012 by the multinational, technology giant Amazon as a major competitor for Apple's Siri, William explains how the move from independent to Amazon executive fitted him and the product well. This entertaining lecture on the enterprising Miles Aircraft company takes the listener on Miles’ journey from giving flying lessons on an Avro 504k during the 1920s to developing the M.52, the cancelled research aircraft that could have made Britain the first country to fly at supersonic speeds. The majority of Battle of Britain pilots trained on Miles' advanced trainer aircraft, the Master. The company also proposed a remotely piloted aircraft that would have carried a 1,000 lb bomb, though this was never put into production. Long-standing Miles employee D. L. Brown's talk features such famous Miles’ civilian and military aircraft as the Martlet, Magister, Messenger and Marathon. This latter aircraft was the company's response to the Brabazon Committee. Brown also discusses the relationship with the Royal Aircraft Establishment, which helped sponsor the company's research work and financed some of its aircraft. D. L. Brown FRAeS addressed a meeting organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Historical Group on 22 November 1965. The lecture is introduced by J. L. Nayler FRAeS FAIAA, the recording was digitised thanks to a grant from the RAeS Foundation and the podcast was edited by Mike Stanberry FRAeS.

She led a team of student-journalists that won two national journalism awards last year, and oversaw the editorial production of the bi-weekly newspaper that reported on news on campus and the surrounding Victoria area. Currently, she’s a freelance reporter based in Victoria, and has written various articles for large publications such as VICE, the CBC, and The Tyee.In this episode, we talk about Emily's recent freelancing, and specifically a story she wrote for The Tyee about a community group building showers for the unhoused in Victoria. Emily discusses how that story came to be, what it was like taking her own pictures for it, why she decided to pitch it to The Tyee, along with her passion to write about social issues. We also dive into Emily's work at The Martlet, a place where she and I started writing together at in 2016, and reminisce about stories when we started there, the challenges and lessons learned of being the Editor-in-Chief, and winning two national student journalism awards last year. The BC Election is almost upon us, and so we here at the Martlet podcast endeavoured to talk to three students about the party they are volunteering for this election. We spoke to Tessa Devakos (BC NDP), Tyler Faminow (BC Liberals), and Nick Noble (BC Greens), discovering why they identify with their party's platform and why they hope others do too. It's probably worth mentioning that the guests on this week's podcast do not represent the views of The Martlet or CFUV. The guests are volunteers, too, so their views may not represent that of their parties — however they are volunteering with that party for a reason, and we hope those reasons are clear enough. It's that time of year for student politics at UVic, which, for most students, means it's the time of year that a few posters go up ... and that's about it. In order to understand and perhaps find a solution for the apparent apathy when it comes to student politics, we sat down with Emma Kinakin, the UVSS' current director of student affairs, and Myles Sauer, the editor-in-chief at the Martlet and reluctant student politic reporter. We also went out and around campus to talk to you, the students, to see what you had to say about it all. Thanks to all who were interviewed and, of course, thanks to the Martlet and CFUV for their help in producing this week's podcast.
