In this special bonus segment, I'm thrilled to be joined by two incredible actors, ladies, and stars of The West Wing, Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack. As a HUGE fan of The West Wing, we affectionately referred to as Wingnuts, I'm excited to take the show off the course with these wonderful ladies. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of hosting Melissa Fitzgerald, who portrayed Carole Fitzpatrick. During that episode, she gave us a teaser about a behind-the-scenes book she was co-writing with fellow cast member Mary McCormack, who played Deputy National Security Advisor Kate Harper. That book, titled What's Next: A Backstage Pass to The West Wing, has since been released and has become a New York Times Bestseller. In our conversation, you'll hear the fascinating story of how the book was conceived over cake and drinks at Alison Janney's house. We also discuss the show's enduring legacy 25 years later, its call to service, the powerful impact of the “In Excelsis Deo” episode, and the key episodes they chose to highlight. Melissa and Mary also share what it was like to work with Aaron Sorkin, the culture Martin Sheen established from day one, the loss of John Spencer, and the epic prank wars between Bradley Whitford and Josh Malina. Bradley even reflects on how, no matter what else they achieve in their careers, The West Wing will always be the first line in their obituaries. I highly recommend picking up this beautifully written book—it's a fantastic read and is available wherever books are sold.

Twenty-five years ago, on September 22, 1999, one of the most beloved television shows of all time premiered on NBC: The West Wing, starring Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, John Spencer, and a whole host of other talented actors, including our two guests today—but more on them in a moment. The political drama was created and largely written by Aaron Sorkin, one of my personal favorite writers, and aired from that day in 1999 until May 14, 2006, totaling seven seasons. Across its 154 episodes, we become immersed, as the title suggests, in the West Wing of the White House, where the Oval Office and the offices of those that work closely with the president are located, during the fictional Democratic administration of President Josiah Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen. The West Wing is regularly and often ranked among the best television shows of all time, and during its run won three Golden Globe Awards and a whopping 26 Primetime Emmy Awards, including the award for Outstanding Drama Series, which it won four consecutive times from 2000 to 2003. Beloved cast member John Spencer, who played chief of staff Leo McGarry, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on December 16, 2005, about a year after his character experienced a nearly fatal heart attack on the show. This, naturally, rocked the cast, and the show ended five months after his death. Today on the show we have two cast members, Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack, here to discuss their new book What's Next?: A Backstage Pass to the West Wing, Its Cast and Crew, and Its Enduring Legacy of Service, which is out August 13. This book is so great, and it's long—825 pages' worth of interviews and oral history about a show that changed culture. Today, Melissa, Mary, and I talk about what made The West Wing such a cultural touchstone, the show's enduring commitment to public service, the group chat that continues still today, what the book's title means, the show's legacy, and so much more. Melissa played Carol Fitzpatrick on the show, an assistant to press secretary C.J. Cregg (played by Allison Janney). In addition to her career as an actress—she has also appeared on Grey's Anatomy and in The Truman Show—she is also the founder of Voices in Harmony, a nonprofit community theater in L.A., and back in November 2013 joined Justice for Vets as its Senior Director. Mary played Deputy National Security Adviser Kate Harper on The West Wing and has appeared in films like Private Parts, Deep Impact, True Crime, and Mystery, Alaska, and on shows like Murder One, ER, In Plain Sight, Scandal, The Newsroom, Will & Grace, and The Kids Are Alright. I can't wait for you to hear this conversation!   What's Next?: A Backstage Pass to the West Wing, Its Cast and Crew, and Its Enduring Legacy of Service by Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack

On our latest weekly roundup, it's the conclusion (we hope!) of the renovations and room-switcherooing at Terri's house. What we're watching: We continued with season 1 of Reservation Dogs with episodes 5 and 6: "Come and Get Your Love," which focused on Cheese and Big and introduced the Deer Lady; and "Hunting," a moving portrait of Willie Jack's relationship with her dad. While we missed Bear and Elora, we liked the deeper dive into these other characters, and know that we'll see the others again soon. Mentioned: Vulture recaps of episode 5 and episode 6.Catherine's library find this week is a fractured fairy tale called Snow White and the 77 Dwarfs by Davide Cali. Let's just say parents will relate to the decision Snow White ultimately makes (and the illustrations, by Raphaelle Barbanegre, are amazing). In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed what our kids are watching on TV (February 8, 2023); how kids change their parents (February 2, 2022); and parenting-related reality TV challenges (February 6, 2020). Mentioned: The West Wing Weekly podcast and What's Next: A Backstage Pass to the West Wing, Its Cast and Crew, and Its Enduring Legacy of Service, a forthcoming book by Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack.Next week, we'll watch the final two episodes of Reservation Dogs, season 1: "California Dreamin'" and "Satvrday." Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

What a privilege to get to spend some time with one of the great people you get to meet in this life, Melissa Fitzgerald. Melissa played Carol Fitzpatrick, CJ's assistant, on The West Wing. You've also probably seen her movies like The Truman Show and Monument Avenue or on other TV shows like Gray's Anatomy and Chasing The Hill. Melissa and I start out talking about growing up in Philadelphia. She is the daughter of a father who was a Pennsylvania Supreme Court Judge and her mother was also politically active and volunteered in the community. They are graduates of the University of Pennsylvania. I asked Melissa what it was like for her to give the commencement speech at Chestnut Hill College. We then delved into how loyal West Wing fans are to the cast and show. She talks about the support she's gotten over the years from her West Wing cast members, and the new book that she and Mary McCormack have written about their West Wing experience called, What's Next, due out later this summer. We then transition into the incredible work she's done following the show. We hear about how the In Excelsis Deo episode became a reality for her when she was hired as the Director of Justice for Vets, a non-profit organization focused on veterans' treatment courts. It has recently gone through a rebranding to All Rise. Her cast mates have rallied around her in her new role to help raise money and awareness for the great things this court system is doing to help our Veterans, who are dealing with substance abuse or mental health issues, get their lives back on track. Be sure to check out the great things Melissa and All Rise are doing online at www.allrise.org plus give her a follow on Instagram or X @maffyfitz. The book will be available later his summer in August. You can pre-order on Amazon. I will try to get both Melissa and Mary McCormack to join me when the release date gets closer.

The BBC has had a powerful influence on our musical taste, and in this BBC centenary year, Nicholas Kenyon, a former controller of Radio 3 and director of the Proms, delves into the archives to explore the BBC's role in reviving the centuries of early music from before the 18th century. In his final essay, Kenyon looks at how in the early 1970s, the popularity of medieval and renaissance music increased hugely with the success of the Early Music Consort led by the dynamic David Munrow. He became a key figure in the BBC's broadcasting on Radio 3 with his eclectic series of short programmes called Pied Piper, and his colleague Christopher Hogwood presented The Young Idea, similarly mixing new and old. Then the emphasis in the revival of early music shifted from simply rediscovering the music of the past and playing it on modern instruments, to reinventing the ways of playing that music in line with historical evidence. Hogwood's Academy of Ancient Music led the way with many broadcasts, and recordings in period style were soon high in the charts with Pavarotti. Early music had entered the mainstream of our musical life. Presented by Nicholas Kenyon Produced by Melissa FitzGerald

Today Kenyon explores how in the creative years of the 1950s and 1960s, the revival of early music had a sense of adventure; new orchestras were established like the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields which explored the repertory in broadcasts and recordings. He highlights the work of three contrasted pioneers: Imogen Holst, who programmed concerts of medieval music at Aldeburgh, promoted by the BBC Transcription Service; Denis Stevens, the musicologist and conductor who broadcast and worked for the BBC Third Programme but became a hugely controversial figure because of his argumentative nature; and William Glock, who became the BBC's Controller of Music in 1959 and transformed the repertory of the Proms, welcoming in a whole range of earlier music that had never been heard before at the Proms. In his third essay, Kenyon explores how the launch of the BBC's cultural Third Programme in 1946 rapidly advanced the revival of early music on the BBC. From Alfred Deller singing Purcell in the opening concert of the network, to huge and difficult undertakings like the History in Sound of European Music, the Third supported the scholarly exploration of earlier repertories. Leading figures on the staff were experts in early music, and worked with a new generation of emerging performers who were interested in performing the music of the past: Julian Bream on the lute and George Malcolm on harpsichord, Neville Marriner on the violin, and Arnold Goldsborough conducting chamber orchestras. In the title of one 1948 series featuring the violinist Norbert Brainin, leader of the Amadeus Quartet, they were creating ‘new life for old music'. The BBC has had a powerful influence on our musical taste, and in this BBC centenary year, Nicholas Kenyon, a former controller of Radio 3 and director of the Proms, delves into the archives to explore the BBC's role in reviving the centuries of early music from before the 18th century. In five programmes he looks at the rare repertory which the BBC broadcast, from its small beginnings in the 1920s to its acceptance in the mainstream during the 1970s. Drawing on entertaining and illuminating extracts from the BBC archives, with original music recordings, Kenyon shows the way in which early music and period-style performance gradually became part of our musical consciousness and an essential part of our listening. In his second essay, Kenyon explores how by the 1930s the BBC had become a powerful influence on national taste and there were strong voices urging it to do more for British music. In 1934 it broadcast a 13-week series of English music ‘From plainsong to Purcell' curated by the scholar, conductor and editor Sir Richard Terry. He argued for ancient music on the grounds that ‘our forefathers were human beings like ourselves. Music which held human appeal for them cannot be devoid of interest for us.' Terry edited music for broadcast which had never been broadcast before, and some of which, like the sixty secular madrigals of Peter Philips, had never been heard in modern times. Early music came to form a part of national ceremonial like the Coronation of George VI in 1937, with the BBC leading the way in its celebratory concerts. In his first essay, Kenyon explores how in the 1920s there was a new approach to performing the music of past, which tried to recreate the scale and sound of the music when it was written. Pioneers on the radio included Percy Warlock (pen-name of the composer Philip Heseltine) who broadcast ‘Old Ayres and Keyboard Music', and claimed that ‘there is no such thing as progress in music. A good work of 300 years ago is just as perfect now as it was on the day it was written'. The quirky Violet Gordon Woodhouse, who famously lived with four men, was the first to record and broadcast on the harpsichord. The violinist André Mangeot, who was fictionalised in a book by Christopher Isherwood, worked with Warlock to revive viol music of Henry Purcell from 1680. But there were internal BBC controversies as to whether this early music was of real interest to listeners. Presented by Nicholas Kenyon Produced by Melissa FitzGerald

It is free, or you can see and read the interactive copy on the website as well, with more to the story: more text, more pics, stories that didn’t make the print edition and LARGER Print. May was a fun issue to compile and read. Our cover features the work of Cartoon Saloon, the multi-Academy, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated Kilkenny based genius’, the Inner View is within. We have Part II of the former West Wing actor Melissa Fitzgerald’s Inner View story; Did you know that potato a day keeps the doctor away? Dr Peters gives us the (Kerry) gold. Toledo Irish meet & greet with Men from the Bog; so many May memorials, especially the anniversaries of the Easter Rising Firing Squads administered to most of its leaders, and the ten Hunger Striker’s deaths is not least among them. Former Celtic Women star Eabhan Mc Mahon’s first solo CD, Wildflower, is reviewed (Hint: it’s really good!), as well as Black 47 Founder and voice, Larry Kirwan’s new Book, Rockaway Blue which is also very good. Ever have an Irish Mexican Fusion? Well, the recipe is inside, and Dan Coughlin writes a very funny Home Sweet Home, and the stories discovered in the line at a wake, while waiting to pay respects. Can they Ban the Irish Language? Thin Lizzy makes an appearance in Ireland, and so does the electric car; and now, more than ever, it is time for an Irish Unity Referendum. Of course, we have the Kid’s Craic and Colour of Ireland Kid’s Contest pages, and the Irish Crossword on Patriots of Ireland, inside too. So very sad to see that Fitzerald’s Bed & Breakfast is up for sale. Certainly, COVID lingers. So, what happened on this day in Irish history? 8 May 1567 - Shane O’Neill of Tyrone was defeated by Hugh O’Donnell at the Battle of Faretsmore, Co. Donegal. 8 May 2007 - ‘Devolution Day’ in Northern Ireland: DUP Leader Ian Paisley and Sinn Fein Leader Martin McGuiness took office in a restored Northern Ireland Assembly. 14 May 1893 - George “McIrish” McElroy was born in Donnybrook, County Dublin. He became Ireland’s greatest WWI ace, with forty-seven victories. 15 May 2007- Bertie Ahern became the first Taoiseach to address the Westminster parliament. *** So, let’s get to the good stuff! Tomorrow is the opening of the U.S. Gaelic Athletic Association 2021 year.  In Cleveland, it kicks off with a Midwest tournament. But I’d rather hear the gospel from the priest, so please welcome Cleveland St. Patrick’s Gaelic Football Club president, Vincent Beach. Hello Vince! Welcome to the iIrish Songs, Stories & Shenanigans podcast. It is good to see you again, even if it is via Zoom, as we make the best of things. Tell me about Gaelic Football in Ireland, America, Cleveland - Origins, mission, goals and benefits. How has it gone, esp during COVID? Is Cleveland’s the typical Irish immigrant sports story? Differences? What do you dream about when you wake up for the team? Your work with the GAA, to me, is about a bit of a dream - but perhaps unity and hope, today and for the future – tell me about the kids program too - hat are you were aiming for with your work? If we were having this conversation three years from today, what would have to happen for you to feel happy with your progress? We always ask, any stories from the road, but the road now is a distant memory – still, any stories? What do you do besides lead the GAA in Cleveland and the Midwest? Woodie Guthrie said, ‘You write what you see’. Has that held true for you as a leader? What did you see in the GAA that made you choose to take on the leadership of the GAA? After some deep reflection and with a renewed devotion to serve her country, Samantha decides to run for the highest office in the Land, not unlike one-term congressman Abraham Lincoln. Sam hires a young and equally politically passionate Des Moines local, "Kelli Brown," to run her Iowa campaign, and together the two women run as the dark horses in a highly competitive and challenging race. Going Viral brings you a special episode about the role of the media in the growth of vaccine hesitancy, recorded live at City University of London on 26th June 2019. @CityUniLondon. In the last 18 months, Europe and the US have seen an upsurge in measles cases seemingly fuelled by growing distrust of the Measles Mumps and Rubella vaccine. Many media commentators blame the measles outbreaks on the activities of anti-vaxxers – in particular, misleading information about MMR and other vaccines that circulate on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.  But are anti-vaxxers really to blame for the upsurge in measles cases? Or is it all a bit of a moral panic manufactured by the press? And what about the rare cases where a vaccine is associated with an adverse event?  How should journalists report genuine concerns about the safety and efficacy of vaccines without giving a platform to anti-vaxxers? Presented by Mark Honigsbaum, @honigsbaum Guest speakers: Fiona Fox, the Chief Executive of the Science Media Centre in London, @SMC_London.  Dr. David Robert Grimes, Trinity College, Dublin, @drg1985. Jo Yarwood, Immunisation Manager at Public Health England, @PHE_uk. Emilie Karafillakis, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine’s Vaccine Confidence Project, @EKarafillakis.  Produced by Melissa FitzGerald, @Melissafitzg Follow us on Twitter: @GoingViral_pod

Despite being one of the smallest producers of rice, Australia is one of the largest rice traders in the world. And it is questions of the quality of rice, both within Australia and internationally, that informs food scientist Professor Melissa Fitzgerald’s research. Driven to conduct applied research that can positively impact people’s lives and be meaningful for industry, Melissa has held a variety of academic and industry roles, including Head of Rice Quality and Evaluating at the International Rice Research Institute, Director of the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre on Transforming the Food Industry for Australia, Asia and beyond, and holding the Australian Food and Grocery Council Chair in Food Science and Technology in the University of Queensland’s School of Agriculture and Food Sciences. In order to succeed in these diverse roles, Melissa has had to develop effective leadership strategies, and she reflects on her experiences as a leader in the podcast. Melissa’s interest in industry and undertaking research that matters has also impacted her approach to equipping her students with the necessary skills to enter industry work-ready, and Melissa explains how she supports such learning within the podcast. The podcast and video both see Melissa engage thoughtfully with questions of gender in the sciences and academia more broadly, particularly in terms of what women need in order to succeed. Linked to this analysis, in the podcast Melissa offers an insightful explanation of unconscious bias, and how we can conceptualise its impact within the individual.

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance's podcast

Episode 2 of Surface Tension turns the spotlight on Faultline from 2007. Presenter Sanjoy Roy recollects his memories of the piece, the style, aesthetic and evocative atmosphere. The anxiety, the coolness and the swagger of what it meant to be young, British and Asian at that time. A shift in cultural climate after the 2005 bombings - when young Asian men became suspicious in society. He speaks to Shobana Jeyasingh about the triggers that shaped the piece; the 2005 London bombings, subsequent raids and the hysterical unease that was pervasive in every day life. All of which contributed to the look and feel of Faultline. Shobana talks about the various creative collaborations that all knitted together in the final piece; the film which acted as the prologue, the initial introduction of the dancers, characters and music - in particular the voice of Patricia Rozario. Plus the direct influence of Gautam Malkani’s book Londonstani, published in 2006, which had a profound effect on the movement generation phase of Faultline. We talk to author Gautam Malkani about his own experience of growing up in London, the culture adopted by Asian rude-boy gangs. He talks about the hyper masculinity, language, posing and posturing that characterised his book and reads some excerpts. We hear Gautam’s reaction on hearing that his book had inspired a dance piece and how Shobana was able to encapsulate the essence and themes in a very direct choreography of raw aggression. We speak to Robin Rimbaud (Scanner) who composed the score for Faultline. Shobana wanted him to create a soundscape that produced a dark, charged and intense atmosphere; a sonic picture of London in 2007 using electronic music. Composer Errollyn Wallen joins the conversation to talk about how she collaborated and shaped the music to compliment Robin’s soundscape. In the final section we interview artist and filmmaker Pete Gomes who produced the visuals and the approach he agreed on with Shobana. Series Producer, Melissa FitzGerald @Melissafitzg   Shobana Jeyasingh @SJeyasinghDance Born in Chennai, India, she currently lives and works in London. Her acclaimed, highly individual work has been seen in all kinds of venues, including theatres, outdoor and indoor sites and on film. Shobana’s work is often enriched by specially commissioned music composed by an array of contemporary composers — from Michael Nyman to beat-boxer Shlomo. Her eclectic band of creative collaborators have included filmmakers, mathematicians, digital designers, writers, animators, as well as lighting and set designers. On the night the Grenfell Tower fire began on 14 June 2017, the mosques and churches which encircle the tower block in Kensington, West London, provided bases for vital relief work. It was Ramadan so many Muslim faithful were returning from prayers when the fire started, and they were able to alert residents and help people get out of the burning building. In the hours and days that followed, in one of the richest areas of one of the wealthiest cities in the world, people of all religions were mobilised in the crisis and came together to offer crucial pastoral support and practical help, while the authorities were accused of being slow to respond. Presenter Zubeida Malik meets the residents and religious leaders to find out what happened that night and how they continue to administer emotional support and funeral prayers in the aftermath of the tragedy. And she asks them what kind of answers faith can provide in such a crisis. Produced by Melissa FitzGerald.
