What if the history of Black women's fitness could be a lens through which we understand broader societal dynamics? On this special episode of the African Americans in Sport podcast, we have the privilege of hosting Dr. Ava Purkiss, associate professor of history and author of "Fit Citizens: A History of Black Women's Exercise." Dr. Purkiss shares her personal journey, driven by the early loss of her mother, which led her into researching the critical intersections of race, health, and fitness. Together, we explore how race, gender, and class have shaped the landscape for Black women in sports and fitness, and how these elements have been key to community health and empowerment over the years. Our conversation takes a thought-provoking turn as we unravel the complexities surrounding body image and the weight loss industry, particularly from the unique vantage point of South Florida's vibrant culture. With insights from Dr. Purkiss's experiences at Curves gym and a diet clinic, we examine the societal pressures and cultural influences that frame perceptions of body image, especially within communities of color. The narrative weaves through personal and geographical influences, highlighting how these pressures manifest in places like Miami's beach-centric environment, and how they impact individuals on a personal level.Lastly, our discussion delves into the evolution of fitness narratives and the powerful roles historical figures have played in redefining the health standards for Black communities. We shine a light on the contributions of icons like Mary Rose Reeves Allen and E.B. Henderson, while also critiquing contemporary health metrics such as BMI. The episode closes with an exploration of the layered identities of Black historical figures and their ongoing influence on today's health discourse, leaving our listeners with a richer understanding of how fitness and cultural standards continue to intersect and evolve.Support the showhttps://www.patreon.com/c/EA_BookClub

Episode Description: In this inspiring episode of Black Is America, host Dominic Lawson takes us on a cinematic, time-traveling journey through the lives of three iconic Black women whose speed transcended the track: Wilma Rudolph, Florence Griffith Joyner (Flo Jo), and Sha'Carri Richardson. Joined by Olympic gold medalist Moushaumi Robinson, Dominic explores how each of these women didn't just run — they defied societal expectations, symbolizing freedom, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of Black womanhood. From Wilma's battle with polio to Flo Jo's fashion-forward domination, and Sha'Carri's public redemption arc, this episode is a masterclass in perseverance and Black excellence. Tune in to uncover why for Black women, speed isn't just about winning — it's about being seen, celebrated, and rewriting history. Episode Highlights & Key Takeaways: Wilma Rudolph's journey: From polio-stricken childhood to becoming the fastest woman in the world at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Florence Griffith Joyner's style and speed: How Flo Jo combined athletic dominance with unapologetic beauty and cultural impact, redefining what a champion could look like. Sha'Carri Richardson's redemption story: How the sprinter's suspension became a national conversation on grace, resilience, and how Black women are held to impossible standards — and how she roared back stronger. The power of representation and freedom: Olympic gold medalist Moushaumi Robinson reflects on seeing Flo Jo as a child and how that vision of beauty and freedom inspired generations. Black women in business and politics: How Black women continue to break records not just on the track, but as entrepreneurs, educators, and changemakers. Historical context and cinematic storytelling: A non-linear journey through the stories of these women, enriched with sound design, Olympic archives, and historical parallels. The ongoing conversation around protecting and celebrating Black women: From Sandra Bland to Breonna Taylor, the episode challenges listeners to see victories without footnotes and to honor Black women's humanity and excellence fully. Notable Soundbites & Quotes from the Episode: "Speed is not just about moving fast — it's freedom." — Moushaumi Robinson "Black women don't just show up. They show out." — Dominic Lawson "It's always the first, but rarely the celebration." — Moushaumi Robinson "Sha'Carri's suspension wasn't just about track; it was about who gets grace and who doesn't." — Dominic Lawson "Black women mold adversity into strength — on the track, in boardrooms, and in Congress." — Dominic Lawson Final Thoughts This episode is a moving tribute to the legacy of Black women who run not just to win, but to inspire, break barriers, and push the world forward. Through Wilma, Flo Jo, and Sha'Carri, we're reminded that speed is more than physical — it's a spiritual declaration of freedom and resilience. Athletes like Angel Reese & Sha'Carri Richardson have so brilliantly led women's sports into the national spotlight, but with this has come lots of negative attention and straight-up negligent media coverage of these athletes and their sports. I wanted to hear from Black Women Sports journalists both in front of and behind the camera to explore what's needed to correct some of these biased narratives. Joining me for this Black women in sports media roundtable are supervising producer Jasmine Ellis, and Emmy-award winning journalist Jemele Hill. Jasmine has worked on shows such as Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe's "A Touch More,” Speak.Easy for CNN+, and ESPNS's SC6. During our conversation, we discussed the barriers that exist for Black women to enter the sports media space, the importance of cultural competency when covering women's sports, and why we can't just “stick to sports” when talking about female athletes. Joining us on the show today is Dr. Greg Potter, a doctor who focuses on chronobiology, here with us to discuss how when we eat may be just as important as what you eat.   Officer Clemons (0:19:33) Won'tyou be my neighbor? For many of us, those words bring to mind the image of Fred Rogers in a sweater and sneakers broadcasting messages of kindness, acceptance, and empathy as part of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. And those messages are just as important today. But Mister Rogers' was also involved in a larger conversation about race. He challenged ideas of segregation, injustice, and inequality like, for example, in the famous pool scene where he washed his feet with Officer Clemmons, played by Francois Clemmons... the first African American actor to have a recurring role on a children's television program. Francois' book “Officer Clemmons: A Memoir” was recently released, and he joins us today to discuss his book, Mister Rogers, and his role as Officer Clemmons.   Science Fiction: Dream or Prophecy (0:38:00) Science fiction books and movies are some of the most popular pieces of entertainment out there: consider Star Wars, Star Trek, and the Avengers just to name a few. They inspire us to dream about what our futuristic world might look like. Could we one day fly around the universe as part of our daily commute or use light sabers to fight off bad guys? Thinking about the technology that might someday exist is exciting! But even more exciting is seeing those gadgets from science fiction become reality like bionic hands for amputees or electric cars. But who is inspiring who? Do science fiction writers shape the future of technological advancement, or are they just good at predicting the future? To help us discuss this we've invited Charlie Jane Anders onto the show, a science fiction author, speaker, and journalist.   The Power of Music (0:52:47) We all have our favorite comfort songs, songs that we like to listen to when we're down. Maybe you like to listen to sad music so you feel validated in your feelings. Maybe you need an angry, heavy metal song you can scream along to. Or maybe you enjoy happy songs that pull you out of the gutter.  Whatever you choose to listen to for comfort—you can't deny that music seems to have almost a magic power to help us feel better. Why is that? Here to talk with us all about how music can heal us and improve our mood is music therapist Brian Jantz.   Onyx: Celebrating Black Women in Sports (1:15:51) The amazing black female athletes among us aren't celebrated as often as they should be. These inspiring women tend to be overlooked. We've heard of Venus and Serena Williams as well as Simone Biles, but what about the many other women of color breaking records and doing great things on the court, the beam, or the field? One media company called GoodSport is working to change that. They're highlighting the stories of black athletes on their latest program that comes out mid-July called Onyx: Celebrating Black Women in Sports. The host of the show, Monica McNutt, joins us today to discuss its mission and some of the stories. She's the former captain of Georgetown University's basketball team and a sports reporter.   How Dark Times can Spark New Beginnings (1:28:16) We all face moments in our lives when we have to decide how we're going to let a situation mold us. Will we let our trial by fire moments make us stronger and more refined or will we allow them to make us bitter and hopeless? Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Likewise, I think nothing and no one in this life can make us give up or feel hopeless without our permission. So how do we push through dark times or even tragedies? Today, we're speaking with author Brian P. Walsh about his experience as a young firefighter who experienced extreme trauma after getting caught in a burning building. He joins us to discuss how adversity can spark new beginnings.
