Episode 286 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, features two great PWHL interviews: Carly Jackson of the Toronto Sceptres and Sandra Abstreiter of the Montreal Victoire. In the feature interview presented by NHL Sense Arena, we get two different perspectives on -- and paths to -- playing in the PWHL from Abstreiter, who is from Germany and did not start playing goal until she was 15 years old (!!!), and Jackson, who last appeared on InGoal Radio after winning the final PHF championship with the Toronto Six. The interviews are loaded with great stories, anecdotes and advice from both goalies on everything from mindset to technique, including a great discussion with Jackson on how her game -- and in particular, her stance -- has evolved in a season and a half since that championship, and how those changes have been fuelled not only by new coaching voices but also the importance of learning from new playing partners. In our Parents Segment, presented by the Stop It Goaltending U app, we share the often overlooked reality of being traded -- and all that comes with it -- playing junior hockey. We also review this week's Pro Reads, which is presented by Vizual Edge, featuring Joey Daccord of the Seattle Kraken with some great advice on when to skate and when to slide on low-high plays. And in our weekly gear segment, we go to The Hockey Shop Source for Sports for a deep dive into the new Vaughn VX1 pads and gloves, which includes a pretty big departure for a Velocity pad.
On this episode, host Sarah Burke sits down with Saroya Tinker with a live audience at the Queen Street Knix Store in Toronto, in partnership with Monday Girl. Saroya Tinker is a former professional hockey player who recently transitioned to join the Professional Women's Hockey League's broadcasting team, both on panel and color commentary. She shares her personal journey of retiring from playing to focus on her role as a PWHL broadcaster and the league's advocacy work. Saroya opens up about the challenges she faced as a Black woman in hockey and the importance of representation, leading her to her work with Black Girl Hockey Club and mentoring the next generation. The conversation also touches on Saroy's self-care practices, her interests outside of hockey, and her vision for the future of women's sports, highlighting the need for continued collaboration and progress. More about Saroya Tinker: Tinker was a Yale University Women's Hockey Team member before graduating with a degree in History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health. Saroya Tinker is a defender for the Toronto Six of the Premier Hockey Federation, but her journey to becoming one of the few black players in professional hockey is one of perseverance, determination, and mental toughness. We sat down with Saroya to discuss her introduction to the game of hockey from a child growing up in Canada, getting called the N word by a teammate at the age of 12, and becoming the first black player ever in the history of the Yale Men's or Women's Ice Hockey program. We discuss her journey dealing with an eating disorder that caused her to struggle with being body positive, and how that led her to painting as a healthy outlet to express her feelings on a canvas. Her perspective on mental health in this conversation was truly inspiring, and would be a lift to anyone struggling with body positivity, anxiety, or any other form of mental struggles that can arise throughout life. We also touch on her role in the film Black Ice, working alongside Nike and Uninterrupted on a plethora of projects, and how she's been able to brand herself off the ice as an athlete! All in all, this was a conversation with a true pioneer for black women in hockey, and someone who all of us can learn from, no matter what walk of life you're in, on how to uplift the next generation, while also loving yourself, no matter what society might throw at you along the way! Make sure you subscribe, and give us a like if you enjoy this conversation!

With the standings still up in the air, we don't have a clear picture of who is top of the league. Right now Boston and Vegas are up there. This week we touch on a couple Boston Bruins stories featuring Connor Clifton and Jim Montgomery. We start with an Evander Kane update and we break down the St. Louis Blues. Dominic Tiano (@DominicTiano) tweeted about trading Derek Forbort...we discuss. We have a discourse regarding the best goalie in Boston, currently it would be Corrine Schroeder of the Pride. Thomas Freel wants other players to hate him, which reminds us of a couple other NHL players. Tkachuk suspended, along with the Toronto Six head coach. Finally, there is the Sled Hockey Classic happening November 17-20 in Anaheim, California. So much hockey related content so listen and tell us what you think. Enjoy the Show!

Episode 16 brings with it my conversation with Toronto Six forward Mikyla Grant-Mentis. Currently the reigning Newcomer of the Year and Most Valuable Player of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), Mikyla enjoyed a phenomenal season with the Toronto Six, leading the league in points while also becoming the most decorated player in a single NWHL season at just 22 years old. With the Toronto Six being the newest expansion franchise to join the league, they didn't even get the chance to play in front of their home fans in Canada during their inaugural season, as the NWHL established a bubble-like tournament in Lake Placid, New York. Regardless, after a successful, albeit shortened, campaign, Mikyla is back in Canada enjoying the offseason and joins the podcast to chat about the challenges her and her teammates faced while playing in Lake Placid, how her own mentality has evolved with the growth of women's hockey, and her hopes of the future as the league marches on towards sustainability. We are BACK with Part 5 of our NWHL Season Review - chatting about the Toronto Six! We are joined by rookie forward Sarah-Eve Coutu-Godbout, who is one of the MANY rookies on the Six; as it was their inaugural season in the league! What's it like to play on a team for their very first season? Sarah tells us all about the dynamics for the team being the first Canadian team in the NWHL, what its like to be able to set the culture and momentum for the franchise, and how it felt going through the playoffs as a completely new group getting to know one another. ON TOP OF ALL OF THAT ADVERSITY, the Six faced particularly difficulty with COVID-19. As the only Canadian team, they struggled to get their entire roster in one place to practice and train, they faced additional health and safety protocol requirements with Canada's legalities and border crossing, and more. Check out how the Six were able to train and mesh as a team through their Isobel Cup run through the pandemic in our discussion with Sarah! Interested?
