We are living through unprecedented times; as each of us continues processing the election, and moving through waves of grief, disappointment, overwhelm, etc., it is vital to remain rooted in God, and come into beloved community with one another. Mom and I share a few of our thoughts post-election (check out two recent Instagram posts, Jesus Is… and Reclaiming Christianity), drop into discussing what soul care is, why it matters, and share two soul care practices you can lean into for support - breath prayer and meditating on verses of scripture. Breath prayer helps us to focus on a short phrase (God, Give me strength to keep going…or uplift a verse of scripture). You say the first part of the prayer on your inhale, and the second part on your exhale. You repeat this over and over until you feel God's spirit. And Mom walked us through meditating on scripture which she breaks down into a 3 step process of which begins with prayer, and then we observe (write down what you think the verse is saying), interpret (go deeper here and ask >>> what does this verse mean?), and application (how does this verse apply to my life? How can I embody it within my everyday living?). This episode features three of our favorite people on the planet—Lisa's cohosts on The Four Podcast which cut a blaze of glory in 2022! The Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III is senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. He is a preacher, poet, activist, author and filmmaker with an eye toward justice and equality, as evidenced through the gospel of Jesus Christ. He founded The Unashamed Media Group. The Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis is the first African American and first woman to serve as the senior pastor of Middle Collegiate Church in New York City—the oldest continuous Protestant Church in the U.S. Founding Visionary Leader behind the Freedom Rising Conferences, Rev. Dr. Jacqui uses her gifts as an author, activist, preacher, and public theologian toward creating an antiracist, just, gun violence free, fully welcoming, gender affirming society in which everyone has enough. Rev. Michael-Ray Matthews is the principal of The Prophetic Foundry, LLC, a consultancy co-creating wisdom, resources, and futures at the nexus of spirituality, healing, and justice. Formerly the Deputy Director of Faith in Action, Michael-Ray also served as the seven-season host of the Prophetic Resistance Podcast. Together we were the four-host team of The Four Podcast which cut a blaze of glory across the pod-waves in 2022. Plus, we were all fortunate to experience a fabulous flash in the life of the historic Auburn Theological Seminary when we served together as Auburn Senior Fellows for nearly a decade. So, when the news dropped that Biden stepped back and Kamala surged forward, the people we wanted to hear from most were Lisa's Four Podcast buddies. So, that's what we're talking about today. We are talking Election 2024, Democracy, why it matters to our faith, why it has mattered to our lives, why it matters to our world (think Gaza, Sudan, Congo, etc), and finally, what's up with this Project 2025 thing? We'd love to hear your thoughts. Thread or Insta Lisa @lisasharper or to Freedom Road @freedomroad.us. We're also on Substack! So be sure to subscribe to freedomroad.substack.com. REWIND: In honor of Black history month, and this year's theme of resistance, we are revisiting past conversations with guests committed to the active and everyday work of resisting racism and the false ideology of white supremacy. We sat down with Rev. Dr. Jacqueline J. Lewis, Senior Minister at Middle Collegiate Church, a 1,300-member multi-ethnic, welcoming, and inclusive congregation in New York City (and full disclosure, my home church, loves!) for a conversation which delved into: - The need for each of us to make anti-racism a daily practice. - Rooting our minds and spirits in revolutionary love. - The challenging joy of leading a diverse church that is radically inclusive and leaves no one out regardless of race, sexuality / gender identity or ability. - Why one of the essential duties of church members is to push leaders towards anti-racist practices which go beyond the pews, and into our daily lives - the way we love, work, shop and come into community. Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis is a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, and earned her Ph.D. in Religion and Society/Psychology and Religion at Drew University. Ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Dr. Lewis hosted “Just Faith,” an on-demand television program on MSNBC.com and is a frequent media commentator. Her books include: Fierce Love, The Power of Stories: A Guide for Leaders in Multi-racial, Multi-cultural Congregations, Ten Strategies for Becoming a Multiracial Congregation, and the children's book, You Are So Wonderful! Hopefully this conversation with Reverend Dr. Jacqui Lewis will be as much of a gift to you as it was for me. We explored some deep questions like, What was the failure of the people of Israel around the time of Yeshua ben Yosef? Is our own generation also failing Jesus as Messiah? What does it mean to be a "drum major for peace"? What is the church's culpability in racism? What is ubiquitously God's call on our life - whether we're Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Bantu, Sikh, or any other faith? What does it mean to be a theologian in residence in one's own life? The REV. DR. When people try to block racial justice efforts, we tend to respond intellectually. We come up with arguments and rebuttals. But what's happening with racism is not just a battle against lies and misinformation, it is a spiritual struggle that requires a spiritual response. How should we think about and respond to the anti-CRT crusade through the lens of Scripture and the life of Jesus Christ? How do we relate to people who want to deny the truth of our racial history and get in the way of efforts at racial justice? What can we learn from the teachings of Christianity about resisting racism? Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, Senior Minister of the historic Middle Collegiate Church, offers us her wisdom. Katharine Hayhoe, climate scientist at Texas Tech University, chief scientist of The Nature Conservancy, lead author for the Second, Third, and Fourth US National Climate Assessment, host of the PBS digital series Global Weirding and the author of Saving Us: A Climate Scientist's Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World (Atria/One Signal Publishers, 2021), talks about how to avoid letting political polarization derail actions, big and small, to address climate change. As families gather to celebrate the holidays, many singles and unmarried couples might face questions from family members about their relationship status. Katherine Hertlein, relationship therapist and professor in the couple and family therapy program at Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at University of Nevada Las Vegas, offers advice for responding to their intrusive questions. Before we gather with folks with different media diets, WNYC's The United States of Anxiety host Kai Wright and senior digital producer Kousha Navidar offer an experiment to get past the filter bubbles that define what information gets to us. Anna Sale, host of the WNYC Studios podcast Death, Sex & Money and author of the book Let's Talk About Hard Things (Simon & Schuster, 2021), shares her tips for how to have conversations about tough subjects, and why she thinks it's beneficial to talk it out. Many of us need fortitude to get through. Reverend Dr. Jacqui Lewis would add that we need Fierce Love too. Reverend Jacqui is senior minister of Middle Collegiate Church in Manhattan's East Village. A year ago, the building burnt to the ground, but the story didn't stop there. In this far-ranging conversation, Laura and Rev. Jacqui talk about mutual aid, colonial baggage, and the Reverend's new book, Fierce Love: A Bold Path to Ferocious Courage and Rule-Breaking Kindness that Can Heal the World. Rev. Jacqui also shares what it took for her to emerge from a “bad touch” experience -- and how truth helps us move from fear to power in our relationship with ourselves, one another, and to making justice in the world. The Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis is an author, Activist, and Public Theologian, the first woman and first Black Senior Minister at Middle Collegiate Church, which is a multiracial, incredibly welcoming, and inclusive congregation in the Lower East Side of New York City, which dates to 1628. Growing up in church in the South Side of Chicago, the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., when she was nine incited what would become a lifelong devotion to activism and social justice. Graduating school, then spending a decade working in the corporate world, she felt called to redefine how she would step into her own exploration of faith, attending Princeton Theological Seminary, then devoting herself to urban ministry, with the intention of reimagining what faith, church, and community could be. Eventually becoming a leader in Middle Church, Rev. Lewis has been instrumental in bringing together what she calls a “multiethnic rainbow coalition of love, justice, and worship that rocks her soul,” and has remained a leading voice in activism, with her work have featured by the TODAY Show, MSNBC, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post, among many others. She is the creator of the MSNBC online show, Just Faith and the PBS show, Faith and Justice, in which she led important conversations about culture and current events. Her podcast, Love.Period., is produced by the Center for Action and Contemplation. And her new book, Fierce Love: A Bold Path to Ferocious Courage and Rule-Breaking Kindness That Can Heal the World, is a deep exploration of faith, race, justice and transformation, bundled with exercises that invite you in a path of personal growth, activism and collective elevation. You can find Rev. "Maundy Thursday is about the food, the ritual, the sharing, but it's also about the love. It's the mandate, the mandāta, to love. To love each other the way that we are loved by God who came all the way down to be with us, to wash our feet, to cry out tears, to weep at the things that cause us pain, to love us on our worst days and our best."//John 13:34I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. After the reading of the names of those lost to COVID-19 in New York City last year, Jacqueline Lewis, senior minister at Middle Collegiate Church in the East Village, reflects on grief, ritual and mourning as a community.
"This gospel is willing to look at pain but not romanticize it, and push towards incremental and partial healing. Just like the pockets of joy we find in the midst of our own pain and suffering, our own loss and trauma, even when we are down and out, may we take a cue from our Christian ancestors and, if only during this Lenten season, try not to romanticize or fix it, but just sit in the complexity of this moment in time, that it may usher in its own incremental or partial healing. May it be so."In the midst of being "down and out," how have you experienced incremental or partial healing during the past year?//This episode was written and recorded by Rev. Natalie Renee Perkins, the Digital Minister at Middle Collegiate Church. It was produced by Rev. Jim Keat. What does it mean to reclaim Christianity, committing to the daily work of anti-racism, and revolutionary love of Jesus? We sat down with Rev. Jacqueline J. Lewis, Ph.D., Senior Minister at Middle Collegiate Church, a 1,300-member multi-ethnic, welcoming, and inclusive congregation in New York City (and full disclosure, my home church, loves!) for a conversation which delved into: - The need for each of us to make anti-racism a daily practice - Rooting our minds and spirits in revolutionary love - The challenging joy of leading a diverse church that is radically inclusive and leaves no one out regardless of race, sexuality / gender identity or ability. - The essential duty of church membership to push leaders towards anti-racist practices which goes beyond the pew and into our daily lives - the way we love, work, shop and come in community. She is a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary and earned her Ph.D. in Religion and Society/Psychology and Religion at Drew University. Ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Dr. Lewis hosted “Just Faith,” an on-demand television program on MSNBC.com and is a frequent media commentator.
