Four friends in North County (San Diego, California) indiscriminately watch every god damned movie that hits the local theater. Inspired by years of regularly breaking down countless movies in the same theater's parking lot solely to entertain one another, each episode documents this spirit of immediacy via a lively roundtable discussion featuring spoilers, movie news, swearing, and movie games. Hijinks ensue. "Like a depressed adult's Letterboxd screaming at you." Your Movie Masters are: Colin Tappe, Jestine Seabrooks, Brent Eyestone, and Dylen Zepeda. In a jam-packed penultimate episode, the gang grades all films from the fourth quarter of 2023 and reviews three brand new ones: • THE BOYS IN THE BOAT [00:10:51] - George Clooney strikes again with a rather detail-oriented period piece that somehow makes one nostalgic for a time they (nor the director) ever lived. Hear why it worked. • THE COLOR PURPLE [00:22:03] - okay, so to try to get it straight, it's a reboot (kinda) based on the Broadway musical that was based on the book that the original movie based itself on. Maybe. Either way, it's a wieldy task for a multitude of reasons. Find out if it was successful in its attempt. • FERRARI [00:40:05] - Kylo Ren put on a fake neck and a fake accent to try to tell the story of... well, the gang tries to parse that out while discussing the latest offering from Michael Mann. • 2023 Q4 FILMS TIER LIST [01:05:22] - for the fourth time this year, the gang sits down with all theatrical releases from the previous three months and assigns individual grades. Hear why the gang loved this one so much. • AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM [00:34:13] - Jason Mamoa and Amber Heard return. Surely the parking lots of movie theaters were packed for this one over the holidays, right? Right? • ANYONE BUT YOU [01:02:43] - ...wherein some exec really thought it was a smart idea to try to have Sydney Sweeney lead a feature film. Was this the worst movie of the entire year or simply remarkably awful? • IRON CLAW [01:20:01] - A24 tries to put their touch on territory wrestling lore and the "curse" of the von Erichs. Hear why many non-wrestling fans love it so much and why many wrestling fans maybe aren't as warm to it. • MIGRATION [01:39:03] - an animation solo mission for one Movie Master! Well... • THE BOY AND THE HERON [00:21:35] - Hayao Miyazaki has clearly been busy slaving away on this latest offering from Studio Gibli. Obviously, this one's a visual feat. But how does it work as a movie? • THE DISAPPEARANCE OF SHERE HITE [00:41:21] - An excellent documentary surrounding the phenomenon of how someone can be a major part of a cultural moment (one could argue several cultural moments) only to disappear from the collective memory and narrative within a generation. This is one of the better docs on the year and the gang has plenty to say about it. • THE OATH [00:59:45] - This is another faith-based theatrical offering and you get two guesses on which two Movie Masters gleefully flocked to a screening this week. First up: "Jules" [00:02:48], a small film about an alien crashing a spaceship into the yard of a senior citizen and one of the most pleasant surprises of the year. Second on the docket: "The Last Voyage Of The Demeter" [00:31:59], a maritime telling of the Dracula legend. Next up: "Shortcomings" [01:02:24], an absurdly unrealistic tale of relationships in Berkeley that, in spite of how out of touch it is with reality, is delivered with unaware seriousness. And finally: "Dreamin' Wild" [01:18:03] is the pseudo-biopic of Donnie and Joe Emerson. Never heard of them? It's fine. They were obscure musicians who got a reissue on Light in the Attic 30 years later. Yes, there was a movie made about it (no shade). In sharp contrast, and after being a legitimate (if not irrational) fan of "The Meg," one of your Movie Masters is prepared to call "The Meg 2: The Trench [00:41:12] the biggest disappointment of 2023. With spirits down after another bad shark movie, "Theater Camp" [01:04:54] swoops in and offers one of the year's biggest delightful surprises. Once touted as the next "GUY" in horror following 2020's "Host," director Rob Savage followed it up with the ponderous far-right hot mess "Dashcam," a classic don't-put-your-partner-in-your-art moment that should serve as a cautionary tale for future filmmakers. But a five picture is a five picture deal... and Savage gets another crack at it with "The Boogeyman" [00:33:33], a rough adaptation of a Stephen King short story. Was this a redeeming effort or does the creative spiral continue in a downward trajectory? Hey kids, do you like CRAZY sex? Wasn't "50 Shades of Gray" just INSANE? Half of the gang watched the first nine movies for the first time in the days before the screening, one member was current and had seen most in the theater, and the other decided to simply walk into "Fast X" without having seen a single frame from any of the previous movies. With the ladies of Book Club taking their squad over to Rome immediately after a couple years of enduring the blues of the pandemic, could they find joie de vivre once again? Up next: Charlie Day's "Fool's Paradise" [00:23:20]. While critics and audiences seem to have clearly expected something in particular (based on abysmal online ratings), the beauty of constantly needing to watch 5+ new theatrical releases every week is that the gang often "goes in blind" and doesn't have the time or mental surplus to formulate a set of expectations for any given movie. Thus, "only" three movies are discussed. First up, a listener asks what films each Movie Master has seen multiple times at the theater and all have multiple answers. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" [00:10:43] kicks off the discussion of current films. Putting a rather somber cap on the trilogy, how did this installment stack up against the rest? IT'S ME MARGARET [36:15] could only draw in two adult male Movie Masters, who had to watch the entire film in an auditorium with the intended Judy Bloom audience: children. It's psychotic to have almost typed "there's only four movies to cover this week," but that's an unfortunate side effect of being in the heart of multiple weeks where five to seven theatrical releases has become the norm. Now eleven months into "the experiment," the gang has long forgotten that the average human statistically reports only "rarely" walking into a movie theater, let alone more than once a week. For those curious: 18% reported "never," 41% "rarely," 33% "sometimes," and 8% "often in the most current Statista survey. ANYWAY, "Beau is Afraid" [00:01:18] is the most expensive movie A24 ever produced while also touting its most bloated in run time, clocking in at around three hours. This is cut down from a reported original run time of four hours. Was all the expense and considerable length worth the inherent gamble? Well, while the film is tanking mercilessly at the box office, at least one Movie Master was profoundly moved by the film, declaring it their film of the year so far, and yet another feels that, much like "Everything Everywhere All At Once," the laurels and true hype will be on about an 8-month delay... after it hits streaming and makes the casual rounds. "Evil Dead Rise" [00:42:00] is up next. You'd think the gang would be hyped, right? Find out if that was the case and, if so, if the results lived up to or perhaps surpassed expectations. Much like "Beau is Afraid," "Chevalier" [01:02:31] is absolute box office poison, coming in at eleventh its opening weekend and sinking like a rock (or even... The Rock at this point) to the very bottom at sixteenth the following week. In spite of strong "we don't want this at all" message being sent by the public, at least two Movie Masters are prepared to champion its merits while another firmly puts it in F-tier/kill-it-with-fire territory. "Enys Men" [01:21:33] was a solo mission one Movie Masters drive a little farther to take in. A very small, very niché film, it's yet another hard-to-categorize offering that almost lazily gets marketed as "horror," which is sure to deeply upset traditional fans of the genre. In the news [1:05:50], Dana Carvey (not to be confused with Martin Short, COLIN), recently revealed how difficult it was to pray for the victims of 9/11 while clad in the heavy prosthetics of "turtle man" during principle photography of the 2001 film "Master of Disguise." Finally, the premiere edition of a new game called A.I.MBD is hatched into the world [1:08:30]. Four movie plots are read. Three are real. One is written by ChatGPT. Can you guess which is which? Episode 28: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves x Spinning Gold x His Only Son + Q1 2023 Release Tier List

Was it bold or just utterly ill-advised to open "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" less than one week before "The Super Mario Bros. Movie?" D&D cost over $150,000,000 to make and still hasn't recouped its production costs. Released just five days later, TSMBM cost around $100,000,000 and grossed over $374,000,000 its opening week while dropping D&D to a distant #4 and a precipitous financial free-fall from its opening level. Yet while EOne and Paramount may not have made wise choices in scheduling, they certainly made fantastic choices in writer/directors, cast, and the ultimate execution of the narrative. D&D is very fun movie and the gang has no shortage of great things to say about it. "Spinning Gold" is another story on every level in that, out of almost 50 theatrical releases screened in 2023, it's the front-runner in the gang's consensus worst film by far. Was this a money-laundering thing? Was the film made by an entire family of Tommy Wiseaus? Either way, this thing made Neil Breen look like Wes Anderson. Tune in for the ensuing burial. The gang's resident Faith-Based Cinema enthusiast duo try on "His Only Son," which is a change of pace in the sense that the screenplay is based on actual Bible narratives than the regular stream of modern victim, ridiculous persecution complex fare. Did it work for them? And finally, the gang rips through the 40 theatrical releases that comprised quarter 1 of the 2023 Regal Movie Masters Unlimited schedule and tier-rates everything seen in order to determine the best so far. Two films pass through to the highest level possible - find out what they are in this episode. Well, two outta three ain't bad... This week: "John Wick: Chapter 4" [00:01:42] hit theaters and the gang was there on opening night. You know this franchise, it's very likely that you love it. Hear everyone's favorite parts , performances, and larger questions for the Wick Universe. "The Lost King" [00:35:40] is up next and, if it's under your radar, the gang highly recommends that you put it on. Frears! Hawkins! Coogan! Richard III! It's either a very loose or very accurate (depending on who you believe) biopic of Philippa Langley's real-life quest to find the buried remains of King Richard III under a parking lot in the UK. Probably the only film in history where the villain is the University of Leicester. "A Good Person" [01:02:12] is not a good movie. Tune in to hear why. The episode concludes with a look back on all of the ~40 films that comprised the first quarter of 2023 through the lens of last year's awards show. Hear some of the early contenders for favorite film, director, actor and actress, supporting cast, script, girl boss, sigma male, chillest vibe, theater experience, and of course the Hater's Ball worst film so far. Overtime was definitely logged for this episode, as some of the gang journeyed out to the decommissioned Escondido Regal to catch some niché flicks on top of the regular agenda. But first, your emails! Topics include: the recent Regal Movie Masters Unlimited Oscars Special, what everyone does for a living, and how the podcast came to be. To probe further on future episodes, send your comments, suggestions, questions, movie recommendations, and more to moviemasters760@gmail.com. Coverage of current theater fare kicks off with "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," the second installment in a series with an unknown future once Flashpoint hits this year and the entire DCU reboots. Did this cast and this sequel make a good enough case to factor into a future phase? "Moving On" is up next and you know the gang rides hard for Senior Cinema. This one features a couple of favorites in Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, but also works in Malcolm McDowell and the legend Richard Roundtree. How did it stack up against other recent SCU hits like "80 For Brady" and "Maybe I Do?" The madness of Willem Dafoe is up next via "Inside," easily the favorite movie of the year so far for at least a couple of your Movie Masters. Hear why. To close out this episode, two Movie Masters went above and beyond to take in another dose of Faith-Based Cinema in the form of "Southern Gospel" and one of the strangest Regal offerings imaginable via "The Magic Flute." Hear how these movies are explained to the RMMU contingent that opted out of both. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rmmu/support

Let's not bury the lead: the most impressive Maltin Movie Masters performance of all time happens at the end of this episode (01:05:49). If you think you've got what it takes, challengers to the undisputed Maltin Movie Masters Sci-Fi championship throne can email moviemasters760@gmail.com and make their presence known. This week in movies: the gang covers Guy Ritchie's "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre" (00:01:39) and learn that one Movie Master has never seen even a single frame of any Guy Ritchie movie. Another Movie Master couldn't tell if Hugh Grant was in "heavy makeup" or just got older. Does the ensemble of Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, and more make it work? "Scream VI" is second on the docket (00:16:14) and it marks the first time that one Movie Master has seen any installment from the franchise. Hear what it's like to dive in blind after five previous installments before a larger discussion opens up on why this franchise largely doesn't work beyond the first installment. Adam Driver's "65" is up next (00:39:24). Theories (facts?) about Mr. Kylo Ren's ears are discussed and the "Notes" segment returns after a brief hiatus. "Champions" wraps up the new movie coverage for the week (00:59:19). You're in the standalone-Farrelly era, like it or not. Does this film (by Bobby Farrelly) deliver what "The Greatest Beer Run Ever" (the last from his brother Peter) didn't? The gang is somewhat split on if modern Creed/Rocky-affiliated movies should be held to the "good movie" standards of the inceptive 1976 work or if they should simply be regarded and celebrated as cash-grab punch-hit spectacles. A friendly debate ensues. One Movie Master got duped into thinking that "Jesus Revolution" was going to be a secular telling of the Southern California hippie/Jesus Freak movement of the 1970's. Hear all about the moment where it became painfully obvious to the boys (RMMU's resident female wisely sat this screening out) that this film is anything but secular or impartial. In the news: David Cronenberg continues his tour through high fashion and the gang examines various viral marketing tactics surrounding "Scream VI" and other horror properties. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rmmu/support

It's SPEEDBALL CINEMA™, as the gang unintentionally watched three period pieces involving drugs that go in completely different directions. But first: a rather stern email from a listener finds its way to the moviemasters760@gmail.com inbox and it's directed at one Movie Master in particular. How does the target of such sharp critique respond? On to the movies: "Of An Age" (00:09:04) is a small production set in 1999 about a teenage Serbian-born Australian amateur ballroom dancer who experiences an intense, unexpected overnight romance with his dance partner's older brother. One Movie Master describes it as "if Harmony Korine were to make a normal movie." Hear the gang break down what made this one work. Based (extremely loosely) on a true story of Pablo Eskobear, "Cocaine Bear" (00:38:54) is a comedy thriller set in 1985 rural Georgia. Cops, hooligans, criminals, tourists, teenagers, and anyone in the path of this drug-fueled behemoth could all get got in this one. While many were eviscerated, how did Elizabeth Banks fare in directing one of the season's most heavily-marketed films? Was the CG an issue? What does the film share in common with DEVO? Hear all about the film that also happened to mark the final on-screen performance of Ray Liotta. "Emily" (01:00:40) is a biopic set mostly in the mid-1800's detailing much of the life of author and alleged opium-enthusiast Emily Brontë. With a rather corporeally-generous casting of Emma Mackey (whose next film is "Barbie," for reference) in the titular role, did the other countless liberties taken in the telling of the story of this brief life detract from making an enjoyable film? This episode closes out with an animal-themed edition of Maltin Movie Masters (01:22:38). --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rmmu/support

It's at least a four-fer, as the gang had a bevy of new releases to cover, plus extra credit in the form of two Movie Masters' morbid curiosity toward what previous installments of the Magic Mike franchise could possibly be like. First up this week (00:01:20): "She Came From The Woods," another retro-slasher (this one taking place in 1987). Unlike a lot of contemporary retro slasher fare, there is actually innovation and other aspects worth noting on top of the handful of things that could have been executed better. "Consecration" is up next (00:20:52), another journey down the well-worn, often-trod path of nun/convent-oriented horror. One Movie Master assigned it an 80/20 ratio wherein the film starts and stays on rails for the majority of the film, only to unspool into an incoherent mess on the final lap. Another Movie Master rates the film without having even seen it. "Magic Mike's Last Dance" is your main event of the evening (00:35:31). With the female contingent of the gang wisely opting out, your other three Movie Masters had a full-blown boys night out to take in this absolutely bizarre offering. Whistles fully whet, two of the three immediately went home to watch and figure out if the first two installments were just as... strange. Hear the entire wrap-up of the franchise to date. A solo mission went down this week and you can find out which Movie Master took in "The Amazing Maurice," an animated feature about a cat (01:15:48). This week in the news (01:24:13), the gang looks at the emerging impact and fears of A.I. clauses being written into voice acting contracts and the convoluted and ill-advised "Sightline" program recently adopted by the AMC theater chain. Expedited for your listening pleasure, the gang caught "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" on previews night last week and immediately recorded reactions and analysis. Opinions seem to be divided, as your Movie Masters saw several aspects differently, yet respectfully disagree on the film's merits. As Marvel heads into yet another "phase," are they off on the right foot or stumbling out of the blocks? The objectively bad "Marlowe" (see all aggregate critic and audience scores) is up next, which catches the gang wondering such things as "who is this movie for," "why was this movie made," and "is it smart to appear in a movie featuring casually racist dialogue after having been involved in recent controversy surrounding race?" One of the screenings the Movie Masters attended saw every other human in the auditorium walk out early: find out why. And finally, three members attended the one-night only, limited reissue of 1981's classic slasher "My Bloody Valentine."
